I hauled the Afford-a-Board all the way to Kansas City just so I could have it graded in person by 'Professor Pedal" himself Josh Scott. Josh seems to like every pedal hes ever tried but what is his expert opinion on what the affordaboard has to offer? tune in to find out.

"Im just angry and cheap" "that makes you a philosopher"
Lol literally JUST about to comment the same thing. So funny 😆
Average American? Is that YOU?! I've missed you!!! 💝🎁
"You're like a tone philosopher."
"No, no. I like that pedal but it's not cheap enough."
im snorting me beer lol
That was very witty from Josh 👍
It's like one kid showing another his new Lego.
- "I'm just angry and cheap"
- "That makes you a philosopher"
So true.
This should be a T shirt
Well, we need to define our terms first. I'm not doing that unless I get paid.
Josh is one smart, witty, solid dude.
That’s classic
Josh is such a great sport. He could be “yeah, it’s cute for it’s price.” Instead he’s like, “this is really cool I’m going to feature this on my show.”
The whole while his own business is potentially in direct competition. What a solid dude!
There's room for lowballers, and top tier in every industry.
@@Pure_KodiakWILD_Power right. Inexpensive doesn't always mean "cheap". As a player you will pay what you think a certain effect/sound is worth TO YOU. If you can afford a Klon get a Klon, if you can only afford a clone.... it's also a really good way to test drive stuff before you potentially commit a paycheck to something that you might not love.
@@daddyosink4413 I've been building my own "AffordABoard", and some of the pedals that I've bought, have been after watching Ryan (Mr. Hum) demo them. If you're on a budget and need to hear what something sounds like............(oaky Austrian voice) GIT YOOR AHS TO YOOTOOB!!!
being cool about competition is one thing the greatest only can do.
He's clearly not a snob :) and he is really analizing how the circuits sound, that's awesome :D
thats because he's a businessman. his only goal is to squeeze money out of you so he puts on the nice guy persona
"There's no reason not to own this." - - - This is going to get buried in the 400 other remarks, so whatevs. But ... These two guys (you two guys on the off chance either of you see this) & Henning are f#cking awesome for actually demoing these things - & also for not saying "for the money" everytime. Some of these things are just plain "great" regardless of the price. In the hundreds of thousands of AliBaba specials there's of course lots of garbage - but there's some real jems. I love having a 6-pedal board that sounds good that costs the same as a "regular" overdrive (which is of course cool too). Thanks for digging through the pile on our behalf.
Ha, that's a great observation, saying "for the money" every time ruins a lot of these videos...who wants to watch mediocre sounding gear reviews, right ? But some snobs are more concerned with protecting their boutique ears reputation before admitting to the talent behind some affordable products.
...and three years on the magic is still working. Last night I ordered three pedals based on Ryans videos.
I'm always amazed on Josh's capacity to pull just the right chords/riffs ideas to showcase pedals!!
He is at his best when he has the box!
well you know he personally has designed and built pedals, so...
Josh is always talking so politely and respectful about cheap pedals, some day I have to return the favour and buy a JHS pedal :P
Hmmm, well maybe that uni vibe pedal, but no more.
Might I reccomend the Haunting Mids
I bought a Lucky Cat delay for the same reason.
I was thinking exactly the same rn
Bonsai Tube screamer is the tits!
'This episode sponsored by Tour Gear Design, makers of patch cables'. Ryan: 'these Hosa cables are my favourite' hehe! :)
Yeah, I was confused about that
Hosa cables SUCK! I’ve had ‘em go bad in less than 2 WEEKS!
@@edryba4867 Back in the day, people would laugh you out of the room if you used Hosa cables, and now I see everybody raving about them. The thing about being an old timer, you've seen all the gold turn to shit, and all the shit turn to gold...
So what is everything really made of?
Belief.
- Tone Filosofer.
@@edryba4867 aa
Yeah I generally don’t mess with Hosa unless desperate and the store has nothing else.
