I built this boat almost exactly as this. Customized mine to hold a 3.5 hp outboard. Have more than 5 years and countless memories on it with my wife and daughter. So thankful for the video! Still doesn't leak at all. Currently fixin to put the 3rd paint job on it to be ready for summer 2021 on the little Arkansas river in Kansas.
What did you do different from them for it to withstand the engine Joe?
You should post a video and drop a link. I would love to see it.
Nice and quiet , no stupid music in this video ,
Great work.
I've noticed that some videos have "NO MUSIC" in their titles. I guess we're not alone in our love of videos that lack distracting music.
Agreed i can watch without loud music
Agreed
@@williepierce3933 Hey Willie, just read your comment and thought... you're the kind of guy that likes to watch people make stuff! :) I just started building a Stand Up Paddle board out of plywood you might like to watch! czcams.com/video/hPWi1gfqZKI/video.html Cheers, Aaron
This is basically the same design my Dad did when he built us kids a boat. He had no plans, never built a boat before, but built an 8ft pram in an afternoon. 3/4 ply on the bottom, 1x12 for the sides and transoms, 2x4s for the frame. He even got Fancy and slanted the bow. It was heavy and leaked a bit, but us kids had fun paddling it around the slough for years.
Oh, this guy is good. Informative, simple, but complete instructions and explanations for each step with little to zero background chatter... and as someone else mentioned - no cheesy music track.
As someone who is restoring a 1963 Columbia Sabre Sailboat, I wish to thank you. I learned some great wood working skills from this. Thank you so much for sharing your immense wood working knowledge!
Recently, I built a flat bottomed boat and used this video as a main guide. Thanks for the simple instruction. Pleased that our boat had no leaks and performed great during the initial trial in a nearby lake.
this is awesome, I am a cabinet maker ,never thought about building a boat but now I am!!!
I usually build small things such as Clocks although I recently got onto the idea of building a boat as I want to live off-the-grid and self-sufficient. The two boats I would like is a bass boat and a small ocean boat. With your knowledge and expertise would it be cheaper to build a boat or buy one?
I made one based off of this design, thanks a lot for the great video, it works great! I added hinged bike wheels at the center of mass, attached it to my bike, and went two miles to my local reservoir. It was an awesome project and I'd highly recommend this video to anyone who wants to build one themself. As a side note, I didn't use the most expensive wood or paint and it still worked great.
Do you have pictures of your design
This video has inspired me to make my own boat and it actually worked and was truly amazing!!!
Built one similar to this while I was stationed at Howard AFB, Canal Zone, Panama. But mine was 8 feet long and 4 feet wide. Caught a lot of peacock bass in that little boat. Lots of people wanted it when I left, so I picked one. Never needed to travel far from launch site, so we used a trolling motor. Used Sheetrock ring fast nails to assemble, then waterproofed the bottom and seams.
I've been wanting to build my own boat for years and this seems like a very good starter project thank you
Check out Spira International, several free plans. Excellant advise on materials and fasteners. Building my second Spira boat now. Lot of fun, and when your done, you can snicker when you see what your buddy’s boat payments are.
This is a great guide, thanks you guys for putting this together.
Very laid back - On the summer list in Central Otago New Zealand. Watch out trout
Easy to follow, and very descriptive.
Thanks for this video. I have zero knowledge of woodworking and this project actually looks within my reach - a good place for a beginner to start. I can't wait to see how this comes out - I'll post pics.
Reminds me of a boat my brother and I once made. I think it was two sheets of 1/4” ply, and 40’ or so of pine 1x6. It weighed nothing and went like the wind with 3 HP. Thanks for this.
Excellent instructional video! I'm on it! Thanks!
this is the most straight forward boat build I've seen. i have a nice bowrider but I'm gonna build one of these for the creek and river.
Very awesome video you guys had me at the edge of my seat can't Waite to see the finished product.
hey thanks for the start of my Jon boat .. I watched your vid first then others... I am going to attempt a hybrid of your boat. thanks again for the long nice vid and explaned everything
Always wondered how this is done. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for sharing a great video.....
That's a nice little boat build thank you
great vid. very eloquent and clear instructions.
Thanks very much, going to work on one of these this winter for some spring fishing! Thanks again, from Nova Scotia, Canada eh.
Must have watched this video dozens of times educating myself on building a similar boat. Best video on CZcams for building a flat bottom boat. I'll be building a 10 ft. boat out of 1/2"x4'x8' Sumauma Sanded Plywood. It's a 7 layer exterior hardwood plywood.
I helped to build two jon boats many years ago in the Ozarks. it's an engineering masterpiece. We used cypress for the sides, front and back, and maple for seats...Also, our boats are a little over 20 foot long.
