Ulysses by James Joyce Chapter 13 “Nausicaa”
James Joyce’s famously dense and unconventional modernist novel Ulysses follows the advertiser Leopold Bloom as he goes about his day in Dublin, Ireland on June 16, 1904. Although the novel’s plot is deceptively simple, its structure, style, and literary and historical references are incredibly complex. Leopold Bloom’s quest through Dublin is loosely modeled on Homer’s Odyssey-each of the novel’s eighteen chapters (or “episodes”) roughly corresponds to a book from the Odyssey. But it would be misleading to take this parallel too far and assume that every character, event, and theme in the Odyssey maps directly onto Ulysses (or vice-versa). Episode Thirteen: “Nausicaa”

I also recently read books by Redd Kross, Steve Wynn and Orenda Fink.
Classic Ulysses: "It depicts the scene from Homer's Odyssey in which Ulysses (Odysseus) resists the bewitching song of the sirens by having his ship's crew tie him up, while they are ordered to block their own ears to prevent themselves from hearing the song." Internet Joyce Ulysses: "In the Sirens episode of Ulysses, we see Bloom tied up at the Ormond Hotel, tucking into a meal of liver and potatoes, and being distracted by singers in an adjacent room, while Blazes Boylan journeys towards Ithaca (Bloom's home at 7 Eccles Street) for a sexual rendezvous with Molly." Internet Cold Mountain: During dinner, the group gathers around the table, raucously eating a meal, laughing at the others’ doings; in the sound design, Minghella has chosen to include, for a brief second, the sound of a bird’s shriek as the women are laughing, thus tying this group of tempters to the “half-bird, half-woman” Sirens of Homer. During the meal, as they are drinking home-brewed alcohol, Junior notes that Inman’s “eyes are gone,” linking Inman’s current intoxication to the quasi-hypnotic state the Sirens impose on their listeners. Throughout this scene, Lila and her sisters are extremely sexualized; one sister erotically rubs Veasey at the dinner table, and we later see him and two of the sisters naked and having sex in the smokehouse; additionally, Lila urges Inman to “ride her all the way to China,” an offer Inman seems to take with aghast interest. appscholar.blogspot.com/2011/05/sirens-song-homeric-siren-descriptors_05.html

SHE never ceases to amaze! Goddess in her heart! I would love to have her drop her hit “People Have the Power” song again! We have always loved her, but we need her to sing that anthem again! 💐⭐❤♾️

Explain the funeral…I’m obviously dead so I’d like it mentioned and explained again. 👻
I can read for you…we should make CZcams with your commentary, noi?
Nice interview! I’ve worked with Piper before, in the mid 2000’s; she’s so talented, has a wonderful eye and great direction…a natural in everyway ❤She also took a few candid photos of my beloved soul cat, Olive, which remains dear to my heart. I loved being a part of the early years as a stylist in the music scene shooting with her in my K-Town/Los Angeles flat. Great interview, thanks for recognizing her well deserved talent! Cool book, and cover, too ❤ Cheers!
3:30 Re: Strategies for song writing. Was it just ignorance of songwriting and music conceits that lead to "postpunk/indie" music in late 70's/80's/90's? Wasn't it a conscious rejection of music cliches and formalism? Songwriting in the 50's/60's was so much more sophisticated because writers could unapologetically borrow from an encyclopedia of blues, jazz, folk songbook traditions. By the late 70's, so much had already been done with the blues form, it seemed hopelessly stale.
Those people either couldn't play or just created an idiosyncratic style based on their limited skills. Many punk bands didn't do covers because they didn't have the chops or were tone deaf.
@@AlexanderLaurence for sure, but for many, there was no desire to learn traditional chops. It doesn't take that long to learn blues or folk idiom. For better or worse (usually for worse) musicians that followed Wire and PIL and Joy Division, the idea of writing a 12-bar blues, or soloing a blues scale was something to ridicule.
Buy a kidney, Mc-gnowww!
I listen to BJM everyday. What a treat to hear his wisdom!! The Chicago guy doesn't seem in tune with the psychedelic movement. DoomTown is here, there, and everywhere. It's not just hippie acid waterheads in San Francisco anymore. 🎉

To be fair miles Davis's guitar player in the 80's played a 12 string phantom...but I get you anton!
I pray for your phones mic
I was right next to the speakers and it was loud
What genre is this?
Of course everyone is white. Y’all are so flavorless
Love BJM but Anton is so wrong on cvid. Not saying it’s not real or anything but the only reason he gets as sick as often as he does is because of his years of cigarettes, drugs, alcoholic and absolutely 0 conscious exercise. The rest of us aren’t going to live in a medical surveillance police state just because Anton lived an unhealthy life and drank pfizers koolaid.
It's a little early to say who's wrong or right on COVID. I think at the time we were talking about music venues opening up again in 2021 and 2022. I never got COVID myself and we are almost 5 years in. Neither did my family. Many of my friends got Covid. Why that is O am not sure. It's possible that Anton has a weak immune system?
ends too soon!

Fascinating stuff!
Some really interesting and intelligent ideas put forward here by Ian: the concept of innovation vs. imitation; and, is the notion of recording a definitive collection of work that important any more? - ie. aspects of art. His Soft Focus interview with MES is also one of the best interactions with Smith. Well done, Alexander, too: an excellent discussion (and tee shirt!).
