I don't even have fish. I just like watching your videos.
Same here 😂 but this might help me if I will have one soon.
TheNukedNacho me too
TheNukedNacho c'mon man, get a fish tank ! you will fall in love with the hobby, and there is so many cool fish you won't regret it ✌
or shrimp :)
not aquarium shrimp... plus you won't touch them
When it comes to fishkeeping and diy (two of things i love so much) there hasn't been a single resource more valuable to me than your channel. thanks so much!
Made the first one and attached it to my filtration system . Had some brown murkey looking water in my koi tank within an hour it was crystal clear and I had some happy fish again
Same with me I did that about a year ago
Will keep this in mind for my koi with an ultimately undersized filter.
Where did you get the pump and attachment?
@@bailie30 Can get them off amazon and whatnot. I found a $13 sunsun jvp pump rated for 158gph after a bit of searching, and its worked great for my 33 gallon.
Just find something with a gph rating that is appropriate for your tank.
@@MehHalfhearted cheers for the recommendation.
It's call the wave maker right?
I ebay search for sunsun jvp and I got the 101 as result.
I built a bottle filter a while back and was too broke to buy the fluidized media so I used some ceramic Biomax type media I already had thinking that they should work just as well. Glad my lack of funds worked out for me! :D
Natascha Perkins- this is my first time here on this channel, and I'm a bit lost, I googled ceramic biomax and found this Aqua Clear 30 filter insert? This is new to me, and the guy is it Joe, goes by so fast that I could not pick up what he was referring too, other than the "ceramic" and I was totally lost...can you digest this for me please??? I have a 10 gallon tank and use the charcoal filter from Aqueon... I was looking for vacuum system that runs on battery, I'm tired of the siphon hand one, that I have the hardest time to run...it sounds like this is better? Or is this in conjunction with the traditional set up??
@@Twins0302 Have you figured it out yet? The ceramic rings are better because they don't need replacing, and it does not filter out nutrients for plants
5:24 before this time put your headphones on and make sure to put full volume so you hear this nice and clear
5:18 -- LMAO I had to put my blast goggles on! That volume change woke me UP!! 😂
Setting up another new tank and still referring to your filter playlist for cheapo for filter needs. Keep up the good work man!
Watched 5 videos regarding setting up an aquarium filter and this is the only one that i understand. You're an angel.
I have to let you know that you're a life saver man! I watched your video yesterday and then i was able to go home and make the first filter you talked about out of extra parts i had laying around and it worked perfectly! My little 16g nano is ALOT cleaner now.
I have to say, congratulations on over 200,000 subscribers you're doing a good job thank you.
Monetize.
That is the most helpful advice I have ever been given for multiple tanks. Love you so much.
This is one of my top 5 favorite videos! I learn by doing, so as I build this filters I'm connecting the dots in a meaningful and useful way. Thank you so much for teaching in this format.
I just purchased a aquarium. Watching your videos. You MOTIVATED me 😍😍😍
Congrats on 200k Joey
Thanks Steve!
And a year later he's at almost 3/4 of a million.
And now, 930k+ Subs.

Thanks for the update. This is how we learn, by doing something, then doing further research and trying something else. And you are wise enough to show the better method.
I love the honesty , its a shame that rising popularity can lead to missuse of filtration , Thank you for the vid joey!
Nice filters for small tanks. Twenty five years ago when I was dating my wife I gave her a fifty five gallon aquarium with a custom stand and top that I had built. Set it up with rocks and gravel, large plastic plants and several dozen african cichilds. Since she was new to fish keeping I ordered two pond sponge filters that were round and about the size of a small coffee can. Added a one inch pvc riser and topped with a power head. I placed one at each end of the tank and told her to rinse one out each week in old tank water, alternating each week. That tank ran for years with nothing more than water changes and washing filters. The fish grew large and thrived.

Hello, I've been reading your book recently. I'm confused over what my type of filter is. It's an efx200 from Maidenhead aquatics. I'm confused because you have to fill it up with water before you start it, so to me it seems like it might be a submerged one. But then the water is also continuously flowing through it, so it fits the criteria for the emerged, and it could also be fluidised, because the flow of water surely knocks the filter media around. I might be thinking too much into this but I would appreciate if you could tell me what the best media would be to use in place of the carbon.
you have a canister type filter
The king of DIY
The king of DIY what powerhead do you use? thanks
Might want to pin this comment, Joey. So that it's up at the top and everyone can see it.
RIP Headphone users 5:24
Lol u saved me
My ears are bleeding.
