Now that we are living in Paraguay we have taken time to think about how Paraguay and Nicaragua compare. It's a tough subject for us because we love both countries.
We have come up with 10 things that we believe should be at the top of your list when assessing if a country is a viable destination for you to settle there.
Even though this vid is focused on Paraguay and Nicaragua, it might be helpful for anyone thinking about moving overseas. There's a lot to think about.
We also talk about health care in both countries. Enjoy!

Thanks so much for an incredible array of information. I will be making a reconiscence trip to Paraguay at the end of next year. Yeah, I know it's in the future a bit, but all the same, I'm very excited about it. Im 61 (UK)and considering buying a place maybe in Asuncion. It would be great to meet up with you to get the low down of life out there. The meal would be on me, of course.
@@rocksteadyfreddy1 Hey, it would be great to catch up. And good for you, I'm glad you're excited about your future. In recent years too many people have lost their will to be excited. Life is too short. Let me know if we can help. I know a decent real estate agent in Asuncion (speaks English) so feel free to drop me an email and I can send you his dets. hola@adirtcheaplife.com👍see you when you get here.
Thanks for your intelligent and insightful comments.
I am also a Kiwi who has spent considerable time in both countries, and other latin nations also, indeed my wife is a Paraguaya. Your assessment is spot on, for a variety of reasons I too prefer Paraguay. Might see you there Mate.
Brilliant, it would be great to meet you guys. Above all else, we honestly love Paraguay people. You've married a Paraguay lady so you know what we mean. Good for you.
I'm a single man so SE Asia is my destination. Plenty of women, big area to explore, excellent medical, English spoken commonly, never been to that part of the work. Might even make it to New Zealand for some world class Brown Trout fishing.
Good Information! Well Done!
I am from Paraguay. Welcome! At first I thought you were an Aussie but then of course later you mentioned New Zealand. Paraguay does not have a seashore and therefore it is impossible to compete with the beauty that a country like Nicaragua offers. But there are beautiful beaches in Brazil, in Camboriu and other cities, and also Buenos Aires and Bariloche in Argentina with their European influence and ambiance are readily accessible,
Gracias amigo. You guessed right, I am Aussie. I met my NZ wife there and then moved to NZ where we lived since 2009. I just say NZ because it's easier. Thanks for your insights and weather advice. We haven't been here long enough to feel the really cold nights. That will be a new sensation, we haven't had a pullover on for a long time. Thanks again.
@@ADirtCheapLifeParaguay Sure, now that explains your accent. Good. You will likely need a sweater or a jacket in mid-July or so. Enjoy Py!
Super helpful… as usual. Thanks bud!
Thanks for tuning in again, much appreciated.
I couldn't have asked for a better video recommendation. This video totally applies to me. Much appreciate you making this video!
Good to hear Ai is actually doing something good for a change! Thanks for watching.
Thank you for the clear comparison based on experience
My pleasure, thanks for tuning in.
This is a great blog Adam really enjoyed listening to the comparisons.
Hey Jacqueline, Hope you're well. Glad you enjoyed my ramblings. 😁
Insightful comparison, well done! That gives us a better understanding of Paraguay. Look forward to your continued videos!
Thanks for the suggestion Chris. I hope you're well up there.
I've been doing my research on Nicaragua for nearly a year now. I plan to move abroad in the next few years with my wife. Nicaragua is still my #1 choice, but I'm considering a few other options and I'm definitely going to start doing more research on Paraguay as well to see if it would suit our lifestyles :)
By then we may not be able to travel at all. Good luck though
A trip to Nicaragua is never wasted. I remember bobbing around in Laguna De Apoyo in a car tyre thinking 'this is as good as it gets.' Our favourite town was Granada. Like a movie set, so beautiful.
very welcome in Paraguay, you speak spanish?
Still learning. We find it slightly more challenging in Paraguay due to the Guarani but we will get there. It's awesome that Guarani has been preserved. We are very proud of Paraguay.
