Transom is toast! 😂
I'm surprised the motor stayed attached on the way to the lake, must not be a far drive. 😂
Nothing more expensive than a free boat.
Been there.
Break Out Another Thousand
@@JakeDemuss90214...considerably more expensive!
@@JakeDemuss90214can confirm
Your saving these relics one at a time
Awesome channel man.you4 killing it in this genre
Outboard lower units have non vented gear cases . Its best to use the proper lube .
You are brave and trust your own work. There is a huge difference between breaking down on a Quad or dirt bike at your”land” and breaking down on the water. I enjoy your videos.
Another great video.Keep them coming.
Gotta ALWAYS replace the impeller. That's an annual job in my book. If you are replacing the lower unit oil, you should definitely be replacing the impeller. They are designed to be replaced and they are much cheaper than Tow Boat US.!!! Great video as always... Keep em coming!
That is a bit excessive schedule on the impeller. 5-6 years if you use the boat a lot like all year. My last boat was 20 years old on the same impeller but I only had 3 months out of the year I could use the boat and the last 10 years it got used 5-10 times if that.
Wow, you can see how rotten the transom is from the stress cracks around the motor. Cool to see someone saveing these old boats from the land fill.
If he ends up actually restoring the transom and floor I'll be shocked. My guess is this thing is still destined for the landfill after a few YT videos.. lol
Frisco Boater here on you tube Restored 3boat Transoms and floors
@@sheddski2942 yeah but those boats started nice and were worth doing it on lol
Do the flex test on the transom, lift your motor up and lock it in the up.position, then grab the lowered unit and move the motor up and down, if your transom is solid it will move your whole boat, if not you will see it flex under the weight of your motor
Hay got one hell of a leak in the bottom. Find leak and fix. Or get a automatic bilge pump.
Boat stringer, transom and deck restoration I think would be a good playlist series…
To replace the transom the right way, you'll need to pop the deck off. The deck is attached to the hull at the gunnels under the rub rails using aluminum rivets. If you drill out the rivets the deck should just lift right off giving you open access to the entire transom. Helps if you have a hoist to lift the deck off. Then its just a matter of cutting the interior fiberglass layer out, digging out the old plywood, and putting in new ply with a new fiberglass layer on top. As I understand it, there are new products out there to use instead of plywood to replace it. I repaired at least 6 transoms that way (many decades ago), its labor intensive but definitely doable.
I've heard Coosa board is a good option. I haven't done any transoms myself though
I've seen guys use a piece of aluminum plating on transoms before to strengthen them up, that being said I'm not to confident that that would be a reliable fix, probably better off just to redo it the right way and get longer life out of it and more reliability
I did not know that good to know
Sounds good mate.
That little old boat isn't worth nearly enough to undergo the huge undertaking of replacing that transom. That is a major repair and takes a ton of time and knowhow not to mention money.
Looking forward to seeing the floor and transom redone
Grab the lower unit while standing behind the boat and lift up and push down while looking at the transom, that should tell you what you need to know.
Looks like the water might have just been years of condensation in there seeping in very slowly. looked like it was about a 9:1 oil to water ratio I wouldn’t worry about it too much on a free boat. Take it out a few times and sell her for an upgrade.
Engine runs great. It will be interesting to see you fix the transome and floor.
Glastrons (Carlson) are still special to me. I restored an outboard version of the boat that 007 (Roger Moore) jumped the road on ‘Live & Let Die’ in, back in the day, and she’s still cherry.
No way would I waste my time, effort and money re-doing the transom and stringers on that old design boat. I actually got the same exact type boat from my father in law many years ago that was in about the same shape and had that same motor. I passed on re-doing it and either gave it a way or sold it for almost nothing, I can't remember. I got it free, never looked back nor regretted it. A boat in great shape and well taken care of cost a lot of money and time to keep up in good shape alone, I surely don't want to start with a wore out old, outdated POS like that to start throwing money and time at but hey, you do you, I get you need CZcams fodder but I'm out lol. I'll surely watch with a smile from my easy chair though.
Happy you did replace the crappy plugs with new one! Should gap them, that's super important...
