- A homeless musician loses her violin.
SOPHIA is used with permission from Jared Rosenthal. Learn more at promcreative.nyc.
Sophia is a homeless woman who plays violin for audiences in the subway, eking out an existence among the urban grit and bustle of New York. But one day her violin gets stolen, turning her world upside down and threatening her livelihood.
Desperate and afraid, she goes in search of her most prized possession, but without her violin, she becomes truly invisible, unacknowledged by society -- and is driven to desperate measures to regain any tenuous sense of belonging in the world.
Writer-director Jared Rosenthal has crafted a powerful short drama examining what it means to be deprived and live in the face of constant scarcity. As a homeless woman, Sophia has very little in her life, but the one thing she has, she holds dear -- not just as a means of making any kind of living, but a way to bring beauty and dignity to her life. Her violin is her identity, her only way of being something beyond just homeless and invisible to the people around her.
With intimate handheld camerawork, the film is not afraid to delve into the grit and difficulty of being a homeless. But it also takes great pains to record the beauty that Sophia brings to the world, making for rich contrasts in not just the images but sounds. Sophia's beautiful playing must compete against the clanging of the subway and sounds of the crowd -- and the co-existence creates both dynamic and dramatic tension.
The film's foundation, though, is a terrific acting performance from lead actor Jenna Williams, who captures both the consummate talent of a violinist and the desperation of a homeless woman teetering on the edge of society.
Raw and heartbreaking, this is a sensitive, considered snapshot of a turning point in one woman's difficult life. With strong storytelling and craft, SOPHIA bestows honesty and empathy onto its subject, opening our eyes -- and hopefully our hearts -- to a character too often ignored by society, or shrouded in harmful stereotypes.
her violin was more than something to help her get through the day. it was her PEACE
I appreciate how they showed that bit about how homeless women deal with that time of the month (when she ripped her shirt to use as a pad). A simple thing like that we take for granted.
Shows that there are clearly two kinds of thieves. Those who take from those who have so little are beyond disgusting.
And you know what? These thieves are mostly rich brats.
Don't get Robinhoodie it is all theft and it doesn't matter if it was taken from the poor or from the rich.
@@travelfoodbusinessbestheyyono So BRAVELY spoken, as you type on YOUR computer, in YOUR own sheltered space: Take a hike!
Are you talking about governments?
@@travelfoodbusinessbestheyyono boo you
She needed it way more than they ever will...despite it being ok or not......
A little over 3 years ago I had 4 different instruments that were made for me removed from my life. I’m still without. I started crying hearing her first note, felt fear when her instrument first disappeared, had trouble breathing when she was crying and ended the video unsettled.
Loosing an instrument is, for me, the same as loosing someone close. The feeling is similar. They both respond to you, argue with you, can be agreeable or not and ultimately comfort you.
03fromIP wow
I am so sorry for your loss - losses ❤
Julia Connell , Thank you.
True, that is how i feel with my piano
@@Lunar123424 Wow, I just went back and read this for the first time since writing it. I am crying again and realize I’m basically pathetic. And still without any of my instruments as well as three hard drives filled with music I wrote, played and recorded. It wasn’t all good but some of it was, (is). May have been destroyed. Ireally don’t understand why the universe as well as the person that kept them feels I shouldn’t have any of that. I didn’t mean to ramble but felt like saying that.
this makes me want to cry , how much it mean't to her, her soul was in that Violin.
Believable performance is *always* something I notice first, and it was top-notch here. I also loved how the cinematography emphasized the violinist's everyday struggle. As for the ending, it left me in awe. It was beautifully shot. At the beginning of the scene, you see the woman deciding whether she should steal the instrument or not, but as she gets more and more anxious, you realize that she's actually trying to deal with the aftermath of her regrettable action.
Yeah but I think she came to terms with it and was just happy to have what she needed to survive and apparently needed for mental clarity as well. B/c she smiled at the end. Morality is relative, and in this case it was a survival issue, though still unfortunate.
Close but no cigar. The performance could have us a lot more work. I was homeless before, the acting was about 60% there. Reactions where of and the bird bath was way to inaccurately done. Believe me. I know. Honestly in the end..... she wouldn't have gotten away with the violen, the family was to close, she was in a rich neighborhood and they all would've know she was not from around there and she would had to flee or been arrested. The performance was almost there. Good story though.
