I think the biggest reason why mamamoo has a larger female fanbase is because of their women empowerment message and their promotion of different types of bodies, styles and personalities among females. Something like, you don't have to fit imposible beauty standards but be yourself. Also they have showed their support to lgbt community several times, so they have a big lgbt fanbase, mostly women. I think their extreme difference between genders is mostly in south korean fanbase, I think international fandom could have a bit more of male fans

Happy birthday to our queen hamster Moonbyulie!!! My ultimate bias is Wheein but I've been obsessing over Moonbyul contents these past few days. I admire her so much that I might switch lanes at this rate! lol. In the show In Sync, they were asked to choose a duet partner amongst an amazing lineup of male singers. And I was so amazed at how Moonbyul approached that show. She wanted to learn and improve. So although she came in with a "female rapper" label, instead of rapping, she SANG in all of the song choices that she performed in (with 3 male duet partners specialized in 3 different styles of music). Everybody was like "Wait, she can sing?? She can sing!!" "Why is she a rapper?". And amongst the other female casts, Ms. Moon was in demand. Men were fighting over her. LOL. Her power.

Their largely female fanbase was part of why I felt safe to Stan in the first place - as a (mostly) straight guy I’m really wary of the way kpop courts the male gaze with very young women. Even when Mamamoo get sexy I get the impression it’s because they feel it within themselves, not because they’re expected to (though that’s still in the mix, as it is with all entertainers). They’re clearly doing something right to be breaking through the usual gendered fanbase anyway haha.

  • @kalaksed
    @kalaksed Před 3 lety +140

others have explained a bit on why their fanbase is so predominantly female (esp in korea. it isn't quite so heavily female internationally, but still leans quite a bit that way). there are three main reasons for this, though they're all pretty intertwined
the first reason is their appearance, their style, even their attitude. they don't fit into the standard views on what a kpop girl group should look like, sound like or even act like, and even when they debuted they were a bit older than when many other female idols debut (wheein and hwasa, the youngest of the group were around the age that the eldest in many other groups debut at). because of this and because of the fact that they didn't focus on 'cute and innocent' or 'girl crush' like most girl groups are made to, they didn't get a lot of interest from the typical male fans of other kpop groups. but they did catch the interest of a lot of women precisely because they were different. the fact that these four are unabashedly themselves at all times just ensured many of those that gave them a chance stayed with them
their sound was so different from the usual kpop that it attracted older women who generally don't get into kpop. the innuendo in several of their songs also helped with that. many of mamamoo's first fans were housewives who looked upon the girls like their daughters (and many still do). many of these women couldn't manage to go to fanmeets and such (having kids or work or the like to take care of) but they helped the fandom initially form itself differently from most other fandoms. they set up a series of ground rules that are mostly adhered to to this day (i mentioned some of those in a reply to another comment)
the second reason, while being entirely separate, also ties into that. the messages in much of their music. and the fact that they're involved in the creation of much of it, whether it be lyrics, composing, producing, creating choreo or just giving suggestions on a theme or concept or tweaks to a song someone else wrote. they've vetoed songs written by one of their company's ceos, who instantly scrapped said songs and worked from the ground up with the girls to create something more along the lines of what they wanted. this is one of the reasons much of their music revolves around, or includes, both self-empowerment and female empowerment. those are both things they've seen firsthand that need to be constantly brought up, both to foster growth within individuals and to get the concepts to take root as normal things... you're worthwhile as you are, and women don't have to be subservient to men, despite what tradition has always said... the fact that these women encapsulate that within catchy songs ensures many of them become known as 'girl power' anthems
and the fact that the girls don't just sing them as empty words is a huge deal, too. they definitely practice what they preach, and it's easy to see even without deep diving into their personalities or the behind the scenes stuff or whatnot, though all of that firmly solidifies that idea. these four women are constantly striving for better treatment of all women (particularly in south korea, but not just there), both loudly and quietly, and they never back down when someone tries to push them to. instead, they stand their ground and push right back. the combination of that attitude and the lyrics from their empowerment songs garners attention from women looking for rolemodels, those that wish they could be like those women... and often enough, constantly hearing the empowerment in those lyrics actually helps a lot of these women become exactly what they wished they could be
the third reason is their open acceptance of lgbtq+ fans, again, in both big and small ways. their song "um oh ah yeah" is considered a gay anthem by many and gets played at virtually every pride festival in south korea. there's a group of fans called rainbow moos that mamamoo are exceptionally proud of and openly wear pins for, as well as posing with pride flags. and it's more than just lip service, as well. wheein's "goodbye" has a wlw twist to it, mamamoo's fancafe is considered one of the safer places for gay koreans to openly be themselves in still-conservative south korea, the girls (particularly byul and hwasa) even recognize gay fans at fanmeets (lately the video kind, which get shared) and ask how their girlfriends are, which has always shocked said fans, who didn't expect anyone to remember something like that. ...i could talk about so much more here, but this comment is already the length of a novel...
...so, yeah, the girls don't fit the mold, they preach empowerment, and they openly accept the gay community. so of course a lot of lesbians would decide to check them out upon hearing that... and the fact that their music is always top notch and constantly changes ensures they stay... so, much of mamamoo's fandom winds up being female even though you expect women to like boy groups, and a fair chunk of that fandom is also gay. i don't know if there are any hard numbers on gay vs straight in the fandom, but i do expect it to skew more towards the former than pretty much any other girl group out there

We females like powerful & authentic women that's why! I mean I guess it is stereotypical for korean men to be the target audience for girly kpop girl groups & you can hear men in the crowd the most when it comes to groups like Twice but there are still females (korean or international) who enjoy girl groups in general. However, I think with Mamamoo they happen to be more unique & create lots of songs that have to do with women empowerment. In general thought they attract everyone because of their amazing talent & personalities!

