Here’s 40 secrets, Easter eggs, and references we noticed and think you should too. By the way… there’s a few boss encounter spoilers here so come back later if you don’t want to know them just yet.

+Jules Foca Gosset 🤗
Jules Foca Gosset so I did I lol
No video I've seen references the battle with Metal Sonic and how he is inside the machine giving power to the tiny Silver Sonics. The machine he is in is from Knuckles Chaotix final boss with Metal Sonic. I don't blame many ppl from not knowing this game well. Oh and Heavy also came from Knuckles Chaotix as well as a playable character, but they dont look like the Heavies in this game.

3:41 Seeing the sign, immediately followed by Knuckles drifting on screen cracked me up.
Knuckles slowly flies immediately on top of Sonic. Just like lock-on!

Sonic and knuckles ahh moment
The shurikans the Heavy Ninja throws are the star shaped enemies from Metropolis Zone in Sonic 2 on the Genesis.
They're called asterons.
Kaden Gotcher Shinobi*
Yah your right
I still hate those things
Not just that but some of the sound effects during that boss fight are from The Revenge of Shinobi for the Genesis
2:41
If you look closely there's a green bird flying somewhere in the special stage. That could be a callback to the Special Stages in Sonic 1, where you can see multiple birds morphing into fish in the background
You are right! It's the same bird
.good catch

"By the way, there are a few boss encounter spoilers..."
* spoils a boss on screen *
zakthepower lol
Well, he wasn't lying.
Well, he wasn't lying.
Well, he wasn't lying.
Well, he wasn't lying.
The Knuckles Mirage Saloon boss itself IS a callback to the caterkiller boss in Sonic Chaos.
Cherif The Dragonfly & knuckles
So nobody's going to point out that Metal Sonic sits in an outlet resembling the one from Knuckles' Chaotix??? Literally NOBODY has pointed that out. I actually thought you would have to fight Titan Metal Sonic again. 😑
Kuroda Kazuma I mentioned it!
That's what I thought too. And with the update out, now you do!
Wow. You predicted Metal Sonic Kai being in Mania. Amazing.
is a sonic mania easter eggs not a sonic mania plus
No-one mentions that the Super Sonic backwards tilting sprite is exactly the same as Espio's backwards tilting sprite in Knuckles' Chaotix.
An Easter egg I really loved was the “No Way? No Way!” Achievement in sonic mania. You get this achievement by doing the “get blue spheres” challenge. If you had the original &Knuckles cartridge and locked on anything besides sonic 2 or 3, you would get a screen with sonic saying “No Way? No Way!” Which, after pressing start, you could play any of the “get blue sphere” challenges.
Switch user here.. you don't need a code for debug mode, you unlock it through blue sphere just like everything else
theres a code on the title screen. that unlocks level select and the debug mode
Yeah but that works for all versions and you don't need it to unlock them on Switch.
This video stated that you needed the code on the Switch version of the game, but all versions of the game are the same.
+SuperLink Josh the code works on PS4? Wow! I tried it but couldn't get it to work. I checked online and it said switch only.
I hope you're right.
Yeah it should do.
this article has the way to access level select from the No Save slot on PS4
www.eurogamer.net/articles/2017-08-25-sonic-mania-unlockables-cheats-debug-super-peel-out-extra-modes-4843 but there's most likely a way to do it on the title screen too since the Switch version has both
I would recommend maybe trying combinations of triangle or square with other buttons
Hmm, reading around it does seem like the the title screen code doesn't seem to work on ps4. Can't imagine why.
Either way, it's just the same level select menu as the one you can access via the No Save slot once you unlock Debug mode.
The exclusive knuckles boss fight against Heavy King in Lava Reef has 3 references:
The thought bubble that appears when knuckles remembers previous events(haha, PTSD) is a reference to the Sonic Mega Drive comics.
2. The fight itself is a direct reference to the fight against Super Mecha Sonic in Sonic & Knuckles.
3. The Super Emeralds appears to be grey and empty, which indicates that they lost their power. This basically confirms that the Super Emeralds cannot be used anymore, which makes Aaron Weeber's statement in last month's Comic-Con a lot more sense.
+MrGRmask wow! This is impressive. Thanks MrG!
I WILL ALWAYS BELIEVE IN HYPER
One could also stretch a bit and say the attack where he shoots the beam along the ground causing explosions, could be a reference to the Moon Zone boss in Sonic Advance. Its laser attack was very similar.
The Super Emeralds ARE the chaos emeralds, so if they were grey and empty, how would sonic still obtain the chaos emeralds? Those "Super Emeralds" look more like stone statues rather than the super emeralds.
@@xemblazonx because the master emerald powers the chaos emeralds
The sun icon in the newscast during the Eggman Studiopolis Act 2 boss fight is from the Mega Drive manual's warnings
The ninja stars that Heavy Ninja throws are a badnik from Metropolis Zone in Sonic 2 (and they are as annoying as in the fight)
Cheesepuff44 fun fact: he's not called heavy ninja. It's Heavy Shinobi.
Cheesepuff44 What ninja? Do you mean Heavy Shinobi?
Asteron was their name. They explode into about 5 pieces after a while. VERY VERY VERY annoying.
@@paxgallery6646 yet another reference to the game its based off of
That was deeper and more interesting than I would have imagined. Thanks for sharing!
you glossed over it, but the machine Metal Sonic goes into during his Boss fight is identical to the one that copies Sonic's Data in the OVA
I just noticed that not 5 minutes ago!
It is also a reference to his boss fight in Knuckle's Chaotix.
Or from knuckles choatix
Lol
This is definitely the most comprehensive video like this that I've seen, great work
Fun Fact: The Studiopolis name was a complete coincidence, to the point where the team came up with other names for the zone out of fear that the place wouldn't allow the use of their name.
Studiopolis said it was fine so they keep as a fun reference.
When playing I found it pretty cool how Metal Sonic's jump sound effect was the jump sound used in Sonic CD. Also his boss fight is a reference to Sonic Generations, Knuckles' Chaotix and of course Sonic CD.
On the spinning signs that drop down, Tails sign is a callback to sonic 2 Game gear title, when tails's sign winks, it's the same animation of the wink on the sonic 2 Game gear title screen.
This is surprisingly well researched
Subbed :D
I think I read online somewhere, when Studiopolis Zone was named, the designers/namers had NO IDEA of the real life Studiopolis. The name ended up staying in, though.
...and knuckles
CrazyE
whoa
*Yeah there's probably more references*
Outstanding
6:05 OMG thank you so much for telling me what that was!!!! I thought something was wrong with my XBox when I heard that sound! It creeped me out, but now I don't have to worry! HUGE SIGH OF RELIEF
Good video! thanks for making
10:57 As soon as I heard those sounds, I immediately thought of Shinobi
Same
the "gallop" bingo is also missed from these easter eggs list, also from daytona...
Great work bromigo I hit the like button and subbed
The animation of Metal Sonic pluging himself into the silver sonic making machine is from knuckles chaotix´s final boss
5:00 when you say very hypely and sonic says "i guess so" lol

