    I normally try to stray away from knockoff pens and Chinese pens, both for ethical reasons. But after having the Lamy 2000 and being thoroughly disappointed I gave it a go. It's a superior experience to the Lamy 2000. I use it every day without any trouble, except maybe it doesn't have a perfect seal and the ink might evaporate slowly if it's in the drawer.

      I know how you feel. To be honest, I bought this pen so I could clown on it, but I was pleasantly surprised at how well it handles. I do really wish that Jinhao would do more of their unique designs. This one at least has a few twists in the Lamy (which I also go back and forth on) like the color, gold hardware, nib etc. it’s not the most shameless copy I’ve seen. I’d love for it to be it’s own thing though. It’s certainly good enough to be.

    Hi Stephen. Jim from Madrid (a New York expat living abroad for the Love of my life!).
    I don't post much, but I watch your channel every week. So, thank you. I really enjoy it, for everything within! (Thoughts, artwork, fountain pens - of course-, as I said, everything!).
    Just wanted to share a few thoughts with you all in the channel...
    COVID has hit everybody all over the world... and most societies and countries have learned and grown with it...
    I see too.many comments within the US about people becoming for introverted within themselves... that is not due to COVID, it's just a reflection of how people in the US are changing into (in too many ways And for too many reasons)... I know... I live outside of the US bubble... And I am happy! Very much! Last time I was in the US (not too long ago) I felt like I couldn't breath! It was really weird... and I didn't like it...
    My advice to y'all over there... STOP over thinking things and... learn how to live!!!! You will see how liberating it is...
    As per your channel... it is great! Don't ever STOP!
    As per your artwork... I learn from your creativity every day... don't ever STOP!
    Cheer from Madrid!!!
    😁👍👍

      Good advice all around. Thank you for your thoughts. I have also spent some time outside of the US, and I wish I could somehow give everyone the chance to do that. The perspective change is incredible. It made me re-examine my politics, my ideals, and my culture on so many levels. Hope you are well in Madrid. Spain is one of the many places I would like to visit before I die.

    I'm still waiting to be disappointed by any of my Jinhao's, and all are failing to disappoint me.
    I love em!
    Nice vid Bud.0

      Thanks! I’m surprised to say that I have had the exact same experience. Some people comment on my videos saying that they god bad versions, and I wonder if I’ve just been lucky? But I keep getting the exact same luck over and over again, so… I guess not.

    I own same pen with 03 nib (supposedly thinner than EF) and it is smooth & wet from start. The line produced visibly thinner than my EF x159. No problem yet with drying despite not used for a week.

    • @stepheninks

      I’ve had a similarly pleasant experience using this pen. My nib needed a bit of tuning after I finished filming this video, but I kind of like the tinkering aspect of this hobby, so it’s still a win for me. It has worked wonderfully ever since taking my brass sheets to it.

    I have enjoyed the Jinhao 80 enough to buy several to give to friends who were not yet into fountain pens. I hope Jinhao will offer a greater nib selection. The Lamy 2000 is an engineering triumph and a true joy to own. Lamy also offers glorious nib selections!

    • @stepheninks

      I should start giving out cheaper fountain pens to friends to let them try it. Most of my family is sick of hearing me talk about pens though. Haha.

      My Lamy 2000 has gotten little to no use. It does look interesting in the pen case. Have gotten
      greater enjoyment in writing with my Jinhao 80.

    thanks for the look at this pen! I have two for drawing and they are great. Mine have the 03 nib which i think you would really like as well it feels very precise and about as fine as a Pilot Kakuno xxf but smoother than the one I have.

      @stepheninks  Před rokem +1

      I know, right? I was actually thinking about a recent Platinum pen purchase I made, and how similar this nib is to that one. Definitely a great find at this price point.

    • @stepheninks

      I always sort of look sideways at people who complain about “cheap Chinese pens.” There are quite a few brands that surpass other offerings 3-4 times their price. I have 2-3 Jinhao pens that are in regular rotation beside gold nibbled pens. This one goes in that rotation now too.

