I interviewed Dio when he went back to Sabbath. He was at his house in southern California and this guy took the time to talk to little ol' me...some metal DJ at a college radio station with people doing repairs from a recent earthquake. I asked him "are you sure?" He was totally gracious and talked to me for 45 minutes. Great guy. Rest easy, Ronnie!!
I've never been as interested in interviews as I am now after hearing Ronnie. After having seen a few now, his already high stock has gone up considerably. What a class act. An intelligent and candid man who never strays far from the core human value of grace....all of which is every bit as impressive as that captivating and distinctive voice.
I remember whenever I had an idea for a song/riff and melody I would ring him and he would tell me if it was good or bad. Sense I was really into lyrics and was constantly trying to come up with the best way to phrase things he would just complete my sentence and make it great.

Lol! It was a great insult. But In some ways (and I really hate saying this) Ronnie wasn't being very fair. Sure he's a better vocalist than Ozzy...He's the greatest vocalist in metal history! But Ozzy came up really, really hard & poor as fuck & as a vocalist he does emote among the best. Now I'm not saying that RJD lead a perfectly charmed life, but what chance did a guy that grew up in one of the poorest places in the U.K. have of learning breath control so well from playing trumpet that he gets offered a scholarship to fucking Juliard? What's the likelihood that he's gonna know anyone that can teach him the appogio technique (Something that usually only classical vocalists use) in a neighborhood where you barely had to time to learn anything because you're working your extremely blue collar ass raw? No, this rant would never have happened had Ozzy not taken what he did to his own life out on RJD. Had he been a grown up about it & blamed his being fired from Sab on his dumb addictions instead of making sport of Dio's diminutive height & Italian heritage, Dio probably wouldn't have said a single nasty thing about Ozzy or his singing ability.

(Dave Walker of Savoy Brown) Ozzy hated the technologically dependent studio focus Sab was going in, to the point of even saying that by the time S.B.S. was done he knew it was over and actually wanted to pursue a solo career back then. So I doubt it was as much of a shock as rock history often makes it out to be. Regarding Ronnie, he is undeniably metal's greatest, most technically gifted vocalist & Sabbath would've fucking died without him! He brought the darkness back to a band that was starting to sound more like top 40 prog right before he joined. All I'm saying is that they were both pretty brutal with each other and it was a good thing that they mellowed on each other as time went on. \m/
What i found so cool about that is when Dio would sing Ozzy Sabbath songs. He didnt like singing Ozzy Sabbath songs at all but when he did for their tours you could hear the effort he would put into the songs. Its like he gave a big F-U to Ozzy by singing his songs better than him
@Thora Friganza Ozzy is more intuitively intelligent than book smart. His brain and speech have just been affected from decades of heavy drug use. But if you can understand what he's trying to get across, he's usually pretty wise and perceptive.
Comparing Dio & Ozzy is like comparing apples & oranges. The early Sabbath with Ozzy defined the Sabbath sound and it was amazing heavy metal. But the first two Black Sabbath albums with Ronnie Dio are pure class.

Blackmore, Iommi, Campbell, they all did their best work when they were with RJD! Between his unbelievable song writing & his unparalleled vocals, he just brought out the best in everyone he played with.
I would'nt go that far! To be precise, it was Blackmore who pulled the best of of every singer he has ever worked with. When Dio got solo career... despite working with some of the very best musicians... he couldnt write a song for the life of him! And this comes from a very big fan of Dio... just being real...

