- After watching DIY Filter Aquarium video you will learn how to build an aquarium filter at home using a plastic container, vinyl tubing and aquarium submersible pump. It is like a canister filter with DIY inlet and outlet tube and completely water sealed so there is no risk of leaking. DIY filter aquarium was built in few hours, however, adequate amount of time was given for silicone to be fully cured before testing it on my No filter betta aquarium.
A plastic food container is used to build this diy aquarium filter. Clear vinyl tubing 10 mm is used for water flow from fish tank to filter and filter to fish tank. Elbow connectors are used to build home made inlet and outlet tubes. A vinyl joiner for 10 mm vinyl tubing is used as main source of connection. Submersible aquarium pump is connected to the inside of the diy filter and wire is run through the lid. I have joined the wires following safe basic technique. Coarse foam and fine foam has been used as mechanical filter media and Zeolite bio media is used to grow beneficial bacteria colonies.
Zeolite: It has a large surface area with good adsorption, ion exchange capacity and chemical stability. Zeolite is a kind of volcanic eruption crystal which not only can remove turbidity but can also help in removing smell of the water. It is widely used in water filtration and plays an important role in controlling heavy metals in water such as chrome, cadmium, nickel, zinc etc.,
Material Used In DIY Filter Aquarium:
Plastic Food Container
Clear Vinyl tubing
Vinyl Joiner
Elbow Connectors
Zeolite Bio Media
Coarse and Fine Foam
Submersible Pump
Initially, the filter will only pick up pieces of debris and feces in the tank. But over time it will start building beneficial bacteria colonies. However, by adding beneficial bacteria this process can be speed up. You will also notice some air bubbles pushed out in the tank, after running the aquarium filter for few minutes, air bubbles will disappear. With adjustable powerhead, you can change the speed around to determine the optimum water flow speed. It is highly recommended to regularly check your aquarium filter to make sure that it is working fine without any leakages.

Thanks Marco, you too mate
Need this.
Works a treat mate
I just subscribed, so impressed by what you do… Keep up the good work !!!
You should look into proper electrical connection, soldering, crimping, or wire nuts, I wouldn't trust twist and tape especially for mains voltage.
Agree Justin, something i would explore in future to make it more safer. Appreciate your comment
I admire how industrious you are. Great watch. Thank you.
Thank you Tariq for your kind words.
I like how he’s pretty straight forward about everything.
Cheers Fateen, glad you like the video
I am delighted to see your DIY works! You have made a fantastic inexpensive and functional external filter. Precision and perfection in your work.
Thank you Marco, really appreciate it mate.
I do agree. 👌🏼
Great construction and with improvements anyone can start this as the initial idea. Good work👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
One of the best video on making aquarium filter at home.
Thank you
Hello! A very useful video. Excellent external filter, affordable material and inexpensive. The main desire and hands 👍
Extremely useful video man. Thank you. I can take this idea, and make a much bigger one for my 40 gallon breeder tank.
You are most welcome mate and wish you best of luck.
The most good looking DIY filter i ever saw in this platform
Good job I would definetely try this
Dont listen to negative comments about leaking and stuff..
U made everything right they propably dont.
Thanks Adam, it is very kind of you. As long as the container is air tight there won't be any issue with the filter. Lock n lock is a good brand. Wish you best of luck.
Great job. Thanks and greetings from Argentina.
Thanks heaps Paul, really appreciate it
Wow. That tank is awesome !
Thanks Evan, hairgrass has almost covered the entire tank.
Love your video mate. Thanks for showing us and is definitely cheaper than an actual canister filter bud. Thanks
Appreciate it mate, easy to build any size filter with the required capacity for the tank. Have a good one
@@Fishaholic On top of that, the bigger the size you make, the cheaper it gets. . Loving ur vids mate. Keep making them nd see one day ir channel will skyrocket 👍👍

Awesome external canister filter using power head 👍
Thanks 👍, appreciate it Raju
this is very informative
this is very interesting
i do love and enjoy this
thanks and God bless
Thank you heaps
I've been trying to figure out a better and more compact filtration system for my one gallon birthing tank. I bought a triangular top fin and the pump is humungous for such a small tank. This is PERFECT and not nearly as ugly! Thank you!
Cheers mate, I have built another filter similar to this one but looks bit neat. Swivel attachments for both inlet and outlet. Supplies were bought from Bunnings warehouse. Video is uploaded if you want to have a look at it. Appreciate your comment and have a good one.
