- Twin sisters turn into rivals after one's gymnastics career steals the spotlight.
SECOND BEST is used with permission from Alyssa McClelland. Learn more at finchcompany.com/directors/al....
Velika and Nouchka are twin sisters. But they lead very different lives, though they live in the same home. Nouchka is a star gymnast, whose career is nurtured by their domineering Russian mother, who projects her own aspirations onto her talented daughter. Velika, however, works at a pool and spa store and is ignored.
The sisters were once close but have diverged emotionally. But one fateful day, both of their careers take an unexpected turn, changing the dynamic of the family.
Directed by Alyssa McClelland from a script she co-wrote with Simone Moessinger, this deadpan, intelligently calibrated short dramedy is a portrait of a dysfunctional family that achieves a complex, unique tone and mordant humor with its remarkable images and committed vision.
What's most striking initially about the film is its distinctive visual approach, which emphasizes artful, striking but often static wide shots. Within the frame, characters move in and out of spaces exuberantly festooned with decoration, and color in the sets and costumes is cleverly employed to keep the eye moving. But despite the almost fanciful use of color and volume of the film's physical world, the wide shots create a sense of emotional aridity and isolation, as does the spare dialogue, with little interaction or relating between characters. Each character is off in their world, and these worlds rarely intersect.
Funny little details catch the eye and build character and milieu, but the overall impression is distant and absurdist, as if watching strange specimens go about their existence with their odd rituals and preoccupations. Such a distance can often skew cold, but as the spare but meticulous storytelling focuses on Velika, her character and the challenges she faces become clearer and the narrative begins to engage emotionally.
The challenge for Velika -- and the whole family, really -- comes in the form of her overbearing mother, who completely neglects Velika and her husband in favor of Nouchka. The film applies a spiky, almost satirical lens of humor to its observations of a stage mom/coach with her young protege. But as the film unfolds, viewers realize how lonely Velika and the rest of the family is.
The performances here generally follow the almost mannerist approach of the visuals and are muted and deadpan. But flickers of genuine emotion, especially from actors Karina and Raechelle Banno, who play the twins, hint at the reservoir of sadness underneath everything. These deeper feelings come to the fore when Velika and her twin's fortunes change one day, changing their family as a result.
SECOND BEST is deeply and darkly funny, but its humor is of a very dry, ironical vein. It's a necessary distance, for if the film took a more naturalistic, straightforward approach to the portrayal of the family, it would be a tragedy to watch. Instead, we're allowed to laugh at the absurdities of the human ego and watch their ripple effect on a family quietly enduring its dysfunction.
In the end, though, there's a gentle twist, and we're rewarded with a scene of genuine rapprochement and connection. It reminds us of the connection that was lost for these twin sisters, but also what is restored when they assert themselves and stand up for themselves and their bond, despite everything. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
So she wasn't really injured, right? She was just pretending so her Mom would stop breathing down her neck all the time. Good for her! She should do it for herself, not her Mom.
Maybe she noticed the peaceful life her sister got after being injured and followed the lead? Sure it looks like her mother is achieving her life dream through her daughter... Very toxic.
@@kunaljanvalkar2850 Yeah, but seeing how she's still twirling her ribbon in the end, I think she likes doing it. She just don't want her Mom keep pushing her like before.
@@cahidijoyoraharjo7833 that and the fact that she literally threw it in the other sister's face! Also with her breathing down her neck, watching what she ate and having her up at the crack of dawn every day and night to practice is a another factor. She is obsessive of that you can tell! She just wants someone to be winning and something. She doesn't care who it is! Which was obvious by the big deal she made the employee of the month. You are supposed to love your kids and celebrate all their successes big or small, and love them regardless because everyone cannot be in 1st place all the time and in everything...
@@detrajackson5992 IKR, she's a horrible mother!
@@TheAstroflight Now, I think that's a little bit farfetched.
It's funny how father is the one who is rebellious and not the kids... He is only one who realises that the victories and failures of his athlete daughters are his wife's and not their own.
the daughter that faked an injury to throw the competition was the only one who rebelled
The girls apparently caught on too. Lol