sonic mania | 40 Easter eggs, Secrets and References & Knuckles of Lyric
i commented he same thing and didnt even notice this comment lol
Knuckles & Knuckles &Knuckles
&knuckles.
05:54 This needs explaining. Christian Whitehead was not aware of Studiopolis being an actual thing when the name was being brought up, but after learning that Studiopolis was an actual thing, the team pitched alternate titles to Sega in the event of offence. Sega thought it was a neat idea so we have the zone title as named.
This is a great video!
This is nice
+VlueTooth TFG 😎
PlayStationGrenade Keep it up bro
I’ve watched most easter egg videos, and none of them have mentioned the easter egg in the boss of Press Garden act 2. The hard boiled heavy throws the exploding stars from Metropolis Zone in Sonic 2.
I think you're right about the 3D spherical worm thing, but it also looks like a boss from Space Harrier a Sega Arcade game, mixed with the sonic Marble Garden bot
nice vid & knuckles
AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And knuckles
It would be interesting to see "& Sonic mode" just see Sonic act as the sidekick for a change.
You Are GENIUS
Wow, this just made me realized there was more Easter eggs
Actually the ninja is the Heavy Shinobi
Sonic Fanboy 2003 wx
Great
Well done
Ooooohhh... That Chemical Plant Zone droplet reference was bugging me for ages. I knew it looked so familiar and you solved it for me. xD
That catakiller boss fight is re imagined in Mirage Saloon in Knuckles' Story in Mania
*Eggman is actually mario in disguise*
1: Wateropolis
2: grab wierd hook
3: 👈👈👉👉👆👆
4: eat some spaghetti n meatballs
5: spin machine

