    Went to LB on Friday and this was the primary reason. Was so great to see these incredible machines again after all these years. Was at LB in ‘82 which really got me into F1.

    I saw every F1 race at Long Beach and Las Vegas, so I was gobsmacked by almost every car shown in this video at those tracks or Watkins Glen in ‘77. The short and twitchy pre-ground effects cars were a blast to watch at Long Beach as those tiny little front tires danced around lock to lock over the uneven surfaces that linked the Queen’s Hairpin to the quick climb to Ocean Blvd and the pit straight. And I was hanging off the scaffolding underneath a grandstand so I witnessed when Andretti passed for the lead at the Queen’s Hairpin with just a couple laps to go. The roar from the seats above me was louder than the cars.
    I only saw Jackie Stewart’s car on the cover of Autoweek, the pages of Road & Track, or on ABC’s coverage of Monaco. I loved the Grand Prix reports by Rob Walker in R&T, where you really felt like you were hanging out in the paddock amongst your heroes.

    Thank you so much for sharing all these classic F1 cars! I remember the days when the F1's ran in Long Beach. I love the Indy cars, but these older classic F1's best describe the glory days of F1 in my opinion. Driving into downtown LB the sounds coming out of these beasts got your heart pumping.

    so cool👍 to see these classic cars alive today displayed & still used to drive & race, not in the scrapyard like a few classic cars like i've seen on the internet abandoned or dismantled
    living in the modern era thx🙏 for also telling us the history & info of these cars appreciate it

    Marshall you did a fantastic job of looking at all these beautiful classic F1 cars I wish they would show up every year there is nothing like them nothing against the current Formula 1 or Indy cars but these cars when you hear them run you know you're hearing things that will scare a sheep to death these engines this is the sound of Formula 1 especially the Andrea did Crusher has Alfa Romeo V12 when I was there on Friday that was the car to listen to now what we need to see Marshall or classic Formula 1 cars from 1995 to 2005 when we had the real V10 engines in the cars like Renault cars like Ferraris and the others thank you for the Fantastic coverage their Marshall .

    Excellent video Marshall. Thank you for taking the time to film and post. This video needs to be saved for posterity in the F1 museum/records as chronicling the eras. Fantastic to say one word. And I love and miss the air box era also. What’s not to like about having a jet fighter intake above your head. Very cool and good looking. Best paint for me is still the black and gold of the JPS Lotus and the Mclaren. Also the short nose area where your feet became the front bumper, cool looking, but definitely not the safest. I’m looking forward to the era when the driver becomes the stressed member and we bolt the engine and transaxle to their backside. Ha

    Amazing footage and your knowledge is absolutely unbelievable. The only tiny little detail you got wrong is the name of Jan Lammers' teammate at the Shadow team in 1979. That was rookie driver Elio de Angelis, and not Clay Regazzoni who drove for Shadow the year before...

    When you said good thing Keke was ok racing in that car, it instantly made me think of the giant elephant in the room around the 82 season and Gilles death while he was leading the world championship. For those who don't know, the Ferrari also had a very front forward drivers position pretty much everyone did by 82, Gilles was killed when his seat was ejected from his car after the front and rear split apart. There was also another driver killed at the start of the Canadian GP when it crashed into the back of a stalled car. Those extreme front forward seats were death traps at their worst and leg destroyers at their best.

      Riccardo Paletti perished in a fire on the pit straight in Montral Canada, at the start of the race. I had cancelled my plans to attend the race after Villeneuve perished in Belgium. I am so thankful I was not in attendance in Canada on that day...

    How do the modern Avon tyres compare grip wise to the original F1 tyres from the 70s?

  • @DanBlake3rd
    @DanBlake3rd Před rokem

    Simply outstanding. What an engineering history lesson.Did the ‘83 regs prevent GE, or just the side pod? -cheers

    • @martijnnagelkerken1737
      @martijnnagelkerken1737 Před rokem

      It wasn't that GE in itself was banned just that they wanted to nerf the extreme high downforce levels and resulting cornering speeds due to safety concerns. The (justified) fear was that if something like a stone or damage suddenly prevented the skirt from closing off the sidepod to the ground, the resulting loss of downforce would cause a major crash. So the new rules stated, flat bottoms to the cars, no skirts and whatever they could think off to get rid of the large tunnels under the cars. The result was there was no real need for a large sidepod as all stuff like radiators, etc could be packaged differently. They were only put in the sidepods as they were there anyway. Once that was eliminated, the aerodynamics (as understood at the time) and balance of the car dictated the new shapes. case of form follows function.
      A really clear way to see it in effect (pun intented) is to look at the cars from teams that didn't build a complete new car like Tyrrell with the 011. Compare the 1982 version to the 1983 version and you'll hardly believe it's the same chassis.

    Marshall P luv the documentary here on these F1 Classics. 1982 Alfa Romeo car is not period correct!
    In 1982 Andrea de Cesaris Alfa Romeo was #22 not 23!
    Pole winning lap time of 1:27.316
    Teammate Bruno Giacomelli drove the #23. I’ll swing by and show you my 400 asa Kodachrome photos of it from 1982 this weekend.🏁
