Ramana Maharshi and Muruganar, part two, presented by David Godman

  • A few weeks ago I was invited by Dr Sarada Natarajan of the Bangalore Ramana Maharshi Centre for Learning to give a series of talks on Muruganar. Since I was not able to do it live, I recorded my offering. The first talk in the series can be found here:
    • Ramana Maharshi and Mu...
This is the second installment in the series. It was recorded in a studio at the University of Western Australia. The talks are part of a programme to commemorate the 40th aniversary of Ramanajali, a group that has set to music and publicly performed many of Muruganar's verses. Sarada suggested that I add a segment in which the Ramananjali group sing some of the verses that are mentioned or read out during my talk. I have, accordingly, added her selection, along with a brief introduction to it. If you want more information about the music that is presented here, or about Ramananjali in general, the contact information for the Ramana Maharshi Centre for Learning can be found here:
    ramanacentre.com/contact-us-2/
If you want either to find more information on Muruganar himself or read translations of his extensive poetic output, I can suggest the following publications:
    www.davidgodman.org/book/the-...

    www.davidgodman.org/book/guru...

    www.davidgodman.org/book/rama...

    www.davidgodman.org/book/arun...

    www.davidgodman.org/book/sri-...

Each link will take you to a page that gives a summary of the book's contents. There is also an option to read excerpts from the titles listed.
The original Tamil verses of some of these texts have been uploaded on the Sri Ramanasramam site:

@@James-cz7bl actually I am very familiar with his
teaching . Ramana himself claimed that kundalini is the self.
He never excluded any path to realization.
Whatever is , is and can not be any other way.
Yes it's true that certain yogic powers can lead one astray but that depends on the individual and their level of egoity, and whatever happens is destined to happen anyway.
It's only due to one's ignorance to think that things should or should not be a certain way.
Regarding shakti, regardless of the illusory nature the maya provides, the reality that one percieves cannot be dismissed untill they transcend such reality, whether they know conceptually the truth or not.
Someone who says I am Brahman, I am Brahman is only fooling themselves unless they are actually established as that.

Sivaprakasa Swamigal, a distinguished Tamil poet and saint who composed Sonasaila Malai, a hundred-verse poem in praise of Arunachala, summed up the feelings of those who had been stirred by Tiruvachakam when he wrote:
If you were to ask which was the more glorious:
      the words of the Vedas,
      which are said to be
the utterances of the three-eyed One [Siva],
He who is the universal Cause,
and who has a body that is shared
      with his beautiful bejewelled Consort,
      or
      the honeyed words that sprang
      from the flower-like mouth
      of Vadavur’s Lord [Manikkavachagar],
who extolled the greatness of Siva,
      the Supreme Being,
[this is how you would know:]
      here upon this crowded earth
      we have never observed
that the hearts of those present
      soften and melt,
      whilst tears flood their eyes,
      when the Vedas are chanted.
Yet, if the Tiruvachakam is recited but once,
      there are none whatsoever
whose hearts will not melt and flow,
be they hard as granite blocks,
whose eyes will not fill up with tears,
like water seeping into a hole
      dug in the wet sand,
who will not tremble and quiver,
the hair of their body standing on end,
and who will not become His devotees!

    How Humankind Came To Be
"... New Year’s would normally be a time for sharing a few pleasant remarks about the occasion. But I am seeing imminent danger approaching humanity, and have been called upon by divine beings to pass along, for this reason, several things to everyone in this world. Each of what I am about to disclose is a higher, closely guarded secret, and these are being shared to provide a true picture of affairs, and to give people another chance at salvation."

Why the Creator Seeks to Save All Life
"...The Creator is the Lord of all divine beings in the Cosmos. He is the maker of the Lord of lords, of the King of kings, and He is the Sovereign of all lives-including the Three Realms’ human lives, spiritual beings, and material things, all of which He made. Hello Master.
Meditation means desidentification? In my experience it was easier in the beginning to observe "i". And I don't know why for years i felt like "i" fighting and destroying every other"i". Was it wrong? Is it normal? Why would I not watch the "i" directly? Why years of practice are needed? If we watch "i" directly we are the pure self directly.
So I have been wrong all this years because I was believing a wrong sense of "i" that fight everything else? (Stupid)
    Thank you

    • @ravichandra927
      @ravichandra927 Před 2 lety

It is not deidentification. Understanding is required rather than disowning your wrong self.
Generally, we identify ourselves with the experiences we go through ( our given name, school and degrees, profession). Experiences become memories and mind continuously creates chain of thoughts, each thoughts provokes us to do this or that to satisfy it and you are caught in the cycle of pleasantness and unpleasantness and thus bind the experiencer with experiences.
You have to focus on the experiencer, your true self, rather than experiences that create a false identity of your self, your wrong self. Turn inward and focus on this core, the experiencer. What is it that experiences all the experienced. Alternatively, you can focus on the inner space from where thoughts originate and subside. Observe this space and abide in it. You will gradually be established in it. Remember the analogy of bull, grass and stable David talks about.

If we are only the mind and body, what happens after death? In deep sleep, we also lose conscious awareness of the mind and body, yet we still exist. This Self-awareness is who we really are, the same awareness present in waking and sleep, at age 10 or 70, and is ultimately the answer to the question, "Who am I?"
"In the inquiry, “Who am “I”?, “I” is the ego. The question really means, what is the source or origin of this ego? The very purpose of self-inquiry is to focus the entire mind at its source. It involves an intense activity of the entire mind to keep it steadily poised in pure Self-awareness.
To go on rejecting thoughts may be a stepping stone to vichara (self-inquiry); but really, vichara beings when you cling to your Self and are already off the mental movement, the thought waves. All that is required to realize the Self is to be still. What can be easier than that? Hence Self-knowledge is the easiest to attain."