Guarani is easier to learn then Spanish, particularly if you have had some exposure to Pacific languages, ie Maori, Samoan. @@ADirtCheapLifeParaguay
Very informative video... SUBBED!
Thanks very much. I appreciate your support.😁
Excelente información, gracias por todo, lo tenemos en cuenta
Gracias!😁
That’s your point of view, for some people likes others don’t ,bottom line is money you can live happy in a shack or you can live in nice house ,car service people, there is nothing like home.
Thanks for spending the time to produce this video. I have a question: i am feeling that Paraguay could be boring for someone in their late thirties/forties. Am i mistaken? (not just in terms of activities and events but diversity of nature and things to do)
Honestly, yes, I think it could become boring. Especially when you compare it to places like Brazil and Mexico. Beaches, culture, bars, nightlife etc. But, apart from beaches, you can access all that Asuncion and Encarnacion. Not to the same degree as the others though. But here's the thing, I think it comes down what's most important to you. Remember, Brazil, Argentina etc are just next door, so Paraguay is a great place to be based if you are in a position where you can be mobile. Personally, we think that everything has a trade-off. It's just a matter of what you are willing to trade.
Very good video. As a nicaraguan I can confirm the energy costs are high. We only turn the A/C on when we absolutely cannot stand the heat😅. My best wishes for you guys in Paraguay.
Thanks for the message. It's tough with the energy costs considering how warm Nicaragua can get. Another challenge (not just in Nicaragua, but much of Sth America) is the way building practices have evolved. The original adobe houses were well insulated against heat but when cinder block came along the building techniques remained the same, however modern materials behave differently. So now most modern construction is like a heat storage battery device. It absorbs the heat of the day and releases it at night. So the need for air-con is increased. Once we're more settled here I am going to build some structures with alternative materials that will perform much better in terms of insulation from the heat. We have to find a way to minimise or eliminate the need for air-con. I hope things are going well for you in Nicaragua. In many ways my favourite place and people in the world.
Would be great if you could do a video showing rental properties and their costs. After all that´s the first thing we´ll all need when we get there. The garden you´re filming from looks nice, I´m assuming that´s where you´re staying?
OK, we will try to tee that up. Yes, the place where we filmed is where we are staying.
Definitively, no place like Nicaragua! 🇳🇮 You better buy property along the coast before the ( costanera ) super HWY along the coast is finished…
That's one of the worlds beautiful coastlines for sure.
Great comparison! I've sent time in Nicaragua and now Im planning to visit Paraguay. Would you say they're similar in climate? I've heard Paraguay is extremely hot.
Yes, Paraguay is hot. Especially from Dec through to March. Where we are in Caacupe it is still very green & lush though. The climates feel pretty similar to us. One of the key benefits of being in Paraguay over Nica is that the power here is much cheaper so you can afford to run the air conditioning! 😉
Can you give us a break down of average prices, utilities, groceries, rent, mortgage etc, thanks for your very informative video.
For groceries etc we have a breakdown on adirtcheaplife.com under 'Life in Paraguay.' We are situated outside Asuncion (near Caacupe). We pay aprox $270 USD per month for a nice 2 bedroom unit. Our last power bill was about $60 USD for a month but that was excessive. Because we are in a unit we have to run air-con, which is our biggest power guzzler. When we build we will ensure our place is well insulated, ventilated with a pool. Then it will be way cheaper. I can't comment about mortgages because we don't have experience with that. You can buy a decent car for around $3.5k USD. Public transport is crazy cheap. I hope that helps.
@@ADirtCheapLifeParaguay Thanks for your reply, quite interesting and Paraguay, wasn't on my bingo card, thanks to your video, now it is. Cheers my friend.
@@AugustoLugo1983 Our pleasure, see you in Caacupe perhaps!
If I make it to South America, will try to find you. Thanks again. very informative. and very enticing video about Paraguay.
