    Thank you, Chuck, for saying out loud how, in our society, we seem to be normalizing obesity. Making it OK when it's not. It's not healthy and never will be. Sure, you might get away with being that way when you're younger, but the health problems will catch up to you. I'm a witness.

      Absolutely I’m obese per numbers but when I look around more than half of them are obese, so it helps me normalize my size as not so big. I need to remember to eat healthy and make good choices. Thanks to PCRM.

    I wish my dr would have been honest with me, even if it met hurting my feelings. I was over 350 by 24. I'm so thankful I've found all these great resources and got my life back.

      Wow. That's neglectful. At 24 you should have been living life instead of dealing with health issues that come with being overweight. I'd find a different doctor who cares about your life.

    thanks Chuck, you make an incredibly important point regarding normalizing obesity. the word itself carries judgement about a person’s appearance. but with smoking, we don’t tell people to quit because it makes their teeth yellow. people need to quit smoking because of the horrific health outcomes that are associated with it. we need to approach processed foods and animal products in the same way - there are serious health outcomes associated with their consumption.

    Learning about and appreciating my body, how my organs work for me to maintain my health every moment of every day really helped me make the best choices. How often my heart beats, the 500 functions of the liver, etc. I stopped eating junk (French fries) when I found out how hard my body had to work. Stumbled onto the fantastic world of the gut microbiome “sealed the deal”. I treat my body like miracle it is. Treats are foods that nourish. I don’t even crave junk or alcohol.

    It comes down to like what Dillon says on Well Your World, and that is that you must truly 'see' that there is food that is " poison", and food that is not poison. Then you just can't be tempted at all. 👍

    Yes Chuck! I agree! It’s “body positivity” to the extreme. I think you can be positive with where you are and not speak bad about yourself, but also realize “hey. I’m 500lbs. That’s not healthy. I’m not ugly. I’m not gross. But I need to get healthy”. I’ve seen where people who are really obese start to workout, and people come after them with “you’re not being self loving!” Or “that’s not body positivity! Stay the way you are!” Which is wild! It’s not about a certain look or weight. It’s about health. 200lbs healthy is better than 120lbs unhealthy.

    Hmm, I wonder if a doctor would ever suggest to an alcoholic or drug addict that it is okay to indulge occasionally? I think not. So please don’t suggest to food addicts that it is okay to indulge their cravings occasionally. Why would there ever be a good time to eat the foods (i.e. fat, processed food, salt, sugar, etc.) that caused comorbidities, food addiction, obesity, and poor health? In my opinion, it’s these mixed messages from doctors, most of the food industry, and others that contribute to the problem. We have to stop playing word games with peoples health. This is exactly why some people continue to struggle to lose weight. Because, when they eat the same obesity causing foods even occasionally, they risk triggering their appetites, damaging their gut bacteria, confusing their fat cell hormones, increasing inflammation in their bodies, and so on. Which sabotages their weight loss efforts. A healthy lifestyle for me (and research shows for most humans) consists of a whole food plant-based diet. PERIOD.

      She actually said "you CAN have it but you should choose not to". And then she gave the advice of being mindful about your choices. She also said don't go long periods of time without eating, stress management, adequate sleep, etc. She didn't flat out say "go ahead and have it"

      @@ASMRyouVEGANyet Thank you so much for your message! I did also listen to the entire episode. And there was a statement made that could be confusing for some people who struggle with finding the best approach to overcome obesity and its associated illnesses. My wish is that more physicians, especially those who specialize in health and wellness, would just be very clear and emphatic with individuals who genuinely struggle with food addiction. There are many of us who have spent hours, weeks, months, and sometimes years researching solutions. Only to regularly encounter a myriad of contradictory messages from various so called experts. In fact, for an addict of any kind there is no appropriate reason or time to indulge even a little, PERIOD. Because, the triggers are real and have the potential to cause irreversible outcomes. I am grateful to God for the bounty of beautiful plant based foods He created for us to eat to nourish our bodies and satisfy all our cravings (i.e. fatty, salty, sour, succulent, sweet, etc.). Since starting a whole food plant based diet I feel the best I’ve felt in many years. My prayer is that everyone suffering with a food addiction, and as a result an unwell body, will experience the joys of a restorative plant based diet. Peace!

    What bothers me is that the doctors I see weigh you with clothes, shoes and stuff in your pockets and purse. This weight is documented by the assistant and then the doctor lectures you on your weight and BMI. Then they bill for counseling. Had this happen yesterday. 2nd post op appoint and I weighed 9 lbs. heavier than the week before simply because I had on heavier shoes and they didn’t give me time to put purse down. They do not adjust for this. Infuriates me!

      Because at a certain point those things don't make a huge impact. If you are overweight, you're overweight. If it was borderline they will factor in for that.

      It took me a while to ignore the doctor's scale. I pay attention to my own scale and pay attention to what I have done that causes it to show a different number. Though, you should complain to the doctor, or office manage, about not being allowed to put your heavy purse down before being weighed -- it it makes you uncomfortable, it probably makes others uncomfortable.

