"I Enjoy Being A Girl" - Carol Burnett, Chita Rivera, Caterina Valente ala Morticia Addams

- In honor of Halloween, here is a fun version of "I Enjoy Being a Girl," performed by Carol Burnett, Chita Rivera and Caterina Valente dressed up like Morticia Addams. I think it's from The Garry Moore Show and has a cameo by Boris Karloff....who shows up at the end to do, of all things, a version of "Chim Chim Cher-ee" from Mary Poppins
EDIT: thanks for the correction that it’s actually from The Entertainers. As it was on a tape with a lot of Garry Moore clips…and IMDB seemed to bear it out (and sorry Boris is truncated. As it was a collection of Chita clips… the one who initially transferred must have hit stop before we would wish…) - Zábava
This justifies CZcams existing. How many other places does this even still exist, much less in a way that people can find out about it?
YT controllers like witch narratives and anything else linked to the dark side but they work very trying to suppress the truth
Agreed!
Rumble or Odyssey, for starters.
Agreed!!
I think the reason such clips are so "rare" is that it appears to be more lucrative to the rights holders to sit on their copyrights and license a fraction of 1% out to the rare documentary that wishes to use them, than to make them all available to us to begin with. So they sit and get forgotten, until anyone who might be interested is dead and gone.
This. This is why the internet was invented. Mission accomplished.
❤️❤️❤️
Carol took such crazy risks with these numbers. Of course it helps that her guests were stage and concert performers with great ears and able to nail these routines. I cannot think of anyone today who could do this weekly
I agree except this wasn’t on her show.
@@armpitification True, but she was outstanding on the Gary Moore show as well. A bit before my time, but she has stated in interviews how much being on this show shaped her style, she was given a lot of room to express herself. There's a clip on YT of a Supergirl sketch she did on the Gary Moore show that's definitely worth checking out.
For the record, the uploader is mistaken: this isn't "The Garry Moore Show" either. It's "The Entertainers," which was on CBS in 64/65, after she left Garry but before her own show. But the point stands that she was so often willing to take a risk for a laugh, and we can see the payoff.
This is not from.the Carol Burnett Show.
...and, to correct my earlier (incorrect) point about this being too early to be Morticia: The Entertainers was broadcast during the 1964/1965 season. This would put it exactly in the same season both The Addams Family and The Monsters premiered. (I'm so embarrassed when I spread misinformation!)
The Carol Burnett Show had the most fantastic sets, costumes, comedy: and featured many leading black artists. Her show is still worth watching today.
A genuine trailblazer!
This isn't her show, though; it was never in black & white.
Description says Gary Moore show but yes Carol's show was the best
This is actually "The Entertainers," a CBS variety show from '64/'65 with Carol, Caterina, and Bob Newhart as the regular hosts and Chita and Boris as guests this week. Few episodes have survived, so it's little remembered.
I am blessed that this was still on TV (reruns) when I was younger. I have laughed so hard at so many of their skits to the point I couldn't breathe. These actors, comedians were so talented.
Can we take a minute to appreciate how astonishingly tight their harmonies are?
I miss variety shows! Growing up in the 60s and 70s there was a variety show or a special on every week.
I know, huh? There was a certain 'special something' about the 60's and 70's! 😢
People get amazed when I tell them Julie Andrews had a variety show. 😄
Sonny and Cher/Donny and Marie were my faves!!
i miss them too! So much! Often pretty darned wholesome too!
Mr Karloff is superb. His vocals made the Grinch the classic it is today and forever!
Also Thurl Ravenscroft!
@@merryvollmer1924 Absolutely!
And an absolute pussycat in real life, too
And his LACK of vocals (a few grunts and groans notwithstanding) made Universal's 1931 Frankenstein the classic it is today ...
I love the soft tones of his voice. Here's a stretch, how about Boris Karlof as Atticus Finch? Times permitting it would have worked.
Marvelous trio. Most audiences will have no idea how hard it is to make this performance look spontaneous. The precision was extraordinary!
There is nothing about this performance that says "spontaneous" to me. It looks quite well rehearsed and choreographed.
@@jamesmcinnis208 When performers are ill prepared they fudge harmony, look to feet for guidance. It ruins the idea of spontaneity. These performers are very sure of themselves. They make it look easy.
@@stevehinnenkamp5625 True!
Yes it was indeed . All at the top of thier game .