The twins bond is winning over the narcissistic mother needs .. and the father secretly supporting them is the best :)
Yaasssss!!!
This was a very well done short story. Simple, depending on how you read it or with so much nuance to dissect for those who like to do that sort of thing. Bravo 👏
He's not secretly doing anything he's an enabler by allowing his abusive wife to treat his kids like that
@@salmaabdullahgb exactly. Through his passivity, he was enabling his wife. He could’ve developed a backbone and told his wife to chill, and not put so much pressure on them. He really annoyed me!
so healing :) this makes me think of my siblings, not my mom though.
This is one of the most subtle and beautiful twists. In my mind, maybe the dancing twin did feel a pinch for a moment as the working twin touched the fan blades, but we see that she was never injured or truly harmed, at all. A revelation about intention is made. The working twin has, in fact, taken the spotlight for a moment -- not in an act of malicious hunger to "please mommy," but to grant her beloved sister reprieve from that suffocation. They were a bonded pair, all along, not spiteful or jealous of each other, but a true team in the face of an overbearing, narcissistic mother.

Lesson, don’t be an overbearing, creepy parent capitalizing on your kids. Get your own life. That goes to you too pageant moms!
As a parent, I love this advice. Thank you. Living vicariously through someone is the most selfish thing a person can do especially if they're forcing their own goals onto another.
@Rosés solo is coming woohhh mostly moms
sometimes u dont have that much time as a parent to have an own life. Many parents live through their kids, and it becomes an obsession. Some children are very demanding, too, and keep their parents busy all day competing for attention. Dont be so harsh on parents, they got much on their platter.

loved the ending so much. it’s a shame that sometimes siblings grow up to resent each other without recognizing that they are both innocent and most of this good sibling bad sibling is a result from parenting. the employee of the year daughter could’ve felt that her sister gets everything and that she hates her sister, but in reality her sister is being overworked by her mom, the mom treats her failures like crimes and her successes just as winning the lottery, so this child feels terrified of failing, drained, probably emotionally repressed. both sisters are emotionally repressed, and the problem is the mother, not them. i hope that the father and sisters could reveal to the mom her mistake. she is living through her children

her co-worker is so adorable i love how he just there for all the crazy.
Its weird that she fell on her right arm and the left arm was in a sling. I'm surprised her mother didn't notice.
She grabbed at her left arm while on the ground
Could be she fell because she sprained her left arm (if she really meant to do it, that mightve been her excuse)
وأنا ايضا لاحظت هذا.
I’m not surprised her mother didn’t notice because all she cared about was the competition
The injury she was faking was not falling on her arm. It was spraining her arm while twirling to hard, and then falling in pain with her injured arm on top of her. You're the one who didn't notice, not the mom.
The mom was more upset for losing the competition than her daughter breaking an arm??!
probably cus the arm will be healed in a week or 6 but she probs won’t get the chance again, doesn’t meant he mom is in the right tho
She didn't break her arm.

The mothers a great actor, honestly everyone was. I could imagine this happening in real life. That’s how real it looked
Great film! My twin and I competed with each other in gymnastics. My mom was not like this mom. When one of us won a competition, the other didn't feel invisible. It made for a healthy competition between us.
That's awesome, probably gave you and your sister a strong bond. Nothing wrong with a little healthy competition!

If you lost and your twin won, I bet she would've said, "yes! I won!" And you would've been like , "well jokes on you, WE BOTH GET PIZZA AS A CELEBRATORY DINNER TONIGHT!!!"
Then you both went "ayyyyy"

When Velika was watching her sister from the kitchen window, I almost thought it was actress Joey King.
I did too! Gypsy Rose!
@@ellenlederman5209 yup. I figured others would see it too
Me too!

The twins do resemble Joey King a little.
She said "this is the most important competition of our life" now our insinuates something being shared. Life is singular. She's literally saying it's happening for HER. That tells me enough.
The dad was great - *LOVED* the end - glad these daughters are not like their mother (there is a reason, as the youngest of 5 girls, I do not compete with my sisters...)
Dear Julia there is no competition, live freely and find what you really really want, and do everything you can to be that person.