Not even wearing headphones but now I know to lower the volume
Lol
From now on---always read comments first. Lesson learned. lol
Your videos are awesome. Filters and lights have always kept me from going bigger because of the cost. Now I know how to save a ton and understand more about filters. This has to be one of the best CZcams Channels ever. Thanks so much
Love your DIY videos and the fact that you explain WHY people should use stuff the right way, so many youtubers are sponsored by companys and dont tell us WHY their metods is the best, keep up the great work and many thanks from Sweden =)
Keep in mind that some of the fibers can get sucked up into the impeller of the power head .I would advise putting something like a dish scrubbing pad in-between the pump and the materials used for fine filtration.
Also never EVER drill towards your hand !! Using a different bottle that's more rigid would be a good idea as well.
Joey the videos you make is like me going to home depot. Sometimes you don't know what you really need or you remember something you need just by shopping around. You are that guy, I come to visit your channel just to see was up, and I go oh yea I can definitely use that to make my aquarium hobby better.
You are very loyal to the hobby man and I enjoy very much watching your videos. You felt like you took responsibility with innocence and I appreciate you showing us how it was being used the wrong way especially when you have mentioned about how the prices are sky rocketing and sellers taking advantage. You always advise us to make use of things at it's highest capacity and you make the most creative and technical videos on the fish hobby. Very polished and high class. I started watching your live videos and I like the freelance type videos as well. You get to be yourself and on youtube, you get to TOP it off in the youtube hobby. I appreciate that Joey.
And yes, it was you that I got influenced by to make a filter like that haha, and it is you again to re-consider my media although it does look kool and has been running well for a few months now, I may have to transfer the k1 media to make the most of them in a container/tank. I always thought they needed space to swing around, this video proves that point. Thanks!!!! I have a solid yr in the aquarium hobby and always looked ways to enjoy it for me, my family, more importantly for the fish. I am big on DIY projects, some things work, some things aren't going to work, just depends. looking forward to more videos!!
Thank you for the kind words brother! Always encouraging to get feed back like this.
+The king of DIY anytime mah man! well deserved.
Thanks for the honesty regarding fluidized filters.
I have to say the concept of a water bottle gave me bigger ideas, the fact you explain how they all work at the simplest breakdown with out all the scientifically fact makes this one of the best filter understand video on youtube , i just subscribed
good, honest video. I can't understand the pricing on media, it's crazy.... I have several 75-100g tanks in my tilapia aquaponic system, and that lovely, cheap, lava rock....
Keep the great content coming !
2019. And I'm watching this. Lol. this vid is very helpful for beginners
First video of yours that I have watched and immediately subscribed to your channel. You keep it simple and don't go on and on about things, giving a perfect short explanation.
Best DIY filter idea ever!! Simple to make and simple to maintain, plus easy to hide behind driftwood or/and plants if you don’t like the appearance of it. Pure genius.
I love the Science of the hobby. Straightforward information like this is invaluable to the success of Fish keepers trying DIY. Thank you for what you do. Every tank I have ( only 3) has something that I I have learned from you.
2019. And this is still amazingly useful
Thank you for uploading this video! I modified my NatGeo filter(essentially a pump) to work with a water bottle and it worked like a charm! I recently started a 46 gallon aquarium with some clay substrate. It clouded up so bad it looked like Mars. This custom filter has made things so much better in a matter of hours. Thanks again!
I stumbled across this video while searching for help with my cloudy/murky tank. I've never seen your videos before but today I watched this one. I went home and cut open a water bottle and stuffed it with the fluffy filling like you had on here. within 20 minutes I could see a HUGE difference in my tank. before I couldn't even hardly see my down spout for my filter system, now I can see the electric cord the the pump for the filter system. there has been a 80% difference already in this short amount of time. thank you so much for this video. I think this new tank just might make it!!
I feel like I just got yelled out, and I didn't even build a fluidized filter. Either way, I still feel guilty.
Lmao I was thinking the same thing
Haha I feel you
Chris Bell same
I feel like I just got scolded by my dad and I'm old enough to be his sister. I can imagine how his kids must feel when he scolds them. XD
LOL!
Well, looks like I'll be going with lava rock for my next filter! Great video!
I kno this video is old. But u covered so many things I was seeking the answers to in this video I had to comment. When u mentioned the lava rock.... especially the bbq lava rock nd crushing it up....i heart did an extra beat. Good job
Hey man, you are a genius.
Tried both the plastic bottle filter ideas and it worked instantly and cleared my problem completely in 10 minutes.
Respect from the UK
The Skimmer works also great in my pool. I used an 1000l/h power head and coarse filter foam. Thanks for the idea.
glad you called the K1 people out, at least you're not a sellout, you sir, gotcha a sub
love your idea for a surface skimmer. cant believe I hadn't thought of it before.