Really nice, thank you!
Thank you
Muito bom!!! Fantástico!!!

Spektakuler 👍👍 👍♥️
Great build
Thanks again mate
Fantastic ❤
Nice canister filter concept
Appreciate it mate
Thanks for the video wanted to do something like this for my 5 gallon. Something different
Appreciate it narwhal, it would do an amazing job in filtering 5 gallon tank.
Glad i found this mate, gonna try it absolutely
Thank you Fajar, buy air lock container so there are no concerns of any type of leakage.
@@Fishaholic do we need an air faucet to throw away the air in case there's any air that stuck inside?
Don't think it will be required Fajar. As you can see in my video there was quite a bit air in the filter in the start but after running it for few minutes it all cleared up.
@@Fishaholic oh ok mate, thank you for your time. Appreciate that
I enjoyed everything about this video😊
Subscribed👊
Please keep it up
Thank you Azrael, appreciate your positive feedback.
amazing video. thumbs up!
Thank you Zeeshan, appreciate your support as always
Excelente trabajo amigo, un aporte, si la entrada del agua al acuario la dejas tipo "cascada" se mejora también la oxigenación.
Muy bueno!!!!
Thank you for the feedback and have a nice weekend
Really appreciate your effort of making this really nice video
Thanks A Lot
Thanks mate, so nice of you and appreciate your kind words
Buen video gracias por compartir

Thanks Tommy, really appreciate it.
Very specific work👍
Thank you Chetan, its very kind of you
Awesome brother
Thank you mate, have a nice weekend
Really cool.
Thank you heaps mate
Having recently built one like this I cannot stress the point enough that you need to test the seal on the container before you get to the point everything is assebled.
Also I put the pump on the bottom to not make it top heavy, and so media you change often is on top. Zeolite, carbon, fine filter, floss from bottom to top.
Nothing like some D.I.Y. !! Nice job
Thanks heaps
So cool!!!
Thanks mate, have a good weekend
good job thanks for the video, tell me do i need an air pum or the filter is enouth for oxygene
Surprenant et efficace
Thank you for your feedback
Top video will try keep up with your videos just away for 2days but will keep eyes open injoy your weekend
Thanks! You too!
can we use this process for 4 feet tank
You certianly can, depends on type and size of fish you have. My 4 feet planted aquarium with 30 plus tropical fish is currently running on an internal filter with less bio capacity than this diy filter.
You know you are a good fish owner if you do everthing properly for your fish. 👍🏼
Your Betta is adorable and he is in a good place that's for sure.
I hope some Karens are watching your video. Maybe they will stop putting fish in the size of your container filter.
Thank you for sharing this video.
How could I forget to subscribe?! 🤦🏻♀️😅
Thank you, I have moved betta fish to my 4 feet planted community tank. He is absolutely loving his tank mates. Bought a female betta last week and they are slowly interacting with each other.
@@Fishaholic I saw him in that tank when I was watching your internal filter 2 days ago. 🙈
I think that he likes his new tank.
Wonderful video
Thank you heaps
This is awesome brother. I liked the way you think.
But can you do a diy which is having pump at the bottom most, above that with a separator media and above that again with a separator filter loss and sponge.
Trust me this will be awesome even for physics, but thinking about ammonia trapping your idea is way better.
Big fan.
Good information 👍😍😍😍
And
Also great video mate 👍🤩🤩😍
Thanks mate, really appreciate it
Nice filter greathings
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice vidio very use full
Thanks mate, appreciate your comment
Wow great
Thank you heaps
Nice simple
Thank you friend
wow really amazing bro.
Appreciate it mate
Best video bro ❤
Thank you
...next time, WASH all items BEFORE placing them in the filter. That way the residue will not be ejected into the water like a white cloud of smoke. That's Aquarium pump 101.
Copy that. Thank you for valuable advise
Amazing
Thank you heaps
Very good:)
Thank you heaps
DIY Filter Aquarium 👍👍💯💯🤝🤝
Thank you heaps
Will cost more than buying one, but definitely worth watching ❤️
Appreciate your feedback mate, have a nice weekend
This literally would cost half the price 🤦♂️
Not where I live. This is better than a store bought one anyway.
Thanks for the video I'm thinking to make this filter good luck on your youtube career
Thanks Heinrich, appreciate your comment. Let me know how you go and if I could be of any more help.
@@Fishaholic The filter is running fine I did almost exactly the same as you!