Basically we agree… I am also not very keen on stuff after Holy Diver, with only rare gems here and there! But man, Blackmore was/is God! And not to be forgotten, Heavy metal(or nowadays called Classic as a genre) was rapidly loosing popularity trough the 80’s and was all but dead in the 90’s! Exactly the years of RJD solo career. So am taking it easy on him when judging his songs from that period.
Dio was a gentleman, the Sinatra of metal, a true legend! My favorite singers are Dio and Freddie Mercury , each one on his square, love both of them, both great. RIP, legends.
One thing you can say about Ronnie is that he took a great deal of pride in his work and wasn't about to have him or his bandmates put down publicly. In later years, while they were never friends, I think most of the bad blood was put to rest. But the response he gave here was absolutely appropriate given everything Ozzy was saying in the press at that point in time.
I had never heard this interview before but based on other interviews that he gave, I would expect no less than what we heard. DIO was a class act who told it like it was. Only a man like DIO can rip a guy like Ozzy apart while giving total respect at the same time. That's a true intellectual at work!
Ronnie's responding to Ozzy saying (when asked what he thought of Black Sabbath mk 2) "who Geezer and the three Wop's?" Ronnie was a legend, and had every right to unload on Ozzy.
I think it was a very creative and funny joke with no offence. Ozzy knows how to do this as a master. Even though I love and admire Dio as hell, I think he overreacted and was rude saying what he says here. Plus, Ozzy has always been also a great legend. I agree with Ronnie he was jellous, and I think he should have stopped there.

They were not both fantastic. Ozzy as musician was total zero. He never writes music. Butler wrote lyrics. Even in his own band he didnt write music. He even lied bout writing music when he didnt. As musician he was nothing. He was lucky to be carried by great musicians all over jis carrer. DIO on other hand wrote awesome lyrics and he wrote a lot music. Plus he was stabel as singer till the very end and sounded mroe powerful, when Ozzy couldnt even sing in tune
DIO's fantastic voice had its origins in his father's attempts to make a musician out of his son. RJD should have played trumpet if it was after his fathers' will. That's how he learned how to breathe to develop such a powerful voice. Ozzy on the other hand was only a shouter with a huge talent for show. He was one of the biggest frontmen in the history of Metal (along with Lemmy, Rob and Biff). His ability to sing proper tunes may have been mediocre compared to RJD. But you should not compare them. That would be like comparing Doro with Tarja. That too would make no sense at all. Ozzy had a huge career and he was a mentor for many now legendary musicians (Randy Rhoads, Zakk Wylde and others).

Ronnie was one of the greatest gifts to the world of Metal and every other band he played with outside his solo work. I was able to attend two of his concerts in the 80's and I wish I would have seen him more. A great man, a great mind and a great artist.
During the pandemic I've been listening to all his music from DIO AND THE PROPHETS to ELF stuff I couldn't hear back then. Yep, his voice is metal without a doubt but that smooth 60s stuff amazing
Dio was exactly correct in his comments about Ozzy. Ozzy also said that Sabbath's songs were not his, and he was just singing other people's songs. Every time I saw him with Sabbath this was the impression they gave. Dio, on the other hand, sang from his soul.

Ozzy leaving & Dio coming in was the Best thing that couldve happened imo. It gave us 6 killer albums. Heaven & Hell, Mob Rules & Live Evil , Blizzard of Oz , Diary of a Madman & Speak of the Devil. ....ALL awesome albums.
Both Dio and Ozzy had their egos, but it's surely all water under the bridge by now. I'm a fan of both. Dio had INCREDIBLE power and conviction in his voice, and could sell even the most mediocre song. Ozzy, meanwhile, while being not technically gifted, had an emotionally resonant tone to his voice that spoke to an entire generation. Ozzy's voice was plaintiff and relateable whereas Dio's voice was commanding and awe inspiring. But I wouldn't give up either. I love both with all my heart .
Merle Langlois Ozzy* I've seen Sabbath with Dio multiple times and that never happened. I've seen Sabbath with Ozzy and he had forgotten words, sung out of tune etc.
I saw Dio in 2003, and it wasn't like he lacked the ability to sing properly, he just felt like playing fast and lose with the melodies and vocal lines, maybe to assuage his own boredom.
They both were good when they were with Sabbath. Very different vocalists. Ozzy followed the riff, Dio sang across the riff. That was the biggest difference. Sabbath went downhill after Dio.
Honestly, RJD always comes off as a bit of a prick with a chip on his shoulder. He was good to the fans but not really good to fellow musicians including to a lot of people in his own band.

