1967 Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 Periscopica "Fléron" at Imola Circuit - Marco Cajani & Scuderia del Portello

- The Alfa Romeo you see is the 1967 Tipo 33 Periscopica "Fléron" brought to the Imola circuit by Marco Cajani, president of the Scuderia del Portello. Built only in 5 or 6 units, this is chassis 001 and is characterized by the box-type air intake that reaches the engine compartment from the roof. Hence the name Periscopica. Tipo 33 made its debut in competitions at Fléron Hillclimb, in Belgium near Liège, on March 12, 1967, and won the race led by Teodoro Zeccoli, the Autodelta test driver. The same year, brought to the track by Nanni Galli, won the Palermo-Monte Pellegrino Hillclimb. Also noteworthy is the fifth place at the 1000 km of the Nürburgring with the crew Teodoro Zeccoli/Roberto Bussinello. The Tipo 33 is very advanced in the design has an aeronautical-inspired chassis whose central structure formed by large Peraluman tubes arranged in an asymmetrical H that include the petrol tanks. The frame also has a magnesium alloy cage for the front suspension, radiators, steering and pedals. Another boxed sheet metal element supports the rear suspension and the engine-gearbox unit. The power unit is placed longitudinally in a central/rear position. We, therefore, find a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine that develops 273 hp (201 kW) at 9,600 rpm driven by a six-speed gearbox plus reverse. The bodywork made of synthetic resin and fibreglass is very light, 55Kg. The total weight of the car is only 600 kg; the minimum permitted value of the regulation. L'Alfa Romeo che vedete è la Tipo 33 Periscopica "Fléron" del 1967 portata in pista ad Imola da Marco Cajani, presidente della Scuderia del Portello. Costruiti solamente 5 o 6 esemplari, l'auto del video è il telaio 001 ed è caratterizzata dalla presa d'aria a cassoncino che dal tetto raggiunge il vano motore. Da qui la denominazione Periscopica. Debuttò nelle competizioni con la cronoscalata di Fléron, in Belgio vicino a Liegi, il 12 marzo 1967. Vinse la gara pilotata da Teodoro Zeccoli, capocollaudatore Autodelta. Lo stesso anno, portata in gara da Nanni Galli si aggiudica la vittoria nella cronoscalata Palermo-Monte Pellegrino. Da segnalare anche il quinto posto alla 1000 km del Nürburgring con l'equipaggio Teodoro Zeccoli/Roberto Bussinello. Vettura molto avanzata nella progettazione ha un telaio di ispirazione aeronautica la cui struttura centrale è formata da grandi tubi in Peraluman disposti ad H asimmetrica che comprendono i serbatoi della benzina. Il telaio ha inoltre una gabbia in lega di magnesio per le sospensioni anteriori, i radiatori, lo sterzo e la pedaliera. Un'altro elemento scatolato in lamiera sostiene le sospensioni posteriori e il gruppo motore-cambio. Il propulsore è collocato longitudinalmente in posizione centrale/posteriore. Troviamo quindi un 2.0 litri V8 aspirato che sviluppa 273 CV (201 kW) a 9.600 giri/min mosso da un cambio a sei rapporti più retromarcia. La carrozzeria realizzata in resina sintetica e fibra di vetro è leggerissima, 55Kg. Il peso totale della vettura è di soli 600 Kg, valore minimo consentito del regolamento dell'epoca. Beautiful car, cool sound. That was when Alfa Romeo was still the remnants of the powerhouse builders of race cars like Enzo worked for.
Exactly, in those years Alfa-Romeo started the adventure in the Sport-prototypes category with this model. Many extraordinary victorious models were born, cars that gave great satisfaction to Alfa-Romeo and that even more made it known to the world as a sports car manufacturer 👍

I'm glad you liked the video, this car is a true piece of Alfa Romeo history, and I'm very happy that it's often used for track events. Such a beautiful car! I'm rather shocked by the deep exhaust note, considering the small displacement. It sounds almost identical to a 5 liter Lola T70.
You're right; I find that this Alfa Romeo is beautiful. It's incredible how Italian style was so beautiful even in cars designed only for racing. As for the sound, I can guarantee you that the Lola T70 is much louder. I have filmed and seen many on the track. Having said that, Alfa engine to be only a 2-litre v8 engine its music is impressive 👍
@@Italiansupercarvideo I'm lucky enough to have seen many T70s running in person, and absolutely love them, but this Alfa is spectacular. I'd love to build a replica for street use, and maybe power it with an Alfa v6
@@apancher good lord, me too. Its my absolute all time favorite design of anything, end off. Imagine a kit car company like superformance or factory5 taking on the Periscopica and offering a 2L V8 engine (probably would come from 2 1000cc V4 motorcycle engines welded together). Its the only reason i wish i was rich, to build classic car replicas to perfection. Well im doing the next best thing anyways, i am making a World Sportscar Championship 1967 season mod for GTR2 and the Alfa is included!

If I remember correctly, the t33 stradale has the same engine as this except detuned, and it's a 2.0L flat plane crank V8. However, the Stradale sounds nothing like this. This sounds more like a crossplane crank V8 like that of the Montreal. Anyone know if this particular car has the original engine?
As far as I know, this car has its original engine.
Indeed this one seems to have a cross plane crankshaft, in fact, identical sound to the later Alfa Romeo Montreal V8

Quel motore è nato per quello, non gli fai male se fai un giro tirandola, anzi lo porti alle temperature per cui è stato concepito funzionare... Beh, come avrai intuito non credo ci fosse l'interesse nel farla correre. Il valore storico ed economico della vettura impone che venga trattata con le dovute cautele. Personalmente ho apprezzato il fatto di vederla comunque in movimento, su una pista dopo oltre 50 anni dalla sua costruzione 😉
