- This started out as a half log. It displayed some wind shake so I decided not to turn it. Here is the link to the original video showing the whole piece. • Avoiding DISASTER or A... I reconsidered and came up with a plan. I'm glad I gave it another chance because I just love the outcome! In spite of my mistake in cutting it, it turned out great and is a real beauty! Finished in shellac.

The joy of another Phil video is supassed by knowing you feel well enough to make it.
Thanks, James. 😊
Yes. Love this guy. Probably the best page. His work is fantastic but the personality is even better
“If it doesn’t hold soup, it’s art!” All your pieces are art, Phil! The master of the natural bark edge strikes again! Well done, Sit!
Haha, so true, Danella! Thank you so much! 😊
The grain is spectacular!! I think it's called coffee wood bc you're supposed to enjoy a cup of coffee while watching you turn this great piece!!🙂👍
Ahhh, that makes sense, Ron! 😊
You created a beautiful work of art with this piece.
Thank you so much 😊
Let's say it together boys and girls... "mask and faceshield on!" So much fun!!! Thanks Phil. I hollered for a glue block, I even faced northwest and hollered twice... no response, but the recess worked good too. Always a treat to watched you create...
Haha, I gotta get hearing aids, James! 😊
Beautiful plate. It does qualify as a plate. One surprise is that I keep feeling some of these are ALL my favorite piece! I guess 'my favorite piece' has to become a category. So far there are about 6 of your pieces that share that category together, and I like each one of them as much as the others but differently. Maybe art is just that way.
Beautiful plate...or maybe sculpture. 👍
I'm just glad you like it, thank you, DC! 😊
Hi Phil I am so blessed to have found you Chanel you know I see these people that have channels and are totally silent not one word that is so nutty to me they don't share their experiences with us and I'm a rookie and know little. Well I say thankyou phill you bless me a lot tim
Thank you, Tim, for your uplifting comment, much appreciated! 😊
The grain on the bottom is so beautiful and interesting just to look at. The top is very beautiful too. The bark is fab
Agreed, Judith, thanks! 😊
Hi Phil:
This is my first time writing to you even though I watch you faithfully every evening. I love watching you-your talent, your bowls, your personality and down to earth demeanor. I am saying prayers and wishing you good health. Looking forward to watching another bowl turning session.
Kate Murray
Thank you for sticking with me, Kate, much appreciated! 😊
Nice one, Another awesome turning by Phil! With a beautiful bark and grain, perfect turn and finished... He'll never let us down... How's it going over there with you?
Beautiful, Phil! Love everything about this turning. I live in Kentucky and have never had the privilege of turning the Kentucky Coffee Tree. I'll be on the hunt for some now. Thanks!
There you go, enjoy, Greg! 😊
What a lovely...dish! That is, a shallow bowl. I Like it!
Thank you very much! 😊
It took me 24 hours to watch the internet. On life support. Beautiful.

You blow me away Phil! So glad you are feeling well enough to be working or should I say playing. What a beautiful wall ornament. You are and will still be in my prayers. God Bless you sir.
Thank you, Bob! 😊
Hi Phil. After some quick research this is what I found:
The Kentucky Coffeetree is a member of the legume family. It creates bean pods, inside of which are hard bean like seeds which when consumed raw are toxic. They can be roasted at 65C (150F) for 3hrs to neutralize the toxic alkaloid. When steeped it produces a dark colored, rich tasting often bitter drink that is 'like' coffee, though it contains no caffeine.
Thanks again for the info! 😊
good choice, Phil.
Peanuts and peas are also part of the legume family.
You had me curious, so I had to check. The Black locust tree is also in the legume family! It also creates bean pods! I sprouted about 30 seeds about a month ago, and all of them came up! They're about 3-4" tall now!
Well that made me chuckle because I always say it with you…all of it. Yeah I don’t get out much I know 😊 Great job as ever!
Haha, it's great we get to laugh together, Sarah! 😃
I agree… it is beautiful. Good job Phil!!
😊
Such a lovely grain in this piece and a fantastic turning. So glad you are still the best turner out there Phil we all love your channel. Stay strong my friend 👍👍👍😊😊😊♥️
Thanks a lot, Kelvin, I appreciate your support! 😊

That is very pretty wood, another magnificent bowl, platter, plate.
Whatever, LOL! Thanks, T! 😊
Another piece with stunning grain and color. 💗
😊
This is stunning, Phil. I’m so happy you could incorporate the bark border, and the grain design in the middle of the piece is a lovely highlight. This ranks right up there in the top group of my favorite Phil turnings!!! Kudos!
It has grown on me too, Helen. I'm so glad you like it, thank you! 😊

