35" Pizza Cutters on My FJ Cruiser - New Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT 255/85R17 Tires

  • Hey everyone! Welcome to another episode of LET'S FJ!
    Today I record my thoughts and impressions as a switch from 315/70R17 BFGoodrich KO2 All-Terrain tires to 255/85R17 Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT tires. I'm excited for this change since the wider tires have always been a hassle to run without rubbing but I've always heard that there are benefits to running "Pizza Cutter" tires (narrow off-road tires) and I figured they would be a much better fit for my TRD 17x7" wheels.
    Hope this video helps you out and here is a link to those tires:
    www.mickeythom...
    One goof in the video is I say the wrong weight for the tires, I should have said 64 lbs for each tire.
    Thanks for watching, liking, and subscribing! Comment below if you have any thoughts or questions!

    Always preferred a narrower tire off-road. More psi applied to the ground for increased grip. I run a 255/80/17. Love the idea of the 255/85/17 and hoping some other manufacturers jump on board. Would love some C and D rated options to shave some weight also. Looks great!

    • @FJX2000_Productions
      @FJX2000_Productions  Před rokem

      Thanks for the input! Yeah the increased weight on the smaller contact patch must be the ticket!

    • @TxHylyner
      @TxHylyner Před rokem +1

      @@FJX2000_Productions yea I think so, especially on a lighter vehicle. Allot of people think wider contact patch, more grip… but in something without a ton of weight behind it, it’s just not the case. They might help you “float” over some terrain, but it’s definitely not ideal for “grip”

    • @lloydmiranda44
      @lloydmiranda44 Před 4 měsíci

      Hey man you said the tire of the weight are 42 lbs something for that size 255 85 17? I think your wrong that size is 63 lbs each tire. And yhe 285 70 17 SL they are 44 lbs.

    • @storm5013
      @storm5013 Před 2 měsíci

      Actually that's not even right. Tire contact patch is determined primarily by outer diameter, and tire pressure. A test was done where two equal diameter tires of 255 vs 305mm width were set at the same pressure and had their contact patch surface area measured and they were almost identical. The patterns were different though, the wider tire had a more horziontal contact patch, while the narrower tire had a more vertical contact patch. Due to the same tire pressure but narrower width, the narrower tire will flex more than the wider tire, so an equivalent amount of tire will be in contact.

  • @jlara3252
    @jlara3252 Před 3 lety +51

    if its wearing out in the center like that might want to lower your psi, its probably what is causing that problem.

      crazy I've run this combo before without centering. It's from running tire specs air pressure and manufacturer recommendation. With this setup have to run a little lower pressure. The new tire will make it less likely to center though. He can run recommended pressures. But it's not a wrong combo.

    • @overlandPNWGX

      It’s a thin wheel problem. Also a PSI problem more more that the tire is too wide for the wheel.

      @@ragscrazy9683it’s 100% from running the tire pressure too high. By lowering your pressure it will not push out the center so much. Have you ever tried a chalk test????

    Nice ride! Definitely an anti hydroplane tire. I bet you can hit some deep puddles at 80 mph without hydroplaning. I wish they would make these 10 inch wide in 37 or 38 diameter which I will be buying. Also that is an insanely light tire for a 35 inch at 40 some pounds! which should improve high speed offroad handling and mpg. For comparison this exact tire the Baja Boss AT at 37x12.5xR17 which is next size bigger on diameter comes in at 80 pounds!

    Looks supercool. I do not want to go 35s with mine, 33" I recon is maximum. One guy in my country uses ST Maxx's 255/80 R17s that is about 33" tire. The most important is he ensures that in an FJ with a 2 in. lift you do not need to BMC nor using spacers with these rubbers (in some countries spacers are not allowed).

    Mounting wide tires on narrow wheels has been used as a poor-man's beadlock for years. Typically you would reduce the inflation pressure to get the treads to wear even, but that won't work with TPMS unless you can tolerate the warning light on all the time. Thanks for validating my decision to skip the fender flares. 🙂 The new tires would sit about flush with the body without the flares. I'd like to see it without spacers and flares. I like the antenna mount on the back door hinge, who sells that?

      So my 2008 Trail Teams Special Edition originally came with the 16” TRD wheels and 265/75R16 BF Goodrich KO All Terrain Tires, and because of that there actually is an additional sticker in the door jam about special inflation instructions for the TRD wheels and that’s where the 46 psi comes from. But once you change the tires to a different style or size, and especially if you do what I did and change the 16” TRD wheels for the 17” TRD ones I have now, then those manufacturer psi suggestions are thrown out the window. So since making this video I just run at 30-35 psi

    Leave the bushwackers on and take the spacers out and you will get less mud on the side windows in sloppy weather? I always look at the practical side.

    You should be running lower psi with larger tires. Even on the street. And yes , the tires are way too wide for the rim. My 265s are the absolute Max for my 7.5 inch wide rims .
    255 85 is almost exactly a 34 inch.

      Just to make sure you have 285/75R17 tires currently? Not 285/70R17? If you do have 285/75R17s, then you might be just fine with the 255/85R17 size, but it could be close, hard to tell until it is installed.

      @@GamingHouseCinema so I would recommend checking out my video about how to fit all different size of tires of FJs, it will answer all the questions you could probably have! And I also have a video series explaining all the ins and outs of lift kits. But in general you should be able to fit a 33” tire on a 3” lift without much of a problem, even if that is a spacer lift. But these tires in the video are 34” so it makes it a bit more complicated. Stuff like a bmc becomes more necessary
