- Frost Giant Studios’ CEO and Production Director Tim Morten took the stage at the Game Developers Conference show floor in San Francisco to speak about Stormgate's work in Unreal Engine 5.
As part of this, Tim introduced a video narrated by Lead Campaign Designer Aaron Larson that reveals some of the tools players will have at their disposal for creating their own maps, mods, and custom games when the Editor is released. The video showcases the ease with which players will be able to create beautiful maps, set up custom events and triggers, and even create new unit abilities.
Please note that this was just a sneak peek at the tool that the Frost Giant team is using internally to build maps and campaign missions for Stormgate. The team still has a long road ahead before we consider our Editor to be fully functional and ready to put into modders’ hands.
Love it, thank you guys for showcasing this!
Tools like these are going to bring Stormgate to the next level!
They must have seen your video...
Perhaps the next great RTS will succeed? maybe? copium? please?
Thank you for not finishing the DoW playthrough. I was really excited for it, so this is great!
As long as your game looks like 2008 nobody will care...not to mention that also gives 50 FPS during big battles on a 4090 lol
@@PuellaMagiHomuraAkemiwell you watched the video, and I care so jokes on you I guess
As an occasional Starcraft 2 modder that works with others, please please please make all of this saved as plaintext and git friendly. A schema file for the data editor's files would also be appreciated, it can be tough to know what attributes are available within sc2 game data XML files.
Otherwise, this is looking really cool, I can't wait to play around with it.
not a modder but maybe yaml files would be friendly?
@@mohamedeffat54 Any Saveable and human readable (plaintext) would be fine.
@@mohamedeffat54 yaml files could work, but I've generally found them to be the least good of the basic text data storage formats. It's indentation-based, has multiple syntaxes for the same thing, and it's just way more complicated than it needs to be. I generally use json because it has builtin Python support, is still decently readable, is simple, and can support schemas with json-schema. sc2 uses XML for _most_ data, and it works well enough but critically sc2 doesn't supply a schema. I haven't used TOML much but I've generally been happy with what I've worked with; I don't know if it supports schemas.
@@mohamedeffat54Just use XML or JSON. No need to give modders/map makers grey hair by using something like Yaml.
@@phanerosYou can use JSON schemas with YAML too btw. I don't think JSON is ideal for anything that might involve hand-writing. There are alternatives like JSON5 and JSONC which make it a bit less annoying though. Unfortunately YAML is the most widely understood hand-writable format, despite all its flaws.
The editor looks amazing, the simplicity of the Warcraft 3 editor + the depth of the Starcraft 2 editor = Perfection. I'm looking forward to making the next "Dota" (where you at gabe).
Also, a powerful modding tool like this means that the game will not be hindered by poorly designed balance patches and oversights by the developers - not that I'm expecting much of that. It's nice to know that the players can always create the game that they want, and I'm so happy to see that Stormgate is tapping into what made gaming great back in the day. A sense of freedom, creative expression, and a community building experience.
To rant a bit (ignore this if you're sane), a lot of larger gaming companies have an NDA "keep our source code a secret" attitude which ends up being bad for the entire industry. These companies no longer want to inspire little timmy to make his own games, all they want is access to his mother's credit card. It's a sad state of affairs but I suppose "that's just business", which apparently means it's okay to be a complete pos. Regarding a game owned by a certain company that used to be the champions of creative freedom, Diablo 2 comes to mind. D2 has some of the most impressive mods that I've ever seen which are still being worked on today. Now compare it to Diablo 3 and Diablo 4 which have zero modding capabilities and are generally restrictive by design and you see the problem. For example, D3 and D4 removed Item Trading from the game because of fear of bots and 3rd party services selling the items online. Meanwhile, Diablo 2 is running perfectly fine even with a "trade anything you find" policy and has been doing so for 20+ years. There's 100 more examples of that where features are cut in half, restricted, and removed. It's constantly 1 step forward, 2 steps back with everything they do now. Anyway, I'm not saying that every game should have modding capabilities, I just want the selfish and greedy tendencies to stop. Gamers will repay you in kind and much more if you treat them and the industry with respect. Kudos to Frost Giant Studios for trying to get us back on track!