Thanks for explaining the logic for the ceramic filter.Makes much more sense.
Deam Joey, great work spreding the truth, you do a fantastik job making thes videos!
a fintastic job 😎
Man, Joey is fired up!
Joey who thinks he is better than everyone else, and talks down to everyone.

Awesome! I'm going to try this right now. Thanks for easy directions. I'll be watching ur videos more often.. enjoy your night
I think I need help in my 50 gallon aquarium. Love watching your videos brother. Cheers
I was really enjoying this very informative video until I had a panic attack about drill bits at 5:18
lorenmansfield...Don't worry about having to use drills. I have a metal meat skewer...I heat the end of it in the gas (cooker) and when it's hot simply push it through the plastic bottle. The hole will be quite small so you can wiggle it around a bit....well, that's what I did and have a great filter. Make sure there are no bits of plastic sticking out to damage fish. Instead of clear plastic I use empty, washed out Horlicks "bottles" (take label off) and being white they look nice in the tank.
I got nervous while watch him use that drill .
joey great info your the man keep it going
You have changed alot in 4 years. Love it!
This is why I went with your DIY trickle filter with the 5 gallon buckets, but I modified that to fit more media and water. Really hope to get some feed back from you on my 300 gallon setup. I will show the filter prob next week once I have it all plumbed in.
Good video and great information even if this video may piss off some people
I'll admit when I saw you got goldfish I was like "wtf" but listening to you put things into perspective gave me a change of heart. OK you've made your point... now let's get some discus in that tank!!! Jk😂
thanks for sharing your knowledge. I made one of your filter DIY and it came out great.
I do like the last one. Product and projects change, good job.🇨🇦
hell yah Joey I knew those little k1 filters were almost pointless, I got 50 lbs of lava rock at my local hardware store for $2!!! the bag was ripped so they didn't want it anymore! awesome video dude

You just answered my question - so lava rocks for gas grills are the same as what you can use in fish filter ?
Yeah, more or less.
this guy probably has more recycled water bottles than the whole city he lives in ahahahah
i love how real you got telling people the truth
i have a native species fish tank and never looked into k-1 just cause the ceramic rings was the only i could find and knew better
but you got me into fish hobby ty man keep up the good work
This video has been so helpful you are the best for making filters 🐟🐡🐠
I told my mom, I want a fish...
And a fish tank that is 1 foot wide, 2 foot long, and one foot tall.
Very very specific, I want a filter feeder, a bottom feeder and a cleaning shrimp, as well as a colorful fish for a freshwater tank.
She answered: ... what...
Rofl
I don't know where to ask this. I haven't seen it after looking through your videos... Have you done a DIY UV sterilizer? and, what I'm interested in, an inline one?
I used to watch these all the time a couple years ago, didn't know it was the same guy and I started watching him again earlier this year
This is amazing. I just got a Aquadecor add with joey in the beginning. Wow that timing tho
congrats on 200000 subs....more to come
You know it!
And to think I was being a tight wad when I built my little filter. I used ceramic media because I had it laying around. GO Tightwads!
Great video Joey as always
thanks for the info joey, ive been using k1 on my grow out tank, time to switch to ceramic rings/bio medias.
Brilliant Joey !
diy roler mat filter would be great
Definitely helps! You can heat up nails using candle to in making those holes. Thank youu for all of your DIYs ☺️
Thanks. your explanation cleared this up for me. great video.
congratulations on 200k subscribers great...
Thanks!
hahaha

954K in 2018!
What size of this tank will the ceramic filter work on?
Wow...thanks for the info Joey 👍. Even though I ordered 2L of K1 just last week I am still happy I haven't implemented it yet. I will find a different use for my Fluidized Bed Filter 😁
Glad I saw this before I made one, let alone spent $ I don't have on overpriced product. Thank you for this and all your informative videos!
Hello there. Can you please make a video or a series of videos for the absolute beginner like me? For example, what fish can a beginner keep or how to set up a small (5 gallon) tank etc. I would appreciate very much if you did that sort of thing. Thanks in advance.
5 gallons isn't much at all. I recommend starting out with a 10 gallon, because it's easier to cycle and you can actually own a significant amount fish. In a 5 gallon, you could probably own a betta since it's a good beginner fish, BUT only one. I have a rule of thumb, 1 inch of fish = one gallon. (This ONLY applies to the adult size of fish.) You could start out a shrimp tank, but I recommend doing a lot of research. Don't do any other kinds of invertibrae cause they easily dirty the tank.
