UPDATE TO STORY: MVDP did start the race but did not finish. Mentally he was never in it after the situation unfolded the previous night. This video was made prior to his official start. Sources say he was staying at a hotel north of Wollongong, regardless if the kids knew who he was or not. Very immature behaviour and poor parental supervision. Overall very unfortunate situation. Will be following this story as it unfolds.

Our society is stuffed. The perpetuators get off scot free and the victim gets arrested. When I was a kid, if I knocked on strangers door and annoyed them, my father would have thrashed me. I am Australian and I am ashamed of what has happened. Apologies to Mathieu.

One of the worlds greatest cyclists is here to compete in the World Championships. All he wants is to be allowed to sleep and prepare for the next days race. Then these 2 brats continuously disturb him, with no parental supervision, and you think that is okay. You are part of the problem.

Security in front of your door? Man! This is cycling! No such thing! But to me it is clear: Eternal shame on the parents of these kids, on the hotel management and on the police force of Wollolong. And these kids? Ah, kids and their stupidity. A week long grounded an all the mandatory chores, should be punishment enough. And... I have sneaking suspicion that the last word hasn't been said about this.

How is it that rowdy teenagers are in a hotel where athletes sleep before a world championship?? What is the police doing in this country? What are the organizers doing? Mathieu is entitled to bring a civil action against the teenagers and their parents, against the Police and against the Organizer and ask for very heavy compensation.

He was staying in a hotel about an hour north of Wollongong. Chances are the kids had no idea who he was, and they were just doing a knock and run on doors.

This is really not a big deal. A friend of mine had some kids light his door on fire and run away and he lived in Wollongong.

Surely it's not the team, it's the hotel that should be doing something. But we know nothing really, it's just speculation at this point.

I could probably be wrong, but in every sport there is match fixing, could maybe another team wanted MVDP out of the race somehow and this is what they did? i don't know, i think it was just a coincidence that teenagers interrupted one of the biggest favorites for the race. like i said i could be wrong but sport fixing happens.

They butchered the guy's dreams with some dumb pranks. The parents need to be accountable for their shit kids running around a hotel in the middle of the night. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. But wtf was Team Holland thinking booking a shit hotel so far away from the race venue - makes no sense. I'm so glad the entire cycling community is fully behind MVDP in this whole issue.

If you are the mother of those kids, you should be hanging your head in shame in the disruption they have caused and your lack of supervision. They need to be taught actions have consequences. Instead of defending them, you should be examing your own parental techniques, and have a good look at yourself.