    Great video as usual. Good message about social anxiety, I can try to blame the pandemic but I've always been awkward in that aspect. Love my Jinhso 80s though I never gave the nibs a chance. I bought Lamy nibs from Goulet and they are super nice 👍

      I’ve always been awkward too, it I used to find social interaction ab annoying part of life. It’s only when it wasn’t a part of my life anymore that I realized I actually need other people.

    Love the message of social anxiety at the end. I’d totally hang out with you anytime haha. Also I’ve been very surprised how solid some of the fountain pen “dupes” are. I’ve currently loved using my Asvine and majohn A1

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  Před 7 měsíci +1

      I really love those pens too! I think some of them really do offer something that the original does not. I guess what I really care about is whether or not it’s a good pen. Everything else, let the lawyers and businessmen figure out. I just want a good pen that I don’t need to take out a loan for.

    I can't remember about the feed, but the nib on the Jinhao 80 is removable and you can mount Lamy nibs. My all black Jinhao 80 works really well, but can dry out in a day of no use, my blue and gold 80 tends to dry out in a few hours of no use, my red and gold one is somewhere between. The QC on the 80 is so crazy variable. My black one was nice and smooth and reliable.

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  Před rokem +1

      I wondered about the nib. It doesn’t look like the same size. Interesting how they copied the design of one Lamy, and the nib of an entirely different Lamy? Very odd. I know that there are sometimes issues with pens at this price point. I guess that I’ve just always been lucky. I do think that some of the nib problems on this lower end can be worked out with just a set of micro mesh and a few brass sheets. That investment has been a game changer for me.

    • @archivist17
      @archivist17 Před rokem +1

      @@stepheninks I am very happy with my Jinhao 80, and I took the opportunity to swap for a Lamy Left Handed nib, which makes it absolutely excellent!. The nib cost as much as the pen, but both together were still less than many many other 'budget' pens. It's a real winner.

  • @unknowncrash1
    @unknowncrash1 Před rokem

    My 80 dries out after a week of no use. That's my only gripe with it.
    On the contrast. The cheaper jinhao 166, writes well and doesn't dry out (weird). Though, the screw in that pen might rust considering how cheap it is, so I guess one has to replace it.

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  Před rokem

      I think if you buy pens in the sub- 20USD range, it does well to invest in some brass sheets and micro mesh to tune your nibs. I have had problems with my Kaweco Sport, Platinum Preppy, and Pilot Kakuno, when the tines just got a bit too tight. A little bit of work there turns an unpleasant dry writer into a gem. I’m pretty sure that the quality of a pen like this isn’t super consistent. I guess I’ve just been really lucky.

  • @fabiosilvadesouza5364

    Glad you made this review. This little pen cougth my attention since I discovered it! I wonder if all the 80 EF nibs are consistent and will make marks this extra fine. I bought an Jinhao 86 and the X156 and the EF is not and japanses F, for sure. Even less an EF. Can you compare this nib with others Jinhao?

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  Před rokem +1

      I can compare it to my Jinhao 85 and 51a which both have an ef nib. This one is definitely finer. The 51a and the 85 have a more Western (Parker, Schaefer, etc) interpretation of EF.

  •  Před rokem

    I have several excellent pens at €10, but none of them is Chinese, so I'm kind of surprised there. I love how smooth Lamy but its nibs tend to be very thick and I'm a tiny letters/paintings person. :-P Also... *I love Colorverse* I have Somnium and some others from the mini collection, and they are so good. In the same line of nice inks for drawing, have you tried Inkebara? I use some of their inks for washes.
    Thanks for the video!

      Yeah, I know. I’ve had some issues with focus from just learning the right settings for my camera. I hav wit mostly sorted now, but there are a few issues like this on this channel. I really only have so much time to film these things with how hectic my day job is. Sometimes I just let the errors be.
