the engine itself is a fantastic, long lasting engine. The cross flow engines like that last forever as long as you keep proper 2 cycle oil in the fuel mix and keep lower unit oil full in the foot.
It's good engine for it's age. The mechanic mentioned the power head was probably a early, 90s but the rest was a 78. Either way they are great engines.
read the comments so know you changed the trigger. That was NOT the start problem. That lever is supposed to be up when cold starting. It is called the fast idle lever lol. Also, that toggle switch under the key is a choke switch. You also use it. You will find she starts better when you use them together. If the toggle is gone then more than likely pushing the key switch in while turning it over chokes the engine. That fast idle lever is there for one reason. To speed the idle up for starting and warmup 🙂
I agree with the lever. I'm just stating that I haven't had to use the lever since the trigger was changed. Just been pushing key in. I may have to use it on cooler months.
as a retired OMC DEALER YOU HAVE ONE OF THE BEST ENGINES EVER MADE now if you were smart you would have it tuned before you make statements degrading the engine you need to learn how to start it while your at it
If you watched the video, it blatantly shows at the time that I was having issues with the engine. Shortly after that video was posted I had the engine gone thru. The video was made to basically get some advice on the engine. There is another video afterwards that explains what was done at the shop. The engine ran flawless afterwards. One last thing for safety reasons you really need to figure out a splash well for the hole in the transom. The guy that cut it out is trying to kill you lol. When you run the boat and cut the throttle to slow down.. That wave behind you will catch your boat and flood the inside with water every single time.
Yep, I added a splash wall. Before the splash wall was added, if you backed down slowly wouldn't have a issue. But I def added one. And it helped prevent the water coming in.
Yes, your right. Just after that video. I took it to shop to have the foot seals replaced and mentioned to the shop about the hard starting. He checked it out and found that the trigger was going out. So her replaced the trigger. It runs starts and runs like a brand new motor.
I have same motor but 1984. Someone switched the throttle over to floor mounted hotfoot pedal previous to me. Does anyone know if fast idle switch lever is normally disconnected when this coversion is made?? I dont know if the fast idle lever is doing anything.
On the early models with the electric choke, you have to choke while turning the engine over, plus you need to have the warm up lever up. Have you had the air box cover off of the front? I had a customer bring me in of these early motors, and only one carb had the choke butterfly. All three carbs, atleast two need the choke butterfies. I heard the lean sneeze when you were trying to start it. Might clean out the carbs too, and the fuel filters on the fuel pumps.
Probably will have the carbs gone thru during the winter. Took the motor To the shop because the foot had alot of water in it. I mentioned to him that it was really hard to start. So it ended up being the trigger was going bad. Got it replaced. And it starts like a brand new motor now. Runs like a champ. I do agree on the carbs. Probably gonna have them gone thru before next season.
@@bud882can you explain more about the trigger that you replace! Maybe post a picture of the trigger. My friend has 120HP also has a hard time starting it. He just replaced the starter since it was bad. Thanks

The shop I took that motor too, tested it and let me know that the trigger was bad or getting bad. They replaced it. And the motor ran like a new one afterwards. Best money I spent on that motor. I no longer have that boat and motor. But I know people that own it. And it still runs great.
The link I sent you in the comment is for a 150 v6 . I posted it, so you would get a picture. You would need to check out online or find a manual to find a trigger for that 120hp you mentioned. Best of luck with it. They're great motors.
Yep, I had ordered a new starter and kept it in the cuddy. Just never got around to putting it on. But never gave any issues to make me need to replace it. Basically everything else ended up getting redone or replaced on it.
Since I made this video, I have noticed that it is hard to start when cold. But once it's started it runs like a champ.. does anybody have any knowledge on this?? Thanks in advance
I think that model has a primer solenoid, not a normal choke. If thats the case then you're not doing it right. You should hold it pressed while starting the engine.

Just got a 175hp model can’t wait to fire it up. Had to get a new ignition for it

That is the fast speed lever that you're pulling up on not choke push in on key while turning over will prime the motor will help start when cold

The throttle lever should be raised and push the choke in while turning over to start quicker.
Hold that choke while starting, not pulse it. As soon as you let it go its no longer applying choke.

It turned out to be the trigger under the flywheel. Dealer changed the trigger out. And starting run like a new engine.