I'm seriously impressed. Tool looks very easy to use, yet has all the power one could need. So excited for the custom maps and game modes that the community will make with tools like this!
Editor was the whole reason why I never abandoned sc2. The amount of possibilities and games you could do with editor is endless. Thank you for implementing it in Stormgate too.
The editor is the #1 thing I've been looking forward too in stormgate!! If SC2 had a more user friendly editor and custom game experience I think it would have exploded. Maybe you can even let modders create ingame purchasable content and split revenue with your team!
a powerfull map editor??? this is exactly the thing that would make me buy the game at launch
super excited to see what the map making comunity is going to be able to do with this
Free to play
Can't wait to recreate all the Arcade games I made
Which one are you going to make first?
Dota 3 incoming.
Cant wait to play them 🎉
What about creating new ones the world haven’t seen.
Crap Patrol 3 incoming.
Oh my god, a raised terrain system that makes sense?!
COUNT ME IN!
Actual GODSEND!!! They really don't make games like these anymore. Keep it up!
Finally 🎉
I would buy this game for 350 bucks just for the editor alone
THIS, this is what i live for, I loved in-game editors since i first started playing Age of Mythology as a little kid. Get ready Stormgate...
As a mapmaker in SC2, it's quite interesting the similarities. Should make the transition smoother between sc2 and SG, at least for triggers. Data looks a bit different, waiting to see where you go from here. I would love to get my hand on it and start doing stuff :D
love it! wc3 editor was the best editor ever, but this looks even better! custom games
I can't comment on the SC 2 one, but yeah WC 3 World Editor was so easy to use that as a i can't recall correctly, maybe 11 years old me could make a map/mod with some triggers very quickly.
Can you please make it so when you type "forest" in a search field you get things that has forest in name. But if you type something like @forest or #forest - you get things on tag. That would be a lot easier to use.
Maybe make that as an option somewhere
This is a good idea!
Fantastic. I dont care so much for like regular 1v1 ranked games because I am usually pretty bad at competetive games, but this gives me hope for long term fun! Cant wait to see what fantastic maps and game modes the community will build.
Looks good so far, custom maps are always my favorite part of rts games.
Man, this is looking good. All the stuff I wanted from Warcraft 3's world editor, and more. I cannot wait to see where this goes.
Ooook. You guys are going all in on the RTS genre that we love. I'm on the hype train since the announcement. Thank you for what you are doing.
my perfect Starcraft 2 x DotA 2 RTS improvement would be something like:
proper shareable status effects (alt-click), configurable max select (up to unlimited like SC2) in gameplay constants, properly working quick cast, proper area of effect indicators, proper hold press to charge skill, proper vector targeting, proper recast mechanic, etc. I hope Stormgate will have those
edit: looks like autocast is a thing after watching the video
I learned LUA to make Generated map on Age of Empires IV, here it seems we just have to play with the editor, it looks great and I'm looking forward to this gem!
Loved that you are using 2D for that lash hook, man it gave me WC3 vibes and man it looks good. This very much from people who understand stuff happening and wanting them to look cool to them being able to be seen and very readable, other studios might just go full 3d model with particles and effects. Much love from WC3 fan!.
Uhhhhh I am HYPED for the custom maps people will make for this. It looks so much smoother than what we had 20 years ago.
And obviously, it's been 20 years. But still. I haven't seen one as detailed and powerful as I did back in WC3.
omg, as someone who was full of ideas for maps for sc2 but scared of it because of how difficult it was, im so looking forward to this
This so so awesome. Can't wait to see what the community will create.
