    Baseball works because the game doesn't advance unless you do something. In basketball and football, it doesn't matter if you don't give any effort and the other team scores, because you get to go on offense right after they score. In baseball, if you don't give any effort and the other team scores, you don't get to go to the dugout. If you never get 3 outs, you'll never get to bat. The game naturally incentivizes effort. And as a fan of a bad team, I like that each team is represented. I would be a little less interested if I wasn't going to see someone from my team

      The other reason is that one game of baseball doesn’t have a ton of risk of injury. Pitchers are only pitching an inning max and guys aren’t running into walls at full speed. All Star baseball games work because it can still be very competitive game without having guys be scared of missing the rest of the season of the season with injury

      @@wizardoferror9942I agree as well. MLB, despite being considered boring by a lot of people, are the only league out of the four major professional sports leagues, that does the All-Star Game correctly. As mentioned above the OG comment, they do it right because it’s an actual game of Baseball. You have to get three outs to move to the next half inning. You have to actually try. If you watch last years All Star Game in Seattle, The American League made some great defensive plays in the first inning. Adolis Garcia made a great leaping catch off the NL MVP Ronald Acuna Jr. And then the very next at bat, Randy Arozarena made a leaping catch of his own against Freddie Freeman. It’s the one All Star Game I actually look forward to watching every year

    I get the argument about wanting the best players there at the mlb all star game but when I was a kid, one of my favorite things was watching whoever was the representative for those terrible Devil Rays teams play in the all star game. When your a bad team you don't get much to celebrate during the season and you are quickly pushed out of the overall league narrative. I think it is essential to let every fanbase feel a part of the all star weekend by having a representative.

    I think the NFL pro bowl is almost there with the skills challenge. I want to see it turn into an mini olympic games so like who is the fastest, who can throw the furthest, who can kick the furthest, have kicks with smaller and smaller width of goal posts, who can jump the highest? That sort if stuff. Its just when to have it. Before the SB is bad because everyone is focussed on the that. Mid season? Before the season? Im not sure.

    Flag football for the Pro Bowl isn’t going away. It’s an Olympic sport in 2028 so the NFL will try and lean all the way into that. The American team will also probably be a ton of NFL guys. That’s not changing anytime soon. I also think having a Pro Bowl in the summer would be tricky if it’s full contact bc that’s before the season starts. You’re between a rock and a hard place. You have it at the end of the season, a guy gets hurt, he’s waived before the new contract year starts in March. You have the game in the summer, a guy gets hurt, he’s cut from the team before final rosters are set. And he’s just owed whatever injury guarantee is a part of his contract.

    for MLB: move the Futures Game to Monday or have the MLB Draft take place on a Monday as the actual MLB All Stars have a day off to get ready to participate. Tuesday have media day in the afternoon then Home Run derby at 5pm. Wednesday play the actual ASG. No more of this All Star starting pitchers who pitched on the Sunday prior to the ASG can’t play, as why you move the game to Wednesday. Thursday is day off for all of MLB (travel day back to their ballclubs). & yes… no more AL & NL ASG jerseys during the game (as it’s a money grab for MLB). Have them wear their home/ road unis. NHL should honestly keep the four division format but have the stipulation of the winner of the two divisions in the same conference get to have their representatives have home ICE advantage in the conference finals. Then the division winner of the entire All-Star tournament between the East and the West gets to have the entire conference representative have home ice advantage in the Stanley Cup Final. You can't just add more incentives to the players.

    Great video! On the note about having one player from every team represented: that might actually be the place where we insure both teams have enough pitchers. If every team has at least one pitcher selected, if only just to sit in the bullpen, we're talking about at least 12-16 extra pitchers per roster. That game likely won't run out of pitching. Everything else you said about the MLB All-Star game was great. Totally love the idea of going back to team uniforms.

