KID CREOLE & THE COCONUTS - Live At Rockpalast
In the beginning there was a vision - the vision of a multicultural carnival without stylistic limitations, the vision of a colourful theatre with different characters, exuberant joy of life, irony, a sense of humour and sophistication.
Kid Creole & The Coconuts were founded in the early 80’s by August Darnell who had already been successful with setups like Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band or Machine. With his alter ego Kid Creole however, he unfolded his creativity in full.
Together with Andy Hernandez alias Coati Mundi and the Coconuts, three ladies including Darnell’s former wife Adriana Kaegi, he orchestrated a breath-taking mixture of Latin pop, funk and an exaggerated theatrical performance settled somewhere between art, candy-cane coloured kitsch and a great self-ironic gesture - perfectly choreographed and timed.
Had their first two albums “Off the Coast of Me” (1980) und “Fresh Fruit in Foreign Places” (1981) been widely appraised already, the big breakthrough came in 1982 with the album “Tropical Gangsters” containing hits like “Annie, I’m Not Your Daddy”, “Stool Pigeon” or “I’m A Wonderful Thing Baby”. Both Rockpalast recordings capture exactly this creative peak.
Aside from the band’s exhausting club show June 3, 1982 at the Satory-Säle in Cologne it was especially the magnificent performance during the night of October 16 to 17 as part of the eleventh Rockpalast at Grugahalle, Essen that brought their major breakthrough in Europe. In fact the show was such a huge success that the dates following tour had to be transferred into venues four times the size: Overnight, Kid Creole & The Coconuts had transformed from an acclaimed club band into one of Europe’s most wanted live acts. Darnell’s idea had become reality. Although Kid Creole & The Coconuts were primarily convincing on stage and their shows were stage-managed to perfection there had never been an official live album to this day. More than thirty years later we are finally catching up on that! - Hudba
Hair was big, music was phenomenal; kids I give you 80's music!
Until about 85 music was superb, so much quality and talent.
It is all a perfect union between music and show those girls are very good especially for a 64 years old person like me well!
A warm greeting people ❤️🌹🤓🇮🇹
saw it 1982 on Rockpalast tv and dance the night alone - 16 years old and full of coconut girl dreams!
Saw them about this time in the uK, probably the best live show I've ever seen
Esas chicas me han elevado la moral!!
This is feel good music, makes me want to get out of my wheelchair and dance the night away
The Kid and his fellows/ coconuts could really bring the public to heights of extasy. Never forgot the night I enjoyed them💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾
They never got the fame they truly deserved.
@Java Monsoon I was the only one in my circle of friends/acquaintances that new about them. This was Toronto mid to late 80's.
5:13 seems there is so much smoke in that hall that the audience cannot see the girls on the stage

