- We sit down with Boris Johnson's director of communications, Lee Cain.
In the last 48 hours Rishi has accused Starmer of being a threat to national security and a delight for Putin, a work-shy sloth who clocks off at 6pm, and a leader who's going to rig the electoral system forever more.
Is this the sound of a man who thinks his campaign is going to plan?
Perhaps the problem began long long before Rishi Sunak called the election - or even got into power.
We ask the man who presided over Boris Johnson's 2019 campaign - Director of Comms Lee Cain - if he accepts the rot set in with him. The lies, the Covid parties, the narcissism - and the opportunities missed by the last Conservative PM to hold onto his massive majority.

Lee Cain is appalling, blaming others. His advice to Boris The Clown has caused a multitude of problems.
He said is was austerity doing the damage, but that was his parties idea, its what they insisted was the only way, now they admit it was their choice just a pity it did so much damage, but some of us were saying that it was and would from the start.
As with all his kind, it's always someone else's fault. The whole party and its machinery have worked off the premise of never accepting responsibility or accountability for years now, Johnson and the people around him accelerated that exponentially.
@@matthewn1805 Yep, Brown and Darling formed a plan post 2008. Got EU and USA to do it .
2010 government then went the other way and against the favoured plan and went for austerity. They had chance to invest at 0% , pulling in other investors.
The resulting growth and living standards prove how poor an ideology
@@31Blaizefrom backgrounds where you don't fail, just something new comes along
I was just following orders .
FFS - Boris was always on Holiday and Dominic Raab was on holiday during Afghanistan crisis!
Imagine if Starmer was away writing a book instead of being at cobra meetings while the biggest national emergency in living memory was kicking off. How would the story press have handled that?
To all those who are bemoaning Starmer for wanting to spend time with his family at a decent time.
I would hate for you to be my parents.
How dare he try to be HUMAN ! (says the people who says he is too robotic)
Well said.
If he was observing the Sabbath on a Sunday, I’m sure it would be fine.
Lee Cain exposes himself here as a worm.
We already knew.
He is very slimey. Just like his erstwhile boss! Birds of a feather!
Worms are useful, even necessary, nay vital for our ecosystem. This guy has never thought about anything else than himself.
Bit harsh on worms, they serve a purpose!😉
@@LeafHuntressYou beat me to it!😂
"I'm not going to defend Boris Johnson..."
Fascinating interview with Cain, who proves that he is still the slimy shower of deceptive poison that he always was!
I'd somehow never heard of him before, and yet from a standing start I wanted to puke after about three minutes. He's the real McCoy!
@@davidf2281lol this was literally my experience too, after 3 mins in I skipped to the end
"Boris has a colourful turn of phrase..." Emily Maitlis: "He lies!"
Can't put into words how wonderful that was. And that she held her ground and called out his attempts to word salad and sugarcoat the selfishness of the conservatives.
Really wish she were here in the States more often this year. Excited for July 4th for y'all almost more than I ever have been excited for it as an American 😂 after the past couple weeks though, I think that even though that was intended as a little joke, it made me realize that it's not about how exciting/important the 4th is or has been in the past - it's that the stakes for both our democracies are so so so high right now and y'all are offering a beacon of hope
Apologies for rambling on a bit! Sending solidarity and from the rebellious teenage state y'all spawned 😝😆
@@sempressfiThanks mate, hope your country wakes up from its nightmare. Your great nation of 350 million people are confronted with the choice between a wannabe dictator narcissist and a decent old bloke who should be renovating his porch. There is something wrong with your system! Cheers from Australia.
Well done, Emily, for calling out this toad.
Started with Cameron calling a referendum. Everything came from there ...
Agree. Calling a referendum to manage a political party’s internal affairs is a fundamental bad. He thought he was a political operator, he turned out to be a poor gambler.
I wish I could disagree. But it was fear! and the hope the people are predictable
It all started in 2010 as a result of proven failed Tory austerity.
As for Brexit, even Peter Hitchens said the Tories sacrificed the country for the party.
Boris took months off to finish his book - this even continued in the run up to Covid... one of the reasons he missed so many COBRA meetings!
He actually sat there and inflated the hospital promise from 40 to 50.
Well noticed!
this mans inability to be honest, kinda proves the point. Depressing how lying is seen as ok.
Boris lied Rishi went along with it all and carried it on, in my opinion. You won't get higher productivity out of underpaid workers who are literally starving using food banks. This guy is living on another planet. The rich got richer the poor got poorer.
Except gini coefficient has been basically flat since mid 90s.
The underlying issue is the poor quality of the electorate. 15m people voted for a party led by Bojo. Come on.
Half the electorate are below median intelligence, one of the burdens of democracy. As Churchill said, it's the worst form of government, with the exception of all the others. Government is a necessary evil only acceptable because it is better than no government, and democracy is the least evil form of government.
Lee cain was johnson's constant companion in the gutter
Dominic Rabb, on holiday while Kabul fell and a lot of British allies were let down. Seriously… 😮
* Raab
Tories are utterly pathetic.