@@malkizadek3258 really? Did u really just ask what her sister’s CZcams channel is? Why would she tell you? 🤦🏻♀️
The mother has an obsession with winning ,so she focuses on the daughter that's going to win something. When she saw the gymnastic daughter could win she was obsessed with her but when the other daughter won employee of the month the mother changed her obsession to the other daughter. She doesn't care about her daughters, she cares about winning.
I felt she cares about her daughters she's just obsessed with being a winning family
This is actually a fantastic short film. I had kind of low expectations going in, but the colour palette was so striking, the story was lovely and concise, and I love that they had SUCH natural representation with the co-worker. Overall great job to everyone involved.
I was just observing the purple and blue combo at dinner when I read this.
Literally - this short film is so underrated! I can't believe it's one of the least-viewed ones on this channel!
Fantastic. The director has crafted such a rich and multi layered world. So many subtle details that I'm sure anyone who knows or grew up in an immigrant family will appreciate.
18:28 I love how she does the rhythmic gymnastics routine again, but this time with what looks to be a genuine smile of enjoyment and freedom. And then he sister joins her, what a beautiful moment.
This goes from being horrifying to being wholesome. Anyone who has lived in a family like this will understand what it is like to be towed around by one person who manages to make their lives hell if they don't live up to their expectations. As a result, everyone is in survival mode. What a great ending!
My mom wants everyone in my family to be academically successful and is just like the mom in this film but for grades. She has told me multiple times that “school is your only job” forgetting about my own hobbies which is required to achieve thus academic success. I understand what your saying completly lol
Underrated comment
Yup, my mom is like that. Her catchphrase is "I'm the only smart one in this house. You're all disappointment. All you have to do is making me proud and you can't even manage" 💀
Lmao the mum is so invested that she had to use the f word to describe her daughter’s injury and started crying. Oof
She put a sale through.. She didn't put the work down for the sale. There is a difference. It sucks when you work in retail and you are on the other end of this. You put all the work in, all the effort with the customer, given them all the product knowledge then they come back and get it from someone else. Stings more if u work on commission
The guy's silent scream was priceless!
I was thinking the same thing
I was wondering about that. I hope that man didn't lose out on some type of commission.
I think that was sort of a metaphor, the victories weren’t really real for either of them
Actually the guy didn't really deserve to get the sale. He told both of the other employees that the woman would never buy anything. Also he was at "Manager" Training when she came in.
the dad reminds me of my dad, he pretty much sees everything going on the family, except my dad will come in and have a say something about it if it’s a bother. he cares a lot about me and my half brother and on my brother’s birthday a few years ago, my brother made a speech and said how thankful he was to have my dad and i always get happy when i know i’m a biological connection between them. my dad knows how i feel in some situations. i still wonder how he knows the things that usually no one else notices about me, but i’m happy someone sees the small things i do.
It's sounds like you have a wonderful father and you know it. He knows the little things about you because he loves you more than he loves himself. I have a Dad like yours. Very quiet but speaks up when necessary and has always been there for me...even when I didn't know I needed him. My daughter's father walked away and chose not to be in her life. My Dad stepped in without anyone asking and has been an outstanding grandfather to her. We are very lucky to have such wonderful men in our lives!
I never noticed that the mate at the store was missing a hand and I've watched this multiple times. His acting is so good it never caught my attention before.
Heart goes out to kids who have parents that live vicariously through them.
I loved this. It demonstrates a very narcissistic mother, who plays one child off of the other depending on what kind of satisfaction she gets vicariously from them that she thinks makes her look good. The ending was great! How the sisters seemed to be in competition with each other when in reality, what is most important to them is their bond and dancing for the joy of it together, rather than allowing their mother to create an abyss between them. I think the Dad was great. He and his co-working daughter shared some of the best looks with each other that said it all.
It's a rare opportunity, as a rhythmic gymnast, for this unknown sport to be featured in a video that isn't targeted for rhythmic gymnasts to watch
aw thats very nice
The dad was definitely my favorite ! And the routine was beautiful! Wonderful acting and precious ending.
Here goes another mom whose trying to live her life through her daughter's...
I loved the "twist", showing the love between the sisters. So beautiful.
Great to see an Aussie one, filmed in Canberra! A touching story with a good lesson in it. I really enjoyed the music.
I had a guess it was Canberra because of the nice panoramic shot at the end, such a neat and orderly looking city. I remember walking around the city centre late one night in the mid 70's and there was not a car or person to be seen which was quite strange for a lad that had grown up in Melbourne. I had an odd feeling that I had been shrunken and placed in an architects model.
@@1kallay At 5:19 you can see Telstra Tower in the background, which is why I knew it was Canberra. It's quite a nice city. I've been there four times I think. Very different to Melbourne, that's for sure.
@@andemaiar I've only been there once and it's funny you should mention the tower, I hadn't noticed it. I was in the army and stationed in Sydney and we went down to Canberra to do a 20 round Artillery salute for a visiting overseas dignitary and we stayed at Duntroon military academy overnight. Not long after we settled in we were called for assembly and told to get changed into sporties then the boss pointed to the tower and said ''see that tower, we're going to run up there'' to more than a couple of quiet groans I can tell you. It was a great view from the lookout though. All the best.