Very good video. Would have liked to see finished, painted boat in the water. Thanks again.
been lookin to see this again for a while....Love from Lex
Brilliant very clear great shots ..
This looks really nice and what a great tutorial video Thank you :D If I do try this I will for sure post on my channel.
Now I finally understand.. Well done guy's
Finally someone using plane English on how to build what I need; Tip for everyone that watches this, the plans can be modified just be sure to follow the same basic assembly instructions. Me myself and I, are going to try to build a catamaran style boat using what I've learned so wish me luck ;)
Ps my plan style boat would be grate for duck hunter's and people who never seam to have enough room because ya forgot ya have a lot of 6ft 348 pound linemen in the family XD, fyi so thank on it and come up with your own ideas on how to improve this basic model. Just an inspire tip.....
the best tutorial to build a boat thanks you
Thanks, very good info for building a boat.
Great content and presentation. Thanks much.
I know nothing about building boats, but I’ve always wanted to build my own....pipe dreams and all that.....but I can listen to John all day long when he is softly spoken ....he can be talking about boat building, how to make burgers or lending his voice to audiobooks, he has a tone and accent that is just easy on my ears.......and I’m a 45yr old Asian guy from UK ...go figure🤦♂️🤷♂️😂😂
iam from puerto rico you build a nice boat .god ideas for my next project thanks
Great job. And simple way.
My Dad built boats to commercial fish the Mississippi River. They had no plywood or any of that glue. They ran big outboards on them. He and my grandfather only had hand tools. Those boats lasted for many years.
Im definitely doin this for my senior project...
Iam doing that this year for my senior project how did yours work out
@@evandupuis6633 I’m tryna do it in 8th grade to go fishing 😂😂
a beautiful piece of work - a lovely respect for wood - very relaxing !Thank You !
A rebel yell from down here in the low country of S.C. The boat building was a eye opener .Something I was looking for a simple plan for a boat. Should work good in the swamp and marsh down here. Thanks & a Rebel yell
When I lived in Kentucky I watched the show all the time.
Wood love to have seen it finished with paint....great video
Definitely looks like a boat. Looks just about like what me and my little brother built back when we were 10. Had to get a half dozen of our friends to help us drag that heavy SOB down to the pond. Ended up with only about 3 inches of free board with three of us in it.
Boats of this fashion have been built out of cypress and juniper for more than a century in north Florida. In Florida, this style of boat tends to be longer overall, have a wider beam and more freeboard than this example.
That is sweet!!!
he sound a bit like Snoop Dogg! i likes!
+ a really good vid, easy to watch, didnt notice the time that flew by!
I like your boat and I would like to build 1 myself.I think my son and I would get a kick out of fishing out of a boat that we built.I know I would!
4 years later did youu n your son do it ? I hope you did ! Spending time with sons is the best ! Let us know
I remember when I was a lot younger my brothers friends built a boat with a wooden frame covered with plastic (vapour barrier if I recall). The water was so clear in that quarry that at even 30 feet below you could plainly see that boat resting on the bottom.
lol
ha ha, great story, I'm dying, made my day
Made me chuckle that ! Thanks
They must have used a special type of wood that sinks.
Tim! What is for DINNER my brother! I am HUNGRY!
Nice boat...I loved it. Great Job guys!
Would it be possible to get a material list? Also can you talk more about the paint, did you primer the wood before the camo job? If so, what kind a primer? Love this project!!!!!
Remember remembering going fishing when I was a kid we had a wooden row boat we rented for $2 all day or all night them were the days
As always, great video!!
great video very easy to understand..good job.
thanks for this information. I would keep some space for a outboard motor.
Hey awesome video guys! I always wanted to try my hand at building my own boat & this video has me pumped up & ready to break out the tools! lol My dad built & used his own boats for crabbing & digging oysters, but unfortunately i never got the chance to help him build one. I think this video will help me get started! ;)
Just Simple Comment...Great Job from start to finish...in simple easy to handyman terms
Very enjoyable. Thanks
Great video! One thought: I've found that you always want to use materials made specifically for marine applications when you build a boat, plus I've had inconsistent luck with Gorilla Glue all around. I use Resorcinol (two-part purple stuff) because I'm old, but I think younger boatbuilders are using newer glues.
Anyway, that's my suggestion. Really neat design, accessible to beginners and folks who don't have fancy shops. Thanks for the upload!
Marine grade has no voids and better glue- - cheap-o ply thats painted or varnished will be just fine if you aren't gonna keep the boat in the water.
Looks HEAVY.
