    I love you for helping rather than shaming! I have a hairdresser in the family and I made her mad when I used box dye in middle school and explained why I shouldn't and why she wouldn't dye it until it grew out and I learned from my mistake and took care of it and went to her when I wanted blue hair or red hair in the future. Some people just need more information to learn from their mistakes.

In spite of the "fun" (!!?) of destroying your hair for youtube views, anyone who watches your videos will come away with knowledge and understanding and may just end up with a healthy, beautiful head of hair. Kudos to you for your patient explanations. GREAT job!!

    I have a hair question I'm hoping you could answer for me please! I get my hair done professionally & it's currently a platinum/white blonde but I see girls with platinum hair that has either a blueish or purple tint/tone to it. (Sorta like that youtuber Nicole Skyes. Her hairs platinum blonde but it looks like it has like a slight blueish hue to it. I think it's so pretty but how do you get that?? Are they using a toner or mixing a tiny bit of colored dye to the blonde to give it that blueish tint?? We've tried different kinds of toners (like one was called purple amethyst) but they've all had a barely noticeable, slight slight impact) it's almost like platinum blonde with a light hue of blue (I've seen girls with a light light purple hue as well) I just don't know what to use/how to achieve that! Toner makes the most sense in my head but it hasn't had a noticeable effect. I hope you know what I'm talking about lol but thanks!

    • @ShannonVanFleet
      @ShannonVanFleet  Před 7 lety +1

      Kali_Dash you're absolutely right with toner! But to get the longest effects and the most impact, you'll want to use a tinted conditioner every time you wash your hair. I really love the Redken one and the Pravana one! Im sure your stylist can get one for you easily with minimal wait!

    I just found your channel like 10 minutes ago and I'm already obsessed! I do have a question though. I have a mixture of wavy and straight hair, it isn't dry but it's not oily, if that makes sense. But I was told by a woman at sally beauty salon to use a 30 volume developer when dying my hair ( I have magnet colored hair, so I'm dying it every 2-3 weeks) and I just feel like my hair is getting weaker and not that same texture it was before I had red hair. Should I get 10-20 volume developer, or is the 30 volume developer ok?

    • @ShannonVanFleet
      @ShannonVanFleet  Před 7 lety +2

      Sisser hi! So glad to have you here! The 30 vol is most likely appropriate for your roots, but putting it over your ends every time can be catastrophic. I suggest refreshing your ends with a demi permanent color and 10 vol, or a direct dye (even more gentle)

    Is using protein treatments in my bleached hair a bad idea? Is their good protein and bad protein?

    • @ShannonVanFleet
      @ShannonVanFleet  Před 6 lety +2

      Protein is always a good idea for lightened hair! In the past there were proteins that were used in products that would build up on themselves and cause the hair to be “too strong” to where there was no elasticity left and the hair would snap. But those aren’t used anymore! Keratin is the best to use for hair of course because that is what hair is mostly made up of.

      That Girl With the Dog I was lucky enough to have my local college offer it! I may write a blog post on it, because it seems to be a common question! It's definitely a rare thing to see anything besides licensure, unless you go into cosmetic chemistry, which you don't technically even need to be a cosmetologist to do. The program I went through was for already licensed cosmetologists who where looking to obtain an applied science degree majored in cosmetology! I hope that made sense? 🤞🏻

I've never colored my hair because its curly and thin and delicate(like, i have a lot of hair and lots of volume, but each individual hair is super thin) and i'm always terrified of damage, that;s why i blow dry it or flat iron it once every few years, mostly for my friends benefit because my hair comes from mid back length(curly) to like under my hips(straight) and it looks awesome. and I've always, always wanted to color it but i looove my hair and the idea of messing it up or loosing my curls terrifies.

    Typically the box colors come with a 20 volume from what I’ve seen in my many years behind the chair but now with some of them I see not that I buy them or work with them but some now come with a blonde boaster which I assume would be like the matrix extra blonde ing cream idk but I’ve seen many customers come in thru the years who had dark hair come in with the orange brassy when they tried to go blonde at home with color so that is my understanding of box color

    If I wanted to do a DIY balayage on my hair (I have very dark hair almost black) and I want to make it 2-3 shades lighter (espresso/chocolate brown) would I need to bleach my hair for this or can I get away with not using it at all and what developer would I need to use? I've never done anything to my hair before but I just want a little dimension in my hair but I don't think paying $200+ is worth it but at the same time I don't want to screw it up.

      sophisticatesc If your hair is all virgin, then I would choose a level 5 or 6 permanent dye and pair a 30 or 40 volume with it. If your hair is fine or dry go for the 30. If it is course or super healthy, go for the 40. However if your hair is not virgin, you will have to use bleach which I suggest seeing a professional for!