      There is a talk called 'How not to diet' on CZcams by Dr. Greger. He is sometimes not easy to listen to but he has gathered very good sientific knowledge for weight loss.
      I love all his long talks.

      I tried The Mayo Clinic Diabetes Diet written by Dr Donald D. Hensrud and lost 30 pounds and kept most of it off for a year and a few months. This diet recommends a serving of fruit and nonstarchy vegetables with meals and measures protein, carbohydrates and fat with meals. (Fruit doesn't go towards carbohydrate count with meals.) Enjoy eating a serving of fruit with every meal.

    I try not to refer to processed and junk edibles as food. Dr Joel Fuhrman has referred to it as doof because it’s the opposite of real food. Frankenfoods is another favorite of mine. Dr Susan Pierce Thompson names it NMF, not my food. I may on occasion eat for emotional comfort, but my high fiber whole food is self limiting. I will be stuffed, satiated, and know I have a great bowel movement ahead of me. My only regret may be that I am out of dates and nuts for the rest of the month.

Indeed I find it far easier to be completely off things I want to avoid rather than rationing them: like I stopped buying chocolate albeit dark vegan chocolate but still: once it is in my home it's just torture and guilt. Similarly I love to graze, nibbling fruit, nuts, dates, prunes and roasted chickpeas now and then - though i realise a long gap between meals/snacks is far better - so I balance that with a sort of intermittent fast: I hardly ever achieve a 16 hour gap but aim for it, with an absolute minimum of 13 hours, often more. It's easier to eat nothing, but once I start eating I find it not that easy to stop. So yes, total avoidance over cheating/mindful indulgence is better.
      Even so, for those not actually addicted, saying mindful indulgence is better than calling it cheating. On my birthday this year I ordered 3 bars of 72% cocoa dark chocolate, no animal ingredients and managed to make it last several days without much stress. 3 bars from amazon because one or two bars had delivery charges, no charge for 3, else i would have ordered one. But now I probably won't order or buy chocolate till my next birthday. Peace. 🤗

      It stands to reason that it's bad for your mental health to try to follow the "healthiest" possible diet when there is so much disagreement about what is and isn't healthy long term even among the so-called experts. There are many people who have given up on the vegan diet too because after several years they accepted that the critics are probably right. You reduce your risk for some problems but probably increase your risk for a different list of problems.

    I wish, eating WFPB would be enough for me. Unfortunately, I am overweight nevertheless, following Dr. Gregers Daily Dozen and all his recommendations. I guess, I have to become raw vegan :D

      Dr Brooke Goldner makes it easy to reverse chronic conditions and losing weight is a nice side effect. She is high raw plant based. For me, I have to stop eating so many nuts and go low fat vegan to lose weight. I think Chuck had Dr Goldner on here recently, you can look and see. Her presentation has made the rounds of the vegan interview shows, it’s usually named How to Reverse Autoimmune and Chronic Disease With Supermarket Foods. Her first book was Goodbye Lupus, because she cured her incurable Lupus which led her to become a doctor. She has a free community and free online classes, the only one I’ve found that doesn’t charge. She began her career serving the homeless and she wants everyone to have this information, not just people who can afford it. She’s an angel.

      I tried The Mayo Clinic Diabetes Diet written by Donald D. Hensrud and lost 30 pounds. This diet measures your fat, protein and carbohydrate intake and recommends eating nonstarchy vegetables and fruit with every meal. I like being able to have fruit with every meal. One of my favorite fruits is cantaloupe as a serving is one cup and eating one cup of this fruit really helps fill me up.

      I think that in this interview, the focus was on psychological issues when one is trying to lose weight and how to deal with those issues. So this was different than other interviews, but necessary as this aspect of weight loss is often ignored, which causes people not being able to follow a dietary program long term.

    All you have to do is cut all sugar and grains out of your diet and eat a high fat and protein diet. No fruits and no highly processed crap and the weight will magically come off. Eggs, bacon, butter, cheese, steak, salmon, sardines, avocados, whole milk plain yogurt. It's that easy

    No. Food is NOT addictive. It is silly to equate food with alcohol, nicotine, opioids, and narcotics. No one is snorting confectioners sugar or injecting maple syrup into their veins. It simply tastes good. So good people continue to eat when they are not genuinely hungry. This is NOT the same thing. Unlike truly addictive substances no one gets "sick" from reducing the amount of food they eat. Anyone can control their food consumption. They just have to want too.

      Not true at all. Obesity is a disease. Period. Education is the key. You need to do your own research. Try a bit harder to see the other side. Remember Obesity is a disease to be treated like a disease. You already have your mind made up. I would like to see you gain 100 pounds. Then lose it. Yes, you. Gain it in one year then lose it it one year then keep it off. Good luck.

      @@kathimiller6289 Calling obesity a disease is nether here nor there. My post didn't say anything about obesity. It said that food is not "addictive". What is important is that obesity is 100% self inflicted. Telling people that food is "addictive" and obesity is a disease is just giving people excuses and removing personal responsibility for their condition. Anybody can reach and maintain a healthy weight. It is not hard. There is no mystery as to why people are fit, overweight, fat, or obese. We've known this for several million years ever since our ancestors figured out which way is up and climbed down from the trees.
