Astute vs. Virginia: Which Submarine is Superior?

  • A nuclear submarine is a submarine powered by a nuclear reactor, but not necessarily nuclear-armed. Nuclear submarines have considerable performance advantages over "conventional" (typically diesel-electric) submarines. Nuclear propulsion, being completely independent of air, frees the submarine from the need to surface frequently, as is necessary for conventional submarines.
The idea for a nuclear-powered submarine was first proposed in the United States Navy by the Naval Research Laboratory's physicist Ross Gunn in 1939. The Royal Navy began researching designs for nuclear propulsion plants in 1946.
Construction of the world's first nuclear-powered submarine was made possible by the successful development of a nuclear propulsion plant by a group of scientists and engineers in the United States at the Naval Reactors Branch of the Bureau of Ships and the Atomic Energy Commission.

What's the best cricket bat in the world? The one that Joe Root is holding. Ie. the difference between the two is such that the main difference will be the training and experience of the crew and captain.
In design, they're focussed in slightly different ways. Astute is designed for attack, it is born to find and destroy enemy submarines, infiltrate the defensive perimeter of carrier groups.. to so what subs do. The Virginia class is also excellent at those things but her focus is slightly shifted to being a littoral warfare machine, more land attack weapons, more room for storing special forces, that kinda thing. Every design is a trade off, a balance of priorities, and these two aim very slightly differently in their focus.
Two world class machines I'm glad are both on our sides. But as ever, it's the blood, guts and brains inside which make the real difference.

Small conventional submarine is quieter than huge nuclear submarine, it is is very hard to detect a modern electric propulsion conventional submarine, it can only play as a defensive platform. Nuclear submarine on the other hand, can go anywhere on earth with much much more speed and stay under water indefinitely, hence make it an offensive platform. Modern AIP subs can operate underwater for several weeks, and are much quieter than any PWR sub in existence while operatiing on batteries. However they have limited range because they consume LOX to operate their diesel engines which must be fed a supply of liquid oxygen. A PWR sub makes it's own air and water so it's range is only limited by their food supply.

Well the Virginia class will win firstly. So Australia will probably get 3-5 Virginias by 2030. Afterwards they will probably get a variant of SSN (R), the UK replacement for the Astute around 2040 built under license in Austrailia. Admittedly the UK used to have one of the best submarine fleet in the world....But with increasing competition, I wonder if it can keep up with the rest of the rising powers like Russia, China and India? Very soon Brazil, Mexico and Argentina too? Technologically it is falling behind? Its cost of production is also high as compared to its peers? And with the UK economy declining, it is also undergoing a defense budget constrain? But most important of all, its defense strategy is also on the wrong path. The days where Britannia rules the waves are long gone. It not longer has colonies nor trade routes to protect? So it does not really need a blue water navy. A blue water navy is expensive to build and also maintain. Instead it should focus on building a world class brown water navy? And channel whatever cost savings into research and development? This is what made the PLAN a formidable force today. Unlike the US, its defense budget/GDP is only 2% as compared to the US 4%? In spite of that, I have no qualms it can easily defeat the USN in the first and soon, the second island chain. But alas, the delusional British Ruling Elites cannot accept reality...They are still living in the fantasy world of the mighty Royal British Navy(RBN) that is now planning to sail to the Taiwan Straits to teach the Chinese a lesson...until it is humiliated. I am sure top British defense planners know that it is only a matter of time before the Argentinian make another attempt to take over the Falkland Islands by military force and it is gonna be a tough battle for the RBN? Why? Because Britain has been poking its nose into the affairs of Russia and China for too long. They will now arm Argentina with modern state of the art weapon systems to teach the British a lesson, just like what Britain is now doing in Ukraine?

Not sure what China is doing to be honest, except putting lots of hulls in the water. Lots of hulls means lots of expense over the coming years, lots of people to crew them, lots of money to arm them, lots of time and energy to upgrade and replace them. China is building up a huge cost for no gain. China really should have learned from history, instead of copying it.