Yes, I thought it would turn into a thriller movie. But it's a heartfelt drama.
That's a beautiful sight at the end dad looking over his beating equally talented loving girls and and that sky line nothing couldn't make a person prouder .
Where I live, we have a term for this called 'helicopter parents' because they 'hover' over their delicate little porcelain-doll children. Those kids end up being overachievers.
That’s what I am .
@@nerdgeekcosplay909 shame :'(
Ya I had to prove myself!
@Laaiba when you’re an overachiever, you end up setting goals for yourself that are either mentally or physically draining. Sometimes both. It’s good to set goals, but everything in moderation, you know?
Welshie here- I have that too. Can't even have a delivery without having the 'rents on my back
Thing is though, we don't all become over-achievers. It's the one, for example here: the gymnast, who is. That's my sister. The other girl, who I am, doesn't bother and has seemingly low self-esteem because of it
There is nothing wrong with over-achieving and of course it's brilliant to have such goals as long as it's healthy. But many of us give up because the helicoptering makes you question the point in too many things
It always neat how twins have that "connection" with each other. I watch the Conservative Twins and they often cut each other off saying the same thing at the same time. Pretty cool.

This is such a beautiful twist film the ending is so meaningful it's sad to see how the mom just want to rely on her daughters and that just cause them to separation and to see how they still ended up finding what they truly want which is doing what they like together just makes me cry
Absolutely wonderful story beautifully told. And I just adore the relationship she has with her coworker at the spa. Well done!
This so easily could have been me and my sister. I’m very lucky to have a mum who treats as individuals and not as prizes, even if my sister IS a champion winning dancer and I’m just a retail worker
Do you ever feel jealousy?if so how do you cope?
She really said look at me just to say it’s our year LMAO
This is a good example of how a lot of parents put too much pressure on their children to be involved in activities that they really do not want to be involved with. The parent is trying to live his/her dream through their children. The parents are more concerned about showing their children off to society more then being more concerned about the child as an individual person. I know of a lot of fathers who want their sons to be in sports and do well, and if if they do not want to be involved in sports, then the father has very little social interaction with them. What a shame. This is why the sister in this short film pretended that her arm was injured, because he got tired of her mother putting so much pressure on her. This is a great film.
The Bowtie Professor/Professor Yecats!
The mom is such a typical Karen. Favoring one daughter over the other and living through the gymnast daughter!
I think the sisters helped each other , the sales one helping to break muscle memory, or to make the fall believable to the ever watchful eye of mother
The ending was AMAZING! Seeing them dance together shows the love the sisters have for each other. Loved it. Thank you. 💖
Anyone else notice photo of the girl's injured left arm? Instead of pushing both the mother fixates on the sister who can still fulfill her desire to win.
I believe it the first sister did injury her left arm and was no longer able to compete. The photos seem to indicate the injury happened fairly recently.
Several people have commented on the fact the second sister fell on her right side but seemed to be grabbing her left arm. Her recovery at the end seems to indicate no permanent damage. Was she disqualified for the injury only or because the time for recovery would keep her from the games deadline?
Now that both daughters no longer can fulfill mom's dreams, will she leave them alone??