They make 1 gig midi cables but it got you through the gig until you unplugged it and the ground broke 😆. I think the patch cables may fair better and are easy to replace or potentially repair but I am spoiled now and don’t mind spending as much on two patch cables as a Chinese fuzz box.
I GUARANTEE that less then 5 minutes after ending the taping here, Josh pulled the back off that Donner to plumb it's mysteries!
That's typical Josh... Hell, if it was me, I would've done the same thing.
"I've never been accused of not being bright enough". You've clearly not been reading the comments Ryan.
BOOM! ROASTED!
@@60CycleHumcast With Love tho ;)
@@60CycleHumcast Any chance you would be so kind as to describe what's on the bass afford-a-board?
Josh is a pedal manufacturer, but also a pedal lover.
It’s nice to hear his attitude toward affordable pedals as appreciating how nice this is for guitarists instead of how terrible it is to have to compete with them on price.
“Every step of a good guitar tone has destroyed the signal in some way”. Truer words have never been spoken.
Alternately stated: The history of electric guitar is the history of *really bad* audio engineering.
@@Liko81DJ Why doesn't CZcams have a LOVE reaction!?!?!? *bows reverently*
"Let me know if im boring you to death"
Every guitarist says these words once in their life
Usually to a woman sitting alone on a bed while the rockstar she expected to hook up with plays with the knobs on his affordaboard "I can't believe I use to pay prostitutes to reside while listen to me jam, girlfriends rock"
@@mytorment this is hilarious, i haven’t yet been able to play in front of a special someone. but it’s still relatable, they have that posture set like their waiting to leave. 😂
I’m glad Josh said it here, “if it works, you can use it” *Ode to Joy plays at 120dB* yes yes yes. We don’t all need the exact same gear and there’s no shame if you get the sounds you want and get to make music w your friends.
I just realized how perfect Ryan would be on a 90’s sitcom. Look at that funny turn and face the camera while the intro plays. Look! what’s that in his hands? Haha it’s more guitars! Oh Ryan! Lol gosh
I think he was in a bunch .Get a life, every one loves Raymond, The king of Queens, The Nanny, The naked truth .Oh wait,my bad.
His smile is so cute lol
Ryan: “only two of these exist”
Josh: *you had my curiosity, but now you have my attention*
5:50
Bilt: hey Josh, how many pickup you want on this custom Jaguar style guitar
Josh: yes
Well, if you're in the business of testing pedals, a guitar with every pup type is kinda logical. Trouble is, _I_ want one, thanks to Josh.
@@johnvcougar i was just thinking that ... my last guitar to get by type is a short scale with as much going on as possible as i dont have room for more ... this will be guitar #30 and ive still got shit i waaaant
All of them
I have that reverb. It’s kept a few far more expensive options off my board when I’ve tried them. Absolutely awesome little pedal.
Haha so true 😂 The mosky Reverb is still on my board and the Earthquaker devices Ghost Echo had to go.. Sad but true story
Both looking tired, yet doing a great job chatting about things you both care about. Always appreciate Josh's take on other peoples pedals.
Makes you want to hug these dudes and thank them for their guidance and good humour...
I absolutely love having a pedal guru like Josh commenting on these affordable pedals. Thanks!
America’s answer to That Pedal Show
@Dave Carpenter i think he just meant two white guys talking pedals, nothing to do with the gear itself
@@Ottophil exactly! 😂🤣. What if you had Keenan Ivory and Damon Wayans reprising their “Mo Money” characters reviewing pedals from the back of a delivery truck 🙃
@Dave Carpenter they have done afforda-board style videos already nice try tho
Watching Josh being so calm and not as hyperactive as he usually is like this is hella weird
i noticed this too
The entire Afford-A-Board series is fantastic, but this video is sooo academic in the right ways. Easy to understand and follow, even for newbie like myself. Great content!
