  • This opening was only used for a few episodes. It proved unpopular.

Never saw this intro before, wow.

The alternate sponsors for season five were Lever Brothers- and The Toni Company {I believe}, Roy Rowan announcing. Lucy just didn't like the way she looked as an animated "jack-in-the box" {with grotesque face!}, and insisted the season four title be reinstated....

I could see why she hated the jack in the box thing.

No wonder Lucy hated this intro. Who wants to see their head popping up out of a Jack in the Box?

"CBS presents this program in color!"
If I couldn't afford a color TV in 1965/1966, I'd be quite annoyed by this. lol. My mom says that my grandma didn't get one for their house until 1969.

My family waited until 1970. The 25" RCA console put out so much radiation that it gave our cat cancer. We weren't allowed to sit within 6 feet of it.

Yes, that last image of the grotesque Jack-In-the Box was too much. Rather vulgar. The question is why was it used at all? And why was the concept bought in the first place?

I stopped watching after the kid's were fired, the show was never the same.

I think after Vivian left, the show was never the same. There are those who say she preferred to ease into retirement with her new husband, and those who say that Lucille wouldn't dream of giving her the pay raise she sought and an opportunity to periodically direct. You may say I am in the latter camp.

Yes, I agree. Even though I own the whole series on DVD, I only watch the first three seasons. I never watch the California episodes

Is this intro shown in the reruns, or was it pulled?

cd637299 It was pulled after two airings and not seen for years. Oddly when CBS showed the series in daytime reruns they removed all of the original intros with the exception of season 1 and used the famed kaleidoscope opening for seasons 2-6 with Vivian Vance’s name dubbed over Gale Gordon’s name for seasons 2-3. For a few episodes in season 4, they used the music from this opening over the kaleidoscope opening.
