As a Bengali, I've heard from my elders that the Bengali weavers here used to make sarees so light that you could pass them through your marriage ring 💍. But then the British came in, broke their looms and thumbs so that even if they recover they won't have that finesse in their work. They put taxes as high as 80% and forced these weavers into farming indigo for them. We were basically treated like their slaves. In 1859, these former weavers and now presently indigo farmers revolted against the British with violence. Many of our leaders were martyred but ultimately they had to stop indigo farming temporarily in 1860-62 and permanently in 1900.

However, hearsay propaganda is not a trustworthy source for a debate on history, especially when it's from an Indian nationalist perspective. We know your kind of 'history' - it's in every 2nd Bollywood movie. And you wonder why British news outlets might be biased against india (seen on WION yesterday)...?
We know for sure that British breaking thumbs of loom weavers is a myth. It's not more trustworthy just because Tharoor said it, it's a blatant lie.
You are trying to imply some sort of colonial policy here. Truth was different though. Historians have noted that unlike the "First War of Indian Independence", the Indigo revolt did not direct their hostility towards the British colonial authorities but instead focused their attention towards European planters and merchants; historian Subhas Bhattacharya noted in The Indigo Revolt of Bengal (1977) that the "movement began and ended as a struggle against the planters." It was the planters who made malicious contracts with some Bengali farmers. In 1860, the British colonial authorities formed the Indigo Commission due to Nawab Abdul Latif's initiative with the goal of putting an end to the repressions of indigo planters (by passing the Indigo Act 1862).

See one thing that most people think that mughal made india rich is wrong -
India was the world's largest economy with a 32.9 per cent share of the worldwide GDP in the first century and 28.9 per cent in the 11th century. In 1700, when most part of the country was ruled by Mughals, India had a 24.4 per cent world GDP share, higher than entire Europe's 23.3 per cent.
so ....
But you are not taking into account that 24.4 percent from 1700 during Mughal times is much larger amount than the 32.9 percent in the first century, the reason why India was so ahead because rest of Europe were in the dark ages but even after Europe and china catching up in the 1700 , the Mughal India was still able to have such a large share, not even taking into account that the discovery of the Americas had fueled the rest of the Europe to develop rapidly even then we were ahead

Todays Germans are not to be blamed for atrocities of nazi, despite that, they admitted their countrys wrongdoings....they apologized, sincerely. They even paid for reparations done during WW2.
When it comes to Britain, they, as a country (not people individually) are not apologizing. Two reasons comes in my mind. One, they actually dont feel sorry, and feel that they did India any favor, two, they cant afford to say sorry. They maybe think it will/may cost their economy too much. We are trying and somewhat succeeding, to bounce back.
We are not a developing country, we are a reclaiming country.
They should apologize on global stage, and give us (and other colonies) everything they looted from us.

nothing changed, cuz it wasn't people of Britain nor its government nor its army, but one company which ruled over India; now, that company is split into many and they still rule over India and almost (?) any other country... countries are recent invention (last 100 yrs) which serve for the company to protect its interests, collect taxes, bring oppressing laws, pay the police, army and bureaucracy, run the jails, brain-wash the children and adults, etc. The Company doesn't care if one is Indian, Mexican or Papuan - if they see their interest they'll come to take it by force and tricks

The reason British able to control India is because of their value system. Indians were taught to follow non violence and treat the world like a family . I am happy that the younger generation is revalidating these principles and seeing countries the way they are

I think we were invaded multiple times because we were fighting among ourselves and betraying our selves.
Only kings and their Army was responsible for our protection and because of caste system in Hinduism only warrior caste people stood up and rest of us kept tolllerenting Invaders.
I think that's the main reason Sikh gurus formed Sikhism to make people United and bring warrior spirit in them.
Being a Hindu my self I would have hoped Sikhism to have spread to the whole sub continent.
Cast system was brought in by the British! It was used to categorise people by trade. Do not confuse it with The Varna system which is. Model for society. Kshatriya is warrior and Hindu families would send their mature sons to be a kshatriya they made up the fighting army! Real Sikhs are sanatanis. We need sanathan dharma to spread not a religion!!

The most educated people in our society are Brahmins, so they must have figured out that caste system was not prescribed in any of our scriptures yet they kept on practicing it.
Why do they still hold the temple priest position, which is exclusively reserved for them. Why can't they follow verna system where anyone can become priest by simply learning vedas, etc., and by showing their devotion to god ?

And India was always rich and well off even before the Mughals invaded. All the invaders be it mughals or British just looted and tortured Indians. Our scriptures were burnt which contained so many mysteries and knowledge of the universe. Some of them were stolen. We were advanced even in the ancient times but the invasions was a reason that our success came to a recession. And we were known to as a land of poor.