Good videa :D

The ninja stars used by the ninja boss first appeared in sonic 2 as stage hazards
GOODBYE MIIVERSE
Splat Tim rest in pasta miiverse.
Great!! I liked the litlle Sonic... He is funny. Anyway, God bless you, man!!
Thnaks for easter eggs ☺
He's good, isn't he, andrei youtube boss? You remember the Easter Eggs of Sonic Mania! What if Sonic Mania were the one whose sequel could be a Sonic-Ristar crossover game called "Sonic Mania 2: Sonic and Ristar"?
11:15 pokeball
pokemon catcher SO TRUE😂😂😃 GOOD ONE
4:23 GAY BOOOOOOOONER :D
Lenoh why...im dead now
Lenoh XD
xD I CAN'T UNHEAR THAT NOW XD
Lenoh damn now I can't get That out my head. Lol
Don't do that
i love that you call him robotnik!
One of the first games I owned was Sonic Advance for the GameBoy and I was just really happy when I heard the same sound effect we see on the Casino Level on Studiopolis, when you are at those "lottery machines"
That sound effect was also in the Sonic Advance incarnation of Angel Island
There are 2 more in studiopolis zone act 2. On eggmans signs the colored dots are suppose to be the chaos emeralds and when you go down the spinny tube things the sound it makes is the same in Sonic Advance from the carnival stage.
Krbs 614955 also after studioopolis act 2 boss you can hear the buzz sound referencing the 25th anniversary stream where the audio will buzz out
And there is another neon sign the reads, Good, Great AWESOME OUSTSTANDING, AMAZING!, referencing Sonic Colors
Those were already in the video.
That spinning Machine sound from Casino Paradise in Sonic Advance! It made me love Sonic Mania even more for referencing a lot of stuff
Also during the Act 2 boss if you look closely at the words "LIVE" it will appear to be spinning making it look like the word "EVIL".
The giga caterkiller fight is actually identical to the fight from sonic chaos if you're playing as knuckles
I didn't see that..
&knuckles?
Lazypackmule & knuckles
i kinda liked those trippy bonus stages from the first sonic game
I can just imagine a ad where in the end Sonic says:
"It doesn't take AGES to finish it! It takes SEGA kid!"
*shows clip of a boss fight* btw boss spoilers
Never play as tails doll in sonic r it's a curse thats why
Oh no.
*chuckle*
rwdplz1 *muscles*
*& Knuckles*
The Gallop Lotto lottery machines are a reference to Gallop, one of the sponsors of Hornet High-Class in Daytona USA.
the "beefed up catterkiller" is different for knuckles in the way that you fight him because its the same battle from sonic chaos
You forgot the VideoGameDunkey reference in Hydrocity Zone.
Coltin Lindsley I hear that's been patched out of all versions except the Switch.
MrEasyNah I think it was patched in plus
MrEasyNah I think it was patched in plus
Thanks
11:27 speaking as that, the knuckles version has a fight like that but with the other worm boss.
I thought it was fang the sniper
+Denver Ellis it is indeed but nack the weasel is his real name. 👍
PlayStationGrenade no, fang the sniper is his name worldwide, Nack the weasel is just his American name
KNACK!!! HERE COMES THE MONEY!!!!!!
incorrect. His real name is Fang the Sniper. His name was changed when Sonic Triple Trouble was localized in North America (Which originally was Sonic and Tails 2). In the original japanese manual Fang is a half wolf, half weasel hybrid, where as in the american manual he is just a weasel, no mention of being a half wolf/half weasel.
What about the title screen press star it was taking out of sonic 1
Everyone knows that reference dude...
Super_ xz I know that but its still good to mention it.
Not everyone knows that there was an unused "PRESS START" in Sonic that wasn't used for unknown reasons (It was probably an accident).
It was bug
Oh no, totally do one about the hardcore references
I actually JUST noticed the sonic face at the title before you mentioned it
&knuckles
2nd :3 love yor channel
Thanks, Laloxin.
PlayStationGrenade can i add you on ps4 ?
+Ialoxin Live yeah, go for it. Please write in the message who you are so I don't miss the add. 😎
PlayStationGrenade what you acc ?
PlayStationGrenade i sent a request my acc is ialoxn
How do you unlock mean bean machine?
unlock medals in blue sphere
GET DEM BLUE CIRCLES