It is a dish Phil! Fill it full of candy! Nice!
Pretty big dish but if it's for candy, OK! 😊
Thank You Phil, Thank You Tricia Humphrey...HA, Phil I LOVE YOUR ADVENTURE IN THIS TURNING!!! Hammering the end, wrong saw blade, angled cut...(now back to the show)... Classic "Shady Acres Wood Shop" turning. Making the very best from a very thin oops cut board. GREAT ONE PHIL Your experience payed off by not taking too much off and breaking through on that thin recess. ( i would have broken through without a doubt !) Love that bark. Perhaps turn more Coffee Tree wood in the future ??? Until next time Phil.... .... TM
Yup, lots of adventure in this turning, Tuffy! LOL! Did everything wrong but then saved by the beauty of the wood itself! It's kind of a favorite already. Thank you and congrats on the early day off! 😊
Another miracle just performed Phil you the best ❤
😊
What a gorgeous transformation! Beautiful. I always love listening to your narrative.
Thank you, Eileen! 😊
Nice one 🤠 how's it going over there?
The grain is beautiful amazing never thought you could turn that thin a piece of wood
Another beauty in the books! Always envious of how easy you make it look to turn the live edge pieces. Thanks again for your time and knowledge. Very happy your are able to do what you love because i sure love watching. Stay well friend!

Beautiful work Phil as usual. Hope everything is going well with your treatment. Know your in our thoughts and prayers.
Thank you, Charlie! 😊
The Kentucky coffee wood is very beautiful and looks amazing Phil take care and God bless
Thanks, Mike! 😊
Lovely piece Phil out of a something that did not look worthy. Then you make turning this super thin bowl look
So damn easy. Wish I had a fraction of your talent. Looking forward to more like this Phil.
😊
I really thought you would struggle to make something special from a skinny wedge of wood but there you go, a great piece.
Thank you! 😊
Love it Phil - looks really nice - I'm glad you got back around to turning this piece! I hope you're doing ok, you're in my thoughts!

Thanks Phil, glad you could make a video. I loved it.

WoW... how brave was that. I've had so many pieces of wood like that and they all ended up on the wood burner being too afraid to turn them. NOT any more. Cheers Phil yet another great vid to watch.
Excellent! Have fun turning some different types of wood pieces, Alan. Once you have a couple under your belt, it's all you want to do! 😊
Great job Phil! Beautiful grain in that piece and the live edge looks wonderful. Glad you're feeling well! 🙂
Thank you, Bryan! 😊
Phil very very beautiful what a artist you are I love your videos Franks woodworking Oakdale MN.🔨
Very nice piece Phil, that Kentucky Coffee Tree is beautiful wood! I had some a few years ago and I looked great on a project! Well done and thanks!
Cheers Al
Very cool, thanks, Al! 😊
Beautiful really beautiful bowl! Just look at the colours!
😊
LOVE the contrast of grain & bark too. Would look perfect on a narrow sofa table AFTER you took it down off the wall.
Cool idea, Chrissy! 😊
This was a real fun one to watch Phil. Amazing how it looks like we mess something up just to find out it worked out even better.
Probably would not have worked for all the high school test in my English class LOL
The colors are really amazing. I am wondering if it gets it's name from those colors.
Now I will be sitting around wondering just why you have not signed it. Way to get me hooked on watching next week. Like I was not going to watch anyway!!!
Keep those great turnings coming my friend,
Gary
Haha, gotta leave'em guessing, buddy! No big secret and now I hope I can pull it off! Feel like I'm running out of good time but, I'll get it done, I just know it! It is good that this piece worked out, I had my doubts when I walked away from the bandsaw. You should have seen the bend in that blade and then what happened when it cleared the wood! It was so scary I deleted the video, didn't want to see that again! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop I would delete it up as well. Not fun when he a band saw blade decides to cut a vertical radius and not only doesn't ask but it won't even let you choose the radius. But you should it whose boss!
Well you hang in there and do what you can do and when you can do it.
Yes there can be a lot of adrenaline around a band saw. We had a 36 inch band saw at work that would cut 18" thick. When the blade broke on that one the whole shop would duck under their benches LOL.
I never had one break but saw and heard it a few times.
Dang that is work talk and I gave that up 10 years ago. But for some reason I had a dream about work last night. Somehow they talked me into coming back....dang that was scary!!!
@@ThePapa1947 LOL!
You’ve created another beautiful art piece! Awesome way to use a dovetail!
Cool, thanks, Michael! 😊
Oh My Gosh!!! It is Beautiful ❤❤❤
Surprised me too, Bonita! Thank you! 😊
I stand in awe of your skill Mr Anderson , that piece of wood would have ended it's days in the fire box .( Roo Williamson , England )
No, never the fire box! 😊
Great turn Phil! I was nervous as you made your final cuts inside, but your skill came through again, and you nailed it at the perfect depth! Beautiful piece, from a beautiful wood.