This has got to be one of the wackiest things that I've ever watched and I simply loved every minute of it. This was pure talent. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Ditto!! Sooo entertaining and creative!
Boris Karloff at the beginning and end!..the original Frankenstein Monster 1931! A Legend of film/theater
@Commodore 64 Ok, Karen. Go back to mommy's basement.
@@VanBrujah - I don't think Commodore 64 has managed to escape mommy's basement yet...
In fact, I suspect she won't let it go outside 'til it finishes potty training.
( Can't have it shitting in the neighbor's yard, after all. )
Beat me to it. I'm glad we've moved on from that time in many ways, but there's stuff from then that's unbeatable.
Boris what a treat! What a beautiful voice!
I knew Chita and Carol would be great in this number - but the big surprise to me is Caterina Valente. Her comedic instincts are right up there with Carol and Chita.
Who is she?
@@GjpgrD a French singer, still going strong at 90
Caterina Valente is awesome, an absolute superstar. She worked with the greatest musicians and entertainers. Look her up.
Bery famous in the german speaking world!
Three C's, all of them great.
Where has this been all my life?! 😂😂😂 I was born in '74 so this was a decade before me, but I grew up watching the Carol Burnette show and this brings back some memories of her amazing talent. Thank you for sharing!
Actually This is from a Television Show Called the Entertainers, , The Entertainers was a one-hour American variety show which aired on CBS from September 25, 1964 through March 27, 1965. Produced by Joe Hamilton, the series featured three hosts; Hamilton's then-wife Carol Burnett, Bob Newhart, and Caterina Valente.
Thank you!
@Commodore 64 People were used to live shows then, it’s very entertaining if you have learned to appreciate a fresh show every week appearing in your living room every week and you don’t even have to pay for it. Everyone knew the song, the skit probably reappeared in school shows at Halloween next year.
I thought this was great.
@Commodore 64 This performance was from SIXTY YEARS AGO (I'm struggling to refrain from calling you what it is obvious to most of us that you are). It's unfortunate that you were born with a compete dearth of imagination, interest in sociology, history, and humor. I was born in 1963. Throughout my childhood and early twenties, I worked with the Historical Society, restoring homes from the early 1800s and conducting tours through them at the ripe old age of ten years, restoring antique automobiles to ORIGINAL condition (not hopping them up as hotrods), and collecting, restoring antique clothing which we then modeled in a show consisting of spicy fun and humorous commentary with interesting short historical stories of interest, a professional singer performing songs with musical accompaniment, and an authentic Chesleston, performed by my mother, a professional dancer and teacher into her 90s.
You, my dear, are out of your league. And if you do not know or understand what you are talking about, kindly refrain from rudely dismissing it out of hand. Try operating your brain before your mouth and fingers. There is a rich history of personal stories that anyone should be interested in exploring. For it is through history that we avoid repeating the mistakes of the past (such as Hitler and his Nazis arising in America), which is sheer stupidity. If the shoe fits...
@@kristieroybal4888 - You have no idea how hard I had to work NOT to respond to Commode 64, or whatever it's name is.
Glad I didn't, since your response was much better, and far more polite, than mine would have been.
Also, it seems you and I are about the same age.
I very much remember watching things on TV that I'm quite sure the younger crowd would have no appreciation for at all.
In fact, I just had a... er...um... "conversation" with someone concerning the old 1930s and '40s "Tarzan" movies, and Johnny Weissmuller...
The poor kid had no idea that anybody before Disney ever made a movie about the character. lol
Anyway, Carol Burnett, Dean Martin, and a whole host of other "fossils" were favorites of mine, even as a kid.
And I very much miss not having their like on TV anymore. Because the crap that passes for entertainment these days just doesn't cut it for me.
This is from a show called THE ENTERTAINERS. It lasted 1 season this episode is from January 1965
That was cool. All 3 ladies still kicking around too.
OMG! This was wonderful to see! True professional performers at their best and having fun doing it! A classy classic I didn't know existed! Thanks for posting this!
No pitch gates fixing the notes, just singing.
I am Chita's HMU person and when we get to work together I always ask her about something she has done back in the day... I cannot WAIT to ask her about this! Thanks for the upload!
What does HMU stand for? I'm disabled and having Home Medical Aid, but the initials don't quite line up....
@@geekdivaherself Hair and Makeup!

