It's probably been said over and over again, but Ingvar Kamprad was the founder of IKEA. IKEA is an acronym that stands for Ingvar Kamprad Elmtaryd Agunnaryd. Elmtaryd is the town Ingvar grew up in, and Agunnaryd is a town adjacent to it.
I literally slapped my forehead when he read that bit out and didn't know who it was....
I probably never knew any of this! 😁
20 years from now, some collector is going to be posting this for sale for 545,000$ cause it comes with the original box AND unused goop.
$45,000 more than his Klon goes for (adjusted for inflated expeditions)
LoL
That’s exactly why I ordered 2 lol
This is Genius on so many levels..big hand for Josh at JHS..👏👏👏👏👏👏
This even to my old ears is a nice sounding pedal. Thanks Ryan. JHS has a winner with this DIY Klone clone.
"I Tasha Yar'd it up" 🤣 I love you subtle humour, man! Live long and prosper!
For me as a swede, this is really funny! :D
would have liked to hear a goop vs non goop vs total goop comparison
Instant like for including a 'total goop' option, haha
yes what happens if you choose not to goop ?
@@CRM_114 easier repair later on
@@CRM_114 All the tone leaks out. 😟
Hah 'Tasha Yar'd it up' 🖤🤣
Goopus, Skin of Evil
That made me chuckle😂
Thank you for that reference!
Cant belive he used that reference 😂
Watched you trundle through the assembly thinking I’d just see another distortion that sounds like the rest. Your tone philosopher skills got put to good use. Sounds pretty damn good. I bought one.
"I Tasha Yar'd it up" was hilarious, cracked me up. Although, I'm surprised you let the goop dry for nearly 24 hours; I was under the impression you liked pedals that dripped?
Oh I need one of these. Thank you!
Ingvar Kamprad was IKEA's founder.
At the start I thought this was just a really fun way to sell a product AND reduce labour time. But when I saw you take the circuit board out and saw they'd cast the substrate into spanner shapes ... well I had to find a hat from somewhere just so I could take it off again as a salute (pause to mention I'm a former electronic engineer, and "Substrate" refers to the fibre glass material that is the basis all the conductive tracks are built onto) 2:02 into the video and I'm impressed.
I will say that everyone who works in PCB assembly has to get used to snapping PCBs apart , and virtually EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM drew blood the first time they did it, and had to adapt to learn how not to do that .
@4:06 welp! there ya go!
This kit will probably shed a lot of national blood, potential purchasers really need to be cool with that.
Its the shedding of blood for this pedal that gives its amazing tone. Blood sacrifice!
This was fantastic! Thanks for letting us watch you have fun with this. It really is all about the experience and this kit nails it.
Josh is going to sell a billion of these. What a great idea.
Thanks Ryan for the fun and the comprehensive tone investigation. I have one on order (the cute kids already took care of that, I’m a soft touch 😂) and it’s going to be added to my pedal board overhaul that I’m planning for this winters tone project. Great show as always!
I've had a number of overdrives over the years, my favourite was the TS-10. Bought the Notaklön for fun. It has now replaced the TS-10 on my board.
Thanks Josh.
Extra Two Princetons jingle time! You have redeemed yourself, sir. The messier the gooping, the more honor you convey to Bill Finnegan.
Ingvar Kamprad is the IK in IKEA.
But why did he add Elmtaryd and Agunnaryd, but not Ljungby or Kronoberg? Inquiring minds want to know.
@@mjdbruynprobably because Ikea sound better than iklr or something like that
I think it sounds great! Fun video, thanks, now I have to have one! The extra washer is funny as hell.
That pedal actually sounds really good to me. I like the fact that it didn't muddy up the chords like so many OD pedals do. It was also a pleasant change to hear you play a few new licks. Nice review, I'm going to have to pick one of these up for myself.
I thought mud was the point lol.
The goop is hilarious. I also love the little Ikea aesthetics version of the Klon's centaur graphic in the instructions.
Sounds great!! Perfect amount of goop!