One of THE BEST live bands I've EVER SEEN!
I caught them mid 80s at a Westside NYC pier. Absolutely awesome. One of the best shows ever. And those Coconuts - hot cha cha cha!
You better believe it the 80s was soom of the best music ever made I am 81 and I still love it today’s music can’t come close 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Was the 80s better than the 60s old boy?, I'm 60 now had some great times in the 80s 🍻
Too Much Luv comes Off/Out as perhaps 'Counterfeit', aka Fake_Luv? Who Do YOU Luv? Show ME yur Money, Baby. But Do It Before You Check Out. OK?
this was a way underrated band, i saw them three times, I was in love with one of the Coconuts, how could you not be?
Kid was successful but he deserved much more. No one like him has been able to blend Latin, Soul and Funky in an explosive mixture. Unique artist with overwhelming movements. I love you Kid
except Cab Calloway....:)
Couldn't agree more!
Steely Dan are a good shout. If you like this I'm sure you'll love it. Peace.
Greg Stewart ummm Steely Dan are more jazz influenced.
It's junk.
Of all the versions of "Stool Pigeon" that I have seen or heard, I think this is the best. Kid creole and the band were rockin', and the Coconuts were burnin' down the house! Oh, to go back to the Eighties for just a few nights!
WOW! Just stumbled on to this. Knew about Kid but guess I missed out on some really, really good music. Luv ' dem coconut gals!
Everything spot on. Stage, lighting, wardrobe, the hats even! The energy, sound, tone. Just pure raw talent doing a live show and sounding like a studio recording. The 70's 80's early 90's man we were so lucky to have grown up with the best music ever!
40+/- years ago and we still have the best music. It will never happen again. Sad but we have all these videos to watch.
Miss those days
We Be like In the Groove? But IT actually has nothing to do with what years they 'Did If', Do Yu Understand? Music is IN Time, but Not Of Time.
When the central riff begins, you are spectacularly trappped--it's a masterpiece. I had friends tell me about them during the 80s and I didn't pay attention. This piece alone deserves the Grammy, everything. What a mesmerzing, complex, beautiful piece of music....
Yes sir
Kid Creole is without a doubt one of the best bands to ever hit the planet Earth. Like the one person said : " The furst band to blend funk latin soul blues rock etc. Great band. Love them to this very day. 🎷🎸🥁
All I can say is that they were brilliant, amusing and unbelievably talented.
Word Bro, Squared :-) Maybe even Higher? The Band. The Vibe. The Music? But Whattabout 'That Groove'? We Be Feelin' IT.
One of the best things about CZcams. You stumble on something like this you listen to when you where young 40 years ago. Still like it !

He has performed on Broadway, in film and television, and has an extensive background in studio session recording.

J'ai vu ce spectacle à Fréjus et à la même époque . C'était encore plus grandiose avec des décors années 30 . Un souvenir inoubliable !
Fabuleux !
Now, THAT's a ZOOT! lol and the backup singers are in a league of their own!
The rhythm guitarist is tight, loose and funky. The drummer is subtle with the bass drum. The Bass player locks in and still flourishes.
Going on 40yrs, folks, and still a better live show than probably 80% of what you’d pay inflated prices to see today - and pre auto tune. One helluva band - especially love the brass section - hot cha cha cha !

Not a single smartphone blocking anyone's view. Good times.
Be sure that someone was taping the show ;)
Sí pero eran profesionales, no tontos por el camino!
Watching Kid Creole live was one of the best gigs I have ever seen, and I have seen all the greats.
Ive felt the same. I saw them in Hollywood (The Palace) early 80's. They could swing
Bullshit
Just discovered it. Oh boy, this is awesome. I love it. The girls, of course. But you also have to appreciate the brass.
Saw KC and the Coconuts a couple of times around this period and they were definitely one of the most enjoyable bands I ever saw, more like a party than a gig!
Kind of reminds of a cross between Morris Day and Cab Callaway
@@kennethrussell1158 I was just wondering the same. Some of his performance is very reminiscent of the great Cab Calloway

Saw them mid eighties NYC west side pier. If this was a cemetery the dead would have gotten up and starting to dance. Best show ever.
Kid Creole & the Coconuts owned the eighties, everywhere except the USA. They were the hardest working live music act in show business. Only now can Americans see what they missed being dumbed down by MTV and its mindless programming.
I met him at a recording studio years ago, real showman, real nice fella. Loads of fun.

