This is the 1948 movie If You Knew Susie. What an astonishing entertainer Eddie Cantor was! He was before my time but I discovered him (thanks to CZcams) a couple of years ago and he just knocked me out. Brilliant!
Joan Davis multitalented girl.....sing, dance, acrobatics, and the best comedienne ever to light up the screen both in films and TV.. She was a good co-star with Eddie Cantor who was of great talent also.
Stephen Sondheim saw Eddie Cantor live onstage as a kid, and apparently he was a friend of his dad's; while Cantor was performing onstage he adlibbed "I'm going to the Sondheims' for dinner." Stephen said it was one of the most thrilling moments of his life.
Great to see Cantor with the wonderful Joan Davis. It's sad to think that Joan died so tragically and Eddie passed only a few years later. His high energy fit the Cantor name. Only heart troubles later in life prevented him from carrying on to the end in 1964.
So from the comments below, that familiar voice of the woman at the end was Joan Davis. By the time I saw her she had her own TV show "I Married Joan." Her TV husband was Jim Backus (Mr. MacGoo). Amazing how the 1930s actors and actresses were multitalented...sing, dance, and act. Thanks for posting.
Another of those Jewish-Irish couplings so popular in vaud-ee-ville (Burns and Allen, The Cohens and Kellys, Cohan and Harris, Abie's Irish Rose, Jolson and Keeler, Cantor and Davis).
When vaudeville was king...Durante, Cantor, Jolson, Cohan, Hope, "Bojangles", Benny, Sophie Tucker and on & on & on. Some of our greatest entertainers grew up on the Vaudeville stage.
Brilliant performer. My dad told me that after Cantor's death his home was sold, and I guess whoever got it wanted to tear the house down. It was so solid, they had to use dynamite. (Your random fact for the day, unless dear old Dad got it wrong. Dad grew up in Great Neck, NY, which is where I think Cantor lived. It's about 30-40 minutes from Manhattan by Long Island Railroad, so it would have been a logical choice.)
Cast members of this movie also included Margaret Kerry (Tinkerbell) and Bobby Driscoll (Peter Pan) before they were in Disney's animated Peter Pan together.
@0:51 That's Joan Davis! When I was a kid, I *loved* her in _I Married Joan._ Jim Backus, who played her husband, went on to play Thurston Howell III, on _Gilligan's Island,_ and was the voice of the cartoon character Mr. Magoo.
Do you not have any facial expressions when you're walking about?! The lyrics inform all his facial expressions, so he won't be consciously thinking about his face looks once he's rehearsed it a dozen times. He's miming along to a click track if that helps you process it - the audio will have been recorded separately...
Cantor and Davis had a 4 year affair that Cantor terminated after this film. It caused Davis to lose her husband and fall into depression. Cantor then began an on again/ off again relationship with Jacqueline Suzanne.
@WytZox1 YES! Another beloved star who left too soon, Joan Davis could be as funny as Lucille Ball when she had the right material. As for Eddie Cantor, I remember his movies & TV show when I was a boy and he was really one of the finest fathers, husbands & Americans ever. His Cagney-like bounce and "banjo eyes" made him a favorite of us kids, & what a sweet guy too! Cantor Quote: "Its nice to be important, but its more important to be nice." Words to live by! RIP Eddie we miss you.
I sing this song up to ten times a week and I think I usually use girl. So many versions. I think for the classically trained singer it's just easier to say the whole word, unless I am doing a classic New York accent, when I would us gal. This song is really more of a template that you can plug into.
@@giorgiorosa4402 Can only regret that I never followed my dream of being an entertainer, and my hat is off to you. I think my favorite recorded version of this song is the 1947 recording by Frankie Masters' Orchestra and vocal group, at about the time The Al Jolson Story film was released.
Eddie Cantor was one of the greatest talents there ever was, and he was just about the most adorable man who ever lived. He was Al Jolson's only real rival, but Jolson wasn't cute at all, let alone cute like Cantor.
He was 56 here, and I believe this was his last starring film. He would soon go into TV, where he would be a hit all over again on NBC-TV's Colgate Comedy Hour. There was nothing stopping Eddie, until health problems in the mid-50s had him cutting back his appearances. By the way, there was a hot rumor at the time that Eddie and Joan Davis were...ahem...an item during the making of this film. I'll leave that to the gossip columnists. Makin' Whoopi, indeed! :)
Too old looking here to perform this material. Why didn’t they surround him with 56 year old women? Entertainment is sooooooooooooo not like sports. Ya see in sports they would have put in a very young handsome guy to do the same thing. Depending on who they got they could stay with the Cantor vocal or replace it. We all would be better entertained if we weren’t so “star power” focused.
LOL! Yeah right! Being married and having children is the proof someone is straight. Aren't we a little naive? That being said, I absolutely have no proof that guy was gay. I just meant he acts more camp in this video than any gay guy I have known.
Hams drive showbiz. And true believers develop habits like we all do. What on earth is Angus Young going to do if he can’t re-visit all those arenas playin’ those rock classics he’s been playin’ for more n’ 40 years? They play at least ten songs every time and they always will. Can this be called “creative?” They are full blown performers with a finely tuned formula. They would have fit in perfectly with the old Hollywood system. Just like wrestling pictures.
Pussi Eater ~ So what if I was? How does that change your life? Those of you that worry about it the most seem to be trying to cover something up. Its okay man, no one will care if you come out of your closet. Give it a try.
There's an urban legend that Cantor requested his tombstone read "Here I lie in nature's nestle, free at last from Georgie Jessel."
Love it!
That's funny. The truth is Eddie and Georgie are both in crypts at Hillside Memorial Park in LA...only a 12 second walk from each other.
What's with the hands?????🤷🏿♂️🤷🏿♂️🤷🏿♂️
Eddie Cantor! Oh, what a guy! He was one of a kind and a fantastic entertainer. Thanks for sharing him here!
Hear, hear. If you haven’t already try to get to see The Kid From Spain. Hilarious