Thanks for the jam!
best demo of the pedal ive seen so far
EXTENDED PRINCETON JINGLE LET'S GOOOOOOOOOO 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 thx sir
Speaking of a good gag...love the two princetons theme. ❤
The first do it yourself assembly outfit was Oleson electronics.Prolly 1951. Radios amps, etc.
Tasha Yar’ed it up! Haha nice Trek ref!
As someone who detests 'magic' circuitry wank, this product makes me extremely happy.
*Guitar tone snobs and audiophile rage tears intensify*
Great idea by JHS. But they should have included some fairy dust in the kit. For me the Klon circuit delivers some of the best sounds out there. On it's own and stacked. I like to combine it with a Blues Breaker Circuit.
If you include fairy dust in the box it would turn it into a real Klon to protect it from mistreatment during shipping
It's suspended in the goop.
Klon is the perfect surf overdrive and great for every thing else as far as I'm concerned, it does magical things to an AC30 cranked up ! The klon gives horsepower boost to Marshall amps for big hair metal ! You heard how great it sounds in fender ! What more need I say, it's the best over all do-all pedal !
God, the DIY, the tools in the pcb, the ikea references, the GOOOOOOP, this thing is a 10/10 marketing and product result, i love it
That pedal makes some pretty good vibes, the price is good $99
I’ve been watching you for a couple days now I just stumbled across your channel and I absolutely freaking love it! This is by far my Favorite video! Just for clarity, the name notaklon is referring to the most iconic overdrive pedal of all time which this is designed to copy. of course I’m talking about the iconic klon overdrive. This Pedal on the market today goes for about $8000 and This is the best representation of what the klon truly is. I just bought two of them a couple months ago and I’m still waiting for delivery. I’m gonna give one to one of my best friends who is an awesome guitar player. I love how you went through all the different colors and distortions and overdrives with this pedal. it was very informative and when I present the gift to my friend, I’m also going to give him this video as well. Keep up the great work. Thank you so much. Look forward to the next video. so long, your friend sincerely and God bless Mr. Jommins.
In 2007, Bill sent me two ungooped boards and schematic, to see if I could achieve a small change to the Klon sound that some unspecified customers had requested. One of the boards had every single component - active AND passive - socketted, so that I could change part values and compared it to stock. What was readily apparent was the build quality. The pots were not the cheap Alphas we are accustomed to in pedals, but much higher quality. I built a rig for A/B footswitching back and forth between the two boards, and you could set the knobs pointing to the exact same spot on each unit AND get the exact same sound and level.
Critical to the Klon's best functioning and sound is the balance between clean and dirty paths. The Gain control adjusts both the degree of dirt AND the clean/dirty balance in specific ways, doing about 4 things at once. If one is using cheaper pots, where the two halves are not matched, there is a reasonable risk that the optimal path-balance will not be achieved. So, if you can do it, get yourself a *good* dual-ganged Gain pot to replace what the JHS unit likely comes with.
The kerfuffle over "magic diodes" also pertains to the clean/dirty balance. When diodes are used for clipping they set a maximum signal level, based on their "forward voltage". Germanium diodes of even the same part number can show variation in what that forward voltage is, some allowing more signal to pass, and some less. In pedals that use only a single path for clipped signal, variation in diodes can be easily compensated for by altering gain. Because the best aspects of the Klon lay in the *balance* of clean and dirty levels, selecting diodes for their forward voltage was something Bill spent time and effort in doing. I have no knowledge of what the target value was/is. And because neither Bill nor I are engineers (I'm just a psychologist who likes to build pedals), my guess is he doesn't either. The simplest thing is just to pin down a source of diodes that meet the spec, and not change from those.
Ingvar is also the name of the Annoying European Guy who appeared in many of IKEA's classic radio and TV commercials.
That's cool that JHS included prefab tools in that kit! That's better than modern IKEA stuff, where some of the hardware is either not provided or woefully missing.
