I always headcanoned that Kya's hatred towards Zaheer and aggressiveness (she was normally very hippy and even against Ming Hua she wasn't nearly as aggressive) was cause Zaheer killed Sokka, her uncle. I kind of fooled myself into thinking it was canon.
That makes sense. Sokka becoming an important person, mainly in Kya's & Bumi's childhood while Aang was off with Tenzin, preparing him to be the one who would take over for him as an Airbending master.
I have thought that Bumi learned a lot of his fighting techniques from Sokka at a young age, since even Kya would have had a waterbending master in Katara training her. It seems appropriate that Sokka would have guided Bumi because he was a non-bender (at the time). Bumi's storytelling ability always seemed a lot like Sokka's influence on him.
Sokka dieing protecting Korra would be a fitting end for him. He fought by Aang's side and was instrumental in the administration of republic city after it was formed. After his brother in law died he would want to see Aang's legacy continue as he was reincarnated into Korra.
i think that was Sokka's final battle, he face the younger more agile Zaheer and despite taking some damage he managed to defeat him, after that he named Korra's dad as his successor for his great show of courage in the fight. I imagine his last moments were peaceful with all his remaining friends and family around him as he made a final joke before his passing.

The battle with Zaheer probably dealt ever lasting damage to Sokka, maybe he survives the battle but dies shortly after, Zaheer likely was capable of submission maneuvers on Sokka so the likelyhood of Sokka being crippled from the battle is high.
Sokka never fought Zaheer. Tonraq did.

@@15jewjew Chief Sokka was the head of the rescue 🛟 mission alongside Tonraq, Tonraq defeated Zaheer but that doesn’t rule out Sokka vs Zaheer. It’s a chance that Zaheer kills Sokka before being overwhelmed by Tonraq. Or even more foreshadowing P’li killing Sokka with a combustion blast 💥 as Sokka always remembers his achievement of “beating” Sparky-sparky boom Man 💥 during the flashback of Yakone on trial for bloodbending. So I think either Zaheer killed Sokka or P’li killed Sokka. And if Suyin turns out to be Sokka and Toph’s daughter than she avenged her Father by killing P’li. Full Circle ⭕️ plot right there haha.
I think it makes sense here. Sokka died due to Red Lotus, maybe it's best for us to leave how he died out because he is too loved. One thing I want to know is wtf happened to Suki?

I don’t know for sure because I just watched a video of the comic, but it looks like she and Zuko had a thing. But she did go back to Kyoshi island to lead the Kyoshi warriors, so she and Sokka might’ve been an occasional couple.

Sokka sacrificing himself to keep Korra, the spiritual descendant and reincarnation of his best friend and brother-in-law is definitely within his character. We've seen Sokka willingly sacrifice himself for those he cares about. Toph during the Final Battle example.

Also on the title screen it shows Zaheer suffocating Sokka, but Sokka DIED long before Zaheer gained airbending.

Many people don’t even know Sokka was in battle with the red lotus to protect Korra. The creators also didn’t add anything to Sokka’s history so what else were fans suppose to think? This video helps with connecting the dots

I get why they don't want to confirm in the show but I'd like to know what really happened to Sokka
I personally think Gazan killed sokka. He had gone up against combustion benders and strong water benders before however he had likely never seen magma bending before.
Sokka has always used his intelligence, experience and problem solving skills to fight but being surprised with literal lava could do it.
it´´s possible the AoE of Gazan´s bending could easily kill Sokka by mere acident.

I like this theorie. Even though Sokka could have died after they got imprisoned because of age or something else, I like the idea of Zaheers scar being from Sokka's bummerang. It would make sense that he and Zaheer would have fought each other.

We really can't invent theories from scratch and then wait for directors to confirm them in canon. I doubt that Sokka and the Red Lotus will be mentioned in the new Earth Avatar series, and I also doubt the comics will go that far. We don't know what happened to Azula and Suki either but I don't see anyone coming up with conspiracy theories about their violent death. We know Sokka died aged between 74 and 86. Perfectly old for him to retire and die of old age.

But he could still fight, he was a nonbender, he probably had weapons.

And yet he was locked in a maximum security prison..even without bending he was clearly a formidable martial artist.
The guards were even very cautious and wary of him before they were even made aware of his new bending.
I think Sokka just died from old age. He was the oldest among the entire group. Which would have led to him passing away first.
No we recently got confirmation that sokka was indeed killed but it was by Unalaq who froze sokka's heart.

I personaly still think that adult sokka still managed to be a very decent fighter like his father so I think it's fair to say that even though he most likely was killed by Zahir, he still managed to give him a decent fight.
It's likely that Sokka became more than a _decent_ fighter. Remember that Piandao told Sokka that he'd surpass his skills if he kept training.

The real way Sokka died was when Unaloq escaped from the battle scene so only Zaheer and the other 3 red lotus members got into prison. Days after they succesfully protected Korra Sokka couldn't sleep properly and had some thoughts. He thought Unaloq could of had something to do with the red lotus attack as he knew the backstory between Korra's father and Unaloq. So one day Sokka sneakily infiltrated Unaloq's home and he found a secret passage way which lead to a room with red lotus banners and scrolls of the first avatar which they got from the lost museum found in the ATLA. Unaloq found out and came behind Sokka and made Sokka's heart stop beating to make it look like Sokka died normally from a heart attack not by some bending attacks. Unaloq then put Sokka's body on top of Sokka's bed. After some days Katara thought it was strange she didnt see Sakka in a long time and he wasn't seen with others so she went to Sokka's house and then found out Sokka was dead.