Musicians pay tribute Dio because they themselves loved and cared for Dio as a musician, and a genuine person. Musicians pay tribute to Ozzy because the fans(who don’t know him personally)love him. Think about that! I still listen to them both, but I have no delusions about how much of a knucklehead one is compared to the other.
Early sabbath with Ozzy played a HUGE part of my early life growing up, there was nothing like them and they as with Zeppelin were almost like a religion/ spiritual thing for me, I loved Ozzy's voice and had never heard anything like it, but Geezer wrote %99 of all there lyrics and sadly the sound of his voice was his only real contribution to the band, he and Ronnie could not be / should not be compared in any way, Ronnie was a different entity all together who he was as a person and a writer/ artist was quite a few rungs on the ladder higher than Ozzy but they were both important, there would be "No Black Sabbath" without. Ozzy, but there'd be no Ozzy without Tony, Geezer and Bill, and the second incarnation of Sabbath was something altogether different, Ronnie was a wonderfully talented intellectual straight up kind of kind of guy who'll not be forgotten for his contribution to heavy music, Elf, Rainbow, Dio, Sabbath, Heaven & Hell (Sabbath) RIP🤘🏻✌🏼️

The truth is that Ozzy is a legend because he is the luckiest rock singer who ever lived. He sang in bands that had riffs from Tony Iommi and Randy Rhoads. How can someone not become an icon with those guitars behind his voice? What he lacks in natural skill he makes up for being in the right place at the right time.
You said it, he is lucky that he had muscians that played their instrument great and that wrote songs and lyrics for him to sing. Other than that he would have never been anyone. He is definitely not a Muscian!
That 1st comment is 100 percent true. Ozzy has had the best players that he could get. Randy of course, is my favorite. Tony is a monster riff God. One of my favorite players. Jake is also a monster, with Ozzy. another of my favorites. Ozzy has always had killer players, to cover his ass. I am a huge fan, but it's true.
That's about the most blunt and uncompromising I've ever heard Dio get in an interview. He must have been fed up with the comparisons by then -- and rightly so.
Excellent interview with a real musician and gentleman. I've just finished reading his biography "Rainbow in the Dark: The Autobiography" and he writes about the rough treatment he received from other musicians (e.g. Blackmore, Iommi). By contrast, in Dio, he bent over backwards to treat and pay his bandmates really well giving them several chances to redeem themselves (Vivian Campbell).
Wow I forgot how intelligent, humble and deadly Ronnie really is ..deadly as in he is able to spit venom and strikes back with words effectively when people tell lies and he needs to set the story straight ....proud ,brave,honest and a gentleman..
@@AH-nu2py I was at one of the Blizzard of Oz shows where he did that (Minneapolis, winter 1981-82). I did not make the connection at the time. Now it makes some sense, in an incredibly crass way. (That said, Ozzy with Randy Rhodes was a good show.)
I remember watching a brief interview with Dio on MTV, almost years ago. I was immediately impressed with how intelligent he was. There was nobody else like that in hard rock like that.
It was a long time ago. Before he died, I'm sure he looked at it all differently. I saw him in concert about 10/12 years ago (could be longer) and he was incredible. I heard that he stayed to talk to the audience after the gig. Nice guy, who was a great singer. RIP
@@timlobato7848 actually that is a close call…if you look at Dio’s work across Black Sabbath, Rainbow and his solo act, Ozzy probably comes out on top, but barely…and when you consider that Dio was able to collaborate with some of the most difficult musicians in terms of temperament.,.Blackmore, Iommi, Cozy Powell, Vivian Campbell, etc…and that Dio is usually ranked HIGHER than Ozzy on “Best Frontman” lists, and that his vocal abilities are far superior, then I’d say it’s a draw….I’d take Dio’s worst music over Ozzy’s worst music anytime..not even close…and once Randy and Jake E Lee were gone, Ozzy’s vocals and songwriting really took a dive, as did his live performances
You have to be from Birmingham to understand Ozzy. Not saying its good or bad, he just has a real accent thats tough to make out. Ozzy needs subtitles outside of the UK.
@@dieselfueler While it 'may' help a little to be from Birmingham to understand what Ozzy says, due to the local dialect or whatever, what would be of MUCH more help, is for the listener to have recently swallowed a bunch of quaaludes or valiums, chased by at least 1/2 to 1 pint of single malt Scotch(or Wild Turkey). Then, you'd be on Ozzy's level, which would be of immense value in interpreting his slurred speech. But even doing that would likely be futile, because although you may finally be able to grasp the individual words, theres still a good chance that you would remain just as confused as before. The substance of what he was saying would probably be just as convoluted and unclear as his slurred dialect! There were many occasions in the 80s where you couldn't make heads or tails of what Ozzy was saying at any given moment. Why do you think he was such a popular guest speaker on Howard Stern's show? He wouldn't have Ozzy talk for more than a minute or so, because although his drunk-speak was funny for a little while, it became tedious after that. What's the point of spending 30 mins not being able to figure out what the hell your talk show guest is saying?