The sign saying, "Good, Great, Awesome, Outstanding, Amazing!" Is a callback from Sonic Colors, whenever you go through a rainbow ring.
Green hill act 1 miniboss - Sonic 1 Green hill boss
Green hill act 2 boss - Death Egg Robot (Sonic 2)
Chemical plant act 1 miniboss - Ice cap act 1 miniboss
Hydrocity act 1 miniboss - you using Hydrocity act 2 boss machine (3&k)
Hydrocity act 2 boss final phrase - Hydrocity act 1 miniboss (3&K)
Knuckles' Lava reef act 2 boss - Knuckles' True Boss v.s. Mecha Sonic which the Heavy King absorbs energy from master emerald. Another thing is, the Heavy King tries to steal the Master Emerald like Eggman did (3&K). It gave Knuckles a Deja Vu (I've been in this place before!) of what Eggman did back then
Metalic Madness act 1 miniboss - Sonic 1 Final Boss
Heavy ninja is not his name its heavy shinobi
What about SUPER SONIC BLUE?
& Knuckles
& Knuckles featuring Knuckles
Galladite 614 thats a glitch......................and knuckles
Lol
The countdown font for the multiplayer is also taken from Daytona USA as well as the announcer.
I knew that feedback in Studiopolis had to be from the livestream 😂
Third! That's not exciting!
Also, hi
hello, william william
bill bill Qlss
... & Knuckles.
Yo & knuckles & SANIKZ.EXE
We need another video of this with Sonic Mania Plus
0:40 - that's funny, I just noticed this 2 SECONDS AGO SOMEHOW lol
The ninja stars heavy shining uses in the press garden boss battle are badniks called “asterons” from metropolis zone from sonic 2
The song played in Mirage Saloon Act 1 has a part (towards the ending of the song) that is a reference from Sonic 2's Sky Chase Zone music..
The greatest fan service ever.
WOW! I'm surprised you didn't mention how it's like Space Harrier at the end also, just to double the reference there. Also some of earlier info about unlocking Puyo Puyo is wrong as you also have to unlock it from Blue Spheres, but I"m sure you already know that.
I love the old SEGA Pirate TV adverts, especially the advert they did for Sonic 2, where they used a puppet hedgehog that was ran over by an intimidating-looking truck. The next scene would have tolling bells in the background with the image of the dead hedgehog on a road slab with flattening tyre marks. Steve O'Donnell (who was the main star of the ad series) would come into shot and say "...obviously not as fast as SONIC THE HEDGEHOG!" It would transition into fast-paced gameplay footage of Sonic 2, subtitled with a fake helpline number to Mrs. Tiggywinkle's Hospital For Hedgehogs. It ends with Steve O'Donnell say "well... he won't be making a comeback... boohoohoo!" And then the slogan "To be this good takes AGES", with an animation of Sonic giving the Vs to the viewer.
I knew the sonic spin ball reference as soon as I saw it and Dr robot nicks mean bean machine.
One of the Sonic 3 final bosses can be seen in the background of Knuckles' path through Lava Reef 2. It's kinda hard to notice at first, since it just kinda looks like a reactor, but you can find it underground.
I love this video
and knuckles
I love mean bean machine
The giant caterpillar from Mirage Saloon is also a reference to the sand caterpillars from Sandopolis in Sonic & Knuckles
8:34 Mecha Sonic? From the Master System version? Oh yeah! My childhood is saved, now!
If you watched the opening animation, then you would notice that the background represents the box art for the sonic 1 and 2 in japan for the genesis And during the Chaos Emerald special stages then you can see some of the fish and birds from the sonic 1 special stages.
10:53 that star is an enemy in Metropolis zone, from Sonic 2
Woah! That was 40?! Huh.
some sonic mania reference i found my self: chemical plant after green hill thats from generations
1up music from sonic 4 ep 1 and 2
the caterpillar also came from sonic 4 ep 2
The coins you receive from the Blue Sphere stages are based on the bronze coins in Sonic R's courses which collecting all of them unlocked more characters.
Extra reference: The final section of Mirage Saloon Act 1 music (the version with Sonic and Tails, not Knuckles) is actually Sky Chase Zone music from Sonic 2
The Metal Sonic fight is also a reference to the penultimate boss of Knuckles Chaotix.