    • @ShannonVanFleet
      @ShannonVanFleet  Před 7 lety +2

      Kerima Delibašić hi!! You'll first need to "fill" just the blonde area. To do this properly you have to fill every two levels with the respective undertone. So if you are a level 10, you will first want to use a level 8 gold. Then a level 6 copper. Then a level 4 red. After that, you should be safe to use the black all over! (Make sure your filler colors aren't TOO vibrant. You want it to be a more natural base. And make sure you are using oxidative dyes) (That's the procedure most professionals would take in the salon!)

    I have a question. I was dying my friends hair a while back (now before everyone yells at me for doing it at home I dye and cut my own hair quite often and will going to cosmetology school soon so I know some things more than just picking up a box dye at Walmart and slapping it on lol) while I was dying her hair I ran out of the bleach half way through her head (this girl has ALOT of hair took nearly a tub of powder bleach for just that half of her head) so being strapped for money and time (it was late and she had to go to a family event the next day I know I know we had great timing lol) we went to Walmart to pick up a box dye that, at the time I thought was the kind that I had used in the past when I couldn't go to Sally's and get some more of the bleach and dyes I usually use, but it didn't do anything at all to her hair. I now realize that it wasn't a bleach dye it was just a blond dye, thank you for that information, but her mom obviously got upset because only half of her head was blonde (and very nice looking if I do say so myself very little coppery tones and no missed patches) so she took her to a professional, but the pro couldn't even get that side of her hair to lift after over three rounds of bleaching. Can you explain why something like that would happen?

    • @ShannonVanFleet
      @ShannonVanFleet  Před 7 lety +2

      Oh my gosh what a story! lol! As far as the other side not taking as well- as professionals, we are obligated to remove the lightener after a certain amount of time (whether it is lifted enough or not). We have to follow this rule because if something were to go wrong, and we got sued; if we weren't following the rules we could be SOL and have our license revoked and be out a career and a lot of money!

    • @rhiannondealing7750
      @rhiannondealing7750 Před 7 lety

      Shannon VanFleet thank you for replying! I can not wait until I have my own license and can call myself a professional! I guess do understand the whole it would take more time because of her previous dyes and the dye that I did on her. Her hair is thankfully not damaged and she is now a very wonderful looking red head to cover the two sides 😊

    I've trier to go blonde with box dyed too many times that I dont want to admit to haha needless to say, now I've discovered bleach and peroxide, I had blonde hair for a year before changing it up again! Lol but I miss the blonde, PS my hair was not fried, I used a mix of loreal shampoo in a black bottle with pink or red lid and then a hair oil and switched it up every so often with Palmolive shampoo in a green bottle

    • @ShannonVanFleet
      @ShannonVanFleet  Před 7 lety +1

      Sure! I may make a whole video on it, actually! Simplified: I went through cosmetology in high school and then went to my local college for my applied science degree! I can go into greater detail in a video though!

    • @sharnellpa
      @sharnellpa Před 7 lety

      Shannon VanFleet thank you so much. I am a colourist as well. I educate for Matrix. I always wanted to take some chemistry courses but wasn't quite sure how to get there being that I did the opposite of you and went to cosmetology school directly after high school. I love the content of your channel. Very helpful!

    • @ShannonVanFleet
      @ShannonVanFleet  Před 7 lety +1

      sharnell Bussey Oh awesome! I educate for Redken but used to use matrix and loved it as well! #lorealfam! Talk to your local college admissions and see if they have an applied science degree in cosmetology. If not, they may actually be able to create the program for you. It was awesome because a lot of my theory work that I did in beauty school transferred as credits towards my degree and I only needed about two more semesters before I had everything I needed to graduate!

    I've watched many videos of 'hairdressers reacting to hair fails' and by far the two you have made have possibly been my favourite. I like how you don't tend to turn your nose up at the fails because for some of these people who have done something bad to their hair without the education, the last thing they will need is a bitchy hairdresser laughing and judging them as they are probably feeling low in confidence, they need guidance on how to fix it which is exactly what you do. (you've got a new subscriber here :) )
