Building the TotalBoat work skiff - I love it when a skiff comes together (Episode 37)

  • The moment we have all been waiting for is finally here. It's finally time to launch and test out our TotalBoat work skiff! The skiff is also for sale on ebay at the link -
    www.ebay.com/itm/-/201910876596?
The last thing for us to do is put on our final coat of bottom paint now that we have attached our deep runners. Then we are going to lift the boat up onto a trailer and bring it next door so we can mount an outboard motor to the transom. 50hp should do the trick. Before we swell up the bottom planking we are going to apply TotalBoat Teak Oil to the entire interior of the boat but not the bottom for now. Then we're just going to take a garden hose and run some water into the boat to help the planking swell up tight. Now we're all set to launch our skiff, down the ramp and into the water she goes. It's been almost 25 years since I've driven an outboard skiff like this I can't wait to see how it performs.
Also, don't forget to come meet Lou and see the TotalBoat work skiff with your own eyes tomorrow, April 22 8-3pm at the Jamestown Distributors Tent Sale in Bristol, RI. / 18814. .

Lou, I've been an avid woodworker for over 20 years. I got my start by watching Norm Abrahams and the New Yankee Workshop as well as This Old House. As someone who has never owned a boat and certainly never ventured into boat building I appreciate not only your knowledge but ability to teach and explain as you go. I appreciate you sharing your craft with us and also your contagious passion for boat building!

  • @KeystoneJul
    @KeystoneJul Před 6 lety

    Hello!
I'm happy about your offer to answer questions and share your expertise and experience. Its quite a chance, from a guy who is so dedicated and guru like about boats and at the same time ready to do unconventional.
I found you and your channel a few years ago while looking for ways to utilize plastic in boat building, thinking I could somehow fuse HDPE-plastic and build a boat from it.
The freedom to move and travel with the most essential equipment and gear is vital to all enterprises of human kind. Further I believe that nowadays the freedom to be independent, unbound and autonomous is not as tollerated than the skills and abilities of the people actually are and would enable or make them.
Thats one of the reasons why I want to build a sailboat to come around.
A couple years ago I got that obsession to find a way to do that on a really low budget but making it as innovative and sophisticated as possible at the same time.
The style which appears most promising to me is something with carbon, glas or basalt- fibres reinforcement and/or meshed mats and then using UHPC (ultra high performance concrete, like Ductal(r)) instead of epoxy, with vacuum injection. I've seen Danish plastered more bulky concrete sailboats on youtube, so there is no doubt that concrete works ...
One of my role models is Coretin de Chatelperron goldofbengal.com/
Meanwhile he actually did what I was thinking about.
Also a lot of German Professors getting so called future- prices now for C3 (carbon concrete composite.. Ok they started that reasearch- project in 2014) even though they're more talking about the carbon than the new innovations in mixing concrete with "flowenhancers", less water and short staples and fibers which gives it more strengths.
So, I thought you might like the idea!
What do you think about this and what shape would you give a sailboat hull
why are cool boats so expensive?
    Do you accept apprentice?

Watched all of them on my 69th birthday and was reminded of the first boat I built right out of high school.(a 16' catamaran sailboat that I modeled after a 20' Tornado racing cat) Although I used marine plywood I did develop some similar techniques that were so well demonstrated in these video's. How pleased I was that Jimmy Diresta went to the Wooden Boat Show and included a chat with you, Louis, in his CZcams video, so that I could follow his suggestion to view this series - it has been wonderful! I have always enjoyed watching TV programmes and videos on how things are made, ever since the days of black-and-white BBC TV in the UK back in the 50/60's, but they nearly always left me slightly dissatisfied that they had not gone into the full details of what was shown - but this series answered every question that popped into my head as I watched, and you explained the 'whys' as well as demonstrating some very interesting and novel 'hows'.
I have taken up woodworking in my retirement, and viewing this series has been an inspiration, and - perhaps best of all - might curb my desire to get jobs completed in a rush instead of following your example of working out the best ways to complete each task with patience and thought, and so end up with a better job.
You have a wonderfully relaxed and confident style, and convey information from your vast experience without condescension that makes it feel as though we viewers are part of a chat with you in your workshop. Obviously I am going to need quite a time at my PC catching up with all your other items, but for now I thank you for this series which has given me so much pleasure..

Louie, you remind me of a Bible Verse: Have you seen a man skilled in his work...he will stand before kings (Proverbs 22:29). Craftsmen of your caliber are rare today. Especially ones who share their hard earned wisdom for free (Mathew 10:8). I've watched all your videos and I've learned so much, was never once bored. You have a captivating personality! I love the way you communicate. Congrats to your videographer and sponsor.i know from my own experience CZcams videos of this quality are quite time consuming, thus very expensive to make. It was refreshing not having Ads shoved in my face at every turn. I was hugely impressed on how you did all the work yourself. So many craftsmen have an ego and leave all the unskilled (mundane) labor to others. Not you sir. Whatever the task...you were right there busy about it with a great deal of pride. I must confess before closing...i love you and your videos so much, I can be found every Friday morning searching for your latest episode! Thank You Louis for being a Boat Builder and a Teacher too!

Like so many others said, I hope your passion is not one of a kind and that you continue to inspire those yet to come. Even so, you already have done more than God could ask of any man.

Seing you swish past in that boat reminded me of when I was little, and we lived in Regina. there weren't any boats around, but we lived next to the railway track, and I'd watch the guys come ripping down the track with their caps on backwards so the wind wouldn't take them off. I used to say: "When I grow up, I'm going to be a speeder man, and wear my hat on backwards." Now we live in BC beside the railway tack, but the rails are gone. So I guess I'll say: "I'm going to get a speedboat so I can wear my hat backwards!" Nice boat!