Why back then, I didn't know that Ronnie was in Elf ,or that Elf was an actual Central New York band. What I did know is that when Hoochie Koochie Lady was played on the radio , I got all crazy and started singing/screaming to it. It had what the radio was missing , *Rock & Roll Fire* . I did get to see Ronnie at the Syracuse War Memorial with Black Sabbath on their Mob Rules tour. Ronnie loved us, his fans. We meant something to him . I was at that show too. Howie Castle from WSYR 94.3 Rock presented Dio with some award that night. It was a rescheduled show from February of that same year due to the death of Tony Iommi's father. I think Doc Holiday opened up. Great show!

Metallica opened up on their Damaged, supporting their Master of Puppets album, tour for that show. I never heard of Mettilica before the show, and I certainly never forgot them either. Amazing perfoamce by them. I didn't know Jake E Lee wrote most of Bark At The Moon, and a good amount of The Ultimate Sin. Kinda goes with what Ronnie was saying here.
The RJD/Sabbath union had a chemistry that was incredible and cannot be denied. EVERYTHING recorded by these guys together was glorious: H&H, Mob Rules, Dehumanizer, the 3 studio tracks on the Dio years compilation, Heaven & Hell (TDYK). They truly had something very special.
My brother went to Techincal Exctasy and Never Say Die tours and said they were disappointing tours. But it was the last couple of tours we both went to, hearing Follow The Tears, Bible Black, The Devil Cries, I, the Mob Rules. OMG!! Those shows were magick. Even my wife loved it.
I always liked Dio. the sabbath and rainbow stuff was epic and I liked some of his solo stuff too. But Ozzy is great too. I loved all the sabbath stuff and alot of his solo stuff
Every band Dio was in he made absolute magic. Dio era Rainbow is pure gold and Dio era Sabbath...Heaven and Hell is great. Mob Rules is a fucking masterpiece. Dio was the lightening that recharged Iommi. Tony Iommi was riffing obviously before hand but UNTIL RJD got there he wasn't the shredder he was. I'm not taking away anything from Ozzy or his time with Sabbath but the fact is he was not the driving force in the studio that pushed them beyond their limits that Dio was. And as far as Rainbow goes, if you want to see what happens when Dio leaves a band, listen to post Dio Rainbow. It's watered down radio friendly garbage. Dio was an articulate speaker, songwriter, DYNAMIC performer and every inspiration a kid needed to not do drugs and still be fucking awesome....Dio is a metal angel.
Zak Johnson It felt like the band was getting tired already. I gotta say, Ozzy did that too, and for more than one album, but ultimately, it's about what's good, and you can't convince me that Black Sabbath, Paranoid, Master Of Reality, Vol. 4, and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath aren't absolute masterpieces. Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules are masterpieces as well, but that's two albums, compared to Ozzy's five. I'm not even gonna get started on their solo work.
I have so much respect for Ronnie, and even more after hearing this interview. what an authentic person, I love that! Hearing him sing is a gift and blessing to the ears and soul!! ..and his stage presence is unbelievable! I'm mesmerized completely. What a class act!! 🔥🤘🏻♥️
This just goes to show how much Ronnie grew as a human during his life.In his latter years we knew him as a much different person than he was back then.May we all follow in his foot steps and grow to be respectful and kind to others also.We know in the end,that Dio became a very good man who we all grew to admire.This is what counts.We all live,learn and grow wiser.I'm sure most,if not all of us hope not to be judged and remembered just for some of the things we said or did when we were younger either. Dio is a class act on and off the stage. Ozzy is lucky that he met a man called Tony Iommi. Ozzy is a man who sacked a bassist by headbutting him. Dio can sing like nobody else. No contest.