While this sounds plausible it can't be for certain. The scars Zaheer have on him appear to be caused by his rescue of P'Li from the Warlord. In the Season 3 Art Book Ancillary Art there are multiple images of Zaheer when he was much younger and he had scars that appear similar to the ones we see in Season 3 of The Legend of Korra. But of course most of the images are fanmade and picked by the creators to add. So his Sokka scarring him with his boomerang probably did not happen. But then again Zaheer has multiple scars so they could be from the same event or different events. Hmm very interesting the series just glossed over his demise almost nonchalantly. We need solid answers!

Mako says to his earth kingdom family that his parents were killed. So that word is used in the show.
My personal theory on sokka's death is that he died of an invention of his own creation.
But the theory you discuss also sounds somewhat logical to me.

One of my theories is that he only shortly lived down in the southern water tribe in person for a short while, since we know nothing of suki and she was never referred to as 'aunt suki' to a young tenzin. read in a post that if she helped with the police force she could have died in the line of duty as a non bender, leaving sokka to take up her position in the police force, once again getting him and toph closer together like they were when they were younger.
now i know theres an argument "but lin's father" we know her father walked out, but suyin looks similar to sokka, and the emo one also looks like sokka, so it's not far fetched that somewhat after they established the police force that they would retire to a more peaceful life, albeit temporarily as sokka is constantly busy with politics, and trying to keep peace. It would make sense that he isn't around often, then he dies leaving the rest of the gaang behind to grieve.

They're both the respective leaders of their bending-bros as well. He's sort of a foil to Sokka. It's very sad Sokka died like this, but I sometimes forget the world of Avatar is full of strife, and everyone you love can die.

Personally I would find it better if imprisoning the Red Lotus was Sokkas last big victory and he died sometimes later in retirement from old age (maybe around the time Kora was ten or so, this would give a 7 to 8 year time window between his death and Korra's fire banding test and 5 to 6 years after the battle with the Red Lotus). My assumption is that he had a fine but child free marriage with Suki.

Theirs is another Theory that poses the question of if Zaheer was a airbender prior. No confirmation but this theory basically states Zaheer was Aang orginal eldest who after going rogue was stripped of his bending which was why he hated the Avatar so much. Also why he was able to lead the red lotus which is a group of former white lotus who got pissed at them catering to Aang. Also explains why he has so knowledge of the air bender dispite their history being wiped. It’s also believed the Harmonic convergence didint create new airbenders but instead open latent genes in descendants of the airbenders who died off or hadn’t got the bending gene from there ancestors in the first place like Bumi.
I think that also why Kitara move away from the city since probabaly most of the city was develop by Sokka so it kind of hard memory for her i still think it would make sense sokka died in combat taking out the red lotus and took over as water representative of the south when aang died and all of them retired with Toph going and founding the iron clan and sokka returning to the southern water tribe and was probabaly elected as the new leader after his and kitara father pass away while also becoming the gurdian of korra as a child

So, Sokka died sometime between 158 and 170 AG, and the cause of death is believed to be natural, as he would've been between 74-86 years old. The lack of concrete information on Sokka's death is the direct result of his limited role in The Legend of Korra

The last guy said that unalaq froze sokka's heart while he was looking for clues about the red lotus, now keep in mind that unalaq was a part of the red lotus before zaheer got taken to prison. And he was able to make sokka's death look like he died of heart failure or a heart attack, and tragically katara found sokka's body in his bed because unalaq tricked her into thinking he died in his sleep. And only the ones who read comics know about this!

Tonraq wasn't chief of the southern water tribe until the end of book 2 of Legend of Korra.

The chief of the Southern Water Tribe was still Unalaq. The Southern Water Tribe was ruled by the chief of the Northern Water Tribe and didn't became independent up until the end of Season 2, so the idea of Sokka was the chief of South is insane.
That was during Korra's time (book 2).
Sokka was chief of the south as his father (Hakoda) was chief. Sokka probably died when Korra was 4/5. That's when The Red Lotus first tried to kidnap her, as staed in the show.
Probably after Sokka died, Unalaq's father and Sokka's uncle probably ruled for a short time before he inherited it to Unalaq, Sokka's very young cousin

Idk, I feel like it would be weird for Tenzin to mention that Sokka was the one to protect Korra from the Red Lotus, then just not mention that was the battle he died in. That seems like an integral part of the story that, if true, would be very strange to leave out.

There was a tie in comic that addressed all the loose ends on LOK. Sokka was murdered by the red lotus alright , but it wasn’t from zaheer. It was from Unolok from the northern water tribe. He had unolok under suspicions involving a kidnapping centered towards a young Korra., which him, tenzin, and lord Zuko thwarted. The only ones who’d know such info about korra was very few people, which was unolok. Which is why Sokka had unolok under suspicion. After sneaking into unolok’s house and finding a hidden room with an ancient scroll explaining the story of the very first avatar, along with a red lotus token, Unolok happens to come across sokka and uses his water bending ability to freeze his heart , then moving his body back to his home to make it look like as if he died of natural causes, with his sister Katsura discovering him.

I have an idea about that. Maybe Senna was Sokka's illegitamate child, since Sokka never married. But I also have a theory that Sokka's uncle took over after Sokka died, and then he passed it on to Unalaq, so there was a point where Tonraq could've became chief, but through his father, not his wife

I feel like Bumi, Kaya, and Tenzin would have mentioned it at some point if this dude had 'taken out' their uncle. And the shows creators could have easily found a way to get it across without using the word 'killed' so I don't buy for a second that they were just hamstrung by network standards preventing them from informing people of such. Tenzin could have easily said 'chief Sokka sacrificed himself protecting you from the Red Lotus' or something like that when explaining what happened to Korra, for example. Pretty sure Sokka just died a regular boring death from old people health problems.

This is my favorite theory and the most logic theory for sokkas fate. Dont think many would handel to watch lok completly if they show sokkas death. Feels like many would blame korra for it just like they blame her for everything else.
