What Were We Thinking? | Skinny 35's on a 2017 Tacoma!

  • We made the jump and had some #kenda #klevers installed on our truck. What better way to test them out, then on a 44 mile adventure up to, and around the mountains in Big Bear to so some #snowwheeling.
    If you are familiar with the #Tacoma, you know how much work it can take to fit 35's .While there are lots of pros to switching to a larger tire, there are just as many cons. We selected the Kenda Clever R/T to have less front wheel clearance issues on our truck.

    The pizza cutters rock!! I've gone down the research rabbit hole of wide vs narrow tires a few times. I've always favored wider tires until my research led me to an article on the benefits of narrow tires. It was perhaps the most authoritative and convincing article I've read on the subject. I of course have lost the bookmark but cheers to your pizza cutters! I plan to go a little narrower on my next set of tires.

      After doing our research is when we decided to make the switch. We have been very happy and the truck feels right with the combination of the 5.29 gearing and the 35" Kendas! Can't wait to see how they look on the Runner.

    Back in the early 70's I had a 1969 f250 running old school 7.50-17 bias ply. If I recall, they were 36 inches. Worked really well in snow That's a pizza cutter.

  • @MyProjectsFL
    @MyProjectsFL Před 2 dny

    After doing all the research I opted for the pizza cutters too, I had 265/70-17's on my 4Runner and decided instead of going to the popular 285/70-17 (32.8"), which are actually a half inch smaller/shorter than the 255/80-17's (33.3") I got, they are also cheaper, in theory better on the trail and road and are slightly....very small difference easy on fuel mileage and steering components. One of the best reasons was, other than sliding and pinning the inner fender liner flush with the outer fender...the way Toyota should have made it to begin with, no other adjustments was necessary. I have even considered going to 255/85-17's (34.6") if I liked these when they wear out, but I really think that would require a gear swap, as the increase would be substantial.

    Nice! Great hear that you decide to go skinny! I’m on skinny 33 in my 80 series LC and love it! See many Taco with humongous 35. Skinny offer less stress and less mass rotation.

    I am over in 🇳🇿 and i run a 265/75R16 currently (which is just shy of a 32x10.50R16) on my 90 series and i go almost everywhere guys go with 35's i do very well in the sand as the contact patch is better on a 10.50 than it is on a 12.50 unless your running super low pressure and beadlocks
    When i can save up for BTF's 4.5" long travel kit ill get Kenda Klever MT2 35x10.50R17's as they are the best value in a narrow MT to many people buy tires with their egos and do no research on how they actually perform! Lol 😂

    • @OpenRoad4Two
      @OpenRoad4Two  Před rokem +2

      In the back, you’d probably be ok, but We had rubbing with 33’s and three inches of lift. We had to do a lot of trimming and body mount chop/relocate to fix most of the rubbing. Still get occasional rubbing at full lock to the left and under load.
