Carpenters is the third studio album by American music duo Carpenters.[1] Released on May 14, 1971, it was their most successful studio album, reaching number two on the Billboard 200 chart and number 12 in the UK, as well as being certified 4× Platinum by the RIAA. The album contained the hit songs "For All We Know", "Rainy Days and Mondays" and "Superstar".
It has been said that the strength of these recordings is what caused Richard Carpenter to ask his sister to front the band for their live performances instead of playing behind the drums. Amongst many fans, the album has simply been referred to as "The Tan Album", because the original LP cover, complete with overlapping flap, looked like an oversized tan envelope,[2][3] and is presumably a play on The Beatles' so-called White Album.
In Cash Box's Top 100 Albums of 1971, Carpenters was listed as one of the year's ten biggest albums.[4] This is the first album to feature the familiar Carpenters logo.
All lead vocals are by Karen, except on the tracks "Druscilla Penny", "Saturday", and the "Walk on By" segment of the Bacharach/David Medley, in which Richard Carpenter sings lead vocal, with Karen in the background.
The album and its singles earned Carpenters four Grammy Award nominations including Album of the Year. It won the Best Contemporary Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus. - Hry
I adore the Carpenters... we always listened to their albums in our house growing up...they were really nice people... would always wave at me when I was riding my bicycle around the neighborhood... Richard was always driving and I could always see Karen's big beautiful smile and white teeth as she waved...
We were In disbelief when we lost her....Mom and I ran across Karen in the ladies dept at JCPENNEY in Downey when I was 7-8...1970-71... Mom and I would always drive to their house to admire the Xmas decorations...🤗❤️🇺🇸

Lived Karen Carpenter, had all their albums as a teenager and cried when I heard she'd passed. Taken way too young
R.I.P.
In hind-sight, Richard just should've left his sister behind the drums in live performances.
It wasn't Richards fault...the producers... selling Karen when they didn't have to ...
@@jamescoleakaericunderwood2503 I know it wasn't just Richard, but he had a say in it. He even said in a interview that "Yeah, we had to drag her out from behind the drums. The audience couldn't see her behind her drum kit because she was only 5'4" tall"
@@zigman8550 I grew up in Downey waving to Richard and Karen riding my bicycle around from 69-78 , they must of known someone in my part of town .. Karen had the biggest whitest smile..and big hands for such a small person...are you sure she was only 5'4" ?? Mom and I ran across Karen while in the lady's dept at JCPENNEY in Downey...I was only about 7 years old...I guess she seemed tall to me at only 7-8 years old 🤷...
Such a beautiful voice! We had all their albums!
@@jamescoleakaericunderwood2503 I don't know myself but that's how tall Richard said she was in the interview. It's on CZcams. I think it was a morning talk show in the UK that he was a guest on about 5 or 6 years ago.
@@zigman8550 I googled it! Yup 5'4" ... she was tiny!
I miss Karen's voice. I remember being so sad when i heard she died..
