Some really interesting and intelligent ideas put forward here by Ian: the concept of innovation vs. imitation; and, is the notion of recording a definitive collection of work that important any more? - ie. aspects of art. His Soft Focus interview with MES is also one of the best interactions with Smith. Well done, Alexander, too: an excellent discussion (and tee shirt!).

Fascinating discussion of technology, mediated communications, and McCluhan's techno-catholicism

I saw Make Up 3x in their prime, when they were releasing a 45 every week. They had this tone and energy, they tore the roof off every time, minds blown.
90’s indie rock had a lot more life left but it got slayed by cardigan wearing Magnet Magazine editors, contrarians that only liked something if it was lifeless and terrible. That’s what gave birth to cigarettes and leather jackets again.

Very funny. There was a lot of interesting music from the 1990s. Most of it was ignored unfortunately. It was all very underground. I saw many bands at Brownies in the 1990s with 25 people. The Makeup were bigger than that. They still play shows today, and are probably bigger now than they were in the 1990s. While most bands who were on the cover of Magnet are non existent now. I didn't realize that Magnet magazine existed post 2005. Magazines now are just an advertisement.
