      Im sorry to say this but what pakistan ? A part of Pakistan is Iranian like Peshawar ( Pashtuns ) and Makran ( Baluchis ) the other parts like Sindh , Punjab , Kashmir and .... are Just former Hindustan , but since muslim population of India migrated there they seperated their selves from Hindustan ( land of Hindus ) and called it as Pakistan ( land of cleannees since there is no Hindu overthere ). So basically Punjabis , Sindhis and Kashmiris are Just Indians who seprated from Hindus or sikh punjabis , sindhis or kashmiris while taking Iranian Baluchi and Pashtun lands which British empire added to British India Raj. And trust me it created lots of problem for local people , im from south east of Iran with Turkish origin but Persians Baluchis and Pashuns all livr together in there. And according my Baluchi friends many of their tribes are located in country of Pakistan which didnt exist before and Iran lost its border to British Empire during treaty of Goldsmith 1880s i guess.

    Some corrections:
    1. Gandhara was the name of the region covering the Peshawar and Swat river Valleys, not the name of the city itself. Purushapura served as the capital of many kingdoms that ruled Gandhara, including the Vedic Kingdom of Gandhara, the Kushan Empire(until the conquest of Mathura), and the Indo-Parthian Kingdom.
    2. The White Huns/Hephthalites gave patronage to Buddhism, it is not clear what religion the ruling class followed (could be Zoroastrianism, Buddhism or even Manichaeism among some) but there is no evidence of Buddhist persecution during their reign.

    A lot of Pashtun/Afghan Nationalists try to claim Peshawar because it was apart of Afghanistan for less than 80 years over 300 years ago. If that wasnt enough they believe because Pashtuns live there they should join Afghanistan yet these ignoramuses don’t know the native ethnic group of Peshawar are Hindkowans/Punjabi’s and Peshawar was still apart of Punjab until 1901. Even other areas in “KPK” such as Hazara district have predominantly Punjabi populations not Pashtun ones. Only the tribal areas (Waziristan ect) were actually apart of the Durrand line treaty. Afghan president Daud Khan (who was a Pashtun nationalist) even recognised the Durrand line in the 1970s.
    Therefore Afghanistan has no claim or right to “KPK” .

    I gotta ask with full respect, I'm a Syrian and I understand this problem with separation of ethnicities, but didn't this always happen with any empire throughout history? Didn't the Persians and Ottomans control divided lands based on military conquests that lead to separation of groups? I'm pretty sure lines between pre-colonial empires weren't drawn on ethnic, religious or tribal basis either
    Now you may argue "but colonialists drew these lines in agreement with each other not through war" well yeag they weren't brothers and sisters, they were rivals united by a common enemy and each of them tried limiting what other got in these agreements

    • @HikmaHistory
      @HikmaHistory  Před 4 lety +6

      Firstly, can you email me please - hikmahistory@gmail.com
      Secondly, I get what you're saying but I'd add a couple of things:
      1 - Back then, central authority was not necessarily as invasive as it is now. This is vital because if I'm Pashtun and I want to live a Pashtun way of life, then I don't really mind that much who is in charge (an Iranian, Turkic or Indian Dynasty) as long as they let me live how I want. I would argue that prior to the modern-age, governments were more lax in that regard.
      2 - Modernity has had a strange effect on notions of Identity with the surge in Nationalism and Wilsonian Self-Determination has made it so that more and more ethnicities want their own sovereign nations.
      Does this make sense?

  • @fammazali
    @fammazali Před 2 měsíci

    At 5:34, you claim that the majority of the Peshawar city's population were Pakhtoons before Ranjeet Singh's era started. But when one refers to the historic architecture of the walled city (and the area names) or to the native Peshawar community, there seems more Persian heritage (possibly from the Nadir's Shah Era). Mostly native people from Peshawar claim their ancestry to the mass migrations from central Asia, present-day North Afghanistan (Non Pakhtoons), and Kashmir, rather than to the Afghan/Pakhtoon dynasty. Even till as late as the 1960's, there was a Hindko (non-Pashto) speaking community in abundance within the walled city, identifying as 'Peshawiris/Peshoris', rather than Pukhtoons. So I don't know how can one claim that that Pakhoons were in dominance in Peshawar during early 1800s. You're doing a great work on history, thanks for that, and keep it up.

Also Peshawar existed long before Afghanistan came into being. Moreover people of Peshawar democratically voted to join Pakistan in a referendum against the wishes of Gandhi & Bacha khan. I genuinely think peshawar belongs to afghanistan. The people of peshawar resemble more the people of afghanistan and nothing like the other regions of pakistan. Let alone the pashtu language which is the main language of afghanistan. But pakistan has held claim to this land for so many generations that the current people identify and are embeded in pakistans culture.

      You do know that historically peshawar was never inhabitated by a majority of pashtuns right? It is only jn receny times that pashtyns from the country side moved in. Pakistan is a multi ethnic county just like Afghanistan. Afghanistan litteraly refers to ethnic afghans but yku have baloch tajiks uzbeks etc. As far a resemblence goes. Kashmir from Gilgit baltistan look the as (maybe even more caucasian) tgan the pashtuns. And lastly pashtuns chose in a referendum to side with Pakistan in 1947. I get your point but even if we look from a pashtun perspective. Pashtuns have economically and poltucally achieved more in Pakistan than Afghanistan and 70% of all pashtuns live in Pakistan.

      @@biryaniboy3378 yes pakistan does have a mix of ethnicities but that is due to pakistan being formed in 1947 from various lands of afghanistan and india. Whether peshawar has done well under pakistan is irrelevent to the argument. I think upon reading the land was lost by afghans in a war which is quite recent in historical terms. Majority of taliban come from the peshawar region and being protected by the pakistani goverment is an incentive for the people there.