My thoughts to the T
Josh is so cool and supportive. And Honest. He never trashes on stuff he feels is good. Its why I trust and support him completely
Such a great concept to have Josh weigh in on the afford-a-board!! Nice work Ryan! 🎸
Btw got my Iset Flanger and Cuvave Fuzz in the mail today 🙌
“Just the same dumb noodling thing that doesn’t mean anything and has no origin.” That’s my rut too 😞
I have so much respect for Josh. He designs, manufactures and sells pedals for a living and yet he doesn't diss pedals by other brands. Remarkable character. I am going to buy me a JHS Series 3 pedal even though I'm try to build my own affordaboard.
In this day and age it's not worth it bashing other brands publically, he would get called out on it too much and it wouldn't be worth the hassle
Ryan, your Affordaboard series has been amazing to see evolve. Perfect branding on your part. You may want to 'retire' this board and then start with "Affordaboard 21" where you start again with the shootouts on currently (2021) available pedals. Then at the end of the year compare A-20 vs A-21 boards.
Seriously, this should be re-titled - "Watch Josh Scott explain how tone works." Great video!
In the UK, the first Harry Potter movie is called the Philosophers Stone. This afford-a-board video is the Philosophers Tone!! Lol! 🤣🤣
Josh Scott being given a brief tutorial on how to find cheap pedals on Amazon, is priceless...much unlike the affordaboard. The look on Josh's face was hilarious!
"Im just angry and cheap" "that makes you a philosopher"
As a guy who studied philosophy in university, I resemble this remark.
That's cute. The only thing better than playing with my pedals is watching as my friend is going with the flow of my pedalboard... It's priceless.
Road case series sponsored by tour gear design cables. Spends several minutes raving about Hosa cables. This just goes to show that Ryan don't give a damn about being a slave to sponsors!
I get he's making a living but it cheapens the whole thing. It's less entertainment and more advertising.
Where’s the Harmony Guitars? Oh wait, he NEVER plays it.
Truly one of my favorite videos and the tones that you both pull from these are so different! Such great content!!! Thank You both!!!
The Donner delay is really sweet, but they just added a dual tape echo that is just bazonkers. Unbelievably good and if you're a stereo guy, you're gonna flip.
I got to say I love seeing you two guys together. The perfect duo for guitar pedal introspection.
Thank you both! Can't tell you HOW MUCH I enjoyed that lil' tidbit of valuable entertainment.
Two of the very best fun pedal savants on CZcams together. I hope this becomes a regular feature. That Afford-A-Board makes me want to buy every pedal on it even though I purchased an HX Stomp so I wouldn't need to buy separate pedals any more. What an awesome video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience. You guys had me laughing out loud as well. 😎😂
Crazy how my 1st take on some of those sounds was "well that's useless" but then Josh effortlessly throws together something so cool with it.
Great content here.
“I’m angry and cheep”
Josh: “That makes you a philosopher.”
It's fun to watch you guys together. You have great chemistry!
Ryan, this was so much fun to watch! You really have found amazing pedals for very affordable prices. Josh's approval just hammers home the point that you've already made so well - we absolutely do not need a huge budget to put together a really great sounding and fun pedalboard nowadays!
OK Josh asks "are these oxygen free cables?" You said "Is your cable cool?" If you do an entire video on the patch cables, I would be interested.
great video to watch, seeing Josh process the innards as he listens to the tones. This series motivated me to build a affordaboard. So far it consists of Soniccake Fazy Cream(Fuzz), Outlaw effects Deputy Marshall(Distortion),Mimidi(OD), Donner Evolution(Mod square),Ammoon Pockecho(Delay and Looper), Soniccake Twiggy blues.(4 in 1)About $320 canadian.
Incredible! I could listen to the two of you for days!
Josh that was a classy thing to do, to share your experience and point folks towards good cheap gear. Good on you!
Truly entertaining, Ryan. You and Josh in the same room is a good combo, we need to see one when you both have guitars in your hands.
