The Sabre seemed like it was better made and was more ergonomic but it was not as effective (Amazon affiliate link): amzn.to/2GMe10A
As with all self defense weapons, we found that if you don't actually have unarmed fighting experience and skill, the weapon will not make that big a difference. Seek qualified instruction and practice regularly in whatever technique or weapon you intend to use for self defense and familiarize yourself with self defense law in your jurisdiction.

Sorry to say Mike, as much as I respect your vids this one is bullshit infested, and the fault lays on your side. You know that first thing happening when she starts to struggle(and sometimes even before that, coming as the very first move) is the hair grab and pull until she loses balance, punch, overwhelm and then rob. You say you know the reality, where have you seen a robber jiujitsuing his way with a female? Sorry, Mike BUT IMPROVE, B#TCH! Greetings from Gdańsk

Almost all chicks do it to each other instinctively when they fight, why? Because obviously it is extreemely effective. Thats why I do think you should get a better stunt(wo)man for those experiments, or make an agreement with her to actually risk the reality-based simulation. Don't give out false hope that she got more than 5-8seconds. Looking forward to some collab in the future, cheers

I'm a little disappointed... lol, I agree the fault with this test lies with the fact you knew what was coming and dealt with it from the get go, and few crackhead bag snatchers practice bjj. But mostly I'm upset you didn't get zapped hahaha, top score to your better half though mate, she made you work for that.

While you make a good point in trying to test with an untrained participant, I think it would be interesting to give her more 'play-time' to get familiar with the weapon and to struggle through various scenarios, then see if she can improvise her own strategies that allow her to meet particular criteria under pressure: e.g.:
Can she find strategies to deploy?
Can she find strategies to retain the weapon?
Can she use it as a effective deterrent or goad to achieve a goal (such as to cover an exit)?
Can she prevent the attacker from carrying out a specific action or from moving in a particular direction?
Can she protect a loved one?
Can she actually shock an attacker?
Can she use it in a stealth counterattack?
Can she use it as part of a mixed strategy? (e.g.: combine it with a strike? combine it with flashlight mode?)
It would be hard to come to a valid broad conclusion about whether this tool would work for all (or most) women, but it should be possible to get a sense whether it is a good self-defence tool for an individual.

I think that a problem with carrying weapons like this is that in the heat of the fight, your assailant can disarm you and use whatever you're carrying against you. This happens a lot with youngsters involved in gangs here. And I suppose if one wanted a piece of advice about staying safe on the street, it would be this: Pay attention to your surroundings and leave your phone and mp3 player in your pocket.

    • @johnhiggs325

That tool should never be seen by the assailant, only felt just before they can make contact. It is a weapon of last resort like a knife or pocket gun. That's what happens when you have somebody who got the weapon, and never bothered to practice with it. And then, on top of that, they're fighting against somebody who *does* know at least a little about proper use of said weapon.
And really, the odds of someone disarming you and using your own weapon against you, in a fight that *you* didn't start, are substantially lower than the odds of them having brought their own weapon in the first place when they're picking the fight.

Some good pepper spray or a handgun would do the job better than a taser because you can use it from a distance. If you're a woman it's very important to keep your distance and not get into physical altercations... you will very easily be overpowered, even if well trained. Jiu jitsu can help in a one-on-one scenario. But if he has a knife, you pretty much just have to do what you're told unless you're in a position to make run for it.

I can tell you even if you carry a taser, it won’t be enough if you are immediately jumped from behind or surprised attacked. According to an abduction victim who carried a taser on her keychain, if you are jumped from behind your first instinct is to put your arms up, fight, or escape. Your mind isn’t thinking about grabbing that taser because it takes TIME to grab your taser from your purse/pocket, scrambling to switch it on, and then try to use it. Your mind is only thinking about survival, so by the time you grab your taser and switch it on, you would already be completely overwhelmed or knocked out to use it. It’s a sad and realistic situation.. to get the most out of your taser, you would need to physically hold it in your hand, secure it using a wrist band, and leave it switched on while out in public. Most of the time that’s time consuming because when you walk indoors you would need to put it away. The only persons who would benefit most from their tasers are joggers.

      @alphazuluz Před 4 lety +19

Drakilicious the problem is “stun guns” like these do NOT use neuromuscular incapacitation like actual tasers do. These are pain compliance tools. Basically, they just hurt. Tasers actually make you lose control of your body. Also, these require you to be in physical contact with the person trying to harm you.
In my opinion (and for MY wife) a firearm and pepper spray on your body are better options. They give you distance and actually incapacitate people better.
If a woman the size of my wife (5’2” 120lbs) came at me (6’2” 200lbs) with a stun gun and I was trying to harm her, I could punch and knock her out before she could even reach me. Literally. My arm is 12” longer than hers.
If you’re in America and want to protect yourself, a firearm (and training) is the best option. The one caveat is that it MUST be kept ON YOUR BODY. Purse carry, car carry, backpack carry are all stupid. Those are the targets most thieves are looking to steal (so they just stole your purse AND gun) and they make a quick draw impossible.
If you are serious about defending yourself, a firearm is the best tool. I think pepper spray is a great tool for the majority of situations though, and grappling training is also right there with them. I think stun guns are near useless against a determined attacker, especially if they’re larger than you.