3/8 ply is not light. I have enough 1/2" in my garage to build a six foot FBB, the sheet weighs about 70 pounds.
love this build and the channel is awesome
I cracked the mast step on a small sailboat I'd made out of wood once. I separated it slightly, moistened it, put Gorilla Glue on it and clamped it in place. It said 85% strength in 15 minutes, and full strength in an hour. By the time that hour had passed it had a mast in is supporting a 131 square foot sail on a 32 square foot boat. Never had a problem with that mast step in the years that followed, and the wind was really up tat first day.
excellent job!
I have designed a fold-up pontoon boat. It would have a platform of about 8’ wide by 7 feet long, and it could easily fit into the back of a pickup (folded). Once removed from the pickup bed, the owner “unfolds” it. The pontoons also unfold to create (2) 16” wide x 12” tall by 14’ long pontoons. A very unique feature with my design is that the pontoons are mounted at a 45º angle out to the deck, setting them outward about a foot each, thereby giving the pontoons about a 10’ wide stance.
the Bob Ross of boat building
This would be GREAT time spent with a child too. Think of the memories he/she would have.
"Just an old plywood boat 75 Johnson electric choke" 🎶 🎵
Cool, I have the same ballpen.
I made an 8 ft boat out of regular 3/4" plywood and 2x12s with a 48" radius cut off the front and scored the plywood every inch or so on the inside about 1/2" deep to help make the radius. Put a bead of silicone on all the mating surfaces then screwed it down with 1 1/2 deck screws , then put a gallon of Thompson's Water seal in a Hudson sprayer and kept giving it a coat every 20 minutes or so. Added some angle iron at the transom and put a 5 hp Mercury on it. I used it for lake fishing for 4 years and gave it to the people who bought my house, it was still it perfect shape. That was in 1983
I've heard all the advantages to using marine grade ply and all the problems with using exterior grade Yada yada yada... But I've yet to see a boat made exterior grade plywood fall apart quickly. I'm no purest so I enjoy comments from people like yourself! Thanks!
Thanks for the perfect video. No obnoxious music covering what is being said and great hands on, play by play directions. I have never used gorilla glue so I don't know if there are different types. Is this foaming glue just regular or special for water. I want to build a high top for a van and am thinking this is the route to go. Also what are the three types of woods he used? I think what I heard him say he was using 5/8" marine grade plywood and yellow something and something oak. Thanks.
Thanks for sharing
good Video, this design would be a great easy design to build Skiffs for anyone that lived onthe water or close by as with their flat bottoms you could easily stack several of them on top of another. For offseason storage out of the weather perhaps even in a enclosed trailer or on a flat trailer that could be parked in a garage or shed
Awesome video!
Great job 👍
Very good job thank you.
great video
Look how that shape looks! :o 12:54, so cool, i think those guys have more than 20 years of experience :)
The only thing I would take out of this is part of the design in the marine plywood Poplar in red Oak or not the best choice for a boat especially the expose site Whiteoak and Cedar now you got a boat
That being said I might build one this weekend got a love that gorilla glue
Man I wanted to see it in the water, GREAT VIDEO THOUGH!
JDrewism czcams.com/video/nlf1CSOS5DA/video.html
Nice and easy!!
Good video. Good explanation of the steps. With this video, you should be able to modify to suit your own preferences. Longer, narrower whatever your heart desires. Great tips for a novice boat builder like me.
I have one question though. You made the transom with a 3 deg. angle. Why didn't you cut the bottom of the sides at 3 deg? And the inside cleats they are fastened to?
cool boat
Nice work great video
Amazing..!!
I love this! What do y'all think would need to be modified, if at all, to add a small outboard to it?
cool~ thanks for postng such.. really helpful hihihi
That glue is amazing ,buying that stuff
Don't know why I watched this video, I could't build a birdhouse, it's just that wood skills impress the hell outta me.
They can't build a boat either. They built a box.
You like to watch a couple of men work on their wood together.
yeah nice Jonboat.
I've got some wood skillz if you wanna take a look...
jk
Marine plywood has 1 or 2 extra plus depending on thickness. Much stronger.
Agreed. Anyone know where there is a list of measurements and types of wood?
Ronald Reed Cost prohibits using new marine plywood. Afriend bought a boat made from chipboard , was sealed good and really ok Had a chev corvair engine and small aircraft prop.. chipboard held up ok because it had been taken care of.. He used it all for a pattern and built a new boat from recycled signboards from old US 66. ( hi grade marine plywood with Fiberglas) on one side . Save all f g scraps and used May work for you.them to seal sloppy fitting seams.
There are a wide variety of plywood products available that are suitable to boat building. Depends on what you need to get the results required. There are European marine and even aircraft grade plys with beautiful exotic top layers. Modern sheathings and coatings increase the longevity.
