Well that definitely won’t be the case with the price. Toyota has taken advantage of their good reputation in that respect (price-hiking) for several years now.
even if price isnt outragous, dealerships will markup the hybrid by easily $20-30k

Not really. Would appreciate much more honest discussion about the terrible capability of the rear seats. Toyota engineers need honest feedback, not a praise fest. They did a lot of good work on the truck, but the only way to improve is to be critical of weak points. The rear seats need to be scrapped. Eliminate the 4-door configuration. Make the Xtracab configuration the standard for all trim levels. For those who balk at this suggestion, I ask you; how often do you honestly have passengers in the rear seats?

Toyota and Honda’s hybridization strategy has always been the smarter, more logical play from an overall conservation perspective. Mandating and forcing everyone into a battery EV only solution is ludicrous and illogical at any point in time. More and more people need to push back on this one size fits all strategy and fight the lobbyists that are bribing the politicians in this direction.

I was interested in the 4th gen Tacoma before Sheldon’s interviews. After seeing him here and on TFL. This pretty much will be the only truck we consider buying.

Now for this same conversation about the 2024 Land Cruiser 250. In the past people were willing to accept that the engine in that kind of vehicle wasn't extremely powerful or fuel efficient (for a gasoline engine) if it was sufficiently powerful and above all reliable. Now that the turbo 2.4-liter 4 cyl. hybrid gas motor is the only choice, and now that these output figures and fuel economy figures have been claimed, I don't think potential customers are crazy to ask if durability and reliability will be sacrificed.
I'm glad that there will still be the 6 speed manual transmission. My 2020 Tacoma TRD Sport, 6 speed manual just got totalled out in a head on collision. I think having the heavy duty grill guard on the front helped, possibly to protect me more. 5 airbags deployed. Truck I impacted with was a Ford F350 Superduty, lifted. Other guy said his truck was totalled, as well.

Another great chat, always learning something. I think they got their hands well tied together while trying to make every major region of the world happy with their regulation. it really feels like an industry always walking in a very thin line. In the US they will have a more opened hand regulation but in europe and china it´s going to be electrification yes or yes, no matter the consequences. Always great to watch these informative chats.
With this one in particular, I learned a lot as well . . . I felt it was a 'master class' on how cars are really developed.
I loved the question about weights. Soon we will driving vehicles as heavy as a Peterbilt.
I noticed a while ago that cars keep getting heavier. They're easily another 1000 lbs more than they were when I was young. That's the weight of about 5 extra people in the car. I had a 1988 Chevy Beretta with a 2.8 liter V6, which was around 2800 lbs and weighed somewhere between a Fiat 500 and a mini cooper.
I would love to ask him if the power train in the Land Cruiser has been developed to last 500k miles just like previous generations of the LC.
That is the over engineering Toyota was doing in the 90s early 2000s not now
I'm replacing a 2000 Durango and looking for a Tacoma. I don't mind a v6 in a small truck. But a turbo, hybrid 4 cylinder won't ever be an option for me.
Hearing him explain what they needed to keep that turbo reliable is a real turn off. They added a turbo, then added more stuff to keep it cool. Just more things to fail. Simpler is better. That is the opposite of simple. Looks like I need to hurry up and get a '23 v6 while they still are for sale.
Yup. Just picked up my 2023 SR5 4x4 last Monday. The reliability is already there and I know it's a vehicle that's gonna last a long time.

This was a terrific interview, great questions are being asked and explanations are very detailed. The only question I haven’t heard asked or answered yet are with these new hybrid systems are what does consumer repairability look like or are they even considering that at the end of the day.
People who care about the technical’s are normally very mechanically independent. I am more worried about if I can repair the vehicle myself or with things like the hybrid motor am I forced to bring it to the dealer?
(Please no safety remarks. As the industry is moving towards EV’s I would like to know if we could repair them ourselves. This is very important. It is up to the consumer, to be aware of the dangers of working on EV’s just as you should know the basics if you’re going to replace your own battery that you can get at Walmart)

I really believe that hydrogen will be the “new” diesel propulsion. I think Toyota sees that too. I really want to see the day Toyota leads the way in hydrogen propulsion for semis, trains, boats, etc.
There's zero chance hydrogen becomes the new diesel.