Really interesting video. This illustrates two points: (1) Situational awareness is your first line of defense. The simulated encounters depicted here begin when "untrained woman" is blindsided, but what if she realized she was being followed/targeted and had time to ready herself in advance? She might have been able to deter her attacker by simply making it clear that she knew he was coming and she was prepared to defend herself. (2) You need to know how to use and rapidly deploy your countermeasures in case you ARE blindsided. I always carry an assisted-open folding knife clipped to the inside of my right-hand front pants pocket. I can have it out and open in literally a split second. I wouldn't recommend a knife in general for most self defense situations due to the legal issues involved, but it's a great deterrent against a group of unarmed potential thugs. Anything in a purse or backpack, however, is just too far away to be useful.

The triangle formed by the arms and hands provides lots of strength and protection. Similar to a short stick or knife. You're so right about training and I love how it is so well shown. I really like this. Please do more. Pressure testing with real women is so hard to find. I know Ramsey does some of it and it is useful. Most of what we get is this complete compliance self defense crap.
My freshman year of collage I was attacked at night while walking back to the dorms from campus. He had a rope in his hand and attempted to get it around my neck. I did a lot of stupid stuff that night that I would never in a million years recommend to other women. One, I knew he was following me. I should have gone into the 7/11 that was on the way and got them to call the cops. I instead kept walking. He kept getting closer. I was in a horrible mood, I just wanted to get back, so I didn't listen to my instincts and get help. It could have ended badly for me. There are a couple of things he didn't know about me. I had taken various martial arts for over 7 years and was prepared to fight, and I was f...king pissed off from having the day from hell. He got within a foot of me, attempted to use the rope. I turned around and started swinging and yelling as loud as I could at him. My first punch was a back fist that grazed his arm that was holding the rope and my second punch missed because he started running. I chased him... another dumb butt move. I am pretty sure he wasn't prepared for that. He ran about 60 ft away then turned around and stopped. I then made a b-line for the 7/11 and called the cops. They didn't find him. Needless to say I was scared out of my mind, but glad that I made it away unharmed.
This incident taught me quite a bit. The first, trust your gut, even if you think your are being paranoid, just bare on the side of caution. The second is that confrontations are never going to be what you expect. Had I not managed to scare him away who knows. He was strong and fast, he could have killed me. I had no way to predict the outcome. The third thing would be to train, train, train. Especially if you are going to carry a weapon. I started carrying a legal self defense weapon after that... Just in case there was no place nearby to run.

I ignored your disclaimer because I was watching your video on my phone while walking home from the Self-Defense Store and was abruptly accosted by several Street Fighters (oh no!).
The Street Fighters ensnared me by forming a circle and shoving me back and forth, sneering at the extremely practical Self-Defense nunchaku I purchased for just such an occasion. I seem to recall at least one or two making a "b*ttplug" joke that I found HIGHLY INAPPROPRIATE, but expected from a gang of ne'er-do-wells in green mohawks wearing fingerless Billy Idol gloves.
Well....I didn't want to do this, but I used my Self-Defense nunchaku. And somehow I'm now sort of strangling myself with them by accident. The Street Fighters ran away, presumably because they mostly get off on low-grade bullying and not actual murder, but I probably only have a couple seconds before I pass out.

@@hard2hurt Well Mike, very little is the short answer to that question. Germany has some the most stringent firearms laws in the world, so there's no conceal and carry. I would like to say this means no gun crime, but I'd be lying (last Friday I was caught up in the aftermath of a failed bank robbery in Frankfurt, where shots were fired). That said, crime is statistically at it's lowest level since the early 1990's and is a lot lower compared to where I grew up (Dublin, Ireland).
Pepper Spray 'for usage against animals' is allowed (my female students carry these in a pouch over their index finger ... in case they're attacked by a "dog"). Knives of up to 2 inches in length can be carried. However, switchblades and butterfly knives are banned (so are thowing stars and numchucks). Carrying sticks, say for Arnis or Kali practice, is a grey area - the police prefer to see these in a bag (my Shillelagh was frowned upon recently). Personally I have a fist sized flashlight (your influence) and a key-smart in my pocket.
The joke is that you can get all the fun stuff in France or the Czech Republic and you never get searched at the border 😀

People can train MMA or other fighting sports to learn to fight but those with a physical disadvantage that be handicap or age SOL.