All my pedals are "affordaboard" candidates, some of which I got after watching Ryan. My fav is the Cuvave Fuzz, but I love all the small format pedals. It's not only the price, it's the flexibility that you just cannot get from an all-in-one.
This is my favorite video from both of you. I’d love to see you hanging out and demoing more stuff, just casual like this.
What a good hang. Its a lot of fun to hear Josh's tech talk during this as well.
Fun fact: after Josh has said that Dolamo sounds kinda like the Klon, the pedal immediately went out of stock everywhere, and the price skyrocketed.
Funniiy enough it didn't. I think guitar 'buyers' just became crazier in the past couple of years. Luckily most normal people put the blame on them rather than Josh.
The roadcase theme song gets me everytime. It's the audio equivalent of a really bad dad pun
I really enjoyed this whole show. It was fun and informative! Also great playing by Josh! Thanks again Ryan!
That was fun! It was great to see Josh in a different head space. Great job. Thanks for this. I learned a lot.
Anyone who calls it "New X" is a cop
Seriously
Cool vid. Impressed with Josh's guitar playing he's legit
Great video guys!!! Thank You for posting this!!! I love the afford-o-board!!! Very cool of you guys to experiment with these awesome affordable pedals!, sounds great as always!!! Take care and be well!!!
Such expertise from Josh. Appreciate the 'thought process'. Great vid guys.
I too thought that the Mosky Spring Reverb had a bar code design, but it's actually replicating the three springs of a reverb tank. Nice pedal. I like mine a lot.
Caline is my favorite affordable pedal company
Great video! You guys work well off each other. The information Josh has on pedals is amazing too.
Really enjoyed this video. Such great stuff available for those starting to learn and for us old timers to enjoy without going into debt and ruin
Great comments from between 39.00 and 40.00, including the remark that by modern standards iconic pedals became that way, due to their availability at the time, and circumstance. This is great argument for using what you have, and not getting too hung up on perfection. I mean, there's a whole lot of signature guitars hanging on CEO'S walls that have never been played, and probably never will be.
My buddy recently got back into playing and needed a new board so I showed him your channel and he's been working on his own Affordaboard based on your recommendations. His name is also Ryan haha
Appreciate the always nuanced opinions of afford-a-board options. I just picked up the Mosky Reverb after viewing this review. It's a lovely reverb in any class. Thanks! Never would have found it if not for your review. Best to you guys.
I spy with my little eye... Atari 2600 cartridges.
Yep, can spot them from a distance anywhere!
I had repeated vibes of Ryan turning in his Afford-a-Board project in at JHS University. Professor Scott seemed to approve.
Great episode! Josh is such a cool guy - it always amazes me how open he is about reviewing essentially a ton of his competitor’s products. I love JHS Pedals, but can’t afford an entire JHS hoard, that where these afford-a-board pedal reviews really help out.
I have that Mosky “Spring Reverb” mini pedal. Playing thru my original/vintage 1965 Fender Champ amp, it really sounds amazing! I bought on Amazon, on sale for 50% off ($15 brand spanking new), and I love it.
This video was a ton of fun and informative. I hope you guys collaborate more often!
Space-bathroom reverbs are awesome.
The Mosky reverb sounds awesome
“I would have loved doing that!” That’s what I said about the reverse... referring to moist of my life after I gave up guitar. Man! So glad to be playing again-Thank you both.
You guys were hilarious together I watch this over and over!
Josh is like an encyclopedia of riffs and effects!!!
Ryan: "I've never been accused of not being bright enough."
25:38 Josh's pants: "Hold my beer."
I love your channel dude. I watch everything you do. Your knowledge and your whit keep me entertained the entire time. Thank you. I have purchased many pedals because of your thoughts. Your awesome dude. Keep up the great work!
I've been watching Josh for a few months and this might've been the most beautifully i've heard him play.