I tried to get into making maps of SC2 but I found adding triggers to be a wall in my learning curve. Maybe I will try again :)
Having a random doodad for quick prototyping is such a welcome sight. many editors like war3 or sc2 don´t come with this functionality at all and others need workarounds, like splines in coh2 and coh3. I have made maps for every RTS game since red alert 1 and most of the editors are HORRIBRU. This looks very promising already. If you can save your map in a git-friendly way and publish it with ease, this is gonna be heaven.
This is super cool! Great tooling leads to better campaign content, creative custom games, and interesting multiplayer maps. Such a contrast from the dud announcement of "talk to AI"
This is what I've been waiting for! As a Blizzard Map Vault inhabitant I'd love to get my hands on this
One question: will there be support for imported models/assets per map?
Ohhh, this brings back so many fond memories of making custom maps back in the 90s and early 2000s. I can't wait to get my hands on it! When will we be able to start playing around with it?
Very good editor. As a mapmaker in StarCraft 2, I can say that it is very similar to it and that’s very cool
Editor is the feature that give anygame making it properly an endless replayibility. Can't w8 to make cool mods with this tool !
Why did the chicken cross the map? Because the triggers told it to
bro the memories of making maps in old rts as a child. I miss new games having an editor, this is such a nice addition!
In Starcraft 1 & 2 I never really cared for the regular "Melee" game online... but the Custom maps were what made the game for me adding so much replayability, like the Ekements and Madness series, tons of Tower Defence, etc in SC1 or Mafia, MOBAs, 3rd person shooters, etc in SC2.
I'm super excited for this! The editor in Brood War was a huge part of my childhood and the reason I fell in love with the genre to begin with, I can't wait to dig in to Stormgate's editor and see what worlds I can come up with :D
Keep these updates coming!
I've never been one to really edit maps on a serious level, it was more of how many footmen and grunts can I put against each other to create mass chaos in Warcraft II. Seeing all of these tools really blows my mind, again I haven't edited since WCII so everything will amaze me! I love the symmetry tool, I can see how that would lighten the workload a ton! Also props to the art department, this is really giving me Starcraft II meet Overwatch vibes and that's a good thing! I've always loved the cartoony bright vibrant colors the older games had! Also, the SCII console layout, love to see that! I'm looking forward to
It's videos like this that truly make me hopeful! I'm still nervous about the whole free to play genre, but I'm gonna let my guard down a bit and give this a chance. I do have a request, will you guys please wait to release Stormgate until it is finished? I think I speak for a lot of gamers out there, we are tired of getting half baked, "release it now and patch it later" games. I don't blame devs when it comes to those situations, I strictly blame upper management. I do believe the heart, passion, and talent surrounding this studio will lead everyone into greatness!
A delayed game will eventually be good, but a rushed game will forever be bad!
I'm truly excited to see what amazing things this team can pull off, I've trusted many of you guys in the past, I'm going continue to keep that trust! I've told just about everyone I know about this project, so we're anxiously watching, and very excited! We believe in you!
in other games i have noticed the symmetry feature being inconsistent and unreliable, where sometimes terrain modifications wouldnt go through on the other end of the map. has that been considered and solved for stormgate's custom games editor?
Awesome! Can't wait to play with it.
Loving what I am seeing here. Hoping to see more doodads types as different terrains arrive into the game, I would love to make a Custom Campaign in here!
Arguably the most important feature for the longevity of Stormgate.
Super looking forward to getting my hands on the editor as well, just have to hope there is a far fairer EULA compared to that of War3 after the changes. 🤞
I'm gonna spend so much time on it !
This looks incredible, simple yet full of depth and possibilities.
Custom Maps are why I’m still playing SCRM almost 30 years later. Can’t wait for Knight of The King on Stormgate.
Can you allow us to erase the terrain to make Space maps with planets and stars ?
