    Even if someone refinished and restored that Strat body, all of the things that make a valuable collectible are gone. No provenance in terms of having been played or owned by someone famous, no date stamps, etc., to prove a specific manufacture date, and the contours have been changed during the original refin(s). At most, it could turn out to be a good player.

  • @MuscleCarLover
    @MuscleCarLover Před 13 dny

    In the context of a solid body acoustic or bass, I don't believe in tonewood, not because I'm left leaning, but because of tests that were run where with my eyes closed or looking down away from the screen, I couldn't hear the difference when everything else stayed the same.
    If there's a sound chamber, then I believe that the top wood is the biggest contributor to the change in tone when everything else stays the same.
    With any solid body that's plugged in, the biggest contributors are...
    1. The speaker (with or without mics running to a PA with their own speakers on top)
    2. The length of the cable and whether there's pedals within that length (the more length and/or amount of pedals drops off the amount of treble)
    3. The position of the pickup along the scale length (closer to the bridge has more treble, closer to the nut has more bass)
    4. The position where you pluck the strings (same effect)
    5. The tuning you are running (E standard, Open G, half step down etc)
    For a semi hollow electric, I believe that top wood does make an effect, but a slight difference, the bigger difference is in the existence of a sound chamber which makes the overall tone a bit more airy in nature. Bigger difference when in the room and less difference when on a stage running through a PA, but would be retained if you have a mic set up at the guitar like an acoustic.
    That's my verdict and I think it's a fair assessment

  • @showland2727

    The only thing I had against what Paul said was when he said "they think a rubber bridge and dead strings aren't going to change the sound" when no one was saying that, at all. I personally really enjoy a bunch of different guitars and basses and really like them all for being different and made of different things and having their own feel. Paul makes some very nice guitars but he also can come off as a complete ass, like when he started his rant with insults. So I can see people not wanting his stuff, he makes amazing guitars though. It is really cool that he is still the man behind the company and not just a corporation without a face, even if he can be polarizing.

  • @dasninjastix
    @dasninjastix Před 16 dny +2

    I'm still new to guitar but.. first they told me that tone is in the fingers, then they said that you need a tube amp to get a proper tone, next it was you need to learn how to EQ to dial in the correct tone, then someone told me there were pedals to bend tones, now I'm learning about belief systems based on whether or not tone is in various woods. I'm not sure the guitar community, professional musicians, or the electrical engineers who make this equipment are all using the word "tone" the same way. If my life has taught me anything it's that equivocation is the quickest way to the longest arguments.

    i think a better gauge of the tone wood argument would be by age group. i think most younger people don't buy into it. I think whatever difference it does or doesn't make is neglible in electric instruments. I've yet to hear a difference in the tone that was beyond what can be tweaked in your eq stack on your amp. A guitar is the sum of it's parts, and there are far more influential parts on the tone than the wood.

    The more hands that Strat body goes through, the less convincing the provenance. Without markings, from an unknown seller, I wouldn't value it more than it's intrinsic value as a player grade, so $3-400 tops. I love the colour though! When was it refinned? Way back it was just another Strat and the owner didn't like the look. Once rebuilt, I bet it didn't play or sound worse, so fine.

    Paul's reliance on apples to oranges analogies to make his arguments is upsetting ie:
    "A pick up is nothing but a microphone. I could put a microphone on Barbra Streisand and Michael Bublé and I wouldn't get the same sound. "
    he's saying that the tone wood is like the performer, the performer is clearly the guitarist.
    The way that he dismisses everyone who argues with him as dudes in their mom's basement sitting in their underwear is also not a very effective strategy, yet relating to people who are dialog with your discussion.
    it was also kind of hilarious when he brought out a bunch of Tonewood blanks, and smack them with a stick, claiming that the different sound that they made, when smacked with a stick equated to different tones when used to build a guitar.
    with all that said, it would be very easy for Paul to perform some AB test that would give him a slam dunk at least when it comes to fretboards wood. It's really easy to hear the difference there. And would prove his point very effectively. Dare I say, even more effectively than calling everyone who disagrees with him dudes in their underwear

There are minor differences, but without hearing the tones back-to-back, I wouldn't be able to say i liked one better than another. So I believe wood affects tone, but I don't care very much. I'd much rather spend time choosing the right pickups.

    • @ryanpetriello3461
      @ryanpetriello3461 Před 16 dny

      Wood absolutely changes how an instrument sounds acoustically, and among acoustic instruments the wood is extremely important, but for amplified electric instruments it's not necessarily going to translate because magnetic pickups sense disturbances in their magnetic field caused by strings, so the only element wood can really influence is how a string vibrates in a way that's a step or two removed from the more direct elements of the chain (like player, strings, pickup, pickup height, electronics, etc.). In the amplified sound, I personally think that there will be bigger differences from changing strings, swapping pickups, changing pot values, adjusting the pickup height, playing harder or softer, etc. than different woods will have. Wood can absolutely change how an instrument feels to play, and that can change how one approaches an instrument, which will in turn affect the amplified sound, but that's not necessarily the wood imparting its toan onto the vibration of the strings.

    Paul Reed Smith didn't do himself any favors in that Chicago Music Exchange talk by misrepresenting what the other side of the tonewood debate is actually saying. Pretty much eliminated any benefit of the doubt or goodwill I was willing to spot him. Not that his claim of their new tuner buttons improving tone build much confidence in his opinion to begin with....

      @@stevenpipes1555I see what you’re saying. All my bodies have different variations depending on the person who sanded it at the factory. For example the pickup cavities having uneven routings as stock as well as the neck pockets. @@goovialisticprofunks I looked specifically at that spot for the evidence of sanding because that's what I did on my first Strat re finish. When you look straight at the neck plate, from the back, you should see the edge of the neck plate, then the edge of the pocket, which should be flush with the edge of the neck heel. But on this one the neck heel is going to stick past the edge of the pocket just a little. It won't make a difference in playability, I still have my mistake Strat and it's perfectly fine, but on a vintage Strat that will be a deal breaker for most collectors. Especially at that premium price. And I guarantee that if you could sit and compare that to an un altered Strat body, you would find more discrepancies. I'd bet money that the belly cut is far too deep now as well.

  • @stevenpipes1555
    @stevenpipes1555 Před 16 dny

    It's so simple! When you tap on the body or neck you can hear it through the amp. This is because when the guitar vibrates it transfers some of that energy into the strings. Since every piece of wood on earth is unique, like a fingerprint, then naturally, OBVIOUSLY, each piece of wood is going to re transfer that energy in a slightly different way. Can you tell the difference between maple and mahogany blindfolded? Who cares, the fact is that you can hear subtle differences between guitars. And if your playing that guitar you can FEEL the differences between them greatly. And if you tell me that you've never picked up a guitar, solely because of the beautiful wood and finish, then you're a liar. Tonewood matters for many reasons, and the sound from the amp is the least important of all of them.