Cool, thanks, Wes! 😊
OMG 😲 I have fallen in love with Kentucky Coffee wood....it is so, so beautiful 😍 and I really want this piece!
I am also so grateful that you are still feeling up to putting out videos for us 😘🥰 Thx bunches.
Thank you also to Trisha for sending this beautiful wood to Phil bc it turned out fabulous!
(Did I see you access port on your left forearm? I know I'm not supposed to ask such things, occupational hazard I guess...lol 😆)
That's just a band aid. Port is in my chest. 😊
Very nice job Phil that Kentucky coffee would looks beautiful. And as always you saved another piece of wood. It turned out better than I thought it would great job
Thank you, Michael! 😊
Thanks so much for sharing this video. I have so many cut offs from the sawmill that will work well with this technique. So glad you are on the mend
Glad it was helpful! 😊
What ever you call it………… End product is beautiful
Thanks, I appreciate that! 😊
Another Phil masterpiece! I always enjoy watching your videos. What lathe do you use? I use a shopsmith but I'm wanting to step up to a bigger dedicated lathe.
Thanks, Kevin! Mine is a Jet 1840 and I love it! 😊

Phil you were able to take an oops and convert it into a lovely turning. Thanks for yet another interesting video. Please keep them coming. Cheers, Tom
Sometimes those oops turn out better than we hope, Tom. Glad you like it, thanks! 😊
When I grow up, I hope I am as good at this as you are. However, at 62, I may have missed my chance to grow up. That turned out really nice. great grain and color.
I was 69 when I bought this lathe and decided to become a turner. You are still an infant, get to it! 😊

Thanks for spending some time, Margaret! 😊
The times I have thrown away or burnt thin off cuts similar to your original piece and until now have not seen any possibilities of turning them into useful items. From now on I will be studying each piece with the knowledge that they could become a useful item. Thanks for the videos Phil
No such thing as firewood if you have a lathe, Chris! 😊

🙋♂️🏴 Hi Phil good to see you well enough to work at your lathe. I had to look back at your passed videos to remind myself of why you didn't turn this piece before, then I remembered that I was hoping to see the results because the bark looked so good, and it didn't disappoint great little piece. Oh and you are teasing us again with signature/no signature looking forward for your reveal. Thanks Phil.

Your decision to thin the bark enhanced the width of the light colored wood and contrast all around..work of art!
Cool, thanks, Ron! 😊
Thanks Phil! Enjoy your site so much. You make me feel bad for tossing out so many thin pieces of mulberry etc! Going to give the thin stuff a try!
It's fun to work within the confines of a smaller or thin piece, Ray. It gets my creative juices flowing. "What can I do with this little piece?" Glad you will give some a try, have fun! 😄

Nice one, Another awesome turning by Phil! With a beautiful bark and grain, perfect turn and finished... He'll never let us down... How's it going over there with you?
Oh Phil, what a happy accident cutting that fine was! By it being so thin every ring in that grain was allowed to be the star of the show. Gorgeous... its funny even though your titles tell me it turned out well I still have that heart in mouth moment when you tell us how thin it is then start scraping a bit more off 😂
You're right I often chorus "mask and face shield on" with you. Probably sounds peculiar with me trying to imitate your accent in my Kentish English one but I like to keep you company 😆😊
Great idea for hanging it on the wall btw, no, I hadn't thought of that, it's genius, the simple ideas are often the best.
Thanks Phil, take care 👍😊
It's fun hanging out with you, Jude, thanks for spending some time with me! 😊
Yes, that is a beautiful piece of wood that you have turned into a beautiful platter. It is called a coffee tree because of the beans it bears; like the mesquite tree in my back yard here in Tucson.
Gotcha, thanks, James! 😊
Another great little piece. Beautiful wood!

I didn't think you'd get anything out of that wood .... I need to stop thinking when it's you at the lathe!!! Love the little saucer with its beautiful grain and bark. You're just an amazing woodturner and a kind gentle man. Thanks. ♥️😊
Thank you very much, Mary! 😄
Another very enjoyable beautiful piece and enjoyable video
😊
Well, Mr. Phil - you've done it again. I am just back from several days fishing at what is known as "A Traditional Maine Sporting Camp". Lotsa wood gets burned at those places and I scavenged a piece of ash slab from the kindling pile. Very dry and although the bark is gone there are some really promising bumps over a good deal of the surface. Not quite a dead ringer for your coffee wood pretty close including a fat end and a skinny end. You have steered me well, as you always do. Now I need to go try to do a decent Phil imitation at the lathe.
Oh, the coffee wood is a lovely piece of work by you as usual!
Tom
Thanks, Tom, good luck with yours! 😊