Glad to hear Heinrich, happy fish keeping
Super👍👍👍
Thank you heaps
🆒Cool!!
Thanks heaps
great idea but you should have return pump at the bottom of the container that way it passes through all of your media. also you should put the return and intake at diffrent sides of the tank that way its more of a water turn around.
Thank you Bee, intake and outlet on opposite end would have definitely made a big difference. The intake is connected to another tube which pushes the water all the way down and then it travels through buomedia before goes back in the tank. Appreciate your time watching video. Have a good one
Sensacional 👏
Thank you Christian, appreciate it
Put the filter lower than the aquarium's water level, then the flow into the filter will be faster but make sure your pump is able to return the water at that lowered height. Right now you can see the return of water to the filter is very slow because of low siphon effect.
Very nice video... avocado was also great idea.. hybrid tank..two comments...inlet and outlet should be at farthest place...outlet top corner right....inlet bottom corner left...to guarante best circulation...then if you pierce the tube for balloon holder I didn't see they were sealed...because water would be leaked...on the whole thx...big like
Hi Hamid, agree on both points that you have mentioned in your comment. Since it is a 20L tank and plants are fully established thats why I didn't care too much about the efficiency of the canister filter. But for a larger tank, this is something I can not ignore. Thank you
Hadir menyapa sobat salam silaturahmi 🙏
Wooow, this Idea was so great! Congratulations mate! 👏👏👏
One question, for this kind of filter keep working well, he need to be located on the side of the tank or can be below the tank?
Thanks
It can be placed anywhere you would like but will depend on the pump used in the filter. I have had mine on the side of the tank due to the capacity of water pump and the maximum height it could lift the water.
Nice
Thank you
cool bro very nice bro
Thank you Santosh, have a nice weekend.
good Work Greetings from Cuba
Hi Ronny, appreciate it mate.
👍👍👍
Thank you
I love it. I was going to use a plastic soda bottle with filter media but this is way better.Could the inlet and outlet be on different sides of the tank? Gonna steal this idea. Thanks
Hi William, inlet and outlet should be ideally at the opposite end. Since it is a small tank so it won't make much difference as 200lph filter for 20l tank would be more than enough filtration.
this is amazing! would you say this is considerably quiet, or is that dependent on the submersible pump used?
Hi Kristy, filter is extremely quiet and uses a submersible pump to operate. Similar to a canister filter. Appreciate your comment
@@Fishaholic many thanks! This would be a really fun experiment! :)
Very nice work! Could you please tell me what's the pump's liter/hour efficieny? Thanks!
Hi Vlad, pump is 200 liter per hour.
Very nice. So before starting for the first time you filled the external filter with water too right?
Hi mate, appreciate your time watching this video. Yea filter was filled with water till the top before powering ON.
Genial
Thank you, appreciate your time mate
did you never hear about heat shrink for your electrical wire work looks just ten times better
Good build. Why put the pump at the top since it appears submersible, not criticizing just wondering? The suction should have a screen or foam around it to keep the fish from getting injured, I've had that happen. I'm going to order some of those balls and try them out.
its almost same with mine, but i doesn use anytube and doesn need close the jar, only negative side was u need put filter at same level with your tank :D
Appreciate you sharing your experience Tikus, thank you
Hey just created this filter... thanks for the great video, one question though! How do i create suction to take the water out of the aquarium?? My container may not be airtight! Also then do i need to attach another pump to the cannister inlet pipe that comes out of the awuarium, to create the suction?
Hi Arka, I filled the filter with aquarium water and after turning on the power, suction was created automatically. If it is not working for you then you could always siphon the water or use your mouth to suck water out of the outlet. Once water starts coming out then turn on the power. Let me know how you go
bien joué
Good joob!)
Thank you Denis
Wow nice movie im stay ;)
Thank you, appreciate your comment
4:12 You loves security :-)
Well done mate,
Did you seal the container lid with silicone as well ?
Cheers bud, I didn't use any silicone on the lid as it is a leak proof food storage container. Lid mechanism is similar to a canister filter.
Use inlet and outlet at opposite direction for better filtration
Link for the pump ?
In and out tubes should be on opposite sides of the tank. Put the zeolite in a bag without the zip - the metal may be toxic.
Will you please share that where did u get those plastic holders for the polycarbonate sheet which you attached on four corners of the aquarium.
Hi, I didn't buy them separately, they came with the tank