People like this guy are a part of the problem of British politics.
Is this the best gbn can do.
25:18 I like that Emily is obviously having a hard time disguising her absolute contempt for this worm.
YES YES YES. Leadership. You nailed it Emily. Don't Lie. Tell the Truth.
Lee will now forever bear the mark of Cain. He is just not able.
Survation latest poll giving Labour a majority of 318 seats don't think nick Ferrari will be happy.
500 seats for a single party is rather terrifying - especially when that party's main policy is "well at least we aren't the other lot"!
@@quintuscrinis8032wish it could be more.
@grahamdhv3812 why? What are Lavour actually offering?
To me their manifesto and policy announcements have basically read: "Sunak and May with better PR".
It's as if you haven't seen the other lot.
@paulyap4057 if that is to me, I would point out that there are at least 5 parties that I can vote for in England. So which other lot are you meaning?
Personally I have no interest in the Tories (whether they are wearing a blue or a red rossette). This country needs real, meaningful change, not just the better branding that Labour are offering!!
No contrition. No remorse. What a disgrace
There needs to be an investigation into government contracts issued to Infosys and the Sunak crime family.
as if any tory works past 1pm on a Friday....or any day for that matter.
I hope only a tiny minority are working past 1pm THIS Friday and those that are are suffering from PTSD because of the trauma their party has just suffered.
Remember Wine Time Fridays.
Nice of the Tories to put so much effort reminding everyone of Partygate just before polling day.
Can't afford a holiday in 48hrs? I haven't be on 1 for 10 years!
Holiday vs NHS.
Emily Maitless is utterly brilliant. Thank you
Bojo lied a lot even as a journalist.
Sacked for it, twice. Lying so badly about Europe that was even too much for the anti EU press.
With Bojo it's always easiest to assume he's lying until proven otherwise.
@@theother1281 has that ever happened?
@@stevenwilliamson6236
I can only think of examples when other people told him what to say.
Complete tory desperation
Wheeling out Boris johnson
To try and save them
They cannot defend their
14 year record
So we are subjected to a fear campaign
No hope just fear
I feel I need to go wash in bleach after that interview
Of course, but inaction man backed Spaffer in 2019, and all the way through covid and up until the chaotic summer of 2022. Inaction man brought this on himself, and the end of the political party that the Tories deserve.
Great job Emily.
ironically people are waking up..... from a 14 year bad dream...!!
What's iconic about it ?
The Rot started with Cameron and his we are all in it together lies.
Wipeout to Help out just a day away now.
I urge you to read John Crace's politics sketch in Tuesdays Grauniad. Brilliant.
Love all three of you!!! The best journalists
The rot has always been in the Conservative party…
Wake up and take responsibility for it .
When someone says "...change the country for the better..." the question is always: "Better for who?"
Director of comms under Johnson, presumably that means chief liar and excuse artist
Rishi wasn't dealt a bad hand, he accepted a bad hand.
If only he'd said he wanted wine time Friday, not family time Friday, they'd all be supporting it!
No, Lee. No. The bigger question isn't why you couldn't build the 40 hospitals. The bigger question is definitely why is it ok in your mind to lie to the electorate and say that you could?
18:49 Then why not stand on these issues instead of the "lie of 40 hospitals". Answer: because you would not have been elected!! So instead you told blatant lies!!!
In the advert, how did they manage to run the water-cooker without electricity?
in the tory ad...how did he boil the jug?
That was what i was thinking. Those kettles don't work without a plug. They should've shown an old one on a stove top!
Inconsistency thy name is tory party.
"Im not here to defend borris"... proceeds to defend borris and blame everyone else but borris and himself.
Not a word about Tory antisemitism?
Lee Cain: You facilitated a liar => you weaponised lying, you destroyed trust, and you continue to defend the lying. Why should you be treated differently from any other fraudster/conman, be assessed for your dishonesty and serve a long jail term?
Wow I mean wow so desperate
Obviously, why is this even a question.
Lee Cain is the best labour advert.
It wasn't me, a big boy did it and ran away! This guy exemplifies everything that is wrong with the Tories, wants to take credit for anything positive even when it had nothing to do with them and rejecting any blame for the problems they had a direct hand in creating!
David Cameron - a PM who was so chilled out that he left one of his kids at the pub.
Lee Cain helped to create the rot..
Who would have thought? Boris' comm's director completely unable to take personal responsibilty.
This man demonstrates all that was wrong with Conservatives during this hateful period of their history.
Hopefully 15 years out of power will bring them to their senses.
Love Emily's bait and switch with Lee. I bet he didn't expect the bodyblows in the middle of interview 😂.
Lee Cain....your ridiculous ill fitting suit and you are talking in clouds.
The hilarious thing about the Tory attack advert is that they’ve completely missed the fact that if you replace the newspaper headline with “Liz Truss doubles your mortgage” it’s pretty much my experience of 2023.