@@ninjahvoand797 I agree, the only way this works is if they got in the cab and was 1/2 mile away or something before they realized the girl left the violin on the curb. Other than that, the homeless woman would’ve gotten arrested. People, especially in rich neighborhoods pay attention to who should and shouldn’t be there.
😂 omg...you think there’s police on every corner? Crime happens no matter what neighborhood you’re in. It’s NYC-She could have easily gotten away with it! Happens all the time. lol
Compelling...I want more. Who is she? How did she end up here? I want to see more by this director.
Where is she now?
Pls link I wanna see how the actress is
@@sano8172 her name is jenna williams.. it is writtin in the credits
"Soft White Underbelly" interviews quite a variety of real homeless people and many of them are quite intelligent
at least one formerly houseless genius too - Gummo the hacker
I agree. There is a full length film right there
This was a really good short film☺✨ i really wish it was longer though 😢
So gripping , wanna hug her help her xx give her violin back, can't help but cry , it takes nothing to be kind. Kindness goes a long way. That creepy guy from the train better stay away. Ps she's a great actress 💛
I wanna hug her so bad....
Me too. So sad
I want to marry her and buy her the best violin she would ever own just to listen to her play for me!
Allen Quartermane jshssh straight men think owning a woman is romantic lmfao
Plenty of homeless people about that you could hug; only difference is they're not in a film you can watch.
Hug me I'm a homeless rapper from Cleveland
I could feel her pain and chaos. I play strings but I'm not homeless. God bless all the Sophia's //
These people are soon to be walking all over the red carpet. Amazing talent!
I’m a violinist and this strongly relates to me
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
If you were homeless this would relate to you. Just because you play a violin in no way makes this relatable. OMG!
@@brerrabbit4265 maybe she can relate to her attachment to her instrument /baby and how painful it would be to lose it.
Kares Pratt ok but it was highly unrealistic considering how good they portrayed her playing to be yet she is homeless and has no money. She would have enough money to pay rent just from busking and maybe some gigs. Besides the fact that her bow hold is totally wrong and she only knows one finger position, she some how knows how to execute every note like a professional.
@@brerrabbit4265 you took the words out my mouth...everybody always want to make it about them! Me me me me... smh
This video hurt my core she is so humble
This is a masterpiece. So well depicted and incredibly well done!
This is nearly the same premise of the classic 1948 Italian film “Bicycle Thieves”
It’s a wonderful film
Highly recommend
I read a news recently about a woman whom happens to meet the same predicament in Los Angeles. She's not local and it's really sad.
Yes I saw that as well
What a heart-wrenching story. I felt how bereft she was when she lost the thing that brought such joy and meaning into her world. Ahhh...
Utterly enthralling. This and "Forever" are my favourites of yours thus far.
This is the only time I have ever sided with a thief!damn...this was moving😢
Wait what
The train scared the crap out of me
Great story, acting and music - loved it! . . although it was heart-wrenching . .
Wow. Her performance is amazing!
This is one of the best short films you guys have featured! Love it!
Violin was piece and tranquility and freedom from The Real World of being homeless and that's what made her feel alive throughout her struggle being homeless I get this a lot I've been her place way too many times she's inspirational that she could play an instrument what's such profound feeling a real artist😇😇😇😇
Excellent! I really felt the main actress' every emotion....Well done.
This is Depressing! ☹️
Yes, I was like "What kind of pos seals someone's livelihood?" Then the ending. It looked that she was dependent on the music.
Great actress ...Great story....Well edited!!!
When ever I'm depressed or just fred up with everything I watch Omeleto 🙂🥰
Me too
Me too
Very realistic. She was definitely on the spectrum; and played the part very well. I'm impressed.
This was all she had all she loved. This was like a near death to her and she fought for her life. Wonderful actress and story. 🙏
This was heartbreaking story
In the opening scene she is wearing the white undershirt. The maroon shirt was on her the entire film, if I’m correct. I’m wondering if that is a scene POST the events of the film, and she is even worse off. it explains the look she gives to herself in the mirror. She was obviously torn in her feelings about what she did in the end.
I'm homeless and I play the skin flute for wine and cigarettes. It's almost like this was written about me.