Josh’s a great guitar player! Like his style
Are we just glossing over the “Space Bathroom” reverb? I need THAT pedal ASAP.
Great vid, Ryan! Appreciate the collab; it was only a matter of time!
Cool seeing these two great personalities side by side
I found this channel through that jhs “does it drip” live show. Great channel. Great humor from this guy. Sorry I don’t know his name, I’m new here.
Dammit, Ryan, you have the best intro on the whole webbernet.
Cheers me up every time I see it,
and I think I am spending more time watching Ryan's videos playing guitar with pedals than I am spending learning how to play my guitar with pedals......
This was one of my favorite vids you have ever done. So cool to get his views on affordable pedals.
Low key watching this for the first time on Valentine’s Day a year later 😳
I like the Donner Reverb! It's called the Vintaverb. Definitely some modes better than other, and some noise, but it actually does some unique stuff I haven't seen anywhere! Infinite hold reverb with verb-d playover that feeds into it (it does get pretty loud when you do that so I run early chain into comp). Also DsVerb (distorted tails) is pretty cooo!
Donner does great pedals that go under the radar for some reason, but then again, that's good for us broke rockers who want to experiment and play with sounds without being discouraged by pricey pedals...
of course, I can't help thinking "so, this is what you get when you pass a $3,000 guitar through a $30 pedal into a $$$$ amp?"
You’re missing about 4 steps of post production, usually to try to calibrate recorded tone closer to the room, then factor in compression of exported audio, CZcams’s own compression, then it goes through the codex of your own pc/mobile, then your choice of speakers.
We literally never hear what they hear, and no I didn’t need Mick from TPS to explain all this but I’m glad he did for the folks flexing that they ‘hear a little fizziness in the top end”.
Brilliant, I think I have watched most of them already!
Dude! I've been watching your videos for a while (well, like a year-ish) and love JHS! How have I never seen this?!?!
You're great too, of course! Very cool!
It's Donner, short "o" and double-n, like the reindeer. The word means "thunder". The European (Turkish actually) meat dish is a Döner (Doener), one n, long "o", pronounced the same as one who makes a contribution to a cause. And now that's something you know.
Great vid, I'll be buying some pedals in the near future. 👍👍👍😃😃😃
First cuvave fuzz I got was glorious. I tried to buy a second as a backup and it sounded “fixed”. No bias gate shit. Booooo! Bought five more trying to find another. No dice. Dude... tell them to make them the old way! I was able to sell the ones I bought on reverb thankfully customers were happy with them.
Good to know, now I don’t need one 😆
awesome stuff man always good to see Scott videos dudes a beast
Wow, I picked up the ISET Flanger because of this video for $26.08 free shipping! It arrived in around 3 days if I recall, and it sounds great! Everything is solid and the switch is quiet through the amp and no white noise that I noticed in my setup. Thanks! I also have the Island on it's way to arrive this Friday.
Every time I see an affordable mini flanger with the 1 big knob, 2 small knobs and the mini toggle, I assume it's the same as Mooer e-lady. The one here does sound pretty much identical.
Btw Donner's own webpage sells the delay for $57 free shipping, while everywhere else (ebay, amazon) it's like $70-100 and $30 shipping.
just got mine for 59.99 amazon it will be here tomorrow
just sayin
This was gold. Truly. We need the guitar version video as well.
What a fantastic video guys. Have just hit buy on the donner island delay which ticks a huge amount of boxes for me, much appreciated.
Awesome honest review to get a pedal builder big up cheap pedals 👏Now take it to That pedal show and make Dan and Mick cry 😂💰
i stopped watching that pedal show a while ago, mick in particular turned a bit too snobbish for my taste.
@@calinguga You know I did also. And I own a g2 but something changed about their show and is hard to stomach now.
Gee it only took two week and some of these already jacked up the prices. The Donner is now $70(makes you want to eat people) . The Cuvave jumped $15 these others are still around the same