+j Al that is soo not true i had 2 platy in 5 gallon for year it was planted and i anint no expert
+j Al that is soo not true i had 2 platy in 5 gallon for year it was planted and i anint no expert

Any 2019 viewers?
Yeah
F!sh hobbyist yeet
Here
Yup
yeah not for fish for my plants
definitely going to give the last one a shot! thinking I need more filtration in my tank
Oh... brilliant skimmer and polisher!!! 😀
what is the powerhead he uses
What witchcraft did you employ to make such a perfectly sized hole in the sponge filter??
Nice video. I was exploring the option of getting a Ziss filter. Admittedly I was more in it for the looks in my tank. Thought the filter media would do more tho. Thanks for the video.
Thx Joey perfect timing I was just about to buy some!!!
You never explained why k1 media is good when using it different
Does lava rock help with ammonia?
Meek H ask google
Great ideas and content. I'll be using one of these on my little 2 1/2 guppy fry tank. I think it will be perfect for the job. Of course I'll be using the lava rock seeing as how I have a bunch left over from my vivarium build.
You are a rockstar my friend. The world needs more people like you.
2019 anyone?
2019?
Do not worry about give aways Joey, me and many others watch everything you produce and never once think about give aways! Love your stuff and have the book.
And people torture bettas because filters are "too expensive". :(
Bettas can breath above water, all you gotta do is provide them with soft water and your probably good to go.
@@sef2473 and a heater,a minimum of 2.5 gallons and tons of live plants. Filters are not just for oxigenating water, they clean it from debris, and good bacteria live in the media. Do you even own fish?
@@sef2473
That isn't how that works. The labyrinth organ that they use to breath air is supplementary. They still use their gills plenty passively and that isn't something that can be turned off. They may be more resilient, but they are not immune to dirty water and it absolutely needs to be filtered.
Just use filtered water from drinking water filtering machine. Replace every 3 days
@@harryharold1049 … *sigh* They were talking about you.
Whos here in 2019?
Almost 2020🐟🐌🐡🦐🐠 Wow!
this is very helpful ....i was about to do the same fluidized filter with a 1.5l bottle. thank you very much
this video gave me the idea of using an air rock and a water bottle with lava rock... and now I have the DIY bug... My African dwarf frog actually plays in the bubbles... I had a filter and a volcano with air rock in it already but wanted a bit more biofilter... Your videos are helping my PTSD and I wanted to thank you for having a helping hand helping me find my calm.
2019
Serious question.. How is either of these better than a large sponge? It seems that a sponge that takes up as much tank space as the 1 litre bottle will have as much or more surface area. Why build this when for the same price as lava rock you can buy a sponge?
I realize this old but the reason is surface area. You look at the lava rock and it seems to take up the same amount of space. However, it is so porous that it actually has many times the surface area of a sponge. The holes are just very very small.
Its all about surface area, if the sponge have big enough surface area with enough water flowing through it, perfect, but sometime it doesnt work that well
The yelling wanted me to skip this video but I´m glad I did´nt.
I like your straightforward way of speaking, that you´re getting to the very point and explain everything in detail. That´s what I´m missing in lots of videos. Very helpful, thanks.
Hi your the best CZcams in the universe I love your vids keep up the amazing work buddy
can just polyester media create the beneficial bacteria for the aquarium ?? im not understand the mechanical, biological and chemical filter well😱..please, can u tell me🙏
Izzudin naim Azis you can but don't rinse with tap water and depended on your tank size
ok. then for aquarium cycle..do i should put the Live bacteria product to start the bacteria colonize ? or the bacteria can grow itself ?
Ohh great. Can i see the picture of it ?
Izzudin naim Azis you don't need to I recommend using actually bio media instead of only poly fil because if you w cleans you will lose bacteria but yes and add some fish food give 2 week boom done
so, i don't need to use the live bacteria from the product sell in the market insteed of using Bio media?
How does it compare to the fluidized sand filter though?
yup i wouldn't mind an answer to that one
I made a video already talking about that. czcams.com/video/L8MzUYnxXJ8/video.html
Thanks Joey! My whole 55gallon cichlid tank even the stand has ideas from your videos! When I have some money I dont spend on my fish, I plan on supporting you by buying your book! Thanks for everything! :)
Thank you Owen!
imgur.com/a/YlzAo Thanks!
Also I had extra plastic gutter left over from the light, I siliconed two pieces together with some plastic cutting board on the bottom. Cut some teeth, and holes for suction cups. Makes a great overflow Filter!
Right on thanks bro I'll be looking forward to it keep up the good work Joey