What area are you in? HUGS
Buhahahaha !!!
Lmaooooo
@@amandaroman3471, what area do you want me to be in? I can hop a train tonight!
If anyone needed to be a thief more. Great actress, that last scene. Those juxtaposed emotions
This world does not belong to the Talented !! This world belong to the Rich !!!
Very true 🎀
And the thieves
Success is largely due to luck and the more luck the more one thinks they earned it.
8:31 Store owner has an astute poverty radar: “We have some used and refurbished violins starting at $500”.
Superb. This makes me tear...
So good, I am going to watch it again, right now...
I want more of this Loved it so much Thank you. Actress 😍
Awesome acting, brilliant all round
First of all, she's an amazing actor(Sophia), or even amazing would be less. The violin and it's music is drug for her which makes her oblivious to her sufferings temporarily. When I get upset music calms me the same way. Wonderful concept.
There comes a time in life when we need to compromise on our values to achieve our goals. The guilt will haunt her though...
purplefashion03 yes it will
Jenna Williams is absolutely a woman of stunning beauty and talent.
Love it ❤ one of my favorite of Omeleto ... i just wanted to help her. I would take her to my home and helped her finding a way to her life...
Plot twist:
She is a professional violin thief and hands over her goods at the train station.
The customer shown was actually her competition.
huh?
HHAHA genius
beautiful...
Jenna Williams portrayed that character very nicly .. really stepped into that role & did it justice.. .realistically no pretty girl is ever homeless for long..
this video is soo deep yet all i see are pathetic comments of people who lack attention in their life.
Or we just suck at analysis. 😛
Eat
like a full circle...
Im a cellist but quite depressing.
I love the violin its beautiful but i dont know how to play. I wish I could.
Very sad, sadly
I thought she was going to offer lessons to their daughter. How disappointing!!
It was terrible that her violin was gone and disappeared
this is so powerful
Amazing film! But as a violinist, I’m triggered at the inaccuracy of the playing...
Noa Mayer the last part of the music should be on the E string, not G. But that’s maybe the “upside down” message?
Well, I'm a. pianist but could also note that the actress's faking wasn't especially good. But, for me at least, that didn't detract too much from the overall poignant beauty and sadness of this movie.
So powerful.
Wow! I’ve felt that pain before.
OK someone has to say it BICYCLE THIEF very well done
What did she do in the bathroom
She washed her self with the sink and she ripped her shirt and made a tampon because she was on her period
6:44 if I was desperate or destitute and a working guy said I was cute, I'd accept the quid pro quo offer tbh.
Incredible acting
This reminds me of the bicycle thief with a happy ending.
She also featured in " Beauty" project Her, short movie by IRIS. Check her out. She is a brilliant actress 🤗
Did she get the violin or naw
yeah she stole it from the girl, you can see at 11:13
9:59...... she should've just taken a violin and started playing.
This was heart breaking :(
oh my gad i cried as well, amazing moove and she is very good actress. loe it. thank you for sharing.
world is so awful sometimes
Ps plz do more romantic films to come from the heart wrenching drama x great film wanna help her
Ooooooh that was delicious. Anyone know what the soundtrack is, by chance?
We need to reconsider our idea of being homeless. So often their story is not what we think.
❤🎉❤
What Goes Around comes around
True Story
Damn this was deep 😩
Bitter sweet ending - I want to know MORE - what happens next - how she ended up.8n that place - how I can HELP!
did I miss anything by being deaf ? captioning please
Captions: she wanted to work out a bargain at the 4 1/2 store to get a new violin, he said no
Will her arpeggios still sound crisp and airy or be completely laden with guilt and loathing? Sadly her music will never be same
Well directed. But why would some one on the street buy a 500 violin? Surely their are cheaper options!,
Part 2, please :(
Bruh violins cost a lot
Well done Sophia.😄
Ain't there cops at York street in that booth okay what ever
Being homeless is Hell, trust me
Gotta do what you gotta do
Amazing
Great video, 👌👍
bravo!
I would really help her 😭😭😭
Wow soo good 👍🏾😁🤗😍🙂😃
my name is Sophia lmao aah
Practical thing to do really
This is good !!!!!
She did the same thing that someone else did to her
SMH 🤦🏻♀️
