      Games don't need to be expensive. The current mid-budget AA games look and play as well as the AAA games from not that long ago.
      Not saying there is no place for big-budget AAA games, but publishers should diversify their games with more smaller budget games they can make in a reasonable amount of time. Despite all the issues I have with Square-Enix, they do develop a lot of smaller budget games (like Live-A-Live, Star Ocean, the recent Valkyrie Profile game, the Bravely series, etc)

    This is called "Enshitification" and every large platform seems to be going through this cycle: Start out making it valuable for consumers (ie. almost free games), and consumers will flock to the service. Companies will then hop on to take advantage of the large market and it works well for everyone. Eventually the consumers will become dependent on the platform and not want to leave. From there, creators will also be pressured to rely on the platform to market their product, also becoming dependent. That's when the platform owner starts tightening the screws. The consumers and creators are both captured, so the owner starts extracting more money out of them while offering worse services: Tiered subscriptions, hidden fees, more ads, fewer promotions, the list goes on.

  • @khoulwhip
    @khoulwhip Před 3 měsíci +1

    Here's my conjecture: first of all, Microsoft, long ago, abandoned the whole "console wars" thing. They had made that decision even before releasing the Xbox Series X/S. Their focus is squarely on live services and the whole "games as a service" (GaaS) model to generate perpetuating growth income (honestly, the stock market expectation of never ending exponential growth is an unsustainable prospect that will lead to self-destruction, but that is a rant for another day). It would not surprise me that buying and killing studios is a means of methodically eliminating future competition in the form of alternatives to live services and GaaS. Essentially, such maneuvers are a business investment to ensure that they have the only game development capacity and capability in existence, and that capacity and capability is dedicated, entirely, to the development of Microsoft owned live-services and GaaS-based games. Don’t be surprised to one day find Gamepass existing even on PlayStation.
    There's really only one thing that can ever stop all this nonsense, and it's the one power that gamers, as consumers, have always had, even if they have often failed to exercise it. JUST STOP BUYING IT! These companies chase money; it's the only thing they know and understand. A company hears and understands PRECISELY TWO SOUNDS, the creak of your wallet opening and the slap of your wallet closing. ALL OTHER sounds ARE NOISE to be ignored.

  • @sevhoss

    I don't think Hi-Fi Rush met the success long term. If it met metrics, then they would have kept the studio. A good game does not guarantee sales and sales is the only thing that matters to a business. I know it's an obvious statement but I feel like people just keep forgetting. We may all love Hi-Fi Rush, but for Microsoft, it did not make the profit they were looking for. This is a multi trillion dollar company, just making profit is not enough, the profit itself needs to be up to MS standards.

An actual Japanese company developing Japanese Games... And Microsoft closed them. They sent a message loud and clear that They don't. Its heartbreaking and a Middle finger to Eastern Game Development companies and Microsoft's own player base and their "Ecosystem." Sony fumbled out the gate with the $599 pricetag for the PS3. It was a doozy at launch and hurt Sony for a few years until 2009 when Killzone 2, inFamous, and Uncharted 2 sold systems. The latter detail added would be the $299 price tag. It took Sony till E3 2013 to completely change everything. All it took was Microsoft trying to force people to go with shoddy DRM practices and only able to use the game and share it with 10 people and the pricetag that changed the gaming industry on its head "$399, and you can keep and share your games, sell it,or keep it forever."
    That E3 Sony nuked TF outta Xbox and hilariously humiliated the Microsoft company only to have Phil Spencer reverse the DRM decision 10 days later.

That way the studios still make their money and then its available on game pass. I think the most promising thing about game pass is the library of games that it has. I think getting rid of day one releases on it won't affect numbers that much and gets rid of the chance of new releases not doing well financially because game pass sucked it all up.

    I think blaming hi fi rush to not have micro transactions farm and make redfall a failure not even arkane fault(that's not why they shutdown arkane, but still), doing a very poor job on making their games x box console exclusive, not separating more of their games from gamepass, putting good games on gamepass and buying studios for 43 BILLION dollars. It should not conclude on shutting them down and only make games that are micro transactions farms like fallout 76 and cod like they say.
    In my opinion, i never spent a dime on in-game currencies and I'd rather play single player games. Its more refreshing than playing the same game multiple times.

    Great video as always NSP!!
    This is just my personal opinion... but I believe most "average" gamers would be better off not as games pass subscribers. Like I get everybody says it's a great value for the consumer, but I'm just not certain that's true for most people. Sometimes it's easy to forget that most people don't have as big of an interest in a huge variety of games that people in the "youtube sphere" would. Most people don't buy/play enough games to make it worth it. Furthermore, not every game you're going to want to play is going to be on games pass (although for a while it seemed like that was Microsoft's goal). When you start thinking about how many people love free to play games and the ability to buy many games on huge sales throughout the year, I just think games pass loses a ton of its supposed value. As with all subscription services, it's easy to forget to how much it adds up to on a yearly basis. I do consider myself a pretty hardcore gamer (PC, PS5, Switch) so maybe I'm too overloaded as a working adult to take advantage of the games pass value but that's just my random thoughts!

  • @Artahe

    Also, here's my theory as to why they shuttered those studios: Activision and Game Pass. More specifically, the combination of spending THAT much money on not only acquiring Actibision Blizzard, but also the legal fees that surrounded that purchase, AND the cost of maintaining Game Pass, must have drained the finances so much that Microsoft noticed.
    What I mean by that is that before all these shenanigans, the Xbox branch was... profitable. Not enormously so compared to the rest of the company, but it wasn't losing that much money either, so it was left alone. But now that they spent an ungodly amount of money acquiring studios, ESPECIALLY Activision, the proverbial Eye of Sauron is on their asses, because now they have cost so much money at Microsoft that they need to make up for it, and make up fast. So, sure, for the Xbox branch, Hi Fi Rush was a success, but if you think about just how much money they have to recuperate from that buyout spree they had... it may just be that it was never going to be enough.... for Microsoft. Not just the Xbox branch.
    Be that as it may though, it still doesn't excuse anything. If anything, they fucked up when they decided to purchase those studios, thinking that name recognition alone would grant them success. A combination of horrible marketing decisions (Game Pass. Again), subpar games (Redfall, arguably Starfield, among others), and the fact that they probably would need to break record sales after record sales to recoup on the buyout spree means that they put themselves in a lose-lose situation, which means the studios lose, not the execs.