Ingvar Kamprad is also the founder of ikea.
ingvar kamprad is the founder of ikea, that's why lol
SWEET! (I always listen to these types of things with headphones.....ALWAYS!)
Your guitar playing has improved so much!
No it hasn’t. My editing has gotten better though lol.
He's Pic-Syncing. 🤣
Impressive pedal and a great idea. Even more impressive that this guy knew I was watching on the toilet for 21 minutes and 35 seconds.
@5:22 yes, yes I could imagine. It's part of my day job! 😆
That surf lick starting to evolve.
that was a beautiful ending song. I thought you said you sucked lol. thats not a sucky sounding song at all. that pedal definitely fits josh'es sense of humor, and great sounding too. thanks for the long 2 Princeton's needed a good laugh today
nice
loop and feedbacky solo at the end
Always dig your vids.. but your playing out at the end using the pedal? HECK YES... Great vibe! That should be Klöned too. (I'm thinking we need to all make a Josh-head sticker for these boxes). I'm gonna make a JHS Goop pick.
Tragic TNG reference, gotta love it. 😂
Ingvar Kamprad was the guy who started IKEA in a little shack in southern Sweden in the...early 50's Something like that lol. His initials are the IK part of IKEA 😁
I have never owned a Klon but I do have a J Rockett Archer Icon that's pretty darned close.... It's good for adding a touch of EQ presence & a bit of hair to a decent clean tone. I hear that happening with the Notaklon you have built, Ryan.
From the goop jokes to your extra long whammy bar, this is a perfect episode!
This is perfect to force me to get my ass up and finally create something❤
7:26 I Tasha Yar'd it up...obscure lil Trekkie ref XD LOVE IT
I hope they made a lot of these.
Great... now I have to rearrange my pedalboard.
Haha totally watching this on the toilet when you said "not sure the tone will come through if you are hearing this on the toilet."
I bought one of these and the gooping is the part that is going to drive my anxiety through the roof.
that 20 inch trem bar is something else. lol
He knows you usually tear every thing you get apart , he’s just making it easier for you
I wonder if, years from now, peeps will be debating which version sounds better... the 'gooped' or 'non-gooped' JHS Notaklön.. 😊
I want one!
Reminds me of Build Your Own Clone pedals. BYOC!
I've got some serious goopin' to do around the house, would you suggest this kit for general gooping?
Love that 2 Princeton's theme song. Don't ever stop playing that bad boy.
ignore this guy , he's drunk. ;-)
That looks fun. Maybe they should make a verb pedal next. 😮😮😮😮
I think it's "NOT A Klon," sounds good!
Yeah man, Chris Baron! That's it! 😂
Man, that’s some long whammy bar!
Pretty good demo Ryan, cheers mate. Your video has given me a more positive view of this pedal. I hope I don’t buy it ‘cause I already have a Klon clone. Cheers!
Since it has to sit for 24 hrs to cure the goop guess that means the return policy is 23 hrs ,LOL
Dayum!! And no Swedish meatballs?!! But plenty of Goop!
Ive used a Klone for a boost in surfy contexts, its pretty decent
Interesting concept, nothing like self checkout @ Walmart?More satisfying and educational.
4:04 Haha.. Only you, Ryan.
i don't know if i need another OD pedal, and i don't really know if i understand what sets klon style OD apart from others (aside from the prices of klons and the internet controversy of years past)... but i really do like the kit-for-dummies approach...clever stuff. and i mean it sounds fine here. if they did a RAT version, maybe i'd pick one up..... also, maybe you can use the rest of the goop to draw silly patterns or art on the front? might be a fun idea?
Fun! course there's Tumnus and Soul Food and Golden Fleece and I dunno what else.
I'm going to have fun with the one I bought.
I guess I'll buy one.. Have to help support the JHJS Families.
Is that trem bar 16 inches long or does the camera add 10 inches? :)
Looks and sounds great. I look forward to purchasing one of my own. I predict it will be in the top five of JHS pedals I've tried (if you exclude ones that have the same circuit, because the whitie tightie and the pulp n peel are both top five pedals to me, despite similarities). Thanks for showing us this one.