@@slackbomslack6212 the plywood looked like very standard construction plywood (though they reference it as marine grade) and those boards were poplar. I would not recommend poplar. I'd recommend white oak or even live oak unless you have some cedar on hand. I dont recommend a solid board for the side walls of the boat. I also dont recommend such a box sort of design. But then I have never built a boat. Have a dozen books on boat building and have worked wood 30 years but I'm yet to build my boat.
@@thornyturtleranch6152 LOL My friend this boat is Perfect for shallow bays, lagoons and swamps. It's just a plywood version of a flatboat. It's not made to cut through 5 ft seas miles offshore in the gulf!
This guy is channeling Bob Ross. Well done.
I like all the negative comments I'm seeing from all the master boat builders that haven't posted their videos.
@Robert, I clicked your channel to see what kind of video expert you are, and you only have one "video" that isn't even a video! LOL It's a slide show! haha With as many dislikes as likes. LOL The video you're criticizing has over 1.5 MILLION views, and over 5,200 likes. I think you have 4, if you don't let the dislikes cancel them. LOL And if you don't like my responding to your shit "video" and shit "comment", then you shouldn't comment on youtube. And for the record, I'm a decent carpenter, and I found this video interesting and fun to watch. So it has ALOT more value than anything you can produce.
It’s not rocket science is it ?
Robert I
Don’t have any videos up, probably should. Working on my second boat build. First was 16’ Dory and this one is 24’ Fishing Dory. Don’t have any negative comments either though. If everyone would build a boat, there would be less bickering on here. Great fun and the end result is valuable. Not to mention getting to tell everyone; “Yep I bulit this boat form the stem to stern.” The ladies smile and the guys turn green. Everyone should give it a go, you will like it. You learn a lot building a boat.
Back in the 50's my Great uncle who Lived on the Bank of Cache river Often Built boats like this from Cypress Boards with Tar Pressed into all the Joints--when boat was put into the water, the boards would Swell pressing the Tar tightly between the joints. These Boats where Quiet and Good for Crappie Fishing...
randy beard I’m somewhat familiar with the Cache and cypress boats you may be able to use cypress sides at less than 1”if you can acquire it in your area. You are are on the right track. I learned so much about wooden boats and big duck gun from the old men around Thebes and now I are one haha.
Hi guys brilliantly explained video . could I use ply for the sides with a hardwood top bead
Perhaps, but the satisfaction of floating and fishing in your own hand-built boat is not to be overlooked.
KYAfield those that are negative about the project have missed the whole point, and beginners can build them with out to much trouble , I for one think it’s a very nice little boat and it will serve its purpose camping up river, fishing, hunting . It’s all round a very handy boat. Think I will build one myself .cheers.
interesting points ,if anyone else wants to discover home boat building plans try Joolaim Rudder Replication (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my partner got amazing success with it.
@@fishmut you aren't going to get anywhere fast in it, it's basically a wooden box, just as easy to find a better plan with the same building system
@@colstace2560 Not just as easy. Anything that's not square is going to have compound angles and curves that make the job much harder. If you're a beginner, or you just want a boat fast, this is the hull for the job. I built one myself several years ago.
@@colstace2560 the point was to build a simple boat that anyone can build on the cheap. If you want a fast boat then don't build a Jon-boat as we call them around here. They are perfect for some pond fishing though. easily pushed around with oars or even just a trolling motor, and extremely stable which is what you want if you are fishing a small lake or a pond. I like it. I already have factory built canoes, kayaks, and aluminum V-bottom boats that are good for various purposes... this boat design is excellent for fishing or duck hunting on still waters. Also good for smaller kids to take out alone (on a pond with proper life jackets) since it is so stable.
Personally I would angle out the front and put a layer of fiberglass on it (outside only) before adding the runners on the bottom, and painting it. I would also remove the original screws and put final screws from the outside in.
No offense intended. I wasn't trying to lecture you, just addressing your concerns.
I have built this boat ( My way cas I wanted higher sides & seats higher so if i was sitting for a long time my knees & back would not be cramped, but close to this plan tho ) & it is an awesome awesome boat but the ply will delaminate & rot out very fast if you do not glass it or seal it with a very good sealer.
Interesting!
Cool jon boat.
This use to be how ALL boats were made. With a little innovation you could greatly reduce the weight by using different materials for the marine grade plywood - which by the way is EXPENSIVE stuff! :) Good video and clearly explained.
How nice video!!! Great job! Very detailed!
A question ... how much can the wooden parts (mast etc.) of a gaff rigged spray 40, that have never been treated... which have been lying on the boat for more than 10 years in direct outdoor conditions of Franch canals, could serve me?
keep it up
Thanks!
Nice box.