@@Misfit_wk2 currently there's an issue with storage and production, maybe we're close to it. But no matter who or when you ask they'll always say "we're less than 15 years away from it"
@@Misfit_wk2 The cheapest solution always wins. Hydrogen will never be cheap. It just takes to much energy to make and compress. Then you have to store and transport it. More energy. You have to put more energy into it that you can get out. The physics on that won't change. It's much more efficient to take that energy and put it directly into a battery. You go a lot further.
When one looks as the whole H2 production, transportation, and use cycle, there is no CO2 reduction. Just another "Green Initiative" that is misrepresented and essentially does nothing beneficial for the environment.

I'm assuming that start-stop technology will be on the tacoma and if so how will it affect the longevity of the turbo?. Can start-stop be turned off with the push of a button and stay off so we don't have to re-push the button every time we go for a drive.
Start-stop is the bane of my existence and its gas savings is so minimal that it doesn’t even make sense to have it.
Turbos are well suited for electric motors that are isolated from the heat of the engine and devoid of exhaust heat. That would compliment the low end torque fill of the drive line hybridization. 25:02
Great video! Really hope all the reliability talk shines through in reality. I am on some Tundra forums and am seeing many issues with cheap interior fit and finish and the notorious seat plastic cracking. Also creaks and rattles, wind noise etc. on new vehicles. But, more importantly I have seen multiple Tundras on tow trucks with blown motors. This doesn't exude long term reliability. Also, please put rear AC vents in trucks costing this much. Living in the Southwest it's a necessity for dogs and people. Cars much cheaper come with them, and it's frustrating that if I'm going to spend 45-50k on a midsize it is lacking. I've been Toyota loyal for nearly 20 years. I'm hoping to continue that tradition.
Calling BS. You haven’t seen “multiple tundras on tow trucks with blown motors.” Maybe you mean you’ve read about this on forums, but you can’t say you know it’s true.
You know, I used to be a Toyota man for 30 years and no More Toyota’s for me. Dealers have Certainly taken advantage their customers with charging ridiculous prices over MSRP. I have ordered several Toyota vehicles and when they get to the dealer, the dealer suddenly said oh something happened to your order oh really oh I get it. Someone was willing to pay more. I get it supply and demand not if you ordered one and the dealer sells it from underneath of you. The Toyota dealers have completely disgusted me .Yes if you can get a Toyota vehicle that you want good for you. Toyota used to be a reliable vehicle at a affordable price, not anymore. I’m done.
Was it reliable in the tundra no hurt sales
Yes, it’s a given that Toyota is on top based on durability, reliability, and build quality. However, the market cost adjustments from some dealers are ridiculous. Appears Toyota entered into an agreement with distributors and dealers many years ago that they can’t get out of. Is there going to be a solution to this problem?
If their sales take a hit, an ongoing hit, it will for sure effect change.

@kkranker Absolutely. Businesses are all the time feeling out profit margins and what customers will pay for a product or service. People paying over MSRP is a dinner bell to the manufacturer/supply chain to just raise the MSRP.
Can you ask him if we get can a 2WD truck that is similar to a 1989-1995 Pickup and first gen 1995-2004 Tacoma? Those were the classic small Toyota trucks. The current 2WD’s look like 4WD and are too high off the ground.
I believe they’re going to make a small Toyota soon called the stout! Hopefully they offer a base model that’s lower and 2wd

Most likely since the battery is under the back seats and the electric motor is between engine and transmission.

What I heard was this man really never worked on what makes vehicles reliable.
Since Toyota has shifted their R&D to the US for the Tacoma and Tundra, we'll never see the reliability as previous gens.
My 23 Tundra has so many flaws that I'll be getting out of it next year. I'm not alone, but it just goes to show that the brand isn't focused on reliability anymore.

First/second year models, always wait a couple of years to let them work the bugs out. Buy year three or later if you can. If you look back in time at other Toyota models there was usually a drop in issues in year three. I learned that many years ago when I bought a first year Chevy. I had a sheet of paper with all of its problems on it and I had to turn the paper over and use the other side too.
I once worked with the Japanese on a product and they made just as many mistakes as we in the US did, the difference was that they kept working the bugs out of the product. In the US the bean counters keep you from resolving the issues because they think short term instead of long term about cost. In other words, they don't want to spend the money to resolve the issue, but they have no issue spending the money later on warranty claims...
I’d never by 1st or 2nd year of a new gen
I work on turbocharged airplanes from the '60's. All of the semi-trucks hauling 10's of thousands of pounds back and forth across the country are turbo charged. It's more than proven, they just have to be built well, which Toyota does.
Comfortable seat is everything to me. Nothing else matters if I can't stand to ride in the thing. Most seats today are way too hard, and do not come out far enough towards the knees for support.
Is he the same guys for Landcruiser? It would be great to do the same type of interview/discussion with the 2024 Landcruiser dude.

