Wow, this is awesome. For all us new pilots looking to build our first RC planes we learn that everything does not need to be super complicated and perfect! Before i was afraid i wouldnt be able to build an RC plane but this video gave me confidence, this plane might not look the best or be perfect but it is PERFECT for a beginner plane! Thanks so much!

I probably should recommend the motor mount and other wooden parts glued to the foam need anchors into the foam for strength. Hot glue works fine for a while, but vibrations common to RC airplane models will fatigue the foam bond. The foam will tear away near the glue over time. I suppose that doesn't matter if you tend to crash your models soon after construction. A simple way to reduce the effects of the vibrations is to drill small holes through the wood parts and into the foam board. A bit of wooden dowel rod not much larger than round toothpicks will add strength to the joints, or just use the fattest round toothpicks you can find. Drill 4 holes a little back from the corners of the wood motor mount, so as not to get in the way of the screws that hold the motor to the wood, and around 2", or more into the foam will do the trick. I tend to put the round toothpicks halfway between the corners near the edge of the motor mount so the wood motor mount can be glued in place and the reinforcement can be added later. Same with other wooden parts glue to the foam.

I am a big fan of RC Groups and the many simple trainer build threads they have. I would recommend the Blu Baby project as a good one to start with, but there are others as good. The catch is the foam used is hard to find, which had a huge influence on the name of the project. These days a builder would have to use the Dollar Tree store Adams Readi-board, which is a paper coated foam cored poster board. and stiffen the soft foam a little with a thin, lightweight packing tape, or some other option. There is also the Flight Test foam board option from the same source, but with brown paper skins. Could offer more about the options, but don't want to hog the comments.

It’s easy to make this hobby too complicated. I’ve been crashing everything lately, so taking a step backwards is a good idea. I think I’ll have a go at something like this. It doesn’t matter what you fly, so long as you fly!

    • @wattwaster5936

There are a few ways to more, or less crash proof a foam airplane of this simple design. The key is to use slightly different construction methods to keep the project super lightweight and reinforce as needed with lightweight materials. Carbon fiber rods, squares, tubes, and strips were popular ways of crash proofing foam model airplanes in the past, but that option has become too expensive. There is a guy that makes videos about crash proofing models offered in Hobby stores. Worth investigating.

There are a lot of skills shown in this video and he makes it look easy, but each skill takes time to learn to do well. Clearly, this isn't his first RC model airplane build and anyone new to the hobby should expect equal, or better results the first time. There are a lot of details about the model he didn't detail, but it would take a series of videos to cover the many details well enough for a first time builder/pilot. It would be a good idea to watch other videos of builds like this for those details and what can be done wrong easily until you know better.

If you have access to a Dollar Tree store, an arts and craft store, or other options that sell thin foam poster board (Adams Readi Board) with the paper skins on both sides, you can remove the paper on one, or both sides and make the rudder and stabilizer out of it, gluing foam to foam for a double thick part. The think foam poster board is often only 5mm, or 1/4" thick, but is easy to work with and lots of RC airplane builders/pilots use it for their entire flying model. Just don't glob on the hot glue and expect the model to be lightweight. Instead, learn to apply a foaming glue like the Gorilla brand urethane glue, or non foaming version in a very thin application that will form a super strong lamination joint without adding any real weight. Light weight models fly well with the recommended power pack offered if you finish the installation with a very slight nose heavy CG. Normally the battery pack placement and confinement helps to determine the best CG for the model airplane.

@@MasboyRC Nice. Did you see what the guys at Flight Test did with that idea? I am thinking of more than a few projects they did and a few I did that were inspired by the Mario game "Bullet Bill". I used the water, soda, and other liquid drinks with the smooth bottle design. If you cut off the bottom, the remaining plastic bottle looks like a bullet with a cap, which I cut off. Filled the hole in various ways, but the fuselage was round and could be extended with a foam tube I cold roll out of thin foam board. It can be built as a tractor design, or a pusher. All you need then is wings, stabilizer, and some sort of rudder design, or as a flying wing configuration. Simple, cheap, lightweight, and easy to repair, or replace parts. If a guy, or gal isn't careful, this idea can lead to all sorts of flying projects with various changes.

Quick question. Is that motor good enough for a piper cub model with a 1m wingspan? (Over all weight will probably be under a kg of the plane)
EDIT: my piper crashed badly and i made a new plane. An FT Mustang with some modifications of my own... it flies BEAUTIFULLY, has crashed a few times but I consider it a success even in terms of flying the thing because it is a warbird afterall and since I never actually flew the piper as the longest it flew was 9 seconds, Im pretty good at flying the mustang! Even in WIND! well, i still need to work on my landings but ill get there- Yesterday was my second ever flight of the plane and im already doing low passes, barrel rolls and loops! I do have prior experience to RC as i used to fly helicopters and quads but never flew a plane... But yeah, its free therapy for me! Its fun!

In more than a few ways you are correct. It depends on what you think is cheap, or too expensive. Compared to other RC parts options, this would be cheap and good enough to get started in the hobby. The catch is the hobby isn't cheap compared to other entertainment options. If you crash your airplanes like most people do when getting started in this hobby, it will get expensive real fast, so the trick is to learn how to take small steps to learn how RC planes fly well, or not. The brain needs time to learn how to control an object that flies away and back towards the RC pilot, since each is a very different event.