First: great video, your wife seem prerry badass for someone with no training and Madox look so much like his mother :)
    A few thoughts...
    1. I think alot of people view self-defence tools like protective amulets rather than weapons you need to get out and know how to use. "If a bad guy show up I got a taser in my bag" is not that different from "if I meet a evil spirit this silver cross will make it go away", it is both about using a item to comfort you when you think about scary situations. As you say tasers and other weapons/ selfdefence tools can be viable but only if you are able to deploy and use the reliably.
    2. I belive the title of this video is a bit problematic... in what situation will the untrained woman be able to defend herself with the taser? We all know that there are situations where a big, trained man with a gun cannot defend himself effectivly and there are situations where young children have been able to defend themself. Imthink a better question would be "will a taser help a untrained woman to protect herself?"

    • @AstralS7orm
      @AstralS7orm Před 5 lety

The question is the mindset of the attacker.
      1) If it's an ambush, untrained people are generally gone unless they're lucky. Even more spirited ones.
      2) If the attacker is trained (or even a rough punk), doubly so.
      3) If it's a counterambush, hmm, maybe perhaps. But as we said untrained, untrained people rarely do good counterambushes.
      4) If it's just a threat rather than attack, then a counterthreat is probably viable, but the thing does not look threatening enough. It is likely going into a fight with weapon fixation on both sides, making it luck-based again. A fake gun would do much better. (a real one would bring problems without training) Fire a loud cap for example.

Great video. My hats off to the female. Even without the taser, she's no easy target. His wrist grab was her biggest problem, finding the trigger was the second. Show her how to twirl her arm out of a wrist grab, and into popping him in the ribs. Its unstoppable, frees the arm, and is easy to learn. This way, her finger will stay on the trigger a lot longer. Learning this one move, along with a little practice finding the trigger fast, then she would dish out more punishment than most would want to handle. To twirl, lock your wrist and arm from turning, then make your hand go around the holding-hand's fore arm (ether direction works fine). As you sweep underneath, the hold will break.
The best defiance with a taser, is to show the suspicious person the arc as they approach. With this, most bad people like an easy target and will keep their distance. But if you ever pull any weapon, you better be prepared to use it. As this video just demonstrated, to really be prepared, some training is necessary and the taser must be in-hand when needed.

I carry the Sabre stun gun every time I leave the house, especially when my wife is walking with me. It is always in my hand, armed and tethered to my wrist. As this demonstration has indicated, there is no reason to carry such a device unless you take these steps to ensure you’re realistically capable of defending yourself from unexpected encounters with human & animal assailants.
A few gripes about the Sabre... the contact points where the spark is generated (at the business end of the gun) are prone to becoming loose and mine have actually fallen out a few times, almost getting lost. I was able to repair the unit, but this was not long after I purchase it and it hadn’t been dropped or misused. Since I test the spark every time I carry I know it’s almost always necessary to toggle the main switch a few times before it works. Furthermore,, both a safe / fire mode indicator and a charge indicator light seem like essential features to ensure operation in high stakes situations & to avoid accidental self inflicted shocks.

It doesn't look affective as a fight stopper, but it looks like it works great as a keep away. No one wants to get shocked. Body jab with taser, and step in overhand when hands drop/move mid section back & run. Obviously, this is talk, but id like to see this done again with taser in lead hand and not used as the fight ender but a set up for a fight ender.

Best line of the whole video was at 4:36 when she started taking control "I'mo fuck you up."

    Things I see:
    1. You knew she had the stun gun. If you were a bad guy, you would not necessarily know this.
    2. Because of #1, you went after it as defensive tactic. You even said this.
    3. She needs to learn how to get out of a wrist grab.
    4. There were multiple times she could have easily reached back and jammed that thing into your leg and zapped you.
    5. Of course as you said, no matter what you do, what rules, there is no life or death involved. Results are skewed.
Because of all this, the video is very informative! Know how to use it without looking at it, situational awareness, and training - the zap does not need to be to the upper body.
    Kudos!

If you're high watch the punching bags. No, seriously, great video guys. My friend used some medicinal marijuana before watching this and became fixated on watching the punching bags swing. I, however, learned a lot from the video. I'm trying to learn how to best teach my wife to carry a stun gun. Thanks for the information guys, great job.

I love that you walk through the scenarios even when you don't think you need to. I love the energy between you and your wife. I love the balls it takes to tumble like that with her on camera (I've been a fight coach to my wife/partner and can relate). I love that this is something people can point to over and over and get something from it.

Hi, great videos and thanks for the demos as they were a real eye opener that training is essential. I must say that both stun guns are really toys as the discharge voltage is only about 7 to 10 kilovolts. A half decent one is 100 kilovolts. If you get hit with that game over. Most of the decent ones have a easy access trigger, but guarded so you cannot be forced to fire it. If the probes are not at least one and a half inches apart on contacting your opponent, the shocks are not given to affect or penetrate fully. Perhaps you could review a decent one that you would recommend to your customers. Thanks from Australia, wish I could get there for some lessons,I really need them. Be COVID safe!