I remember when Black Sabbath came out with Heaven and Hell , I was floored...To me has to be one of the greatest rock albums ever made..I had high hopes when I heard Dio was with Sabbath but not only was good but to me was on par with Ozzys Blizzard of Ozz .Both of these guys are talented. I think both singers are great, it's interesting to hear this interview though, because I could remember the 80s, and I could remember there being a sense with a lot of these 80's bands that had been around since the seventies that they had progressed now in the 80s, a lot of this had to do with the fact that their songs sounded more polished, and were performed in more of a commercial format. the stuff that tends to be more Timeless is the stuff that really seems to have stood the test of time, tends to be the bands 70s material. although the early 80s dio albums as well as dehumanizer are very overlooked often times because those are great albums and it's a shame that dio had a falling-out with Sabbath in the early 80s during the mixing of Live evil.
Thank you RJD for speaking the truth!! For far too long people have been afraid to speak up concerning Ozzy. The truth is the truth and like it or not Ozzy (and his classless bride), are everything Ronnie says here.
What's hilarious is according George Lynch (who there's no reason to doubt as he had no skin in the game) when he was auditioning for Ozzy and was sure he had gotten the part, Wendy Dio who was managing Rough Cutt and Jake E Lee at the time, kept calling Sharon to try to get Jake the job which he did. So here the two men are at each others' throats, while the two women are merrily doing business with each other behind the scenes.
Well considering Wendy and Sharon were alike... Wendy also leaned on her man to screw over the bandmates from what was rightfully theirs. In fact, Dio proved same kind of flaws in his personality as Ozzy since he also milked his musicians then kicking them to the curb without promised dues.
They truly need to make a movie on this man. They have done a film on Queen, they are going to do one on Ozzy but this man has done a lot in the music industry and has done four great bands.
Comon, Ozzy was not the BETTER singer, its just that his voice is more unique than RJD could ever be. RJD is right, Ozzy couldn't carry a tune if he carried a radio in his pocket, but who gives a f!ck, it sounded great. That's all that matters in the end. Ozzy had a god given talent that was unique. RJD had a good given talent that was great. Once you understand the difference between great and unique, you will be in a much better place.:)
I was raised in a country and western music home,then at a friends house in jr high school his older brother was playing Neon Nights on a 8 trac stereo , I was in a hypnotic trans with the voice of Dio …Then I discovered a band named Rainbow when I heard Temple of the King,now in my 50s my grown kids play hip hop rapp etc.ask me not to play satanic music I say it is NOT band will NEVER stop playing DIO 🤘🏼…RIP R.J.D.

I remember whenever I had an idea for a song/riff and melody I would ring him and he would tell me if it was good or bad. Sense I was really into lyrics and was constantly trying to come up with the best way to phrase things he would just complete my sentence and make it great.

What's the likelihood that he's gonna know anyone that can teach him the appogio technique (Something that usually only classical vocalists use) in a neighborhood where you barely had to time to learn anything because you're working your extremely blue collar ass raw? No, this rant would never have happened had Ozzy not taken what he did to his own life out on RJD. Had he been a grown up about it & blamed his being fired from Sab on his dumb addictions instead of making sport of Dio's diminutive height & Italian heritage, Dio probably wouldn't have said a single nasty thing about Ozzy or his singing ability.

(Dave Walker of Savoy Brown) Ozzy hated the technologically dependent studio focus Sab was going in, to the point of even saying that by the time S.B.S. was done he knew it was over and actually wanted to pursue a solo career back then. So I doubt it was as much of a shock as rock history often makes it out to be. Regarding Ronnie, he is undeniably metal's greatest, most technically gifted vocalist & Sabbath would've fucking died without him! He brought the darkness back to a band that was starting to sound more like top 40 prog right before he joined. Comparing Dio & Ozzy is like comparing apples & oranges. The early Sabbath with Ozzy defined the Sabbath sound and it was amazing heavy metal. But the first two Black Sabbath albums with Ronnie Dio are pure class.