When is the T100 coming back? 🤔 The Tundra is too big and the Tacoma's bed limitations make it less than ideal for hauling. A new T100 with an 8 foot bed would be perfect! 🤩
I had a 4Runner in 1996 same motor transmission as Tacoma and it got better mpg and pulled better than my 2023 trd off-road Tacoma 27 yrs later and they haven’t anything but have less emissions. Company’s serve oil and gas industry not there purchasers. All about money.
Is the L4 going to be strong enough for truck applications. GM has the 2.7 built for a truck. Not for cars. Is Toyota just putting in a car engine into a truck.
The power number sounds good, but a turbo and a hybrid system? That’s going to be expensive as hell to fix when either goes bad. No thank you. That’s why I bought my 2022 Tacoma.

Thanks for the great in-depth interview. I was eagerly waiting to purchase the new Tacoma but I think Toyota missed the max towing mark with 6000/6500#. Almost all the new travel trailers around 5000# and under have put off-road or Beast mode axels on their rigs which upped their GVWR rating to around 7500#. These are legally towable with the new midsize 2024 Ford Ranger 7500# and new midsized Chevy/GMC 7700# but not the new 2024 Tacoma. I guess I'll have to reluctantly pass on the Tacoma .
6000 is the absolute max you would want to realistically tow with a midsize truck anyways. Just because its rated to tow doesn't mean you actually should. If you have a 5000 pound travel trailer you need a full size truck because the drag created by the trailers massive front end might be legally too much for the midsizers anyways. Nobody realizes that is part of the trailer requirements. Also midsize trucks lack the weight to properly handle a trailer that weighs more than itself. The colorado would not be a pleasant experience towing 7500 on a windy day when the trailer weighs almost 2000 pounds more than it.

Even if base price is decent, the distributors and dealers will put 15k of add ones plus a 5-10k mark up.
Over time I really wonder whether the repair cost on these small engines will be higher than the fuel savings. Not considering the climate impact. Which is a separate debatable issue which I won’t get into.
Also, they NEED to update the tundra already again! No tow hooks? Come on Toyota wtf? And Toyota is seriously missing out on the raptor competition. They need to make a crazy tundra with a supercharged 5.7 and a Tacoma with a supercharged v6 and then I’ll take them seriously again. Toyota thinks they know bear but they really aren’t listening to their customers nowadays. Until then, I’m holding onto my 2022 Tacoma as long as I can.
Ford doesn’t care about there truck after the warranty is up. That’s why they spit out new junk every year. I just had a 17 and 19 f150 now I’m back in a Toyota. The fords were lemons.
They have NOT been listening to their 4X4 market stateside since dumping the best purpose built 4x4 at the end of 1997. Now we have soccer Mom IFS junk while the rest of the third world gets their best and most rugged 4X4’s. Fact.
Drop the turbos an put a better engine inside it an the frame is questionable too on it long life spane. An where are the grab handles to get in an out of the truck an the side bit by the shifter should be taking out , what is it perpose an the air vents too seem to be out of place aswell an dose it have heated seats an heated mirrors too?. An on more thing, the front dash screen seems out of place an

Considering that my 17 doesn’t even like to tow a small boat or 3 to 4K travel trailer I wouldn’t use it for anything like that.

We will know the truth after two years in the field. Replacing the most reliable and durable V6 with new tech 4 cylinder is a bold move.
Most vehicles these days are reliable.
But how easy are they to fix when things go wrong and at what cost, that has become the biggest issue.
Toyota drivers are spoiled. They expect 300k or more out of the vehicle on an average with not that many repairs except maintenance. What he is saying is that Toyota is mindful of customer fears about turbo chargers.
Noticed he didn’t provide confirmation that new Tacoma’s with turbos are reliable, just that there’s new technology available to reduce heat. This to me is confirmation that reliability/dependability is “to be determined.” Yes you can incorporate a robust cooling system, but the cooling system is yet another component that can go bad. I think Tacomas will still be reliable but nothing close to the level as older generations.

