When Justin finds the fate of Nicodemus, his reaction just goes right through you. You can tell how much he supported Nicodemus' decisions and trusted him.
The grief in his voice when he says “oh no” is palpable and hits you in the heart and gut!

I'm 99% sure the man in the blue bathrobe answering the phone is Don Bluth himself - I've been watching interviews of him lately and the character has a lot of his speech patterns.
He didn't. Farmer Fitzgibbons was voiced by Tom Hatten.

Watching this as a 50 year adult. Mrs Brisby was fucking awesome. As a little boy I was into the spectacle of animation and Jenner. Always have been a villain fan. But yeah, Mrs Brisby was great.

They very well could've reused some of the animation. "An American Tail" reused animation multiple times, both from itself and from "The Secret of NIMH."

The muddy rain in the moving block scene looks like a good background design for a Don Bluth film taking place in the First World War.

The mother mouse reminds me of the Raptors in jurrasic park cause of her problem solving mind.
And Jenner reminds me of Dodgson, from his personality to his tendency to abuse and murder people/leaving them to die, including his own henchmen.

I’d wager none, so I always looked at this as that she didn’t know how to/didn’t think or believe she could get out of it in such a manner.

NIMH is a real labrotory in Maryland but it's real and fantasy I'm sorry for Nicodemus.
Same here, because Nicodemus does a great job while Justin does a much better job on leading the rats than their worst enemy Jenner.

It feels and looks like the original animated version of Lord of the Rings.

Question: Altogether, how many rats of NIMH are there meant to be living in the rosebush? In the flashback, Nicodemus says that 20 rats were given injections, however, the animation would suggest there are more than that. There seem to be about 15 of them pushing the wheel alone. That's not counting Nicodemus, Jenner or Sullivan. It is plausible that Justin and Brutus are among those pushing(we can't see where Justin is). Are any of them supposed to be the same rats seen earlier in the council? The rat's seen here all seem much more robust than some of those who appeared in the council chamber. Are we meant to believe that ALL the rats living in the rosebush are present at the house raising?
The rats married and had children like Jonathan
20 rats injected and escaped with the help of the only 2 surviving mice (Jonathan Frisby and Mr Ages). Then had a bunch of pups and grew to over 100 members.

I always thought it was so anticlimactic that Mrs. Brisby didn't have some sort of bigger final moment with Dragon since he was the one who killed her husband. But.. nope.
I think it's better that she didn't. Nowadays, they'd insist on her taking Dragon down nonchalantly...
It might be a subtle commentary on the writers view on revenge.
Dragon is a cat who eats mice and rats, not a villain like Jenner.
@@PeachWookiee I know. The fact that Mrs. Brisby is basically moving heaven and earth while half the time leaving tiny little mouse-sized bricks behind her is how bravery should be depicted. She's terrified but that doesn't stop her.
@@boldbearings Exactly. Besides, it's in Mrs. Brisby's character to simply accept her losses and provide for her family. Revenge against Dragon would be like revenge against a tornado. To her, Dragon just is what he is, a dangerous predator, and Jonathan just was the mouse he happened to target. He probably wasn't the first cat on the farm, and he likely won't be the last.

And Jenner was using the knowledge he gained to be more evil and not smarter if he was from NIHM and got his injection or was spawn in the rose bush
If the Rats had their own version of OSHA then Nicodemus would’ve been fine. Don’t stand under moving construction equipment.

holy shit, they even added in the way water will distort the way submerged things look when she dunks her arm in the bowl
3:34 Up to this day, I'm still trying to figure out the position of Nicodemus's body.
The body contorts into amazing g positions when mangled. XD
Considering how heavy all that equipment was that crushed him, I almost don't want to imagine it. Also take into account that he was old and probably very frail, his poor body was probably broken and mangled into a unimaginable mess that only his dangling arm was allowed to be shown.
This was a "kids movie" mind you.

The block didnt kill him. the gears that was used to move the block did. And only his arm shown. So basically he drowned.
Actually, the speed at which the machinery came at him probably meant vertebrae were snapped and the spinal cord was severed. Unaliving was probably immediate.

Sometimes. The tractor definitely was.
Yep. Scenes like this and the one with the lantern elevator were accomplished by filming real-life props and then rotoscoping over them.
@@renatashp Yep-it was. Actual props filmed then rotoscoped over. There was no CGI involved.
Wasn't it 12 rats that were given injections. There is at least 15 pushing the wheel, they are all dressed the same, and all appear to be male, plus there is Brutus above and Nicodemus and Jonathan and the two antagonists. Presumably there are females among them somewhere.
its been a number of years. so they have reproduced. the council meeting had a few females. read the three novels

you didn't know that the cage was made in CGI for the first time in early 1980s?
I don’t think CGI was used here. Instead real videos were used a references and the animated frames were drawn using a rotoscope.
@@caesar7734 yep you are correct. Still amazing to have to paint each cel with all of those bars. Multi plane cameras were still used when this was made! The first film that used computers to help was Beauty and the Beast.