Stupid question but the goop is just a reference to Bill putting epoxy on the circuit to hide it right? In theory it's not doing anything and you could skip this?
Correct
imagine putting the goop somewhere where there's no circuit, that would be funny lol
It was initially used by the military to protect sensitive components from vibrations and dust/elements so it’s not doing “nothing” but yes it’s just a funny reference in this case
I heard that Ingvar Kamprad was the IK in IKEA, but don’t quote me on that. 😺
Great outro tune...
This is a great present I think with christmas coming up - in a similiar vein to the Fender Lego (which I also got as a present a couple of years back). Spend family time making this while everyone is hanging out, then during later when everyone is in their food comas, go and play with the new toy. Linked it to my brother to grab 1 for me, otherwise I'll defo have a crack at this in the new year.
Though, does the goop do anything for those diodes, or is it really just there to cover them as part of the fun?
Well it’s mostly for fun to poke fun of the fact the original was covered in goop, but that’s an old military trick to protect components from vibrations and sudden jarring too, so both?
Just a joke, but the above comment about the military use is interesting.
Holy cow! Hold the front page folks ... worldwide scoop: CZcams guitar blokes read equipment manual ...
EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT! CHRIS DRAKE 447 COMPLAINS ABOUT A VIDEO!
It's Tone Goop 😁
Maybe 1951 and perfect assembly refers to the Fender Broadcaster and the Leo Fender first factory made guitar!
Rhett Shull also had the extra nut…..hilarious.
There's another video of this getting A/B'd with a real Klon. There's literally zero difference. I was amazed. I ordered on right away.
the klon recipe has been pretty well figured out at this point. There are differences from brand to brand but most klones do the thing.
Go Go Gadget Fingers!! I’m glad it’s Not a Klon cos I prefer it, especially for £82 in UK / U$99 I’d rather spend this much lower price than £6K for an OG Klon or plus £600 for KTR, when the tone you get is pretty much exact, you’ve gotta be a total guitar turd if you are gonna say there’s a noticeable difference in tone, which there will be someone that’s got to spend thousands for an OG, but no one in an audience would no the difference or even care as long as what you’re playing sounds decent.
Plus a you mention you have the added bonus of assembling the pedal and learning a bit more about pedal electronics, which will definitely spark a huge number of players interest, it’s an excellent marketing and selling feature and I reckon this will soon be JHS’s biggest selling pedal and will take their business and growth of the company to the next level for years to come. So good luck and excellent work JHS on this pedal release. You also can design you own artwork for the pedal chassis however you like with it being plain white.
Cheers Ryan for a great review and nice playing.
Ingvar Kamprad is the founder of IKEA
Has that RONCO “as seen on TV” appeal.
It sounds good and looks fun to assembly it. Long time no Drip Video, what about the SolidGold Fx Surf Rider last version? I found about it last week and was surprised that pedal didnt make it through 60 Cycle Hum.
Ive been thinking about doing a drip video where i show off what you get a different price points. I remember the Surf Rider leaned into the belton brick clicky sort of sound but if i get a chance to check out the new version I will.
@@60CycleHumcastit sounds really cool! Would love to see a shootout!
ok the midi 2 princes was legendary rotf
that bridge humbucker is michrofonic, or maybe picking up springs from whammy
This kit is super value for the price. Best klon clone and you get to diy it. Super nifty experience and awesome pedal.
Genius!
My guy, Inspector Gadget.
Ingvar Kamprad, the founder and the IK in IKEA
Reminds me of my old caline Medusa
I feel like you found it at 19:08 🤘
Where, oh WHERE did you find that tremolo arm? It's perfect!
a viewer was making them and sent me one, I cant find them on reverb so im assuming hes sold out now.
Came to ask where to get those crazy long viggle schtiken, but i see we lost out. Boo.
jhs is amazing!
Inspector Gadget.... 🤘🏼😂
