- Building the Jimmy Skiff II which is a wooden boat kit from Chesapeake Light Craft. Wooden boat building projects can be done at home or in a class or workshop. Boat building and building a wooden boat from a kit is something many people consider and can be a very exciting and satisfying project to build your own boat! This video talks about some of the ways a person can build a Chesapeake Light Craft wooden boat like the Jimmy Skiff 2 from plans, a kit and getting the entire boat built in one week by taking a class in a boat building workshop like the one offered by The Wooden Boat School and hosted by Chesapeake Light Craft.
Here is an update to this project - • How is the Jimmy Skiff...
The Jimmy Skiff II is a relatively simple wooden boat kit that is easier to build than many larger and more complicated plywood kit boats and offers something many small boats do not offer which is the ability to be a suitable hand build wooden row boat as well as a suitable small wooden sail boat and also a small hand built wooden skiff that can be little powerboat or motorboat.
I intend to use my Jimmy Skiff 2 as a motor skiff but perhaps someday I will convert it to a day sailer sailboat. I built my Jimmy Skiff II in a classroom setting with other people who were also building the exact same model of small sailing skiff. This video discusses some of the benefits of building a wooden kit boat in a class setting as opposed to building a wooden boat from plans or entirely at home.

Excellent video explaining the process and the benefits of taking the class. The only thing about building something yourself is knowing and fretting over every little imperfection. But that's what makes it uniquely yours. Great job!
I’m in Montana and I want a Jimmy Skiff after watching the video. Great job, thanks
The Jimmy Skiff II is a great boat. I built one last winter and have have had a great time sailing and fishing with it this summer! I clocked in at 183 hours but also built the sailing and did a lot of varnish. I varnished the whole interior and exterior transom but painted two tone green/white on the hull. Probably the longest part is getting the epoxy fair on the inside to make the varnish look good. With all the little nooks and crannies its super time consuming to sand. Seriously so much sanding.
Thanks for sharing!
great job so far Wayne. was surprised to see you finished so quick. your ideas for finishing sound really practical without going overboard. looking forward to you continuing your project.
Your Jimmy skiff II is going to be so much classier then the aluminum boats that many of us run. This boat will give you a feeling of euphoria every time you take her out.
Very cool. Very nice. Is now on the list. Thanks for the content!
This is really cool. She looks great.
Looking good! I am excited to see it finished and on the water!
Looks great nicely done
Thanks!
Thank you
been waitin for the vid, looks good
Awesome little boat nice job
Thanks 👍
Good work ❣️⛵
Nice Wayne !
Thanks ❤
Wayne! This is awesome that you took the plunge and are building one of these! We've looked on CLC's website a ton, and they have so many cool boats! Can't wait to see your finished product!
Awesome, thank you! Hopefully it will see the river before the end of summer.
Cool boat sir, Ive followed you for many videos.
I appreciate that!
Very cool. Congratulations!
Thanks!
Congratulations!!!! Been waiting for you to show us on your accomplishment great job!!! Would love to see it all natural like those old wooden Cris Crafts
Yeah I agree, but the labor involved to keep it looking sweet.
Tiss a nice lookin boat Wayne
Thanks!
Awesome job! I like your paint and varnish plan, she will be beautiful.
Thanks a bunch!
Your doing a great job on that kit WtBG, I would have to do something like that in a class also, if I didn't it probably not get done. Like you the finishing at home wouldn't be a problem. I can't wait to see more on the Jimmy Skiff till it's done and on the water.
Nicely done!
Thank you! Cheers!
Great video, I love that you can motor, row or sail. I am really looking forward to seeing this boat on the water.
Thanks!
Get yourself a flush trim bit for your router as opposed to sanding, you'll be able to use the bottom board as the level to trim the overhang off no problem. Love the boat!
Great Video and very thorough explanation! I think another advantage of going to a class to build this boat is that you won't need to get a lot of clamps from Harbor Freight or Home Depot if the school has them for you to use. My concern has always been what to do with all those clamps after building the boat? Guess you'll just have to build another!
good point! I actually bought a bunch of clamps just in case!
I really like your boat. It is going to be a ton of fun.
Thanks - I am excited to get it completed
I love these! They remind me of pirate dinghies!
Beautiful boat, im definitely interested in building one! The work on a wooden boat is never really finished
I just recently finally got back to work finishing this boat - and it’s such a pleasure to work on.
I think the navy blue color would look sharp on that beautiful boat you are building! Nice work Wayne! Looks great so far!
Thanks!
Honestly that's a sweet boat. And you built it! I would love something like that. Very cool.
Thanks!
Well done, good sir.
Thank you kindly
Absolutely gorgeous love it!!
You should be very proud of your boat
You will enjoy it for many many years.
Stick a new Suzuki 6hp motor on there. It only weighs about 52 pounds..
I think your boat is perfect!!
Thanks! I hope to try something like that on there sometime in the future
YOU DA MAN WAYNE!
I would love to own this boat at some point, but as a 15 year old, there are probably some other things I should be spending my money on 😅 it would probably take me quite a few months more than others but I seems so nice taking this out to the lakes of Utah
A big factor is being able to keep it out of the weather.
Wayne, that is looking beautiful. NICE work! Let me know if you need any tools (routers, cutters, etc.).
Will do!
Well done, Wayne! A great platform for lots of fun. And I'm sure the ibuprofen was hit last week.
It was an ibuprofen week!
Amazing very nice ❤a wooden boat building videos 🎉 Best contact 🌹 my favorite channel love you guys.... form Pakistan 🇵🇰🇵🇰🇵🇰🇵🇰
If I were to challenge all of my non-carpentry skills; I'd do the class for sure. Being the comic relief is something I'm good at.
Well it’s not the Tally Ho, but it looks nice on my iPad, good job!👍;)
Amazing job Wayne. I’m impressed. I’ve built model craft before and maidens were always incredibly gratifying, can’t imagine a full sized boat. I’ll bet you’ll have an ear to ear grin when you get out there and film it. You will film it right? 😅
Of course I will!
In tx Farly boat works has a class to build these if anyone is interested.(I’ve never done it)
When I built a canoe back in the day at school, our teachers favorite part was sanding. Had the same class back to back( 6 hours total a day) and we would spend close to all day just adding resin and sanding it back away
Wax on
Wax off
Can’t wait ‘till I finish mine- John
You're well on your way!
That is my boat and the class I had thought about building
Would you by chance know of van rietschoten & houwens built dinghy sailboat
No, sorry I have not heard of them
How do you manage getting the boat onto and down from the truck bed if you’re not using a trailer?
I think it might be tricky to do solo sine the boat weighs over 100 lbs.
How far off the coast can you sail this until it gets dangerous?
I wouldn't be going far in any small boat. These are for decent weather, moderate winds and calmer waters
Like - What is your day job? Did the skill from your day job help with this project? Garu from Michigan. 🚂.
No I have never done any woodworking projects before. I built a wooden model boat over the winter just to learn a bit about stitch and glue, but that's it.
@@WayneTheBoatGuy Thanks for the update. I am a retired High School Shop Teacher. (36 years) - Over that many years, we had students build wooden boats and canoes. Gary: from The Great Lake State. 🚂