When taking plugs out of the package even new you should check the gaps to make sure it’s correct.
Also that transom needs to be investigated more you have cracks on top and around the back of the engine.
I can’t wait to see you replace the transom. It will definitely be a learning experience. Great content as always. Thank you
Gee man if you decide to keep this boat or indeed own another boat PLEASE as a priority purchase and wear a life jacket as well as your future passengers. Accidents do happen. Safety first is a must for you and your passengers. Having said that I must say I am a big fan of yours. You can fix the impossible well done and thanks for your enjoyable videos 👏👏👏👏
always change the impeller on any boat engine unless you know it's been done not long ago.
Holy mother of.... this is one of the old classics my dude. And in line with the boats used in some of the james bonds of the time. I myself have the 78 ssv115 and would literally give my left arm to restore this ol girl back to her former glory. These boats are pretty well built even if you have to redo the transoms and floors and pretty much replace the wood. I know i have on my ssv and my inboard one to. If you were close to Lafayette indiana id be willing to give you a hand for free just to help in any way. Give this boat all the time love and respect bro shes a classic glastron ya know.
Remember to fill lower unit oil from bottom til it comes out top. Tip. Otherwise it'll not fill correctly. Once it's to top just put finger over hole to air lock it, put bottom screw back in then the top.
All that is what SHE said 🫡🫡🫣🫣
And there he goes doing it the wrong way😂
@@RT-vo2vhthat's not what your mother said
You would think half of these people never saw an outboard motor or a motorcycle get repaired😂
Lmao this reminds me of the post on Craigslist never left out always garaged mint condition. The board over the rot is hands down comedy lol
Try to find a marina in your area that recycles old boats. They'll have tons of old boat parts sitting on shelves. They'll usually let you browse through their inventory. You should be able to find control cables and a stern light for cheap. The stern light base on your boat is meant to have a telescopic lamp pole that is hardwired instead of having a removable pole with a socket in the base like most of the modern designs. Try to find a stern light with a bayonet style bulb. They last longer then the old automotive dome light style bulbs, especially if the motors charging system is unregulated as many old outboards were.
A classic of glastron boats .. ..
Beautiful ......i love those boats..... 60 and 70 years decade.... Repair it.....ut looks amazing
Always check/adjust the gap on brand new spark plugs. I'm done being amazed at how inconsistent they are, straight from the manufacturer. You would think you could trust the gap to be pretty close, but you absolutely can't. Happy boating!
Imagine the man he bought the boat off For $100 was on the lake fishing and the boat goes whizzing by lol Great job keep the videos coming man always enjoy watching :)
i think all the fiberglass on the transom will be cracked all over after first rip. you dont see old fiberglass boats near a lake anywhere around here in canada. they are always in a farmers field and stay there. Im really not trying to poke at good effort, but they just arent worth it unless you really wanna do the huge amount of work with new wood and fiberglass....if you do, thats what id prepare for
I'd adjust the trim pin so the prop is at least level if not a bit up compared to the bottom when tilted down and not with the engine full tilt in like you were running so it won't bow steer, The boat will be easier to steer and will perform better too.
I’ve learned the hard way to check the transom and floor before getting involved in any boat. Fixing rotted wood and replacing a transom is HOURS AND HOURS of very tedious work not to mention that fiberglass and resin is VERY EXPENSIVE and SUCKS to work with.
Im sure if the transom is bad you have the skill to fix it. As long as the motor is good it would be worth a restore. Great video content. Might want to install a bilge pump with a float switch.
You need to replace the water pump impeller. They’re only a few dollars and are easy to replace. But they’re rubber and letting them sit for any length of time and they warp and lose pressure. You don’t want to ruin your free engine! 😂
I just love that last comment, nothing more expensive than a free boat..Awesome.
It's only about $100 a day
For someone who is doing everything by yourself, you’re doing one heckuva job.
Admiral Webb's addition to the Lake Winnebago fleet. Do love the Johnson outboard, although my experience is more with the 5-10-15 horsepower versions. Finally, some 🐶Vinny-time
Get the motor off, separate the shoebox, new stringers, transom, and floor. Look into salt treated lumber installed with P.E. glue. No glass needed and that lumber will last 25 years. Then paint and decal the motor. One sweet lake /vacation boat. I have a 74 glastron tri-hull, same color as yours. I love that little boat.