With that being the case, just turning the All-Star weekend into a fun event to showcase players and have fun is the right thing to do, no matter how much it annoys football purists. In regards to the NHL’s every team gets a player rule, that one is kinda tricky to deal with.
    Not just having strictly the best players at the all star game has actually damaged some players reputations, for example Nick Backstrom will be a lock for the Hall of Fame, yet he only made 1 all star game because he played his entire career with Alex Ovechkin.
    On the other hand if you don’t give representation to every team, the ones not being represented simply won’t watch.
    In an ideal world every team does just have a all star worthy player, but it’s just not reality. This year we saw guys like Oliver Bjorkstrand, Boone Jenner, Tomas Hertl, Frank Vatrano and Tom Wilson, who are all good enough players, but definitely didn’t have all star worthy seasons.
    During a season of crazy high scoring, not a single one of those I just mentioned was even close to a point per game, but somehow it’s meant to represent the best the league has to offer?

  • @valpix7007
    @valpix7007 Před 3 měsíci +1

    Honestly? The thing with All-Star Games is that the games themselves don't really have a reason to exist in an era where so many stars play together and have highlights accessible on CZcams. The novelty of seeing guys you normally wouldn't doesn't really exist anymore. Maybe the novelty of team mixing, but....ehhhh, plenty of genuine all-stars play together so that's not as appealing either. Plus NBA, NHL, and MLB all have international play (Olympics, WBC, FIBA WC/Eurobasket) which allows for more intermingling between stars.
    The ASGs serve more of a purpose as a business summit than anything. It's the same thing that killed E3: changing trends and attitudes made them kinda obsolete.

    I've said for a long time that if I ever owned a team, the first thing I'd do is offer all my players a one million dollar bonus to NOT show up if named to an all-star team. AND I'll pay the fine if levied by the league. I'd much rather have my guys resting (if mid-season) or not risking injury (post-season) on a game that brings me no benefit.
    Just get rid of all of them. Their time has come and gone.

  • @DaAuraWolf
    @DaAuraWolf Před 3 měsíci

    I’ll add this for a bit of variety… but I liked what NASCAR did with its All Star Race back in 2023 when they returned one of its long forgotten tracks in North Wilkesboro. The format was kinda getting stale with it being back to back weeks at Charlotte and we didn’t get anything different until COVID forced its hand to move it to Bristol for the year and then Texas got it for 2 years before the current race at North Wilkesboro. Hopefully they’ll continue this track revival series for their All Star Events since it’s a return to roots kind of event that was long overdue.
    As far as other games go, Pro Bowl should be back to after the Super Bowl 100% to have the best of the best play while NHL should go back to a normal East vs West since the fantasy draft era of these events is over. Making Three Point Contest the sole event would be great too since it would parallel it to the Home-Run Contest. Though here’s a wild idea to through out, maybe the NBA should give it a shot where you have NBA All Stars play against WNBA All Stars and make the game be played in late September/Early October between the two seasons? Would be a more interesting game than the current product.

  • @bmac4
    @bmac4 Před 3 měsíci +2

    So my honest take...is the players have gotten too good. Their job is to win championships. An all star game is something you have little to gain from and everything to lose. Sports have gotten about optimizing every last bit out of athletes, and as we've seen with pitchers any bad throw or comebacker can end their season. Same with hockey and body checks, or the NBA with any awkward cut that can just tear an ACL. The NFL is such a violent league that playing the game after the season is over still carries the risk of an injury that takes so long to heal it impedes on the next season. And you're an all star, you're too valuable for your team. Playing at an all star level often means pushing yourself to the limit.
    In terms of high risk low stakes games the only comparisons in the league are like the preseason games, but those serve a purpose as a warmup and a testing ground for players. It's safe to say if you're an all star though that you're plenty developed, warmed up, and pass whatever tests you'd need to earn a roster spot.