@@ADirtCheapLifeParaguay You can also use Uber, inexpensive although I am not sure about its accessibility outside Asuncion,
We just spent 11 months in my wife’s home country of Nicaragua. We love cool weather so tried Matagalpa, up in the mountains. Still too hot for us. We have now been in Xela, Guatemala for 2 months. We are at almost 8000 feet. Low 70s for the high and 45-50 for the lows…..we LOVE IT !
Are there any cool weather cities in Paraguay we should consider ?
Thank you !
Xela, yes we've spent time there. Nice part of Guatemala. Regarding cooler parts of country, basically south is cooler, north is much hotter. We are in Caacupe area, which is a nice in-between. You've also been in Nicaragua, cool. We loved Granada. I'm heading back to Guatemala just for a few days. Only Guatemala City unfortunately. Thanks for tuning into our travels.
Yes, after investigating a bit, Paraguay may be like Nicaragua…great country but just too hot for us. Thanks very much !
Paraguay has very hot and humid summers (think Texas). There are no cool cities in Paraguay as there are no highlands.
@@therehastobesomethingmooreColombia has many nice highland cities.
We have been researching Manizales, Rio Negro, and towns north of Bogota….all cool temps. Thx
I want move Paraguay
I think that's a great idea!
How do you compare the weather in Paraguay and Nicaragua. Isn't Nicaragua exhaustively humid and hot, forcing expats to be confined to air conditioning 24/7?
Nicaragua varies considerably across the country so it's really hard to give an accurate answer. Both countries air-conditioning hot for much of the time. In the parts we spent most time Nicaragua was more humid than Paraguay. And to add to the complication Paraguay varies alot across the country also. Sorry, I know that's not a precise response. I can say for certain that both countries are warm.
@@ADirtCheapLifeParaguay The hottest months in Paraguay are NOV through FEB. It can get cold off and on from May to SEPT or so, sometimes down to 5 degrees Celsius or less. But it warms up again so it is not a constant cold winter weather. In the South of the country, in Encarnacion, it can get down to zero for a few nights, again intermittently,
@@ADirtCheapLifeParaguay How about Asunción? I guess either country needs a very good electrical grid .....
good video thank you. just subscribed #885 :)

Sadly Nicaragua aint what it used to be. Paranoid Govt not worth the hassle.
Sadly we tend to agree. Here's hoping for better days for that beautiful country.
What are they paranoid about? (genuine question).
@@NM-mc4rj they think everone is plotting against them. Any gatherings the Police shows up, they make up whatever charge they like and you can end up in jail.

Sir how about banking in Paraguay how about transfer money in other countries problem
We'll do a video on that soon. Thanks for the question.
Where my answer sir
There's many variables that would impact on the answer, that's why I said we would do a video. How much money, which country do you want to transfer to, what country are you a citizen of, do you have a cedula...and many more considerations. It's not a simple question and so we can't just give you a simple answer right this minute.
Very informative video. I've never been to Paraguay, but I've been to Nicaragua several times and always want to go back; nevertheless, what he says about Nicaragua is spot on. Getting things done, like getting a car, can be challenge. For some reason the government there loves to make thing overly complicated.
Thanks for the comment. Yes, life can be complicated there. We're up for complication, but only to a point.
When you say a Colonial home in Nicaragua isn't very expensive, what price range are you thinking of?
We almost purchased 2 Spanish Colonial houses (1 bedroom each) for $32k USD in Granada. That was a very good price but that's the kind of thing you can find. And I am talking about beautiful, original architecture.
@ADirtCheapLifeParaguay Wow, that's amazing! Thanks for your video it was very informative. We've been considering Nicaragua for a year now, we will start researching Paraguay.
@@raindances3310 Tough choices, both great for different reasons. You could always do a stopover in Nica on your way to Paraguay. But IMO you have to either live in a place for at least a few months or take the advice of someone who has. Good luck with your research. We'll keep updating our blog and there's info there that might be useful.
What’s the price for a modest home with a hectare of land in Paraguay?
