If anyone else was wondering, it is not actually made from calf skin, it's a synthetic material.
    Sounds good :)

I recently purchased a Pacific Limited Edition 7 1/2 x 14" maple/walnut snare drum. Shortly after I purchased it I replaced the OEM batter head with an Evans '56 Calftone head. The difference was immediate. Not that the drum did not sound good with the supplied batter head, but I wanted to 'warm it up' a bit and give it a bit more depth which the Evans head did. I used to use Remo Fiberskyn heads and found that they have a tendency for the top layer to delaminate a bit with aging. So I tried the Evans Calftone heads and they give much the same effect but so far they seem to hold up better. I have found the 'faux calfskin' heads to have sort of a built-in 'dampening effect' much the same as putting a small piece of dampening material such as 'moongel' or duct tape on the head to cut down on excess ring or overtones. If that's what you want the synthetic calfskin-style heads may not be to your liking, but for my style of playing (jazz, blues, church praise band) the Evans Calftone heads work out well for me.

Heads like that are designed for the higher tunings. Listen to a lot of Jazz records, or your old Funk bands. Their drummers used these types of heads back in the day.