      @JJFT235 Před 3 měsíci

      It’s an interesting time in sports and athletes are at a different position now compared to generations past.
      Back in the day like the 50s-70s, players were barely payed acceptable wages, couldn’t really move teams without their original teams either wanting to trade them or just outright releasing them, had to work extra jobs for extra income, had to get in shape during training camp, and All Star games were a focal point to raise interest in the respective leagues.
      Nowadays, athletes can earn money they would never have dreamed of. And it’s fair because if you think about it, revenues increased significantly over the years and before free agency, owners would see most of the revenue shares. Now with unions and players getting more value with sponsorships and exposure outside of the sport, their value as players increase. Nowadays, athletes are mostly in shape by the time training camp starts. They work hard in the off-season to maintain shape or develop their skills in order to not fall behind. Not only that, science and analytics have been involved in sports. What’s optimal to reduce injury risk and enhance the team’s and players’ potential?
      So many new factors to think about as a team and as individuals as you competition in long and intense regular seasons that require you to be at your best. Not to mention, especially in the NBA, ring culture has sorta skewed perceptions of certain players, which affects how they approach the regular season.

      I doubt it. It’s not because these guys just want to be lazy. These guys are playing like this because they don’t want to get injured. Nobody in the NBA wants to miss the second half due to an injury in the all star game and no NFL player wants to spend the entire offseason, especially if it’s a free agent year, rehabbing an injury from an exhibition game. As a Cubs fan, if the Cubs players weren't on the All Star Game Roster I wouldn't watch it---additionally fix the Home Run Derby. One player from each team facing off against each other. Maybe I’m unique-but why do we need All Star games at all? Just give the dudes a week off, the seasons are ridiculously long and we don’t need these useless dog and pony show exhibitions.
    If you think about it, in the past All Star games functioned as a way for 1. The top players to get national attention 2. Extra revenue for the league. What functions do they have besides that now? Top players are already famous celebrities that everyone is familiar with. There is wall to wall coverage of all the games and all the gossip/rumors now. Unlike in the 50s/60s when coverage was sparse and the All Star Game could be a showcase of your talent and great source of publicity.
    You can still name players to All Star Teams, but just have it be like an honor just like all the other awards at the end of the season.

    Am I the only one that thought the flag football pro bowl wasn’t so bad? The players seemed to be legitimately having fun and they ran full speed, which made some of the faster players fun to watch. Without the threat of getting tackled and with only having to avoid getting their flag taken, the players were always running. The pro bowl always should’ve been that way and that plus the skill challenges each being worth a certain number of points made it interesting and honestly probably the best the NFL could conceivably do with the Pro Bowl.

    Perhaps a super unpopular opinion but I actually don't hate the new pro bowl week, it just isn't the best for television viewers. I can imagine it's a much different experience if you go in person. They have embraced the quirkyness of the skill events and have the understanding that they can't actually play in pads, personally I think playing an all-star game months after the season is weird with regards to relevance. As far as TV goes, I think the flag game is good mindless television given the circumstances, plus good marketing for the NFL since guys aren't in helmets and you can see their faces. I think they could benefit from adding more sideline interviews, perhaps a Manningcast format where you eschew the main broadcasters for a rotating cast of that year's players who aren't currently on the field. Maybe let Pat McAfee host it since it's on ESPN - sort of like a love podcast. They could even move it to streaming, which would allow them to speak as candidly and explicitly as they do on the podcasts we all watch and love - likely some good content there with hopefully some guys you don't always hear from in interviews etc.

Although there is fanbase bias like the blue jays, I think baseball fans recognize who’s good more than other sports- hence why two pirates started the asg in 2021 despite the team being in last place (both guys deserved to start)

    NBA All-Star game and evey other ASG for that matter is easy to save.The winning conference/division splits 20k,earns home field advantage and an automatic bye to the divisional round (whichever team with the best record).Not only would the players have a reason to play harder but with postseason implications on the line there's no way any player would want to try to compete. I personally think that this would be the best way to save every All-Star game minus the NFL pro bowl i actually like that it's flag football. But since this is a video about how to save each All-Star game what i would with the pro bowl is have the game mid-season,pads only, NO HEADHUNTING (any player that does aim at the head will not only be disqualified both the player and the team would be fined) same rules apply as above.