It's so hard to answer that question. The property market here is all over the place. A rough estimate would be to start at around $60k USD but you could find wildly fluctuating prices on both sides of that figure. Depends on many factors of course. And remember, when you way modest house in Paraguay you really will get a modest house.
Is Paraguay alot different in the categories you mentioned to Uruguay? Why do people leave a beautiful country like New Zealand?
In terms of Uruguay, we haven't looked at that country as it''s part of the D5 Digital Nations Group. That's not our thing. Why did we leave NZ? Because apart from Canada I do not know another country that treated their population with a greater degree of oppression than NZ. It is an extreme Socialist country that jails whistleblowers and has zero functioning independent media. I could write a book about many other issues regarding NZ, suffice to say, we value freedom enough to vow that we will never return as long as that's in our power.
@@ADirtCheapLifeParaguay Very depressing, especially myself being in Canada. Who would imagine that a beautiful country like New Zealand would be swallowed up by the Woke lunacy. I wouldn't mind living out the rest of my life in Paraguay.... What are the digital nations group and what is Uruguay's connection?
@@dovygoodguy1296 You can Google it. Heaps of info, they even have their own website.
@@dovygoodguy1296 that is no grassroots movement, behind this are the mightiest people of the world who control the public by brainwashing.
What is the significance of Paraguay being a landlocked country??
Being surrounded by land gives it a buffer in terms of threats that can come from the sea...invasion, tsunami, drugs. Of course, that doesn't stop some of those things coming across the borders.
@@ADirtCheapLifeParaguay Such as airplanes (!).....and drones. Apparently the American empire has its eyes on extensive natural resources in Paraguay......Is Paraguay dependent on access to the sea through its neighbors?
@@dovygoodguy1296 We haven't really studied up with Paraguay's import/export activity. Not sure about who's eyeing Paraguay off but nothing would surprise me. As long as we can keep one step ahead for as long as possible I will be content.
After 11 years of visiting Nicaragua, this is probably my last trip. Not as friendly as it used to be. Yes, it's cheap, yes it's beautiful, but I'm bored of the food and the locals always wanting something from you. My property value hasn't changed since day 1. On the plus side, the medical clinic is free.
That's interesting insight. We did find the same thing with locals in some parts, particularly on the coast. From what I hear it's a global trend. I have heard slight murmurs of it here but mostly the locals are happy to see us here. But I'm not taking that for granted. We're focussed on becoming as integrated as possible. Living in bubbles just set people apart, and in the long run I don't know if that works out well.
The way you say Nicayraugoooaah is so strange. Am I saying wrong?
The way I say many things sounds strange. I have a speech impediment called Australian.
@@mighty_tone We should have a strange way of talking showdown. 👍👍
If only it weren't for the heat. That's why we move on. Even after a few years we can't get used to it.
It's definately warm. Thankfully the power is cheap.
Don't give away all these "secret" places - it's the best way to change for the worse.
Paraguay is definately no longer a secret. Our hope is that the info we provide will encourage those who are suited to this path whilst equally discouraging those who aren't up to it. This life is not for everyone, and we always try to show the reality rather than sell the dream.
Skynet has become self aware. Judgement day is inevitable
I like NIC. Very cheap. It has an edge. Friendly people. Only bad asses can travel. Or, don’t bother.
Me too, Nica rocks.
That's no my answer sir
Hoy sounds kiwi
Nicaragua is closer to many places in the Central American countries , Caribbean and USA
Unfortunately Nicaragua is ruled by by a dictator and his wife
Paraguay is cheaper and too corrupt
More expensive airfares to travel and very quiet
Why don’t you get immersed into the local community rather that expats ?
That’s the problem with people coming from English speaking countries
U should learn the language and enjoy the locals !
We are learning the language and enjoying the locals.
We are interested in dating, large gap relationships, how available and receptive are young girls over 18 there for old geezers? Is the Philippines the only country where age is not a problem?
I haven't seen a lot of large gap relationships here. Paraguay is very different to places like the Philippines, Thailand etc.