Heroes of the Stormgate 🥹
I can already so whole secondary games being developed from the editor besides the actual game. Editors FTW!
fantastic showcase the map editor is looking very good
This guy casually created a way better map than the original one within 2-3 minutes :D
Damn the editor visuals look better than the game itself
I really care about triggers because the map I've worked on for 2 years in sc2 has thousands of lines of code and I've encountered many limits. I hope we have more trigger options in Stormgate, mostly with the UI. I also hope there is the possibility for bigger maps and more players. My game is a space war game in which we capture planets and build infrastructure. :D
And PLLLEEASE allow us to make money with our game. The custom map community works so hard.
Se ve genial, imagino veremos muchos escenarios creados por la comunidad que darán larga vida al juego.
Would be really neat if we could mirror textures but with separate pallets. I.E You draw textures for a grassland, and on the other side of the map, the grassland textures are infernal textures.
Battle for helms deep!
I made a Helm's Deep in BW and SC2, I may have to do one for Stormgate
It must be made. It's RTS tradition
2:27: Oh, and butterflies for the flowers - that'll be nice. 😆
This looks amazing!
hell fucking yes im mad excited!
Looks great so far
holy shit, this is amazing. I cant wait to see what the world ends up doing with this kind of map editor.
Dota and so many other game types came from community custom maps.. can't wait to see what this next generation comes up with.
Can't wait!
This is awesome! Keep up the great work!
It is important that the interface and interaction be simple and intuitive, and look modern, then anyone can create maps
now this is EPIC
Incredible!
Looks great guys, keep it up!!
That’s sick!
Looks great!
So excited for this!
awesome work, keep it up!
Last time i used map editor was on broodwar, to make 3 mele maps for my friend to play. Im gonna do it again
Thank fucking god they brought back tree painting. That was one of my most missed features going from WC3 to SC2 in the editors
heck yea looks. amazing
Awesome!
Can't wait to make a MOBA with this -- Heroes of Stormgate.
This looks super awesome. And now I wait until someone remakes Warcraft 3 out of it
That looks really good
This is gonna be epic
Great Tool! Cant wait to play some workshop games
Looks very promising!
Looks dope
LET'S GOOOO
Love it! Can't wait to make crappiest tower defense game with this tool.
Lancer Frenzy boutta go hard
Amazing!
That great! if you make it as easy to use as W3 World Editor, I'm sure people will be popping off with awesome custom map in no time
This is looking great
love it
keep it goin, i cant wait to play
How do you test the map?
Is it like in WC3 where you need to 1) log in 2) load the entire map before testing small triggers?
Finally! I'm late by 3 weeks cause by lot of event/showmatch in the past few week in wc3. The tool look very similar to world editor from wc3 ngl. But with much better way to do the scripts. I wonder when do we have the first melee mapping contest?
I am cautiously optimistic...
The features all look great, love the terraining and data tools, it's nice to see the import menu still there.
Paintbrushes are a bit odd to be so excited about but yours are definitely some of the smoothest I've seen
But I really have serious serious concerns on the trigger side of things.
It took out several frames to spawn loot from a chicken.....
I am going to hope that was a video editing jump cut or you will be in deep trouble making a campaign with such clunky tools.
If that really happened in game, you will need to fix that, I cannot stress how many leagues behind your triggers are if they cause lag like that.
ALSO, where are the dependencies! And the mod files! Is this just maps now?
I could not make any of the custom campaigns I've made without SC2's robust dependency system.
Again, I love what you're showing here and I'm glad to hear this isn't the finished product.
I just cannot say that I have no doubts in my mind.
I'm looking forward to seeing more, and I hope you can assuage my fears
I'm more impressed by the showcase than the editor. I feel like if these kind of things can be converted into official, comprehensive tutorials, so many new faces will appear in the modding scene.
YES!
Please add the ability to make invisible and burrowed units and detectors
The time to forge draws near.
Neat addition.
This is great content! Much better than the AI stuff XD
pretty nice stuff, keep it up!
Does the game support 21:9?
