  • A Tribe Called Quest is one of the most celebrated and influential hip hop groups of all time. Consisting of official members Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Jarobi, and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, the gorup first formed in new York City in 1985 before exploding onto the scene in the ealy 90's with their legendary albums "People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rythm," "The Low End Theory," and "Midnight Marauders."
They also formed close relationships along the way with Busta Rhymes, De La Soul, and the Native Tongues collective before calling it quits. But in 2016, they reunited for one final album, recorded before the untimely death of Phife Dawg from diabetes. Here's the Untold Truth of A Tribe Called Quest.

If you asked me what my favorite song or album, I don't have one I've followed this group since they dropped I was already following Jungle Brothers and De la Soul.
So after following them for over thirty years and still having their music in heavy rotation, I believe that "We got it from here ... Thank you for your service"was their magnum opus.
The symmetry with Phife passing and all the political bullying that was transpiring at the time of the release made it the album we needed in rap.. 2016 was a rough year lost 3 heroes my mom, Prince and Phife Dawg. That being said I think "Thank You" was their absolute best because they took rap back to its roots where we addressed and brought awareness to the horrible ways of the world.

I really liked the documentary when I saw it in the theater. But now, it’s difficult to watch because of all the fighting. I think Tribe is one of the greatest (if not the greatest) Hip Hop groups of all time. The first four records are flawless, with the Low End Theory being their greatest accomplishment. There’s not a song I skip on any of those records. 100, 200, 300 years from now, I hope young people will still be bumpin’ Tribe’s records and will be inspired by their music.

A lot of NME reading rock heads fell silent after that album. Suddenly you started hearing indie rock records with samples and rapping, although the Chilli Peppers were doing that from the 80s tbf.

Now this is a great group of friends who started a great group and was really the ones who overcame adversity to become a great group of rappers whose style wasn't the average blueprint!!!!!! Of The rap music of the time !!!! They rapped about rising above the violence and guns and all the wickedness in the streets!!!!!!!? And a lot of other groups were dismissed by the rap community because of the things they were rapping about!!!? And appealing to a much wider audience!!!!!!!? And Hell's KRS-1 was bum rushing PM- Dawn!!!!" On stage and carrying on like a fool!!! I'm soo glad that KRS-1 started getting himself straight after that!!!!!!? Lol" But this group was fly!!!! And had street swagger and a positive message!!!!? After telling you the stories about the streets !!!? But their Rap royalty still today!!!! Didn't they make it into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame!!!!?? Well let me continue watching this video and check out the straight street coolest mugs ever 😎!!!!! God bless you all today Shalom 🙏

But PM Dawn was pop, and Hip Hop wasn't about that (then). Along with MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice, they were seen as intruders in the game. As Q-Tip said in Check The Rhyme:
      Rap isn't pop
If you call it that then STOP!

I understand what Dave ("Trugoy") RIH meant wit' Native Tongues really has "no order" or hiearchy...TRUE...but it does stem off of the Jungle Brothers and Kool DJ Red Alert which now goes back to the Jazzy 5, and Soul Sonic Force...then, Zulu Nation!!! That Soul Sonic Force/Jazzy 5 connection was too close...you got Jazzy Jay rock'n wit' both...probably an emcee or two (I forgot)! Bam, of course! So, that "Native Tongue" thang was more serious [even if it was for the fans, if nothin' else] than maybe what they took it as! Jungle Brothers is the fathers...they already in cohoosts with Ultra Magnetic/BDP, etc.! Q-Tip is like Jungle Brother #4 ("Black Is Black", "Promo No. 1", and the classic "Promo No. 2"). Then, De La Soul on the same or similar vibe...stem'n from DJ Prince Paul 'n that Stetson Brothers (later, "StetsaSonic") vibe!!! Then, Latifah, through the DJ Mark, the 45 King (who is originally a Bronx native) out in my neck of the woods in North Central Jersey -- the Flava Unit Squad out in Essex County (Newark/East Orange/Irvington/Jersey City is in Hudson County)...Black Sheep, Chi Ali, Money Love, even Leaders of the New School (who started wit' PE's Bomb Squad camp)...spawned heads like Kayne West, J Dilla, Dee-Lite, Consequence, Mos Def, Lucy Pearl, etc.

That GEORGY PORGY bit was crowbarred in there. It seemed out of place. Toto and MC Lyte already made songs with GEORGY PORGY in the title, and they were successful. Luther Vandross and Charme also had a great cover of Toto's song.