Got love Vinny I reckon he was thinking it's bath time 😂
when you come up to speed tilt the motor up until the front end begins to bob up and down, then let the motor back down. This method will maximize fuel mileage and less rpm's to gain max speed. Great job
Not a power trim (manual) so just about impossible to change the trim when he comes up to speed.
He must not care about his carbon footprint
Add some music to your find and you and you Wifey plus Vinny ofcorse... enjoy awesome day on the Lake!!!! Great job again Joe!!!!
Pull the lower unit check the impeller.. i can almost guarantee you that its shot. Before you put it in the water replace that transom and floor with corsa board. Check the stringers and knees.
I get to watch a 2vintage video this early? This gonna be a good day lol
Them old Johnson and Evinrudes are tough and resilient. You can easily hop up your 85 to a 115 or 125 hp. All you have to do is change the carbs and flywheel on those models. Block is the same.
I liked the look of the plain marine board and congrats on the 🚤 she’s a beauty
Move that pin on the motor up one or two places you can trim her out and gain some speed.
I really would put a cover over that battery setting right next to your fuel tank. Rub some more hundoes on it and seems like a decent boat they seats look great for setting out in the weather and the old Johnson runs well. Can't wait to see what project you come up with next.
Awesome vid! And what a cool old boat. She's got some real pretty lines to her, and looks nice running in that lake. A great little ride! And man.... the ole' Johnson 85 Outboard. What a motor! A legend out on the water, whether it's a "Javelin" or not. These were just phenomenal outboards. I'd love to have that boat. I'd polish the heck out of it, and bring that finish back out a little. Fortify that transom a little bit. Do a little work on the wood trim pieces. I actually like the gray carpet.... and I'd change out the seats and do a little more interior work. New guages and steering wheel. Looks like maybe it's not trimmed quite right, as it runs. Looks like the motor needs to come up just a bit, once it gets on plane. It would be awesome if a trim pump could be installed. And boom! I'd run the heck out of this boat... out on my Lake. Love this boat!!
I also had some 75 and 1. , 50 V4 that was just exactly like this 85 I had also. But that old 75 horse had a magneto on the outside that flipped back and forth running off of a belt yeah they are tough engines they'll run forever if treated right. My 85 Evinrude never did not start
I just never let them sit over a month with gas in the carburetor that's one of the good things you can save yourself a lot of trouble
They probably thought reverse was out that is the way I would have done it it doesn't need a cable it needs to be fixed
Always take the top screw out first so it can vent and drain
Essential equipment for any boat... a fire extinguisher.
Law. One throable float device, horn. Lifejacket and his helmets
Is that going to stop it from leaking or does it not leak leaking😢 . Is that so he won't stab his foot through the bottom or what
Sigh.... those darn transoms! IDK. i never replaced one, because the stringers looked bad too. Good luck. I would love to see a video on it, but its not gonna be easy.
Those Glastron boats are top quality I owned one for many years looking forward to seeing you turn this into a perfect outfit would recommend a power trim Mercury engine about 75hp Alan Northern Ireland 👍
boat is junk without the transom being repaired
water and oil dont mix so if its latte cream it was churned up by the gears spinning, for years.
First thing you should do is pull the lower unit off and change the water pump if you haven't yet
That's a good looking boat. It is worth putting the time and work into it.
I have had several 90 deg V4 OMC 100avg hp engines. change the coils , and it will run smooth and new.
Nice find and great work! A glastron gt was in a James bond movie, it went off a waterfall and a glider popped out of it and James flew away.. it had a t top and was cool as hell!! That's definitely a keeper or whatever you choose to do with it..
I knew you could do it
for an $100 boat that's just WOW! A hull polish and wax will make it really nice. Also thanks for the content, it's soothing to watch this kind of boating stuff since the season is closed now from where I am.