I grew up listening to Eddie Cantor.
Thanks! I was wondering about "1925" -- the first talkie was 1927 (Al Jolson in "The Jazz Singer").
I could watch Eddie Cantor all day.
Me too
I agree!

I love the thing Eddie did with his eyes.
Joan Davis multitalented girl.....sing, dance, acrobatics, and the best comedienne ever to light up the screen both in films and TV.. She was a good co-star with Eddie Cantor who was of great talent also.
and oh, what a chassis
Supposedly she had an affair with him during that time.
He must have been incomparable on the vaudville stage. And at the end of this clip, Cantor and Joan Davis. Two of the greatest.
I could watch Eddie Cantor, all day too! He was so dang funny and talented 🤓

Eddie Cantor...a true classic.
He's always surrounded by such beautiful girls, but he doesn't need them! He commands the screen himself.
Great to see Cantor with the wonderful Joan Davis. It's sad to think that Joan died so tragically and Eddie passed only a few years later. His high energy fit the Cantor name. Only heart troubles later in life prevented him from carrying on to the end in 1964.
There will never be another Eddie Cantor and I always remember this song!

One of his most famous songs. Thank you for posting.

Ah, back in the days when entertainment was fun, performed by real talent!
For 1948 viewers, Eddie was a thing of the past. But there's no doubt he still had it!
Boardwalk empire got me here.
Me as well
Well then you'll love Cantor! He has tunes just as catchy.
Ah, yes, I remember him well. What a fabulous, happy performer. They don't make 'em like that anymore.
Wow... I can remember that generation telling us our dresses were too short in the 60s and 70s...

Joan Davis was the singer with Cantor at the end of the song.

Thank you for this and the others.

with the FABULOUS Joan Davis!

Nice to see Joan Davis. A very funny and underrated gal. Died much too young.
Yes, she was amazing. What an astonishingly sad ending and short life she had.

The last version is with the forgotten star "Joan Davis"....In the 50's she had her own TV Show
Great Eddie
Me too ., I discovered him on AMC
The late great Eddie Cantor
I don't think film can capture the appeal that Cantor had live onstage.
I always think of the Ziegfeld movie when I hear this song
Eddie with the Buster Brown collar and Joan Davis with the Martha Raye mouth make the oddest couple 🤔

The greatest actor of all time. Way better than Gable, Spencer Tracy, Gary Cooper or any other actor. Eddie Cantor was an actor without equal.

Enjoyed the clips; thanks for posting. I'm just surprised because I'd always heard the lyrics sung as "Oh, oh, oh, what a gal" as opposed to "girl."

This is what Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra sing in Anchors Aweigh, referring to "Aunt Susie" (Kathryn Grayson)