One thing you can say about Ronnie is that he took a great deal of pride in his work and wasn't about to have him or his bandmates put down publicly. In later years, while they were never friends, I think most of the bad blood was put to rest. But the response he gave here was absolutely appropriate given everything Ozzy was saying in the press at that point in time.

I think it was a very creative and funny joke with no offence. Ozzy knows how to do this as a master. Even though I love and admire Dio as hell, I think he overreacted and was rude saying what he says here. Plus, Ozzy has always been also a great legend. They were not both fantastic. Ozzy as musician was total zero. He never writes music. Butler wrote lyrics. Even in his own band he didnt write music. He even lied bout writing music when he didnt. As musician he was nothing. He was lucky to be carried by great musicians all over jis carrer. DIO on other hand wrote awesome lyrics and he wrote a lot music. Plus he was stabel as singer till the very end and sounded mroe powerful, when Ozzy couldnt even sing in tune
DIO's fantastic voice had its origins in his father's attempts to make a musician out of his son. RJD should have played trumpet if it was after his fathers' will. That's how he learned how to breathe to develop such a powerful voice. Ozzy on the other hand was only a shouter with a huge talent for show. He was one of the biggest frontmen in the history of Metal (along with Lemmy, Rob and Biff). His ability to sing proper tunes may have been mediocre compared to RJD. But you should not compare them. That would be like comparing Doro with Tarja. That too would make no sense at all. Ozzy had a huge career and he was a mentor for many now legendary musicians (Randy Rhoads, Zakk Wylde and others).

Ronnie was one of the greatest gifts to the world of Metal and every other band he played with outside his solo work. I was able to attend two of his concerts in the 80's and I wish I would have seen him more. A great man, a great mind and a great artist.

Both Dio and Ozzy had their egos, but it's surely all water under the bridge by now. I'm a fan of both. Dio had INCREDIBLE power and conviction in his voice, and could sell even the most mediocre song. Ozzy, meanwhile, while being not technically gifted, had an emotionally resonant tone to his voice that spoke to an entire generation. Ozzy's voice was plaintiff and relateable whereas Dio's voice was commanding and awe inspiring. But I wouldn't give up either. I love both with all my heart .

I saw Dio in 2003, and it wasn't like he lacked the ability to sing properly, he just felt like playing fast and lose with the melodies and vocal lines, maybe to assuage his own boredom.
They both were good when they were with Sabbath. Very different vocalists. Ozzy followed the riff, Dio sang across the riff. That was the biggest difference. Sabbath went downhill after Dio.

Early sabbath with Ozzy played a HUGE part of my early life growing up, there was nothing like them and they as with Zeppelin were almost like a religion/ spiritual thing for me, I loved Ozzy's voice and had never heard anything like it, but Geezer wrote %99 of all there lyrics and sadly the sound of his voice was his only real contribution to the band, he and Ronnie could not be / should not be compared in any way, Ronnie was a different entity all together who he was as a person and a writer/ artist was quite a few rungs on the ladder higher than Ozzy but they were both important, there would be "No Black Sabbath" without. Ozzy, but there'd be no Ozzy without Tony, Geezer and Bill, and the second incarnation of Sabbath was something altogether different, Ronnie was a wonderfully talented intellectual straight up kind of kind of guy who'll not be forgotten for his contribution to heavy music, Elf, Rainbow, Dio, Sabbath, Heaven & Hell (Sabbath) RIP🤘🏻✌🏼️

The truth is that Ozzy is a legend because he is the luckiest rock singer who ever lived. He sang in bands that had riffs from Tony Iommi and Randy Rhoads. How can someone not become an icon with those guitars behind his voice? What he lacks in natural skill he makes up for being in the right place at the right time.