Fergus Saint John, you are a lucky person.
Please come back and tell us what she says.
A shame Boris Karloff's segment was cut. He had a marvelous voice. Carol and her fellow overtalented hams rocked the Morticia song/skit. An early Halloween gift! Ty!
Do we even know what show this was?
@@MaskedMan66 It’s The Carol Burnett Show. I am wondering if it is the season when Mary Poppins was in Theaters?
@@buckjohnson1119 Not this clip; her show was never in black and white. Like the poster said, it's probably from "The Garry Moore Show."
Boris made chim chim cheery sound goulish.
@@MaskedMan66 👍Yes, I didn’t factor in the black and white. I was probably already in bed when that show was aired, when I was a child.
What a bizarre treasure this is!
You nailed it perfectly, Joey!
Carol’s famous Tarzan call!! These 3 makes this skit so much more funny. Love their tribute to the Morticia Addams character, is wonderful. There is a reason why Carol’s show was so famous for 11 season’s and how she got some great guests on her show.
This is such a bizarre number. What I love about it, though, is that it’s from a time when television creators felt more free to take risks without audience testing things to death first. A gem, to be sure, but a very strange one.
Not if it aired on Halloween.
@@jamesmcinnis208 no, it’s STILL really weird.

I expect weird shit from Carol Burnett. LOL.
The writer, director, producers and of course actors and props etc of this show are soo unique (lack of a better word), I love it!
and this is the true origin of Goth.
Fun fact goth has been around since the Victorian era. As early as the 1700’s!

I'm definitely not disappointed this showed up on my feed.
Oh my dad adored Caterina Valente - he had at least half a dozen of her albums when I was a kid. So fun seeing her!
I love the Morticia outfits.
Carol's outfit made her look a lot like Cher.
Should have been, “I Enjoy Being a Ghoul”.

You obviously didn't watch the entire clip, or you would have known that would ruin one of the funny lines in the song. Too bad you're from The Immediate Gratification Club where you miss out on all the immeasurable tiny gifts life holds.

it's so strange to see something so old, from my parents' time and by parents I mean when they were children. and even stranger still to know that some of these performers are still alive today. it's just all around odd and mind boggling. thank you history :)
Thank you present ;)
I know how you feel . I remember finding late night movies that were on back in the 70's ,when I was a teenager and where I first found the likes of Fred Astaire , Ginger Rogers, Joan Crawford, and realizing that Judy Garland did more then just play Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz.
Having lost chita Rivera this week, I was stunned to find this and it's a great one.l
So this is the inspiration behind Beyonce's All the Single Ladies!
Lol at Carol's introduction 😂 I knew she would do something totally different from the other 2 ladies
This just showed up in my feed, I'm so happy it did! I only know of Carol and Boris in this little video. So now I'm looking up the other ladies. I was born in 71 so I grew up watching Carols show. Love her! 💓

That was horrible. I loved it!
Exactly
Three gorgeous, glamourous vampy vixens!
Fantastic memories watching the Carol Burnett show in the 70s. The comedy will never grow old.
This was from the Gary Moore show, where Carol Burnett was to him what Vicky Lawrence or Tim Conway was to Carol.
@@RLucas3000 Thanks for the info. I didn't know she was on Gary Moore. I just adored her own show.
I don't know if this is from the Gary Moore Show, but it was one of my favorites from the time I was in elementary school all the way to high school.
If I remember correctly Carol was leaving the show to star in a Broadway play and Gary, the cast and crew played the biggest prank on Carol on her final performance on the show. Remember, this was all in front of a live audience and being recorded! Gary did tell the audience what we all were about to see happen.
There were props that were missing or out of place, doors that didn't open and nothing was the way it had been rehearsed.
It was absolutely hilarious to watch her as she tried to adlib her way through that sketch. I wish I could see that episode again!
@@annarodriguez9868 I would love to see that episode!!!

this was actually great. If u do a dance with them listening to this, it makes u feel strangely good.
A side of the brilliant Caterina Valente I have never seen. This is why I love CZcams.
She had axing humour and didn't take herself that seriously. Obviously all three didn't. I mis the irony in modern performancers.
Thanks for sharing this classic from 1965!!

Caterina Valente is a wonderful performer: singer, guitarist, dancer. Check this out: czcams.com/video/AuEv942wOZs/video.html
Growing up in Europe, I had often enjoyed watching Ms. Valente but did not know the other two. :-D
Caterina Valente was very popular in Germany during the fifties and sixties and did a lot of movies often with her brother Silvio Francesco. And she had her owen TV show during the fifties called Bonjour Cathrine......she is still alive and living in Switzerland now.

Read the lyrics. So funny!
Lyrics
When I have a brand new hairdo
With my eyelashes all in curls
I float as the clouds on air do
I enjoy being a girl
When men say I'm cute and funny
And my teeth aren't teeth but pearls
I just lap it up like honey
I enjoy being a girl
I flip when a fellow sends me flowers
I drool over dresses made of lace
I talk on the telephone for hours
With a pound and a half of cream upon my face
I'm strictly a female female
And my future I hope will be
In the home of a brave and free male
Who'll enjoy being a guy, having a girl like me
Hi Dianne. Thanks for printing the lyrics to this great Halloween clip. The song 'I Enjoy being a Girl' is from Rodgers and Hammerstein's 1958 musical "Flower Drum Song" which was a big hit at the time on Broadway and a bestselling soundtrack album too, and was filmed later in 1961. It's a solo song by a Chinese American girl in its contemporary setting of the modern-day San Francisco Chinatown community of the late 50s. Here's a clip from the 1961 film version with the full version of the song. czcams.com/video/LtQBrShqgls/video.html
