    I used to live in the lower 48 where frost was often not an issue,.. up here in Alaska the driven posts would be jacked out of the ground first year.. your fence would look like Dr Suess was involved.. Frost jacks fences.. in order to make a fence stay perfect for basically ever we use Helical piles .. just drill them below the frost line.. 8 feet deep and then your gold.. its all about LOCATION location location ..

    There are a ton of folks who lost fences due to the fires in SouthEast Nebraska and 20000 acres burned near Halsey, NE. If a contest could be held on this unique land…you could also see a win/win for ranchers as well. Something to consider. I know that sandy soil in a unique terrain has its own challenges. Would be fun all the way around and likely could get some great promotion and donations. Just some thoughts. Love to learn. Thank you for making quality content.

    Hey Josh I been pondering this question for awhile. When would I need to use concrete for setting fence posts and do I need to use treated lumber? I notice that in just about every video i ever see about livestock fence they never use concrete but they do on privacy fence. I'm new to this all and have been watching your videos and learning lots. Thanks!

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  Před rokem +2

      when ya dig a hole and put in a privacy fence...it's necessary...when you drive posts and build bracing systems like this it isn't. Driving the post into virgin ground saves you from having to use concrete. Two totally different grades of fencing my friend. Typical privacy fence isn't as strong and the posts are simple 4x4 posts. You need treated posts for anything that contacts earth or will be exposed to prolonged moisture

    I was hoping to see the different methods for anchoring that post at the bottom of the hill and for that matter the other bracing solutions.
    Since the winners morticed the board fence to the end posts why not notch the center post so the boards could be supported and flush with the side of the post.

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  Před rokem +1

      tons of questions about this being a waste....this is teaching, learning and growing professionally. The fence materials are typically re-used or re-sold, however they are donated by the sponsors of this competition and educational weekend so it's not being wasteful any more than a medical book is wasteful to a medical student...it's all part of this career path my friend

    • @farmfencesolutionsllc7804
      @farmfencesolutionsllc7804 Před rokem +3

      We leave the fences up until next year’s Fall Fence Forum so that we can see how they aged. Once we tear them out, the posts and wire are saved and donated. Generally those materials will go to a natural disaster area like a tornado or hurricane, but we also use them for local groups and continued education. This year, we will build a new goat facility for the local FFA chapter with many of the materials from last year’s event. Of course, we do destroy our fair share of the materials, but that is the nature of the beast when we are learning!

Cast them in 4" or 6" round thinwall PVC pipe with a piece of rebar down the center. Then just press them into the ground when its the soft and muddy time of year.