Feedback: offer the TRD Offroad and TRD Pro with an Xtracab or access cab configuration. Time for everyone to sober up and acknowledge that rear seats in the 4-door models are terrible. People only buy them because influencers praise the trucks. Influncers praise the trucks out of fear of being shunned from manufacturers. They get around this by asking viewers to provide honest criticism that may seem harsh. Yeah, eliminating 4-door variants of the Tacoma may be harsh feedback, but everyone knows it's true, they're just afraid to say it. Even Toyota knows this, as evidenced by their own promotional video for each trim of the Tacoma. In that video, the rear seats of 4-door models were conspicuously never discussed or shown. On the other hand, the video dedicated a meaningful amount of time showing off the PreRunner Xtracab, and how the space behind the driver and passenger seat can be used. The PreRunner's Xtracab is the perfect type of cab for every trim level. Do us all a favor and scrap the 4-doors on every trim level. 4-door variants are worse than useless, they're costly in terms of weight, MPG, and capability. Yeah, that last one, capability, should hit home with Toyota if, as you say; quality, dependability and capability are your mantra. I challenge Toyota to question the capability aspect of your own mantra, specifically with regard to the back seats of the Tacoma. Bonus if you're able to turn the Xtracab into an access cab. Toyota, please do this. You know it's the right move for the 2026 model year. I commend Toyota for being receptive to feedback and would appreciate a reply directly from Toyota. We here this reliability stuff but tundras keep failing. Still think the methane run engines are the way to go. Hope toyota didn't drop that project
Next time ask him if they go all hybrid how do they get the cost so there is no difference in oricr vs a reg motor. Also Elon has one model. Why so many variations of the same car? Would that not make production cost go down. Also why tachometer why mode drives which do very little other then add cost. Remove some of this stuff like paddle shifters and out that savings towards cost reduction on hybrids. Ask him please. Thanks
V8 horsepower, V8 Torque paired with 1952 longevity from overstressing a smaller engine to overperform. There IS NO Replacement for Displacement.
As long as it last 50k miles without any issue that’ll leave me stranded, that’s all it matters to me.

People are snatching up the V6’s .. turbo charging introduces a whole host of reliability problems and won’t buy them.
unfortunately its all about the carbon foot print with all auto makers because of the new strict EPA rules-these new models look great but will not be as dependable as the out going models
I bought my first Toyota at the end of August 2016. A 2017 Tacoma. Now has over 117k miles and it still feels new. If Toyota keeps the quality they will out sell all of the other mid-size trucks hands down.

We don't care as much about emissions. The EPA needs to back off and let you engineers work.
You need to rethink all the bells ans whistles. I had a 2019 tacoma for 3 years I sold to my son. I NEVER used the infotainment system for anything. I do not need one in my truck. How much value did that add for an owner like me. I need a speedometer, tachometer, oil pressure gage, and transmission temp gave and a voltmeter. I do not even need a radio. Heated seats and steering wheel? Why? A less tricked out interior is what I would like in my Tacoma. Gosh, I do not even need four doors on the thing. I need value in the engine and the drivetrain. Not more cup holders.
I've had Toyotas and Lexus' for decades. Still have my 2004 Tacoma since new. I'm also an early adopter of BEVs. I have to say I'm very disappointed with the BZ4X for example. I can't remember the last time Toyota put into market such a rushed and half-baked solution. I have since gone the Tesla route and have a Rivian coming. They are light-years ahead in many categories that matter to be as a buyer. Not suggesting Toyota go the full EV lineup, but the effort there and in the eco system that supports the Mirai is just sad. As a fanboi of what Toyota stood for, i hope something drastic internally changes or Toyota will be no more if at least one or two leading class BEVs aren't included in the lineup.
Toyota Dealerships are killing the brand, markup prices are too high and overprice add on accessories. There is no way to purchase a vehicle for the MRSP. Its time for them to sell direct to consumers.
As a owner of a new 23 trd off-road 3.5 v6 I hope they fired who put these gutless no torque motors in these vehicles. It’s a shame. There engineers need to go and drive what poor choices they create. It has 4 cylinder power with v8 gas mileage

