    I built a bottle filter a while back and was too broke to buy the fluidized media so I used some ceramic Biomax type media I already had thinking that they should work just as well. Glad my lack of funds worked out for me! :D

      Natascha Perkins- this is my first time here on this channel, and I'm a bit lost, I googled ceramic biomax and found this Aqua Clear 30 filter insert? This is new to me, and the guy is it Joe, goes by so fast that I could not pick up what he was referring too, other than the "ceramic" and I was totally lost...can you digest this for me please??? I have a 10 gallon tank and use the charcoal filter from Aqueon... I was looking for vacuum system that runs on battery, I'm tired of the siphon hand one, that I have the hardest time to run...it sounds like this is better? Or is this in conjunction with the traditional set up??

    Nice filters for small tanks. Twenty five years ago when I was dating my wife I gave her a fifty five gallon aquarium with a custom stand and top that I had built. Set it up with rocks and gravel, large plastic plants and several dozen african cichilds. Since she was new to fish keeping I ordered two pond sponge filters that were round and about the size of a small coffee can. Added a one inch pvc riser and topped with a power head. I placed one at each end of the tank and told her to rinse one out each week in old tank water, alternating each week. That tank ran for years with nothing more than water changes and washing filters. The fish grew large and thrived.

      Hello, I've been reading your book recently. I'm confused over what my type of filter is. It's an efx200 from Maidenhead aquatics. I'm confused because you have to fill it up with water before you start it, so to me it seems like it might be a submerged one. But then the water is also continuously flowing through it, so it fits the criteria for the emerged, and it could also be fluidised, because the flow of water surely knocks the filter media around. I might be thinking too much into this but I would appreciate if you could tell me what the best media would be to use in place of the carbon.

    Keep in mind that some of the fibers can get sucked up into the impeller of the power head .I would advise putting something like a dish scrubbing pad in-between the pump and the materials used for fine filtration.
    Also never EVER drill towards your hand !! Using a different bottle that's more rigid would be a good idea as well.

    Joey the videos you make is like me going to home depot. Sometimes you don't know what you really need or you remember something you need just by shopping around. You are that guy, I come to visit your channel just to see was up, and I go oh yea I can definitely use that to make my aquarium hobby better.
    You are very loyal to the hobby man and I enjoy very much watching your videos. You felt like you took responsibility with innocence and I appreciate you showing us how it was being used the wrong way especially when you have mentioned about how the prices are sky rocketing and sellers taking advantage. You always advise us to make use of things at it's highest capacity and you make the most creative and technical videos on the fish hobby. Very polished and high class. I started watching your live videos and I like the freelance type videos as well. You get to be yourself and on youtube, you get to TOP it off in the youtube hobby. I appreciate that Joey.
    And yes, it was you that I got influenced by to make a filter like that haha, and it is you again to re-consider my media although it does look kool and has been running well for a few months now, I may have to transfer the k1 media to make the most of them in a container/tank. I always thought they needed space to swing around, this video proves that point. Thanks!!!! I have a solid yr in the aquarium hobby and always looked ways to enjoy it for me, my family, more importantly for the fish. I am big on DIY projects, some things work, some things aren't going to work, just depends. looking forward to more videos!!

      lorenmansfield...Don't worry about having to use drills. I have a metal meat skewer...I heat the end of it in the gas (cooker) and when it's hot simply push it through the plastic bottle. The hole will be quite small so you can wiggle it around a bit....well, that's what I did and have a great filter. Make sure there are no bits of plastic sticking out to damage fish. Instead of clear plastic I use empty, washed out Horlicks "bottles" (take label off) and being white they look nice in the tank.

    • @sooyoungie5137
      @sooyoungie5137 Před 7 lety +8

      5 gallons isn't much at all. I recommend starting out with a 10 gallon, because it's easier to cycle and you can actually own a significant amount fish. In a 5 gallon, you could probably own a betta since it's a good beginner fish, BUT only one. I have a rule of thumb, 1 inch of fish = one gallon. (This ONLY applies to the adult size of fish.) You could start out a shrimp tank, but I recommend doing a lot of research. Don't do any other kinds of invertibrae cause they easily dirty the tank.

    Great ideas and content. I'll be using one of these on my little 2 1/2 guppy fry tank. I think it will be perfect for the job. Of course I'll be using the lava rock seeing as how I have a bunch left over from my vivarium build.

      That isn't how that works. The labyrinth organ that they use to breath air is supplementary. They still use their gills plenty passively and that isn't something that can be turned off. They may be more resilient, but they are not immune to dirty water and it absolutely needs to be filtered.

    Serious question.. How is either of these better than a large sponge? It seems that a sponge that takes up as much tank space as the 1 litre bottle will have as much or more surface area. Why build this when for the same price as lava rock you can buy a sponge?

    • @TheBondsJamesBonds
      @TheBondsJamesBonds Před 6 lety +2

      I realize this old but the reason is surface area. You look at the lava rock and it seems to take up the same amount of space. However, it is so porous that it actually has many times the surface area of a sponge. The holes are just very very small.

    • @LongNguyen-pv9sm
      @LongNguyen-pv9sm Před 6 lety

      Its all about surface area, if the sponge have big enough surface area with enough water flowing through it, perfect, but sometime it doesnt work that well
