Alfa Romeo Tipo 33: The Racers’ Reunion

  • Gather up a handful of some choice racing cars along with a trio of top drivers who brought them to the podiums in the period and you’re bound to have a good day at the track. If those cars happen to be a trio of Alfa Romeo Tipo 33s, the drivers have the last names of Bell, Merzario, and Galli, and it’s all going down at speed on the same track these cars were developed on decades ago? There’s really no room for improvement if you’re a cross and serpent devotee. Join us as we accompany these racing legends-both human and machine-for an unbeatable track day at FCA’s private test circuit in Balocco, Italy.

An Italian guy talking in Italian about the emotion that goes into an Alfa Romeo race car is word porn in itself.

Ten minutes is simply not enough. Even though I've read books and seen documentaries on these cars and these drivers, I could listen to them for ten hours, not just ten minutes. But Petrolicious again does a great job of whetting the appetite of those interested in both period race history and Alfa Romeo history. I'm a Porsche/BMW guy at heart but I always give respect to the alfisti for their passionate devotion to the marque.

I have molto respect for Porsche and BMW racing cars/engines but the sound of a small displacement, high revving Italian, V or flat 12 is like nothing else. Even the Dino V6 had that unmistakable sound that sends shivers down your spine...

Charles Damery - wholeheartedly agree. I grew up addicted to motor racing in the late ‘70s by which time these guys and cars were already legends and mentioned in hushed reverential tones. My personal favourite would have to be the Porsche 917 in Gulf livery...going weak at the knees just thinking about it.
This is the generation that despite issues with engineering and design in the pre-computer era, just gone on with things without whinging and moaning, and won!

i am 76 years old so was there when these cars raced. Magnificent cars and the drivers were gods. Have seen them a few times since at vintage events. The sound of those ALFA engines is not to be forgotten... their sound will penetrate your soul. Today's turbo engines just don't cut it sound wise. Seeing those ALFA was what convinced me tuy my first ALFA.... a new 1969 ALFA spider which I kept for over 40 years and would still have it if I had the garage space. Today my ALFA love is for my 2015 4C Launch Edition I also bought new.

Basically before Monza he spoke to medics and told them he felt great, they did some tests and were doubtful to the point they told him "don't trick yourself to think you're fine", this situation confused and distressed him to the point he basically had a bad mood for the whole GP weekend.

The Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 dominated the 1975-1976-1977 world Sportscar Championship seasons.
In the last race of 1977 Season, at Salzburgring, in september, Alfa Romeo brought a twin turbocharged, 640bhp, 2.1 litres version of the Alfa Romeo flat-12 engine, it arrived second, behind the normally aspirated 3.0 litres one.
The turbocharged Renault F1 debuted the same year, in july, but never managed to finish a race that year, so the Alfa had been the first turbocharged car to end the race, to make points and to finish at podium in a world championship race, other than the first twin turbocharged one.
After this debut Alfa Romeo didn't participate to the 1978 season. The Alfa Romeo 33SC12 Turbo participated to a single race.

I saw an Alfa Romeo T33/TT/12 win the Watkins Glen Six Hours in 1975. On the straits it was deafening and sounded like it was tearing itself apart compared to the Renault Alpine A442s that were its main competition. Somehow it held itself together and won the race.