Excellent interview with a real musician and gentleman. I've just finished reading his biography "Rainbow in the Dark: The Autobiography" and he writes about the rough treatment he received from other musicians (e.g. Blackmore, Iommi).
By contrast, in Dio, he bent over backwards to treat and pay his bandmates really well giving them several chances to redeem themselves (Vivian Campbell).

I remember watching a brief interview with Dio on MTV, almost years ago. I was immediately impressed with how intelligent he was. There was nobody else like that in hard rock like that.

@@timlobato7848 actually that is a close call…if you look at Dio’s work across Black Sabbath, Rainbow and his solo act, Ozzy probably comes out on top, but barely…and when you consider that Dio was able to collaborate with some of the most difficult musicians in terms of temperament.,.Blackmore, Iommi, Cozy Powell, Vivian Campbell, etc…and that Dio is usually ranked HIGHER than Ozzy on “Best Frontman” lists, and that his vocal abilities are far superior, then I’d say it’s a draw….I’d take Dio’s worst music over Ozzy’s worst music anytime..not even close…and once Randy and Jake E Lee were gone, Ozzy’s vocals and songwriting really took a dive, as did his live performances

You have to be from Birmingham to understand Ozzy. Not saying its good or bad, he just has a real accent thats tough to make out. Ozzy needs subtitles outside of the UK.
@@dieselfueler While it 'may' help a little to be from Birmingham to understand what Ozzy says, due to the local dialect or whatever, what would be of MUCH more help, is for the listener to have recently swallowed a bunch of quaaludes or valiums, chased by at least 1/2 to 1 pint of single malt Scotch(or Wild Turkey). Then, you'd be on Ozzy's level, which would be of immense value in interpreting his slurred speech. But even doing that would likely be futile, because although you may finally be able to grasp the individual words, theres still a good chance that you would remain just as confused as before. The substance of what he was saying would probably be just as convoluted and unclear as his slurred dialect!
There were many occasions in the 80s where you couldn't make heads or tails of what Ozzy was saying at any given moment. Why do you think he was such a popular guest speaker on Howard Stern's show? He wouldn't have Ozzy talk for more than a minute or so, because although his drunk-speak was funny for a little while, it became tedious after that. What's the point of spending 30 mins not being able to figure out what the hell your talk show guest is saying?

What I did know is that when Hoochie Koochie Lady was played on the radio , I got all crazy and started singing/screaming to it.

I did get to see Ronnie at the Syracuse War Memorial with Black Sabbath on their Mob Rules tour.

I was at that show too. Howie Castle from WSYR 94.3 Rock presented Dio with some award that night. It was a rescheduled show from February of that same year due to the death of Tony Iommi's father. I think Doc Holiday opened up. Great show!

I absolutely love Ozzy and Dio. I totally respect both of them and their contributions they have brought to Sabbath.
The RJD/Sabbath union had a chemistry that was incredible and cannot be denied. EVERYTHING recorded by these guys together was glorious: H&H, Mob Rules, Dehumanizer, the 3 studio tracks on the Dio years compilation, Heaven & Hell (TDYK). They truly had something very special.
My brother went to Techincal Exctasy and Never Say Die tours and said they were disappointing tours. But it was the last couple of tours we both went to, hearing Follow The Tears, Bible Black, The Devil Cries, I, the Mob Rules. OMG!!
Those shows were magick. Even my wife loved it.

Every band Dio was in he made absolute magic. Dio era Rainbow is pure gold and Dio era Sabbath...Heaven and Hell is great. Mob Rules is a fucking masterpiece. Dio was the lightening that recharged Iommi. Tony Iommi was riffing obviously before hand but UNTIL RJD got there he wasn't the shredder he was. I'm not taking away anything from Ozzy or his time with Sabbath but the fact is he was not the driving force in the studio that pushed them beyond their limits that Dio was. And as far as Rainbow goes, if you want to see what happens when Dio leaves a band, listen to post Dio Rainbow. It's watered down radio friendly garbage. Dio was an articulate speaker, songwriter, DYNAMIC performer and every inspiration a kid needed to not do drugs and still be fucking awesome....Dio is a metal angel.

