    It's July 2024 and at Total Wine here in Minnesota. The Yamazaki and Hakushu are $200 a bottle, and the Hibiki is $100. I was able to grab a bottle of Yamazki 12 for $180 and Hibiki for $75, but that was last year prices.

    All that I can fin locally is Yamazaki and Hibiki. Yamazaki 12 is a staple on my bar. I have enough bottle to make it through the shortage. Would love to see a Drinkthrough for Old Forester. Most of their whiskeys are available across the country and there is enough variety to make it a good show.

    I have this full lineup. I picked up two bottles of Chita back in summer while traveling. I hated it at first but it opens up a lot and gets much better. Still very weird but the grain is very dominant. I don’t recommend unless you’re able to get it for a rational price.

  • @markfrederick4082
    @markfrederick4082 Před 3 lety +1

    Chita is a grain-only distillery with massive continuous distillation. That is the only one of the whiskies you have here that is widely available here in Japan. Definitely aimed for highball consumption. Amazing how most of those are easier to find in the US than Japan. Hakushu 12 is not sold here anymore. Toki never was. Yamazaki 12 will cost $175 on the secondary market--impossible to find at MSRP.

    You bourbon guys make me smile with your Scotch confusion, Yamazaki is more like a Speyside (sweet smooth and sherried) Hakushu is more in the Islay style with smoke and peat. Glenmorangie has no smoke at all Dutch ! It is the most Speyside of Scotches very smooth and sweet. Toki is straight up a mixing whisky young harsh and not for sipping (like Haig Clubman the David Beckham marketed rough stuff). Suntory have tried for decades to ape the Scotch styles and "outscotch" them. You are lucky to still get the 12s there we only get the NAS stuff now and having compared the Yamazaki 12 is levels above the Distillers Reserve we get now. Chita is grain whisky which was traditionally used to balance malts in blending, Not sure why anyone would drink it neat it is rough ! Hibiki is my favourite as I always get all 3 distillery flavours on the palate, it is rdiculously overpriced though and again the Hibiki 12 was superior to the NAS Harmony

    • @jorgotto3662
      @jorgotto3662 Před 3 lety

      Confusion? Not sure what they said that was technically wrong. Glenmorangie was much more peated in the distant past, and continues to have light peat today. The phenols are low for sure but it's there. Agree with you that Toki is a waste of money IMO considering you're getting nothing other than the Suntory name. Plenty of other scotch or scotch adjacent brands do a better mixing job. As for using terms like Speyside to describe "sweet" and "non-peat" is falling out of favor considering, Cragganmore, BenRiach, etc but I get what you're trying to say.

    • @Thetache
      @Thetache Před 3 lety

      @@jorgotto3662 To put Glenmorangie in comparison with Hakushu will confuse the uninitiated it is much more akin to Yamazaki, and to say something used to be different is a pointless point, Glenmorangie NOW is a sweet whisky not a smoky whisky and would sit perfectly in the Speyside style lineup.

    • @steveno7058
      @steveno7058 Před 3 lety

      Hakushu is NOTHING like heavily peated Islay Scotch. Not even close. It’s more like a peated Speyside or Highland. Islay peat has a distinct medicinal and marine profile. Nothing like Hakushu.