Fiberglass the crap out of it
From the inside
Man the way you are you would love to have a pressure washer you would get off on how you can clean stuff with it then you can fix stuff like that boat better
The timber around the engine bolt holes is next i love the speed boat and a good engine to boot well done our joe
That is a drive on trailer for boat just to help you out when loading. I would definitely put a bilge pump in it just In case you get caught in the rain or take on water for some reason. Congrats on a good looking free boat now just needs a buff job to make it look new again.
Runs good!! Can't wait to see more on this boat..
I just noticed. The transom is broken. You can see it at czcams.com/video/kd6ZeS41K6Y/video.html both side are busted and leaning out. I would not put that in the water any further until a shop looked at it. At worst it'll break completely off losing the engine in the water and possibly sinking the boat. As for water in the lower unit. Only two ways for it to get in. Via the prop shaft seal or the water pump base plate gasket. Both are easy fixes.
Congratulations on your patience and determination. Yacht is shaping up nicely
She's worth spending some money on trust me. Redo the floor three lays of glass on some 3/4 exterior plywood jell coat it then put your carpet down doubt the stern bad but invest a jack plate.
Those old Johnsons are known for the piston rings letting go and melting in the cylinder.. Might be worth taking 5 minutes to compression test each cylinder . Hundred bucks for a trailer is a steal.. That boat looks great on the outside..
Youve got this little boat looking sharp once again, the 85hp V-4 should provide 40 mph blasts all day long. I had a slightly bigger 17' Cobia closed bow (no swamping submarines thank you) runabout with a 115hp Evinrude and it ran 45-47mph at 5700-5800rpm., which on that small boat is hauling. While not as powerful as the Mercury tower of power 115hp, i had no complaints with the Evinrude at all. On a 17' boat that Evinrude was more than enough power for a boat that weighed about 1000lbs. BRING BACK THE 2 STROKE OUTBOARDS!!!!
Gonna have to trim it up a bit to get up on plane. I've also got some extra ropellers for it, had 4 blade on mine, still have it.
Holy cow! 0:56 shows you have a really bad transom!
I am still waiting on Joe to bring home a small airplane or powered parachute flyer
I bought a 1978 cvx16. Same situation as you with the transom. I ended up doing an Arjay 6011 repair and its been holding up great. Look into that, well worth the fix and much cheaper than other options. My transom is pretty much the same design so if you have questions let me know
hey @55 seconds your transon is cracked better cut out the rot and fix it before your motor flies off then boat sinks You shoulda epoxied 2vintage in tall skinney letters on plywood
Nice boat! I love these old Glastrons and OMC's. Don't forget to do the stringers too when you do the floor as thats what gives the boat its strength! Its a lot of work to do the stingers and transom but well worth it if you plan on keeping the boat and like the work! Take care!
Scrap the boat, sell the motor for $500, and use the trailer for your hovercraft. Keep on hammering Joe, love your videos.
BOAT=bust out another thousand. Cool you got it running! Chris on NNKH did a video on a trashed boat he stripped all the wood out of and it still floated.
Vintage and Mustie on Sunday morning with coffee.
Doing the same thing here.wonder how many more..lol
🤮
Just found your boat video really loved it that Johnson V4 runs lovely for being left out in the elements I think they always were a good engine
Looking forward to the future repairs. 😊
I’d put a board all across the transom (or aluminum square tubing), and get longer mounting bolts for the motor and run the bolts through that material. Ultimately you’d want to just replace the transom wood, but I just wouldn’t run it like it is now.
That transom is toast, you are going to have way more in time and glass work than you could ever get for that thing. Just my 2 cents….
My dad had a pontoon boat with that same engine, was a good engine with no issues.
Glastron made another version of those boats with a tri hull design with a open deck that included seating
To check your speedometer look at the sending unit and see if it is clogged or has some trash in it. Pretty common issue.
Thanks I'll check that out
its called a pitot valve and its usually hanging off the back of the transom facing downward. sometimes they break off and the only thing left is a small tube. it uses water pressure to push on a diaphram in the speedometer gauge. they're not terribly accurate by design, its better to get a nicer fish finder with GPS so you can read your speed that way
Oh yeah when you replace the floor do not use 3/4" ply!!! Use 1/2" and glass both top and bottom AND ALL SIDES!!! You probably have to replace many of the stringers. There's a product called Seacast - a foam you pour in- check it out
I love those old Johnson outboards! They are more reliable than people think!