I gotta say, Ozzy did that too, and for more than one album, but ultimately, it's about what's good, and you can't convince me that Black Sabbath, Paranoid, Master Of Reality, Vol. 4, and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath aren't absolute masterpieces. Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules are masterpieces as well, but that's two albums, compared to Ozzy's five. I'm not even gonna get started on their solo work.

This just goes to show how much Ronnie grew as a human during his life.In his latter years we knew him as a much different person than he was back then.May we all follow in his foot steps and grow to be respectful and kind to others also.We know in the end,that Dio became a very good man who we all grew to admire.This is what counts.We all live,learn and grow wiser.I'm sure most,if not all of us hope not to be judged and remembered just for some of the things we said or did when we were younger either.

Who can deny this? Ozzy wasn't a musician. He knew nothing about music. He was a personality at best. Dio was a trumpet player who mastered breath control, knowing how to sing, not just be a vocalist. Sabbath is Tony. Ozzy was along for the ride.

I remember when Black Sabbath came out with Heaven and Hell , I was floored...To me has to be one of the greatest rock albums ever made..I had high hopes when I heard Dio was with Sabbath but not only was good but to me was on par with Ozzys Blizzard of Ozz .Both of these guys are talented. And maybe Ozzy leaving Sabbath was the best thing for both Ozzy and Sabbath..
Ozzy was kicked out of Sabbath cause he was a mess.And he was pissed off that he was replaced by Dio.He would have been pissed off whoever replaced him.I still know people who won’t listen to any Sabbath without Ozzy even the great Headless Cross with Tony Martin and to me they are just as narrow minded as Ozzy.Dio had every right to fire back at Ozzy and he did it respectfully apart from the brilliant line ‘he couldn’t carry a tune with a radio in a suitcase’which is true.I would fire back to if I was called a Wop Dwarf.

I think both singers are great, it's interesting to hear this interview though, because I could remember the 80s, and I could remember there being a sense with a lot of these 80's bands that had been around since the seventies that they had progressed now in the 80s, a lot of this had to do with the fact that their songs sounded more polished, and were performed in more of a commercial format. the stuff that tends to be more Timeless is the stuff that really seems to have stood the test of time, tends to be the bands 70s material. although the early 80s dio albums as well as dehumanizer are very overlooked often times because those are great albums and it's a shame that dio had a falling-out with Sabbath in the early 80s during the mixing of Live evil.

What's hilarious is according George Lynch (who there's no reason to doubt as he had no skin in the game) when he was auditioning for Ozzy and was sure he had gotten the part, Wendy Dio who was managing Rough Cutt and Jake E Lee at the time, kept calling Sharon to try to get Jake the job which he did. So here the two men are at each others' throats, while the two women are merrily doing business with each other behind the scenes.
Well considering Wendy and Sharon were alike...
Wendy also leaned on her man to screw over the bandmates from what was rightfully theirs.
In fact, Dio proved same kind of flaws in his personality as Ozzy since he also milked his musicians then kicking them to the curb without promised dues.
They truly need to make a movie on this man. They have done a film on Queen, they are going to do one on Ozzy but this man has done a lot in the music industry and has done four great bands.
I love Ozzy but Dio truly is the more talented singer, and without a doubt the more intellectual of two LOL

Comon, Ozzy was not the BETTER singer, its just that his voice is more unique than RJD could ever be. RJD is right, Ozzy couldn't carry a tune if he carried a radio in his pocket, but who gives a f!ck, it sounded great. That's all that matters in the end. Ozzy had a god given talent that was unique. RJD had a good given talent that was great. Once you understand the difference between great and unique, you will be in a much better place.:)

I was raised in a country and western music home,then at a friends house in jr high school his older brother was playing Neon Nights on a 8 trac stereo , I was in a hypnotic trans with the voice of Dio …Then I discovered a band named Rainbow when I heard Temple of the King,now in my 50s my grown kids play hip hop rapp etc.ask me not to play satanic music I say it is NOT band will NEVER stop playing DIO 🤘🏼…RIP R.J.D.