I'm sorry but there is no option for a v6 I just think a four-cylinder motor with turbocharge it's just not going to be much in the way of longevity with that motor and I'm going to be paying over fifty Grand to get a smaller motor and it's not just Toyota they are all going to this 2.7 l and not only that you're not getting the gas mileage they're just giving into the EPA and to hell with the customer!! I own a 2004 Tacoma 206,000 miles still runs great.
Fun fact: Tacoma is NOT a western Hilux
If there's one thing I would ask this man to do at Toyota, make a Tundra raptor fighter, and make just this specific version, a V8. The market is out there!!! No one will buy a "crazy" version of the truck without a v8. People want the sound. The people who spend lots on the crazy trucks (raptor r, TRX) want to hear a V8. They are not going to think rationally and buy a turbo 6 hybrid even if it makes more power and gets 40mpg. They are irrational. IF they were rational they would not spend above 50k on a truck anyway.
One thing for sure, this truck is not affordable...
A lot of talk and hand waving, but no real data. Without any quantifiable real world data, it is doubtful that a 4cyl turbo motor in a Tacoma is going to last as long as a normally aspirated 6 cyl motor that is in the 3rd gen Tacoma. Recognizing that Toyota is trying to keep the cot of the 2024 to near the 2023 cost, the next issue will the dealers be marking these 4th Gen's up 3 to 5 k$ above MSRP.
Maybe you could ask the engineer about the 3rd Gen gas cap. There is a great debate about it. Some believe that design is so the cord that holds your gas cap is meant to be looped around the two prongs that hold the door shut when filling up so your cap doesn’t just hang on the fender. Others believe that is not true and that Toyota simply did not put a gas cap holder integrated into the door like other Toyota models have. Please end this debate for us.
I love that Toyota is flipping the proverbial middle finger to Brussels, Washington (and Ottawa) by producing products antithetical to the 100% EV regulation. These new products you are developing make more sense to me as the amount of energy packed into petroleum - pound for pound vs electrification is far greater and it will take 50 years to get battery technology anywhere in the realm.
They never had to sell a Taco this much. They know we all hate that 4cyl turbo engine. That engine will be the downfall of the Taco. I know I'm not buying any.
No one knows how this will work out, first years of the third gen Tacoma was horrible, same with the frs/86

Why not just turbo the V6 that was in it and don’t charge that stupid amount of money nobody wants a smaller engine and smaller engine equals more stress and equals more breaking
I Have owned Toyota most my life. Tho having to work 2 jobs to do so most dont make a hundred thousand plus a year.. Just a thought, cut the wages of the Co's the ceo's presidents, vice presidents and so on. Bring the cost down ware the lower middle class can afford them. Toyota needs to stop using cheap Chinese steel, 87 pickup that the bed complex rusted off of and a 99 Tacoma that the frame rusted on half both were always garaged. Now driving a 2103 Tacoma, wife has a Highlander. Mechanically superior.
Toyota doesn't do anything half a$$ed. I worked for them. They put 7 coats of paint on every vehicle and submerge them. When the new tundra was released, one of them blew an engine and Toyota had it shipped to Japan and they changed the design of the engine. They use the highest quality wiring harnesses in the industry and the vehicles are designed to last 5 times longer than any other manufacturer. Toyota invests a million dollars an hour into r&d . There's no other company like them on earth

Toyota needs to bring a heavy duty pickup truck with Hino diesel engines. Hino makes some of the best diesel engines.

I hope Toyota figures out the Turbo issues that most, if not all manufactures have fail, (by using plastic 3d printed in high heat concentration area). I do not buy turbo cars because of their reliabilities and cost factor after 5 years. Ask Honda, how well their turbo engines are doing in cold climates? Hybrids IMP is the best comprise, but adding a turbo too. Not sure, ask Volvo how is their reliability and durability's are doing with their multi tech setup.
Problem is the new forced induction engines DO NOT get better fuel economy! I would never get rid of my 3th gen Tacoma to get this stupid 2024 model!
I hope the hybrid is better that what they did in the Rav4. They have issues with cable corrosion. Even in the 2023. As for towing well they missed the mark. They didn't list to most. They did better with pay load Cost is not reduced so that's a lie. Look at the price. We have to remember this guy is marketing. Nothing on fuel economy has been mentioned anywhere. So what I gather from that it will be marginal at best. The gears play a big role. 14 minutes....puke turbo lag on the hybrid by the sound of it.