If you're doing floor replacement and transm replacement make sure you use liquid nails the good stuff
Nicely done. Better done than most. It floats. It runs. It's good. Enjoyed both videos
Nice job Joe ! As usual buddy !!
Get that transom & floor repaired and you got yourself a pretty nice free boat, Joe!
That sounds so simple. Glastrons are known for thier rotten stringers, transom and flooring. This is similar to an old Mustang where the floor, the subframe, torque box, etc. are rusted out. So it doesn't look to bad about it is structurally unsound and unseaworthy.
The 85 horse motor can be saved but it needs new fuel hoses, waterproof wiring, lower unit sealed, water pump impeller just the obvious.
So if Joe doesn't value his time, he could sink 500 or so it parts but as others have said this isn't worth much if it was running and in good shape.
Salvage the motor and trailer, maybe someone can use the interior and windshield but scrap the hull. It is scrap.
Love this content.
That is going to be a great project. Someone needs to teach us fiberglass repair. Love the Johnson outboard. Keep up the hard work, subs way up, views up, congrats
I'd try tracking down the cable and wiring to your speedo Joe. And I recommend adding in A belge pump for safety measures and purposes on that boat to.
The old 75 very similar to that used to have a magneto that ran off of a belt that was right on top of everything it was cool as you gave it throttle it moved
The floor looks good you can wave back to it👋🤣
Cool old boat, and you can't beat the price. 👍👍 Always liked the Glastrons from back in the day. Is that by chance Shawno Lake ?
Looks like half the skeg is broken off the bottom of the lower unit. Usually extends lower to protect the prop.
100% agree
So buddy of mine took a pulley and ran it to a boat winch up front under the dash and use that to adjust his trim with just a DYI FYI
Pull the lower unit check the gasket. Make a new one etc.
Those are nice older boats. If you do have the transom replaced I suggest someone professional. Last thing you want is to lose the back end on the water. But let's go on them floors 😃
That little bit of water in the lower end probably was from the bolts being loose but don't forget the prop shaft seals. If you do pickup water again they're worth a look at.
Nice successful first ride 👍🏼👍🏼
dont piss on the dudes parade getting somebody to even work today is a night mare let alone doing a good job it would cost thousands in repairs not worth it the boat is a 2500 boat in good condition
This guy would build a better transom than any shop.
Do a cost spreadsheet to fix boat .. assume transom, entire floor and stringers, and maybe lower gunnel structure. Aint no "free" boats ...2 good vids of it is yer profit ... run away 🙂
Great Job. I am very impressed with this whole adventure, what a score!!! Like the old saying goes...One mans trash is another mans treasure. and this turned out to be quite a treasure, sure there is some wood work needing done but being as old as it is, thats expected. Not a big problem, get the other little things fixed, polish it up real good and you got a min $2500.00 boat or more. Thanks for letting us watch you restore this beauty, and again GREAT JOB!!! I've owned a couple Glastrons, they were built for speed and handle like a dream, great boats.
The only way to really restore those rotten areas in the back and bow is to take the cap off. Which isn't that easy. It's heavy, Almost as heavy as the lower hull. And has the steering, engine control cables and wiring running in the gunwales. So to get it off you'll need helpers and a lift is preferred. Those old depth gauges, once they get that black spot in the middle, are ready for the trash can. I got a Garmin chirp, with GPS and depth, for $100 at walmart.
Great job! That 85 HP Johnson sounds great! I agree with the others that the transom be addressed right away. There are several options out there and you could possibly do a liquid transom. Again, great job!
It gets addressed when he feels like doing it.
dont be a douche!@@jerrywilcox9890 it SHOULD be addressed even before taking it back on the lake again. a transom that rotten poses a significant danger to the engine falling off under load. severe risk of needing to be rescued from the middle of the lake, and don't dare bring friends/family on a boat with a transom in that condition