Mamamoo are huge fans of 2ne1 there is more than a 10 years gap between the oldest of 2ne1 (Bom;1984) and the youngest of mamamoo (Hwasa;1995) that's maybe why they still seem young compare to 2ne1 but i kinda see your point Minzy is almost the same age of our youngest even tho there aren't from the same generation of kpop. Hwasa was shown crying during the M!Countdown encore stage when Mamamoo won #1 and a fan asked her why. She answered “Ah, that time... I shook hands with Park Bom sunbaenim. Ever since middle school, I watched lots of 2NE1 sunbaenim’s videos and danced their dances with Wheein, and now I was shaking hands with Park Bom sunbaenim so (thinking about it just) made me tear up”

My thoughts on predominantly female fans of Mamamoo. Though MMM's concepts have been constantly changing over the years, they are consistent in exuding confident, alpha female vibes and typical fanboys don't like/can't handle that. Most fanboys want their girl groups to be cute and pretty in miniskirts, doing aegyo and appealing to them. MMM hates acting cute and won't bend over to get any male's attention. They are marketed as artists, not your imaginary girlfriend. That's why I have mad respect for the few male Moomoos who than stan these ladies for being the great artists that they are.

It's so great that you even learn Hangul. MAMAMOO has a lot of male fans, too. But the reason why it's especially popular with female fans is because they have very high skill and talent in their field, and they seem to have more high self-esteem and modern lyrics than appealing to men. I'm a man, and I love Mamamoo very much. I enjoyed the video.

I think the reason why they have more female audience is because 1st They appear way too strongly to male audience in korea which I think most of them aren’t into that kinda women,,, most guys in korea prefer girly and chicky, that kind of sweet stuff. 2nd mamamoo girlies are heavily influential to the reset of korea’s beauty standards set for females. They basically took that shit down and have put on positivity and so much confidence to women of different body types, clothing styles, and sexuality. As they’ve been empowering women from all over the world esp in south korea (which known to have strict gender conventions), females have become more inspired to follow the footsteps of these girls. 3rd they’re such an inclusive girl group which is very rare in kpop. they’re unapologetically themselves, despite living in a conservative country, they still chose to be vocal of lgbtq+ and build a safe space for lgbtq+ women

I never understood Korea's obsession with this... Let's call it artificial beauty. Hence why I never really got into kpop (my American soul doesn't vibe with bubblegum pop, albeit I'm a HUGE sucker for taeyeon and every song she sings) but mamamoo just hits different. Mamamoo has a huge female fanbase because they look beautiful but in a way that regular women can aspire to emulate, their songs speak to our life experiences, their vocals are on point at all times(except for when Solar's voice cracked recently and they were all dunking on her 😂), and of course some of us are LGBT and Mamamoo are our ultimate wifey club. 🥰 Mamamoo TV shows who they are as people and it turns out they're just regular people who basically become the K-Pop Avengers/meme factories while at work.
A lot of solo activities have come out in the past few days. Hwasa and Wheein both had collabs, Moonbyul and Hwasa dropped solo tracks, and Solar opened an IG, did a ton of Solarsido content, and appeared on Henry Lau's channel. Somehow Mamamoo is keeping the Moo Moos fed this holiday season.

There is a reason why Mamamoo are the true Vocal Queens. As a female group or individually, they are such talented artists and carry a level of their own.
Why are their fan base mostly females, I believe because even females ( who are generally considered to be more into boy groups ) can't help but acknowledge and respect their talents and greatness. Mamamoo make us proud. I am so glad that I am able to experience them in my lifetime. To me, they are one of the best female groups of the world. I love them so much.❤

1:01 2:56 and a few other performances shown are all from a show called Immortal Songs which Mamamoo were somewhat regulars on and alot of people say that Immortal Songs was one of the reasons they became so big bc they're stages are literally iconic ✨
Immortal Songs is a show where they have a bunch of 'newer' artists come on and cover/twist older artists songs, usually on each episode there would be an assigned producer/singer
(Mamamoo also sung a medley of some of their Immortal Songs)

To be fair 2NE1 are much older (on average although Minzy is still super young) to the point where Wheein and Hwasa used to listen to them in middle school and were big fans of them. Mamamoo on average looked much older on debut because of their concept but Wheein and Hwasa are 95ers so in 2014 were only 19 years old around debut.
And Solar although she did debut a bit later than average in kpop was only 23 years old back then. After 6 years I think they don't have the super youthful image of course but because they can challenge themselves to do anything and are so versatile with their concepts and their average age is still young - they come off that way 😁

With mamamoo occurred the same phenomenon of Ariana Grande. In Ariana's beginnings, she had to "show off" the power of her voice in the first albums but through time with a solid fanbase, she gave herself the luxury of sing songs that require less effort. The same case with mamamoo; their songs during the first years were vocally demanding and they kill it! they show off their vocals! and rn they can perform less demanding songs. If we compare the level of difficulty from Piano Man and You're the Best to Aya or Dingga, we could say that they chill a little bit. No matter the song, the era, the genre...their vocals are another level

But I will say at 5:52 I will have to disagree I think Red Velvet is an Amazing Group that only eat CDs for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner their Vocals are Insane and are probably giving Mamamoo a run for their money (That's my opinion you don't have to agree with it if you don't feel the same way!)