I am back for another listen.. Brilliant. These girl singers add so much to the show.. Brilliant.
Now this is one fantastic live band..saw them in approximately 1986. This is a band that should still be touring in 2023...extremely extremely underrated...I absolutely positively can't dance to save my life...but this band automatically made me dance...and that's how good they really were...
I remember watching this on live German TV waaaay back in 1982. It was great then - it’s still great now!
I saw them at Pinkpop Holland in 1982. The whole crowd was dancing. And I could not stop staring at the Coconuts.
Purfection . . . one of the greatest live performance songs, and performances of said song . . unsurpassed.
Ha, I remember seeing these cats play around this time and being blown away by their stage presence. 😃 Also a young Bass player I remember being extremely impressed with how funky the female Bassist (Carol Coleman?) was. They had 4 fiber optic palm trees custom made for their full stage setup and in the late eighties I walked into a dance club that was located in the square of the little city of Sonoma California and was surprised to learn from owner after I asked him if he had his palm trees made to look like the ones I had seen years earlier on stage with Kid Creole? He was surprised that I recognized them and said they were actually the same ones and explained how he knew them and he bought them from the band to untilize for his vision as a permanent installation in his club on both sides of inside entrance walkway leading to dance floor. Cool huh 😎
Yep, Carol Coleman... she was exactly what this music called for.. Fun fact: Kid C. played bass in a band that was precursor to KC+Coconuts - the Savannah Band, see here: czcams.com/video/BdtENUX3nNk/video.html
So he knew damn well - Carol was THE ONE for the job 😍
I will die happy watching this. God Bless Kid Creole & The Coconuts...

Believe it Or Not, Many of Us are holding Our Collective Breath's for the Future of Music, Before We Check Out? Ne c'est pas?
Definitely a cut above many. Their sound is lively and fun to listen to. They bring real entertainment and good music which makes them a class act.
Kind of reminds me of a cross between Morris Day and Cab Callaway
Allegria e spensieratezza al ritmo del funky.Questa e ' la musica dei Kid Creole and Coconuts.
A great live band. No question they would be in demand in europe. The energy they are putting out is incredible.
I caught 3 nights of this tour. 2 in Edinburgh. 1 in Glasgow. As a 16 year old boy I was as obsessed by the coconuts as I was by August and Coatimundi. (He's small, he's bald, but most of all he's adorable) I was word perfect with Off the Coast of Me, Fresh Fruit, and Topical Gangsters, standing in the front row in my zoot suit, two tone brouges and 8 panel cap. In a world of 80s electronica, that band was a tight as two coats of paint live, and the coconuts' dance routines were equally as tight. Without a shadow of doubt, KC&tC were the musical and visual highlight of the 80s.
❤❤❤ saw them in 1982 in Sheffield while at University- brilliant live performance… great memory
One of best fantastic performance thatI see in my life
Absolutely wonderful. Wonderful song, wonderful performance.
Good grief the guitarist is like a magician, 👌😆 And the babies are HOT like flames ! 💪🤩 Yeah u go girls ! ✌️🤓 Adios ! 🏇
It's been 40 years, but this video still carries a positive charge. I was 17 then and now I'm 57, it seems impossible to me. I would like to meet the three girls, the coconuts, who will now be happy ladies in their sixties.

One of the most under rated band of the 80's perhaps history of music...
Rarely I agree with this "most underrated" shlt - but here, you are absolutely right !
@@tomasvanecek8626 Absolutely! Criminally under-appreciated. Great time for music in NYC...Talking Heads, Blondie, Laurie Anderson, The Roches, and so many more.
What I love today is being around certain people where you mention the name Kid Creole and the Coconuts, and they look at ya and grin with a look that says, oh yeah. That's when you know you're in the right place..
🚬👓...
I was fortunate to see them perform live in 1982 at The Palladium in Hollywood and their performance/show remains in the top 5 acts that I have ever witnessed. True 'gift from God' entertainers.
Musical performance at its absolute finest.
Just 2 days ago, after many years, I put on the platter their Tropical Gangsters album... I know them through and through, I even watched THIS Rockpalast show LIVE on TV back then. The Kid was on UK radio this morning. Said he woke up one dayu and his zoot suit no longer fitted so he hung it up!

Coming advances in AI and VR will analyze old performances videos in REAL-TIME, re-compute and recreate the entire venue, sound, audience and performers in extremely hi-res surround 3D, allowing you to continually move yourself within the audience or onstage with the performers, and experience the performance in VR as if you were there. Just give us another 10 to 20 years to make it happen.