Johnson promised 40 new hospitals not 14.
They never complained about Cameron’s date nights !!!
It’s the worst kind of desperation because it’s full of hypocrisy
Can we point out he had not said he won't work on a weekend. I cannot believe the level of media interest in this
As soon as you say you’re not here to defend Boris, you’re absolutely defending Boris.
What an absolutely vile individual. Typical of the tories. Lies and lies but it's never their fault.
14 years of Tory Failure and misery
Lee Cain's mental model of reality is strange to my mind
Emily lands another Prince Andrew like interview with Lee Cain. She's unstoppable.
Didn't Boris Johnson have an afternoon nap written in to his schedule each day. 🤡😴
Yes but you have to remember he did this in a very Churchillian way.
Quite bold of the Tory strategists to bring the conversation back to the topic of leaving early...
In any case, working long hours does not equal being productive. Maybe Starmer will set himself up with staff that schedules his day in a way that he gets his stuff done with 2 hours to spare on the Friday evening?
His children are teenagers. Lets be honest here, they will hardly take that much of his time on a Friday evening :D
Perhaps those who sneer should learn more about Lady Starmer's Jewish heritage. Sunset on Friday is the start of the Sabbath, which is marked by a shared family meal. This is a tradition which even Jewish families who are not otherwise "religious" have followed for more than 2,000 years - part of the "glue" which has held them together to survive the diaspora, inquisitions and the holocaust. As a teenager with a Jewish girlfriend, I made time for her to have dinner at home on Friday evenings; she made time for me to attend church on Sunday. [NB also what T May used to do on Sunday mornings!]
Make him answer the effing question.
The Tory's campaign has been as addled as Ferrari's head at the Friday night non-story.
The serious rot started when after the 3 post-Major duds the Tory party chose Cameron as leader, Etonian Bullingdon PR spiv.
Not here to defend Boris then defends Boris and refuses to call out blatant lies. Obviously still in the Boris camp hoping for a future job. Disgusting. How dare he dictate what makes the electorate not trust politicians.
'There's not a lot wrong with the state'.......Is this for real? Council budgets decimated, public services on their knees, poverty, rickets, malnutrition, schools crumbling, hospitals crumbling. Sure, everythings tickety-boo.
Cain is a moral vacuum made flesh.
People should rise up Sunak with Partygate Boris. Remember the Hurts of Partygate that Sunak hope it's forgiven!
Soon gone also got a fine for those parties & one for not using a seat belt. The Crime minister.
Go Emily! Very impressive interview with the slimy Mr Cain.
Lee cain, MAN UP, you were responsible for not telling Boris & the campaign to stop lying, & not telling what was possible & what was not.
Some are skipping over what he said, and opining as if they hadn't. He said there would be exceptions, but he was still committed to an already-existing family pattern. In my book, that is a decent family man who also recognizes his responsibility to the State. There is no there, there. Calm down.
The rot started with Cameron's lies in PMQs
A scouse tory... what a disgrace.
The rot started when he became a wef puppet
Was it cain or Cummins i just listened to. Great job Emily and team.
Brilliant interview by Emily, gets to the very heart of problem.👏🏼 Typical deceitful Boris, ‘everything OK as it is / too hard to change’ etc. But wasn’t OK or hard at all to speak about change when playing on people’s fears & lives during Brexit campaign & in order to get into power. That deceit’s continued with Liz Truss, Sunak & rest of party - I’ve never seen this level of lies & misinformation in our politics ever! That public mistrust does now affect Starmer & Lab too, rubs off on all politicians & Tories have been pushing that mistrust of him. No politicians are liked much atm, we’ve all become disillusioned.
How do you boil a kettle in a power cut- asking for a friend…
And the electric alarm clock.
.... "who helped him hide in a fridge?" that is the question for which we need an answer! Lawd help the UK.. I'm off to vote now.
These Tory attacks and spin are so pathetic that they are almost adorable. (I AM A CHICKENHAWK AND I"M GONNA GET ME SOME CHICKEN!) But along with the pity I remember the damage that has been done and get back to rage.
Thanks for posting
Track and trace ? 37 point 5 billion. Where is that money ?
"I like Boris". Oh we haven't spoken in 4 years but he is a great mate.
You cannot trust Cain. His career highlight was dressing up in a chicken suit. Absolute weapon.
Prioritisation, simplification and repetition. Honesty? Irrelevant, obviously.
Glad that Matlis is asking hard questions. The other journalists have forgotten how to do that.
This is such a great show!
[Mastermind theme:] ... and your specialist subject is ... 'answering the question I'd have been preferred to be asked'
Politics is all about power. Lee Cain was doing his job. The rot started with Cameron, plus the 3 word slogan.
I remember Boris and co having quite a few holidays when important things were happening.
It's a classic case of transference. All they accuse Labour of is exactly what the Conservatives already have done.
I respect Starmer for saying that he will try and keep his Friday evening family time. He'll be literally working in his house.
